The sharp pain hit her and she clutched at the dresser, eyes widening in alarm - not yet - too soon. She saw the fear on Jack's face. The pain came again, and she sank to the floor, clutching her stomach. He was by her side, lifting her, murmuring words of comfort and love.
*
Jack blinked tears from his eyes as he looked at his second son. He was so small, his movements so feeble. He had to live, had to live. And Joey, sleeping now, whiter, weaker than Jack had ever seen her , Jo must never, never, go through this again.

But does Jack mean childbirth altogther, or childbirth without medical intervention? Because Joey has the triplets at home, and Stephen and Charles (I think), but the rest all seem to be born in hospital.
