Time for SuperHilda to come to the rescue? Will she exchange herself for her staff? Will the Deputy Head's dilemma be about what to do with Hilda holed up with the prisoners? Many possibilities!

Thanks Lesley... I've been waiting a long time for that post! Laughing

Ruth thought back to the events of the past hour, although she had felt uneasy that evening, felt that the women were not really concentrating, the speed with which everything had happened had astounded her.

“Miss Derwent, I’m cutting short the lesson, please ask your Staff to pack up immediately. The mood in here tonight is wrong, there’s going to be trouble.” The Senior Prison Officer’s voice was controlled, but still held some urgency. Ruth nodded quickly, she turned to speak to Kathie, the closest, as she did she noticed that a number of the inmates had risen, were walking toward her,

“Going somewhere, Miss Derwent?” The tone of the question was faintly mocking, as though the woman already knew the likely outcome, Ruth looked across, it was a tall woman, perhaps in her early thirties, no more, with light brown hair and eyes. She was fit and strong, boasted of being a martial arts expert. Her name was Sullivan, a fairly new inmate, she’d only been to two previous sessions. Ruth had felt, privately, that she didn’t need to be there anyway, sure that she could already read and write. She had refused to allow the RCS mistresses to address her by her first name, insisting that her only name was Sullivan. Although Ruth had not deliberately tried to discover her crime, rumours had whispered that she was a killer.

“Tonight’s session must end early,” Ruth said, trying to project authority, “we’ll be back next week but we have to go now.”

Sullivan laughed, “Oh, I don’t think so,” she said, “I don’t think we want you to go just yet,” as she spoke she also gestured to a number of those closest to her, within seconds each of the RCS Mistresses found themselves held by two or three determined inmates.

“What are you doing? What is this?” Although trying to stay calm and in control, Ruth was aware of the tremor in her voice, she hoped it was not noticeable to anyone else.

As she spoke there was a commotion across the other side of the large classroom, she looked over to see the other two prison officers being dragged in, they’d both been assaulted. They were both forced to their knees, held there, by women who were obviously taking their orders from Sullivan. Out of the corner of her eye, Ruth also saw that the Senior Officer, Miss Shaw, was being held by a number of inmates, and that they were taking the opportunity to attack her.

Sullivan smiled, “There’s been a slight change in plan, schoolteacher,” she said quickly, “you see, some of us felt that, rather than have you teach tonight, we could use you in some other way, namely to get us out of this s**t hole. And this place, the Education wing, is really easy to cut off from the rest of the prison…”

She was suddenly interrupted by another voice, “What the Hell do you think you’re doing, Sullivan?”

At the voice Sullivan looked worried, though she covered it quickly, she turned to speak to another woman who had just entered the room, near to where Miss Shaw was held. “Butcher!” she said quickly, “I didn’t know you’d be here.”

“Obviously,” Butcher’s voice was full of contempt, “this your attempt at power, Sullivan? Because it’s not going to work.”

Sullivan looked angry, but swallowed the anger enough to reply, “This place can be defended, we can use these people to get out, to escape. Or perhaps you don’t want that, perhaps you like being friends with the screws?”

Butcher’s face stilled, when she replied it was with real menace in her voice, “You ever repeat that again, Sullivan, I’ll kill you,” she said, and at the threat Sullivan paled considerably, “don’t you know how often these things end badly?”

At that point there was a disturbance among those holding Miss Shaw and the Prison Officer broke free, moving quickly she ran toward the nearby door and the large emergency alarm, placed beside it. She almost made it. Butcher herself ran in, under the woman’s guard, slowing her with kick to her knee, then Butcher had thrust an elbow into her solar plexus. Miss Shaw sank to her knees, gasping for breath. Before she could recover the other inmates were upon her. Tearing out a nearby phone, they used the wire to bind her hands behind her.

She looked up at Butcher, “Don’t do this, Butcher,” she said faintly, “if you join in with this, a lot of people will be hurt.”

Butcher gazed at her without emotion, “I’ve already joined,” she said flatly. She turned to one of those holding the woman, “Lock her up, alone, in one of the cells. Make sure there are guards on the door.” She looked across at the women holding the other two officers, “Put those two in a cell together, guard them well. Any objections, Sullivan?” Her gaze swept back to the other inmate.

Sullivan shook her head, “Of course not, Butcher, you’re in charge here.”

Butcher nodded, “Yeah, and don’t you forget it. Now see that the teachers are all placed in a cell, make sure they are not touched. Then we’ll see about securing this place before the rest of the prison catches on to what’s happening.”

At her words Ruth and the others were hustled out of the room and along to where a row of cells lined a corridor. Just before being ushered into one of them, Ruth saw Miss Shaw being dragged into one cell, while the other two officers were pushed into another. Then the door was slammed and she could only see the confines of her own cell.

Just caught up with the last two episodes, Lesley.

Are we to assume that Butcher is playing a double bluff here - or is that all far too simple? Shocked Shocked Knowing your cliffs, probably!

Am guessing that we're not going to get out of this one too quickly. Can I (sorry! May I....) join you under that desk, folks?

I'm thinking Buthcher's right with the ending badly stuff but I msotly trust her not to let the RCS staff get hurt. Kathie really needs to learn to calm down and not lose her temper so easily I think 'cause I don't think shouting or getting angry is going to be even slightly helpful.

Thanks Lesley

I'm thinking that Pim's desk must be very large! Twisted Evil

The RCS Staff Room was full; it was after eight pm, the Kindergarten and Juniors were already in bed, the Housemistresses or Deputies already in the Boarding Houses with them. The Middles and Seniors were enjoying free time, those that wanted were watching TV, playing computer games or sitting and chatting. This evening, being a Wednesday, saw some of the girls attending music lessons or one of a number of different societies or clubs available. However most of the Staff were just relaxing themselves, also in the Staff Room were the Head and Deputy Head. Miss Annersley sitting with a group of the younger mistresses, all intent on discussing the Harry Potter series, and talking about the new one due out in July. Miss Wilson was sitting with Nancy Wilmot and Rosalind Moore, laughing as they all looked through some of the photographs of Rosalind’s wedding.

Into this scene of domestic bliss strode a bringer of bad news; the Staff Room door opened and John Coates walked in, seeing the Librarian Pat he smiled, “Is the Head here?” Pat pointed him in the right direction.

A tap on her shoulder and Hilda Annersley looked up into John Coates’ face, “Did you want me, John?”

“Something you need to see, Hilda,” John said quietly, “come over here,” he led her over to the annex, inside a few people were watching a film on the TV. “Excuse me everyone,” John said quickly, he reached across and switched the TV over to a news channel, as he did Nell, Nancy and Rosalind wandered in, curious. They all looked at the TV, a male presenter was just finishing the broadcast.

“And our breaking news, once more, there are reports being received about a riot occurring in the female State Prison this evening. The riot, involving up to fifty inmates, seems to be confined to one block - the Education block. The women were there having their weekly literacy lessons. Details about their armaments and demands have not yet been made clear. There is no information yet about the health or well-being of either the four teachers or the three prison officers all known to be in the block just before the riot started. Stay tuned for any further information as we have it. Now a word from our spon…”

John switched off the TV, “I’m right aren’t I?” he asked Miss Annersley, “Our people are up there tonight?”

The Head nodded abruptly, “You are correct, John, I did need to see that,” she said quickly, “thank you for bringing this to my attention.” She glanced round at those Staff within the room, “Stay calm everyone,” she said, and her voice seemed to generate the same, “I’ll find out what is happening and let you know immediately.” She left the Staff Room, headed back to her Study.

Not much you don't do cliffs, Lesley!!! - But I laughed my head off at the second tailpiece you've just added to your footline (or whatever those comments at the end which I can't get to include when I hit 'quote' are called) Thanks for that touch of humour!

#835:  Author: LesleyLocation: Allhallows, Kent PostPosted: Sat May 14, 2005 11:43 pm

Pim what does 'sprunyness' mean?

Inside the cell the woman rose from where she had sat on the bed, recovering from the blow to her stomach. She stretched slightly, feeling the strain on her shoulders, the insistent pull caused by her wrists being tied behind her. As quickly as possible she took an inventory of her belongings. Her keys, of course, were gone, Butcher herself had removed the keys and their chain from her belt. Also gone the other marks of her profession, small truncheon, pepper spray, ID card. They’d left her wallet, at least for now, but just about everything else was gone. Miss Shaw began to pace, thinking, this wasn’t the first time she had faced trouble during her career, she’d been in the Service more than twenty years, it was expected. But this was probably the most dangerous situation. As she walked she suddenly winced as the bruising from Butcher’s blow caught up with her, ‘Damn but that was painful,’ she thought, ‘never realised an elbow could be so hard.’

After a time she forced herself to sit down again, it was likely she was going to need all her strength to survive this. She didn’t know how long she sat there for, she may even have dozed off, but was suddenly alerted by the sound of a key in the lock, she jerked awake and watched the door open.

“Hello screw,” the voice was mocking, nasty.

Miss Shaw looked across to see Sullivan framed in the doorway. She said nothing.

“What, nothing to say, Shaw? That’s a first for you, normally you’ve always got loads to tell us, isn’t that right girls?” She turned her head slightly, Miss Shaw could see at least half a dozen other women, all crowding round to catch a glimpse of their prisoner.

Sullivan walked into the cell and stood directly in front of the prison officer,

“She don’t look so special now, does she, Sullivan?” One of the other women called across quickly.

“She’s not special,” Sullivan replied, “the only thing that made her special was these,” she lifted her hand to show a set of keys and a chain, “now I’ve got them, she’s nothing. Ain’t that so, screw?”

Miss Shaw remained silent, staring directly at the inmate in front of her, the silent stare seemed to enrage Sullivan, reaching across she grabbed the woman by her lapels and hauled her to her feet. “Stand up when I’m talking to you!” she ordered. Her hand felt the wallet in Miss Shaw’s top pocket, releasing her victim she took the wallet out, inside, as well as some money, were a few photographs.

The other women crowded into the cell and arranged themselves around Sullivan, she looked round and smiled, “Here you go, girls, photos for you to enjoy!” She passed round the pictures, catching sight of the angry gleam in the prison officer’s eyes, “What, did that upset you, Shaw? Have I made some mistake, allowing the women to look at these pictures?” She plucked one back from the women, showed it to Shaw, “Who’s this then? A relative or a friend?”

Miss Shaw bit her lip, remaining silent.

“Oh well, if it’s not important…” Sullivan grinned while tearing the picture in half, “You’ll not mind will you?”

“I should have expected that from you, Sullivan,” Miss Shaw said tightly, “no appreciation of anything belonging to another, no thought of anyone except yourself. No wonder you ended up in here for a minimum of twenty years, just what I’d expect.”

Sullivan reached across and pulled the prison officer to her feet again, “I’ve got news for you, screw,” she said softly, “I’ll be leaving here soon, you’ll die in here.” She looked round at the other women and smiled, “think we should all give Shaw a proper welcome girls, show her the true state of affairs in here now. One she’s going to have to accept.”

She raised her hand and viciously slapped the woman across her face. Her action appeared to galvanise the others. They all moved forward eager to take part in the beating…

It was only a short time later that Miss Annersley appeared once more at the Staff Room, the information she had was sketchy in the extreme. John Coates had managed, through his connections, to get through to someone fairly senior in the relevant police force, but all they could do was confirm the details mentioned on the TV broadcast.

“At the moment, although no one can say definitely,” the Head continued, “it would appear that our four Staff are being held as hostages, along with the three prison officers. They have a police negotiation team there, waiting to speak to the convicts, but so far they have not answered any calls. I’ll let you know as soon as I hear anything. Nancy, Rosalind, Sharlie, all of you please join me in my Study, any news will come directly through to there.”

She walked back to her Study, followed by the three named. As she reached the Admin block Nell joined her,

“Ben Pieper is on his way over,” she said.

The Head looked puzzled.

“Jackie’s partner,” Nell explained, “He’s just seen the broadcast on TV, phoned here to find out. When I told him we’d been in contact he said he’d come here.”

Hilda nodded, “Oh yes, he’s an Information Analyst? Daisy has him working for the Real Hospital?”

“Yes, he said he’d come here first, see if there was anything he could do, before heading to the prison itself.”

“I doubt they’ll let him close.”

“I don’t think he’s the type to take no for an answer.”

Butcher had spent the time since the initial revolt consolidating the position of the women. Arranging for all external door to be locked and barricaded, before setting guards on them. Getting women to stockpile water prior to the authorities switching off the supply. Ensuring that substances could be used to provide lighting in case the power was also curtailed. She and her lieutenants were so busy that it was some time before she noticed the absence of one particular woman. Walking through the largest classroom, where most women not otherwise engaged were gathered, she stopped suddenly,

“Where’s Sullivan?”

One of her people looked across, “Haven’t seen her since she collected the keys from me,” she began.

Butcher’s eyes widened, “She did what?”

The other woman looked scared, “She said you wanted all the sets of keys, had asked her to collect them…” she stopped as Butcher turned and, with a run, moved to the cell block, her people right behind.

Reaching the corridor Butcher immediately checked the doors, the prisoners had been placed in cells far apart, to confound any attempt at rescue, she saw the ones holding the teachers and the two prison officers were both shut, a guard outside, but the third door was open. She moved toward it. The scene inside revealed itself, six or seven women, Sullivan among them, all grouped around an object on the floor, all kicking. The object on the floor…Butcher suddenly realised it was Shaw.

“That’s enough!” Her voice was loud, it demanded obedience. The women all looked round as Butcher and her people all entered the cell, grabbing hold of the women and literally throwing them away from the object of their assault. Such was the force of their attack, that most of the women were flung from the cell and, somewhat frightened by the reaction from Butcher, chose to slink away.

One women though attempted to retaliate, as Butcher came toward her Sullivan swung a sharp punch to her head. Ducking beneath it Butcher rammed her shoulder into Sullivan, propelling her backwards to slam into the wall. Before she could recover Butcher retrieved an object from her pocket and held it to Sullivan’s throat. It was a home-made knife, sharp and deadly.

“Give me a reason to use this, Sullivan,” Butcher hissed.

Sullivan remained still, she swallowed slightly, “Didn’t know it was you, Butcher,” she said quickly, “Thought someone was coming to rescue the screw.”

“Someone was,” Butcher snarled back, “you don’t attack the prisoners without my say so, do you understand?”

“Yes Butcher, of course.”

“Right, now get out of here, go back to the classroom. Next time I find you going against me will be your last.”

Butcher pulled back slightly and watched the other woman leave the cell.

Butcher ordered the rest of the women to leave the room, calling over one of her lieutenants she spoke, “Keep all the women away from the screws, there’s to be no more attacks. And keep a close eye on Sullivan, if she steps out of line I want her stopped, permanently.” The other woman mumbled her acknowledgement and left. Inside the cell were only the two people, Miss Shaw, the Senior Prison Officer, lay where she had fallen, she was curled up, as a way of trying to protect herself. Butcher looked down at her for some seconds before acting.

Walking across the room she bent down and pulled the other woman upright, seeing the woman flinch she quickly spoke, “It’s OK, I’m just helping you up.”

Miss Shaw said nothing, her eyes, both swollen and purple with bruising, watched warily, when Butcher went behind her to lift her to her feet the prison officer’s head followed her round as far as possible. Butcher helped the injured woman to sit in a chair. Miss Shaw sat back in the chair, wincing as her back came into contact with the chair back. She rolled her shoulders uncomfortably, her arms still pulled back behind her, secured at the wrist by the telephone wire. The wire was cutting into her wrists already, small tracks of blood running down her hands.

Butcher found a glass and rinsed it out, she filled it with water and drank deeply, then, glancing over at her prisoner, she filled the glass again and walked over to her.

“Here,” she said, “You could probably do with this,”

Miss Shaw eyed the glass suspiciously for an instant, then took deep swallows of the cool liquid. When she had drained the glass she looked Butcher in the eyes, “Thanks,” she said quietly.

There was silence for a few minutes, and then Miss Shaw stirred, looking directly across at Butcher she spoke, “My staff?” Her voice was somewhat hoarse.

Butcher returned the gaze for some seconds, then, “They’re OK, a few bruises, but not much.”

The woman in the chair nodded, “What about the teachers?”

“Locked up in one of the cells, they haven’t been touched.” Butcher smiled slightly, “You’ve taken most of the punishment yourself. The price you pay for being the senior.”

Miss Shaw nodded again, “Knew there was a reason,” she said quietly, “why I should have refused promotion.”

Butcher gave a short bark of laughter. She looked across at the prison officer, “You know Sullivan might not have been quite so vicious if you’d kept your mouth shut.”

Miss Shaw looked over, “You know me better than that, Butcher.” A pause, then she continued, “Are you losing command to her?”

Butcher’s gaze narrowed, “Not a chance, Shaw.”

Another pause, during which Butcher rose and walked over to the sink to get another drink. On her way back she checked that Miss Shaw’s hands were still secured before offering her some more water. Once the woman had finished the drink, Butcher sat back on the bed, she sighed, “This is not what I had planned for tonight, you know!”

Miss Shaw smiled slightly, “Me neither,” she replied. She swallowed a couple of times then looked over at the other woman, “You do know, Butcher, that this is not going to end well. Don’t you?”

Butcher smiled, “You surprise me! You mean I’m not going to get my helicopter and one million dollars?”

Miss Shaw shook her head, “No, I’m afraid not,” she said quietly.

Butcher nodded, “I know,” she said, “I’ve done enough time to have seen how this will end. Sometime in the next 24-48 hours they’re going to send in the troops. SAS or some other Special Forces, they’ll be in full combat gear and carrying SMG’s and stun grenades. Against them, my women will have chair legs and home made knives. It will be slaughter. I would estimate up to 75% dead or injured. And the ringleaders will definitely be shot – I would imagine that’s the unwritten law. Am I right, Shaw?”

“Yes Butcher.” The woman didn’t seem particularly happy at the prospect.

“Of course, your own fate’s not much rosier, is it?”

The senior prison officer stared at her captor for some time, eventually she shook her head slightly, “I doubt it,” she said quietly. “I should imagine, within seconds of the SAS breaching the perimeter, there will be at least half a dozen inmates in here vying for the chance to cut my throat.”

“And I’d not be able to stop them.”

Miss Shaw nodded, “I know.”

I'm still pinning my rather feeble hopes on Butcher. Oh, dear!

*wibbles and ebbles some more*

ETA
I did a nearly synchronous post with Lesley there so my hopes, while still feeble, are on the right track.

Eurk!

Surely we're not going to see any throat-slitting on the CBB!

Honestly, I don't know what all the fuss is about. SAS? Special Forces? Combat geat? Grenades? What are they thinking? Don't they know that unfailingly-calm-in-the-face-of-mortal-danger Hilda Annersley lives nearby?

FULL LYRICS TO "ON THE INSIDE"
written by ALLAN CASWELL

Verse 1
He used to give me roses
I wish he could again
But that was on the outside
And things were different then

Verse 2
We build our world together
With a love so clear and strong
But that was on the outside
Where did I go wrong?

Chorus
On the inside the sun still shines
And the rain falls down
But the sun and rain are prisoners too
When morning comes around

Verse 3
Last night I dreamed we were together
Sharing all the love we'd known
'Til I had to face the nightmare
Of waking up alone

Repeat Chorus

New Chorus
On the inside the roses grow
They don't mind the stoney ground
But the roses here are prisoners too
When morning comes around

Verse 4
He used to give me roses
I wish he could again
But that was on the outside
And things were different then

There was silence for a short time, then Butcher leant back on the bed and gazed up at the ceiling. “All in all,” she said conversationally, “we should both of us have stayed in bed this morning!”

The Prison Officer gave a short laugh, “Yes,” she agreed quickly, leaning forwards slightly as the laugh caused her to cough. When she had recovered she looked across at Butcher once more, her face grave again, “There is an alternative, you know,”

“Alternative?”

Miss Shaw nodded, “You could give yourselves up, let everyone go. No-one would be killed then.”

“You mean you wouldn’t be killed, I suppose?”

The battered woman inclined her head, “Granted, I wouldn’t be killed, but neither would any of the other women here, neither would you.”

Butcher sat in thought for a time, then, regretfully, she shook her head, “It’s no go Shaw,” she said softly, “the consequences, once we’d given it all up.”

“What consequences?”

It was Butcher’s turn to laugh, “Dammit Shaw, don’t play games, you know as well as I what’ll happen once these women give themselves up. Solitary confinement, a really long stretch, loss of all remission, additional charges. You’ll have so many to choose from, riotous behaviour, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, grievous bodily harm, maybe even attempted murder. They’ll be lucky if they get just ten years slapped on their sentence.”

Miss Shaw said nothing at first, thinking, then, “That’s procedure, Butcher, you know that.”

“I know that, yeah, and for me it doesn’t matter. We both know I’ll die in prison. But there are some kids out there that have less than a year to go before they’re released. Your ‘procedures’ would turn them from kids who’ve made one mistake into hardened, career criminals.”

“I appreciate that some of them have been easily led, that they’ve taken part purely because everyone else has.”

“Yes, but there’s no way to identify them now. And lets face it, there will be other ways the prison service will ensure the women are punished for daring to lay hands on you.”

“The Service would never…”

“Crap jobs, with no way of ever being able to change them, surprise cell inspections, even surprise transfers. Women get given ten minutes notice they are being transferred, normally they are contacted late at night, first that their family know is when they arrive for a visit to be told their relative is now in a prison across the other side of the State.”

“No, that doesn’t happen, Butcher…”

“Don’t lie to me, Shaw!” Butcher was off of the bed, standing in front of the woman in the chair, she had a grip on the prison officer’s lapel with one hand, half pulling her from the chair, the other hand raised to strike. The pair stared at each other in silence, both breathing fast. After a few seconds Butcher pushed Miss Shaw back into the chair and turned away.

“Three years ago,” she said quietly, “before you were transferred to here, a friend of mine, Avril Bennett, we shared a cell. She upset the chief screw, the one before you, Masters, remember?”

Miss Shaw nodded very slightly.

“Well, one night, just after midnight, we’re both asleep, the door is suddenly unlocked and the lights switched on. Half a dozen screws standing outside, ordered her to pack up her stuff, she was moving, if she didn’t, they’d pack it for her, transport her in chains. She didn’t have much choice. You know what the worst thing was? Her parents arrived for a visit the next day, brought along her grandmother. They found out she’d been transferred across State. I heard later that Avril never did get to see her grandmother, the old woman couldn’t make the trip, she died a couple of days later.” Butcher turned to stare at the other woman, “Avril took that really hard, she’d been close to the old lady. A few months later she was killed attempting to escape.”

“I’m sorry,”

Butcher nodded, “Yeah, well don’t try and tell me that it doesn’t happen, because I’ve seen it.”

Her prisoner took a few deep breaths to steady herself, she swallowed, “Alright, it does happen,” Miss Shaw affirmed, “but not when I’m around Butcher, I swear.”

Butcher nodded slightly in acknowledgement, still pacing the cell she spoke again, “The Service will make their lives Hell, Shaw, and you know it. Given a choice most of them would prefer to die here. Especially as they’ll at least have the chance to…” she stopped abruptly.

The woman in the chair continued, “…the chance to kill a screw?”

“Yeah.”

In one of the other cells, the two prison officers waited in tense anticipation,

“What do you think is happening?” the younger of the two women looked across at her companion. Nicola Gordon was only 22 years old, she had been in the Prison Service barely a year.

The other woman shook her head, “I’m in here, Nicky, same as you,” Katya Mareck said with a half-smile.

“Yes, but you’ve been with the Service for almost ten years now, you’ve got experience.”

“The closest experience I’ve got to this is when I was on the hospital wing,” Katya replied, “we had a seriously ill patient run amok with a razor blade. That didn’t end all that well, he killed himself.”

“It wasn’t here then?”

“No, the men’s prison.” Mareck looked across at her companion, in her opinion Nicky Gordon wasn’t taking this too well, and that could be dangerous, if the women sensed just how close to the edge she was… “Look, Nicky, the only thing I can tell you is what the Senior Officer then told me, stay calm, don’t allow them to provoke you and hope the people outside know what they’re doing. We’ve got a decent chance of getting through this if the people outside call it right.”

“Does anyone outside know yet?”

“Must do, the women should all be back in their cells by now.”

There was silence for a time, then Nicky Gordon spoke again, “What about Miss Shaw? How much of a chance has she got?”

There was silence for some time, then Mareck replied softly, “Not much.”

“Thanks for what you’ve told me, Miss Annersley,” Ben Pieper was obviously extremely worried about his partner, but was managing to remain outwardly calm, “It’s far more than I was able to get, calling the police.”

“John here has contacts within the police force,” the Head replied, “we’ve managed to use his connections on a number of occasions. He and I are going to travel across to the prison now,” she continued, “you are welcome to join us.”

Ben took a deep breath, “Thanks, I was going to go there anyway, but perhaps you’ll be able to find out more. At the moment I feel so helpless…”

“Jackie will be helped knowing that you are there, thinking of her,” Hilda Annersley said softly, “and she’ll know you are there without having to be told.”

Ben smiled slightly, “I hope so,” he said, a small quiver in his voice, he swallowed, “I’ll just let the hospital know I won’t be in tomorrow,” he said, “that way I can stay there all night.” He disappeared out into the Admin block to use his mobile.

Miss Annersley looked round at the other inhabitants of her Study, “Nell, I’ll keep in close contact, of course, let you know what’s happening. Nancy, Rosalind, Sharlie, any news, you’ll be told immediately.”

“I want to come along, Hilda,” Nancy Wilmot’s voice was thick with emotion.

Miss Annersley looked across at the Maths Mistress for some seconds, then shook her head, “No Nancy, your presence there will not help Kathie. Remain here please.” Though phrased as a request the order was there, nonetheless.

Well at the moment Ben seems to be a lot calmer than Nancy is which might be why Hilda tells her not to come. Also if/when the school find out about it they're going to need all the teachers around to keep the kids calm I should think.

Or of course it could reopen the rift Confused

Also Hilda has no authority with which to tell Ben not to go and he was about to head over himself anyway (I think - suddenley having doubts in my memory...) before he came to the School, whereas Hilda does have some authority over Nancy especially if she ought to be on duty...

Hope it doesn't reopen the rift...

Now I know you're not going to believe me, but I've only just got in - for some reason when I wrote the message on Tuesday morning I thought it was Monday - hence the two nights/ Wednesday mistake - sorry.

A short time later, Miss Annersley left the Study; she first returned to the Staff Room to inform them of the latest news, then left with the two men to go to the prison.

Back in the Head’s Study there was silence for a while; with a quick inclination of her head, Nell Wilson moved the party into her own Study. She said nothing, just indicated that they all should sit, and busied herself making coffee. Sat around the table the four women stayed quiet; Nell was the first to speak,

“OK everyone, now we all know that if there’s anything that can be done, Hilda will do it. She’ll let me know of any developments immediately and I’ll contact the three of you. As the next-of-kin for Kathie, Peggy and Ruth you are all entitled to that.”

“As next-of-kin I should be there,” Nancy said bleakly, “and don’t tell me I’ll not be able to do anything, Jackie’s Ben is going, he won’t be able to do any more than me.”

“Hilda said that you were to stay here, Nancy,” Nell Wilson said patiently.

“Hilda said,” Nancy shot back, “Well this isn’t a School matter, Nell,”

The comment was greeted with silence, said silence being broken by Sharlie Andrews sneezing rapidly three times in success.

“Sorry everyone,” she said thickly, “this cold is really bad,”

“You belong in bed, Sharlie,” Nell said quickly, “you can’t help Peggy by forcing yourself to stay up.”

“Come along Sharlie, I’ll take you across to the Staff House,” Rosalind stood up and placed an arm around the smaller woman, “I promise, as soon as we hear anything, I’ll come and let you know.”

After Sharlie and Rosalind had left Nell looked across at Nancy Wilmot, “Come on Nancy,” she said, “I’ve got a small bottle of wine in here somewhere, I think you could do with a drink.” She smiled across at the taller woman, and walked round the back of her desk, opening a drawer to find the wine, Nancy stood up,

“I’m going to the prison, Nell,” she stated, her face determined.

“No, Nancy, you’re staying here, you can’t do anything there to help.”

“I don’t care, I have to be there, for Kathie. And don’t try and stop me, Nell.” She went to walk out of the Study. Nell walked across to stand in front of her, blocking her exit.

“That’s far enough, Nancy,” she said, her voice, although determined, was gentle, recognising the distress her friend and colleague was feeling.

“Get out of my way, Nell,” and the tone of voice from gentle, even-tempered Nancy was surprising. “I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You won’t hurt me, Nancy, and you are not going. You appearing at the prison is not going to help Kathie.”

Nancy moved forward, “I’m bigger and taller then you, Nell, I out-weigh you, get out of my way, I don’t want to hurt you.” As she said this she made a rush for the door, Nell caught hold of her by the shoulders and swung her across to the wall, holding her there with surprising ease, despite Nancy’s struggles.

“Well Nance, you’re stronger than Hilda, I grant you, but I can still hold you, and will, all night if I have to,” Nell’s voice was still gentle, with some amusement.

“Let me go, Nell,” Nancy sounded close to tears, “you don’t understand, Kathie is...” unable to say anymore she bowed her head.

“Kathie is in danger, you want to help her, in any way you can,” Nell said softly, “but Nancy, if you go there, and the women holding Kathie find out that her female partner is outside, don’t you think that might increase her danger? She could be placed in even more peril if they discover that her partner is another woman.”

Nancy stopped struggling and gazed at Nell in some shock, “You think it might?”

Nell nodded, “Possibly,” she watched as this seemed to get through to the Maths Head, “now, if I let you go, do I have your word that you’ll not try and run for the door again?”

Nancy smiled slightly, “If I refuse, will you hold me here all night?”

“If I have to,” Nell Wilson replied sternly.

Nancy thought for a time, then reluctantly bowed her head, “OK you have my word.”

Nell stepped back, watching sympathetically, “Take a seat, Nancy,” she said, “I’ll get that wine.”

Now know what day it is!!!! It is almost a week since the 'patio door' incident - and my toe hurts more than ever today! bawling

At the prison it was difficult, at first, to get through the sea of people gathered outside; the Police had set up barriers and all Press and on-lookers had to remain outside. Not even John Coates’ connections seemed to be of help as the blank faced young police officers did not allow anyone close enough to speak. Miss Annersley was surprised by a tap on her shoulder,

“I thought it was you, good evening Miss Annersley,” it was the prison officer Mrs Francis, her expression, though with a slight smile as she greeted the Head, was grave and drawn, “Come with me,”

The prison officer led the others over to where the one break in the police cordon was manned by both Police officers and prison staff. They waved through Mrs Francis and her party. Inside the cordon they moved across to the main entrance, Mrs Francis showed her ID card and was issued with a set of keys. She drew the others through into the Admin block of the prison and into an office there.

“I can understand why you are here, Miss Annersley,” she began, “you want to know about your Staff?”

Hilda nodded, “Of course,” she said quickly, she indicated Ben Pieper sat beside her, “This is Mr Pieper, partner of Miss Jones, my Drama Mistress, John Coates, my Security Chief. Is there anything you can tell us?”

“The news on the TV is at least partially accurate,” Mrs Francis replied, “there has been a riot, it happened sometime between eight and nine pm, was only discovered when the women didn’t return to their cells for lock up. They have an extension to the normal time, you see.”

“Normal time being eight,” Miss Annersley said softly,

Mrs Francis nodded, “Well, when some of my colleagues went across, it was to find that the doors were all barricaded, no way in without forcing them, and they were told that any attempt at forcing the doors would mean they would harm the hostages.”

“Is anything known about the well being of the hostages?”

Mrs Francis shook her head, “Nothing yet,” she said somewhat bleakly, “There’s a police negotiator trying to get them to talk, but so far he doesn’t seem to be managing to establish any connection.”

“Who…?”

“It’s Butcher,” Mrs Francis interrupted, anticipating the question, “she’s in charge, strange in a way because this is not her style.”

“What are her demands?”

“She hasn’t made any, not so far as I know,” Mrs Francis looked down at the floor, as if contemplating whether to continue, Miss Annersley caught the reluctance and rose, walking across to one of the barred windows in the office, the prison officer followed her.

“You have something more to add?” she asked Mrs Francis softly,

Mrs Francis thought for a moment, then nodded, “Butcher’s no fool, she knows that the Authorities cannot be seen to give in to any demands made by convicts.”

“You mean the fact that they are holding people prisoner?”

“Won’t matter, they’ve already been considered expendable if necessary.”

Miss Annersley stared at the prison officer for some seconds, “What of attempting to rescue them by force?”

“Oh yes, they’ll have that in reserve, will definitely try to use it, especially if they think they are close to killing the hostages. But the problem is the inmates know this, and however quick the rescue attempt, it probably won’t be quick enough. And Geri, Katya and Nicky all know that,”

The Head looked puzzled, “Geri, Katya..?”

“Oh, I thought you knew,” Mrs Francis said quickly, “the three officers being held hostage, Katya Mareck, Nicola Gordon and Geraldine Shaw.”

“Miss Shaw is one of the hostages?”

Mrs Francis nodded, “Look, I can take you across to where the police have set up an incident room, any information will come in to there, the negotiators may want to speak to you about your Staff anyway. You’ll certainly get the most up-to-date information.”

Miss Annersley nodded, “Thank you,”

Inside the Education block, in the largest classroom, where those women not given duties by Butcher or her people congregated, there was a quiet conversation continuing.

“Now we planned all of this, we made the screws and teachers prisoners, worked out the best times, sorted out knives from the metal shop. So how come we’re not the ones running everything now?” The person speaking was called Taylor, she was halfway through a ten year stretch for aggravated assault and armed robbery.

“Butcher is in overall charge,” a faceless voice from the crowd.

Taylor swung round, “Why? Because she always has been? Come on, Butcher stops all the schemes in this nick, Hell, she even stopped us beating Shaw. Doesn’t that show you whose side she’s on?”

Another voice joined, “Butcher has made no demands either, If I didn’t know better I’d think she wished this had never happened.” The voice was that of Sullivan.

“Perhaps she feels we won’t get anywhere…”

“Crap! All we’ve got to do is show we mean business. We kill Shaw, the pigs outside will fall over backwards to grant our demands, so none of the precious teachers get hurt - can’t have that, can they? Public relations nightmare…”

“But Butcher…”

“You know something? You’re right, Butcher’s the problem, so what are we going to do about it?”

In one word, Lesley - "ouch!!!" This situation is untenable, whichever way you look at it, for the teachers and staff held hostage, and for the prisoners themselves who clearly don't know what to do. And if they turn on one of their own.....!

Nell certainly used the only argument which would have any effect on Nancy, and thank goodness she did.

Glad you've finally got the days of the week sorted out - I have the problem all the time, too, especially when (as happens here next week) there is a long weekend!!

After Butcher had left, and the cell door had been slammed shut and locked, Miss Shaw had sat, uncomfortably, to wait. The cell she was in was just an interim holding cell, it had no windows, only basic facilities. Unlike earlier, when she had been able to pace the floor, the prison officer sat, hunched up, trying to ignore the pain in her side and her back. Every so often there was a noise at the door as the catch covering the peephole was lifted, after a time she realised that the women outside were allowing all the inmates the chance to see her as a prisoner. Once she’d realised that she stopped reacting to the sound.

At one point the power flickered off and she was left sat in the pitch black for at least forty minutes. The women outside didn’t say anything to her, didn’t even check to see if she were alright, after all, where would she have gone? A short time after the lights flickered back on again, she estimated it must be after midnight, she made a decision. Standing gingerly she walked across to the door and kicked it a couple of times,

“Anyone out there?” Her voice was stronger than she had expected, she straightened slightly, “I said, anyone out there?”

The door was unlocked and two inmates looked in, “We heard you, screw,” one of them said, “What do you want?“

Miss Shaw swallowed slightly, “I need to speak to Butcher,” she said quietly, “It’s important.“

“For you maybe, screw, but Butcher’s busy. Now sit down and shut up.” The woman made to slam the door shut once more.

The prison officer took a deep breath, “Please,” she said very quietly, “Ask Butcher to come and speak to me, it is important.” She stared at the floor while making the request, on looking up her gaze caught that of one of the women,

“Sit down, Shaw,” the woman ordered, “I’ll see if Butcher can fit you in.”

It was only a short time later that the sound of keys in the lock jerked Miss Shaw awake; ‘it was funny,’ she thought, ‘previously she had never considered the sound to be menacing, and she must have locked and unlocked thousands of doors. Now though, with her own set of keys opening the door, she looked over with a heightened sense of anticipation, and, she admitted quietly, some fear.’

Butcher stood in the doorway, “You said it was important, Shaw, it had better be,” she came in and sat on the bed, “Well?”

Miss Shaw looked across at her captor, “You said earlier that giving yourselves up was not an option,” she began, “because of the consequences. Suppose you were given assurances about those consequences, that they wouldn’t be as severe as you feared?”

Butcher stared at the woman for some seconds, “I’m listening,” she said quickly.

“No midnight transfers, no continual cell searches, decent jobs, I can guarantee all of those, Butcher, as Senior Officer you know that has never been my style.”

“Why should you be bothered?”

Miss Shaw gave a slight laugh, “Because I want to live of course,” she said, “and I don’t want anyone else in here to die either. The concessions are nothing, just a continuation of my own standards.”

“What about charges? The rest is all very well, but the charges will still be piled on, an extra ten years for each woman? They’d never wear it.”

“I can’t do anything about that, the prison authorities and magistrates are…”

“Then you’re wasting my time, Shaw,” Butcher got up to leave.

“No,” Shaw’s voice was strong now, “as I said, I can’t do anything about that, but I will speak out against it. And you could speak with the negotiator, get them to agree to reducing the main charges for all except the ringleaders.”

“Except the ringleaders?”

Shaw nodded, “There has to be some public retribution, Butcher, you know that, you can’t expect to get off scot-free.”

Butcher thought for a time then slowly nodded, “OK,” she said, “I’ll go with that, but there's still a major problem."

“That’s about all I can tell you, Nell,” Hilda Annersley, using a landline set up in the incident room, spoke to her partner. Across the room, pacing next to a window, was Ben Pieper, too wound up to think of resting. John Coates was with one of the Police Sergeants, an old friend. The Head continued, “As far as we know the hostages are all alright, but nothing much is known.”

“Haven’t the negotiators been able to get any information?” Nell’s voice was very quiet.

Hilda shook her head, “No, apparently Butcher has refused to speak to him after he ordered the power shut off. From what Mrs Francis has said, some of the other Police Officers think he’s had the wrong approach from the start, he’s far too condescending. Seems to think that women can’t be as nasty as men.”

“I’ll come over and show him otherwise if you want!” Nell’s voice was still quiet but laced with amusement.

“Oh I’m sure he’ll learn soon, I intend to educate him myself if progress isn’t made soon!” This said somewhat grimly, “How are the others?”

“Mostly gone to bed now, I think. Sharlie is asleep, Nancy Chester gave her something, poor girl has a terrible cold, and sitting up worrying all night isn’t going to help. Rosalind is spending the night on her couch, so that if news comes they will be together.”

“What about Nancy Wilmot? She’s not on her own is she?”

Nell, sat on the sofa in her cottage, looked down, Nancy Wilmot was curled up on the sofa, her head on Nell’s lap, she was fast asleep. “No,” she said softly, “Nancy’s not alone.”

I suspect that Hilda may be taking over the negotiations before too long. Of course I may be wrong - I've only once been right with a guess in a RCS story!!! (Though then I was certain, so it probably doesn't count!)

Think my money is also on Hilda taking over the negotiations in the end - though just how soon that will be is anybody's guess!

Glad that Nell can be there for Nancy at this point, also that Sharlie and Rosalind are together.

Please *don't* keep us in suspense for too long with this, Lesley - I know what I'd like to see happen, but knowing you, there are bound to be some surprises!

In the cell Miss Shaw looked across at Butcher, “What problem?”

Butcher didn’t speak for a while, her first inclination being to dismiss the question, instead she rose and paced the floor for some seconds, looking over she spoke once more, “I need some information from you Shaw,” she said flatly.

Miss Shaw said nothing immediately, watching as Butcher came and sat on the bed opposite her once more, when she spoke it was with determination, “I will not betray any confidences, Butcher.”

Butcher smiled, “Not asking you to,” she said softly, she leant forwards, brushing her hand down Shaw’s face, Miss Shaw flinched as her hand ran across the bruises, “and I’m not planning on adding to these, at least not yet,” she continued.

“Then wha…”

Butcher interrupted, “…negotiators, what do you know about them?”

Miss Shaw sat back, looking intently at the woman opposite.

Butcher nodded, “I’ve tried talking to them, what can you tell me about them?”

The Senior Officer thought for a moment, “They’re a specialist branch of the Police Force,” she replied, “Trained to speak to those who’ve barricaded themselves in places, normally with hostages. They build up a rapport with the criminals, try to work out ways to resolve a situation peacefully.”

“The one I’m speaking to is an idiot.” Butcher stated. “He won’t listen to me, he has his own agenda, I’m sure he doesn’t believe I’m serious. His attitude is one of condescension.”

“Ask for another.”

“He says there isn’t one. I’ve suggested other people I’ll speak to, he has refused every one.”

“The people you’ve suggested?”

“People I trust, people that know me.”

“Ex-convicts?”

Butcher shrugged, “I’ve been in prison for nine years, who else do I know but convicts and screws? And I don’t trust screws.”

“But he, and the authorities outside, will not trust any ex-convict.” Shaw said quickly.

“Yeah, so I figured, any ideas?”

Miss Shaw thought for a moment, then brightened, “Yes, one,” she said, “what about Annersley?”

Butcher smiled, “You may just have something there, yes, Annersley I can trust, it’s her people in here after all. I know she’ll be honest, and she’s respectable enough to satisfy the pigs outside. Thanks Shaw, I’ll sort it.” She stood up again and went to leave the cell.

“One thing, Butcher,” the prison officer didn’t look up to meet the other woman’s gaze, instead looking at the floor.

“What?”

Miss Shaw swallowed rapidly a few times before responding, her voice very quiet, she looked up quickly, “These wires, my hands, cou…”

“No,” Butcher’s reply was unequivocal, “the wires stay on, Shaw, my people need something to see, to show them they have control. You’re it.”

I'm going to get seriously peeved if people keep guessing my storylines! Wink

“Now, Miss Annersley, do you understand what I’m asking you to do?” The man asking the question was fairly short and muscular, his name was Martin Glover, he was the Police Negotiator.

Miss Annersley nodded, “Yes, Mr Glover,” she replied softly, “You are asking me to do your job for you. As Butcher will not now speak to you.”

Glover swallowed slightly, “Not exactly,” he said quickly, “Sometimes criminals insist on speaking to others, people they know. I gather that Ann Butcher knows you through the literacy programme?”

“Not quite,” the Head replied, “she and I met when I was in prison, on a charge of murder.”

There was a stunned silence, the man looked across at the older, grey haired lady nearby for confirmation, Mrs Knight, Governor of the prison, nodded, smiling, “Quite correct, Mr Glover, Miss Annersley was our guest for a week last year.”

“I-I-I see,” Glover seemed stunned, he rallied somewhat, “Well, regardless, Ann Butcher has requested that she speak to you. Now don’t worry, I’ll be beside you, able to offer advice. For instance, I noticed that you referred to her as Butcher, I have always found using first names to be friendlier, builds a rapport with the person, also, don’t make any demands, just continue to stress that you want to help.”

“Is that why you switched the power off?” John Coates said bluntly, “that hardly showed you wanted to help, more of a threat if you ask me.”

“I had to show her that her position is untenable,” Glover shot back, “She didn’t appear to realise the seriousness of her situation.”

“I think Butcher is well aware of the seriousness,” Miss Annersley put in, sitting herself at a small desk and being shown the headphones and microphone, another police officer dialled the number for the Education block.

“Now remember, Miss Annersley, friendly, first name terms, build a rapport.” Glover said beside her.

Hilda nodded slightly, then froze, hearing the receiver being picked up, “Butcher? Is that you? This is Annersley, you wanted to speak to me?”

“Annersley! Thank God, thought that idiot would never find you.” The relief in Butcher’s tones as apparent.

“I’ve been here all along, Butcher,” Miss Annersley ignored the attempts by Glover to get her to change her approach. “Now you have four of my people in there, and three prison warders, are they well?”

“They’re all OK,” Butcher replied, “your teachers haven’t been touched, the screws are OK, Shaw is a bit bruised but that’s all.”

In the incident room those Police listening all exchanged pointed glances, that was more information than the Negotiator had obtained after hours of talking.

“Well I can accept that, Butcher, but not everyone here knows you.” Hilda Annersley replied swiftly, “can you prove what you say?”

“Sure I can, but I’ll need something back in return.” Butcher said firmly.

At this Glover had interrupted, forcing Miss Annersley to switch off the microphone, “You are not to give her anything,” he said firmly, “we have to negotiate from a point of strength, these criminals will respect nothing less.”

“This particular criminal respects honesty,” the Head replied, “and, if it means we have positive proof of the well being of the hostages, we can at least listen to what she wants in return.”

“I cannot allow you to do this, you will be seriously jeopardising the safety of the hostages.”

Inside the cell holding the four RCS Mistresses, the four continued to sit on the two beds. They had passed the time talking about different things, ranging from recollections of the fictional world, to impressions of Australia. Jackie had told of living in England, while Peggy was able to remember a little about the Tyrol and Guernsey. None of them had been able to sleep, even when the lights were all switched off for some forty minutes or so. Instead they remained sat on the narrow beds, occasionally moving to the small sink to get a drink. The rest of the time sitting close to each other, drawing strength from their shared ordeal.

This scene was suddenly shattered when, without warning, the cell door was unlocked and opened, the four looked across to see Butcher standing there, her face was expressionless, she looked round at the four, “Which of you’s senior?” she said.

The women all looked at each other, no one saying anything, then Ruth nodded, “That would be me,” she said, “I’m senior,”

“Right, come with me, you will help me prove something to those outside.”

Ruth stood and walked over to the door, as she did Butcher also pointed to another, “You come too, got a job for you!”

Jackie got up and joined Ruth, the two, flanked by four inmates, left the cell, Butcher nodded and closed the cell door. The sound of the key turning in the lock the only thing to pierce the silence within the cell.

Ruth and Jackie were quickly separated, Jackie taken down a different corridor with some of the inmates, while Ruth walked with Butcher. They entered the main Staff Room for the Education Block, Butcher pointed to a telephone.

“Someone wants to talk to you,” she said gruffly, as Ruth walked across and sat beside the phone Butcher placed a hand on her arm, “Be careful what you say,” she warned.

Ruth Derwent picked up the phone, “Er, hello?” she said diffidently.

“Ruth? Is that you? How are you?”

“Hilda!” Ruth Derwent’s voice almost broke, she felt such relief, “How can you be there?”

“Butcher asked that I speak to her,” Hilda Annersley replied, “Now how are you? And the rest of the Staff?”

Ruth took a deep breath, “I’m fine, we’re all fine, they haven’t hurt us, just stopped us from leaving. We’re all locked up in…” she stopped as Butcher touched her arm, warning her, she nodded at the convict, “We’re all locked up together.” she finished.

“Peggy, Kathie and Jackie are all unharmed?”

“Yes, we’re all fine.”

“Good,” Ruth could hear the relief in her boss’ voice. “Now what of the prison officers, do you know how they are?”

“Not really,” Ruth replied, “We’ve not seen them for hours, since we were first captured and placed in the cell. I know Miss Shaw was in a cell on her own, the other two were together.”

“Very well,” Miss Annersley replied, “let me speak to Butcher,”

Ruth passed the phone to the leader of the inmates, “What now, Annersley? That’s your proof,”

“Only for my Staff, Butcher, not for the prison officers. I need to speak to them…”

“No, they are not coming to the phone,” Butcher replied firmly, she thought for a moment, “I can let Ruth here see them though, come back and tell you, will that do?”

Back in the Incident Room Miss Annersley’s expression didn’t change, she allowed none of her satisfaction to show. John Coates was not quite so restrained, “I told you she knew what she was doing,” he said, directing his comments toward the hapless Glover. The Negotiator had been overruled by the other Police officers on site when it came to how Miss Annersley was to conduct the negotiations. Glover had been hoping her methods would fail.

“That will be fine, Butcher, but I’ll need something to prove that Miss Derwent is not being coerced into saying they are alive, if they are not.”

“No problem,” Butcher replied, “and the food?”

“Being delivered to your front door as we speak.”

When the inmates had separated Ruth and Jackie, the Drama Mistress suddenly realised how much she had been relying on the Senior Mistress’ presence. Now, finding herself alone with three unknown women, she allowed herself a small nervous swallow and a whispered plea for aid. “Where are you taking me?” she asked.

“Kitchen,” the reply was gruff but at least it was a reply.

The women walked down another corridor and into a fairly large room, it had a number of lab benches and, at one end, three or four ovens. Jackie looked at it in some surprise. While she was still looking two of the women disappeared, leaving Jackie with the third. As Jackie looked across the woman retrieved a knife from her pocket, showed it to the other woman, then returned it to her pocket. It was a warning, but a subtle one.

“Sit down, teacher,” she said.

Jackie nodded and sat, she looked around again, “I didn’t realise that the Education Block had cooking facilities,” she said, determined to strike up a conversation.

The woman glanced round, “Screws run housekeeping lessons, including cookery, not everyone’s interested in academic stuff. What do you teach then?”

“Drama,” Jackie replied, “and some singing.”

The woman snorted, “Drama, what’s the point of that? It don’t mean anything.”

Jackie looked across, “Drama is exceptionally important,” she said quietly, “you watch TV shows and films, don’t you? The actors and actresses there, they have all had to learn of drama.”

The woman shrugged, “Just learning lines ain’t it?”

Jackie shook her head, “No, not learning lines. Anyone with a good memory can learn lines, but the truly exceptional actors and actresses can, reading a simple line, allow you to feel all the emotion that the character is supposed to be feeling, be it joy or sorrow, rage or despair. The truly gifted can, without the aid of props, music, costume or background, recite a line from Shakespeare and have you falling in love with Juliet, sing a few verses from a musical, and have you feeling desperately sorry for the Phantom. They allow the playwright or writer to speak through their words and actions.”

The woman looked impressed, Jackie had been eloquent, “And that’s what you do then? Teach that?”

“Well, I try,” Jackie said.

“So why are you here then?”

“Part of my degree included English, I was interested in helping others to read and write.”

“Not seen you before.”

“This is my first time.”

“Jees but you’re unlucky!” The woman half smiled and Jackie found herself responding.

At that point there was an interruption, the other two women returned, each of them carrying a large number of flat boxes. They spread them out on the bench top.

“OK Teach,” the first woman said, “this is what we want you to do,” she pointed to the boxes, “You’re our official taster, Butcher has got some woman outside to send in some food, she trusts the woman but ain’t so sure about the Police, so you’re going to taste a random number of these pizzas, check they’ve not been laced with anything.”

Jackie looked at the woman then the boxes, “Good thing I like pizza,” she said, accepting the first slice from the woman.

Ruth Derwent walked alongside Butcher back to the row of cells; stopping outside one cell, Butcher bent to unlock it, “OK Ruth, inside and check, so you can report back to your boss.” Her voice was almost friendly.

Ruth Derwent stopped and took a deep breath, when she replied it was with a hint of challenge in her voice, “No problem, Ann,” she said quickly.

Butcher looked over at her thoughtfully, her expression darkening slightly, then she nodded, almost imperceptibly, “Your boss, she teaches this sort of thing, does she?”

Ruth Derwent swallowed, “She insists on respect.”

“Right,” Butcher paused, then, “OK Derwent, inside and check,”

“Yes Butcher.”

Inside the cell the two prison officers looked up at her arrival, Ruth took only a short time to explain why she was there, both the women were able to give her information to pass on to Miss Annersley. She was with them only a few minutes before Butcher insisted on her leaving. The next cell they stopped at was the one Ruth had seen Miss Shaw dragged into a lot earlier. Butcher opened the cell and pointed Ruth in without comment.

Inside the cell Miss Shaw was again jerked awake by the sound of the keys, this time though, the face at the door was that of Miss Derwent.

Ruth moved across to kneel beside the chair, “Good God, what happened to you?” she said in shocked tones, taking in the bruising to the woman’s face, her hunched position.

Miss Shaw gave a half-smile, “Some of the women objected to my management style,” she whispered,

Ruth glared across at Butcher, the woman was standing just inside the cell, she shook her head, “No, not me,” she said.

“Then who?”

“Doesn’t matter, get the information you need, then you can get back and pass it on.”

Miss Derwent shook her head, “No, I can’t just leave, let me help her, at least a little, otherwise I’ll not be able to pass on any information.”

She didn’t think it was possible for someone to move that fast, but suddenly Butcher was beside her, pushing her back against the cell wall, holding her there, “That wasn’t an attempt to blackmail me, was it Derwent? Because I should tell you I respond really badly to blackmail.”

Ruth swallowed quickly, attempted to struggle, but found herself held fast, “No, Butcher, no blackmail, I swear.” Her eyes held those of the other women, “but please, let me help her.”

Butcher held Ruth for a few more seconds then released her saying, “Ten minutes Derwent, no more, and don’t release her hands, you understand?”

Ruth nodded, “Yes, Butcher.”

The cell door slammed shut behind Butcher and the two women were left alone, Miss Shaw looked across at Ruth, “Thank you,” she said quietly, “but be careful, Butcher will be pushed only so far.”

Ruth nodded, “Yes, the way she came at me then…” she swallowed a few times, took a deep breath, “well, let’s see what I can do in ten minutes.”

“Not much,” the woman in the chair replied, “I think it’s mainly bruising anyway, though I’m not sure about my ribs,” she managed to indicate down her left side.

Ruth moved across, lifted the prison officer’s shirt, even in the dim lighting in the cell the extent of the bruising was such that it was obvious there was a more serious problem beneath. Ruth ran her hand gently down the side, noting when Miss Shaw winced.

“I think you’ve got a couple of cracked ribs,” she said hesitantly, “can’t be sure, I’m no medic, but I do have First Aid qualifications.”

Miss Shaw nodded, “Like all in the Service,” she said, “I did wonder if the ribs were cracked. Well, there’s not much can be done for them.”

“No, but I can ease the pain a little, both there and the bruising on your face.” Ruth walked across to the small sink and ran the cold tap for a while, she soaked a number of paper towels then, holding them, moved back to the woman. She then held the towels as cold compresses in two places, against her left side and across both bruised eyes. The woman breathed fast, obviously in pain, but allowing Ruth to continue. After some minutes she removed the compresses, “Best I can do, I’m afraid,” she said apologetically.

Miss Shaw nodded, “It does seem to have helped,” she said, “and just having someone to talk to has helped.”

Ruth squatted down next to the other woman, “Of course, you’ve been on your own all this time.”

“Well except when some of the inmates have come visiting,” Miss Shaw said, smiling.

Ruth didn’t smile, “How can you remain so cheerful?” she said softly, looking directly into the seated woman’s eyes.

There was a pause, then, “Because I refuse to cry in front of the inmates.”

Ruth stared, “You’re a brave lady, Miss Shaw.”

“Geri,” Ruth looked confused, “I think, with our shared ordeal, you can call me by my first name, it’s Geri.”

“Geri?” Ruth asked.

“Well, Geraldine actually, but the only person that ever used to call me that was my mother, when I’d done something wrong!” Miss Shaw smiled.

“Geri it is,” Ruth returned the smile, “and I’m Ruth, now I…” She stopped as the cell door opened, one of the inmates stood there with a flat box. She thrust it at Ruth.

“Here teacher, your friend has tested all the food. Butcher says to feed her too, but hurry up.”

The door was slammed shut again.

Ruth looked in the box, there were a number of slices of pizza.

“I’m not really hungry,” Miss Shaw said.

“Doesn’t matter,” Ruth replied, “you need to keep your strength up,” she sat on the bed beside the other woman and picked up one of the slices, “Here, eat this.”

When Butcher opened the door a few minutes later it was to discover most of the pizza eaten and Miss Shaw drinking her second glass of water. She appeared to be slightly more comfortable.

“That’s enough Derwent, get the info you need. Annersley will want it.”

Miss Shaw looked across at Ruth Derwent, “Tell Miss Annersley that I still remember the pause she made, when replying to my telling her of prison orders. I knew even then that she could be trouble.”

“I’ll tell her,” Ruth promised, “and you hold on, if anyone can get us out of here, it’s Hilda Annersley. I’ll see you soon, Geri.” She stepped out of the cell as she was saying this, the door was slammed shut and locked.

Miss Shaw looked across at the metal door, “I hope so, Ruth,” she whispered.

Thanks Lesley. Sorry I guessed publicly! Rolling Eyes

And those of you trying to sit on tenter hooks - you really don't want to do that!!! The are sharp pointed hooks that are used to stretch material. They cause the tiny holes you find down the selvedge. Very very nasty.

By the time Ruth Derwent had reported back to Hilda Annersley, giving proof that the three prison officers were alive, it was nearly dawn. The siege had been going on since just after 8pm the night before. The conversation with Butcher after Ruth had finished speaking, had been somewhat productive. Butcher had spoken of Shaw’s ideas about how the siege could be ended and Miss Annersley had listened intently then promised to pass on the requests.

In the Incident Room Miss Annersley was speaking with some of the Senior Police Offices, Mrs Knight and John Coates. She came away from the meeting just as a call was put through to her, it was Nell Wilson.

“You’re up early Nell.”

Nell Wilson chuckled, “I bet I’ve had more sleep than you, Hilda,”

“I’ll not take the bet, Nell,” Hilda smiled, “I’ll give you a quick update, it’s looking hopeful, and we’ve had positive proof that all the hostages are alive.”

A short time later, after hearing all the news Nell nodded to herself, “Good, well I’ll pass on the information to Nancy, Rosalind and Sharlie. I’ll also speak at Assembly, I should imagine a number of the girls have heard, they’ve got radios and TV’s in their Common Rooms and Dorms.”

“Do that Nell, and also try and catch Cherry, let her know - she might be worried about friends of hers.”

“Will it be enough, Butcher?” The woman asking the question was the same one that had taken Jackie Jones to the kitchen. She was one of Butcher’s closest lieutenants, had been with her for more than two years, her name was Sara Rees.

“Let’s hope so, Rees, if Annersley can’t swing it we might as well just go and wait for the military.”

Rees nodded, “Didn’t realise earlier,” she said, “that you were talking to her, I remember her from when she was inside, she made an impression.”

“Yeah, she did that.” Butcher yawned, “Make sure all the guards on the cells are changed, would you? They are all getting tired, don’t want any mistakes. Check out the prisoners too, here,” she passed across a set of keys.

“What about you?”

“I’m just going to take a quick check round, see that the women in the main rooms are getting some sleep.”

“Take care.”

“Always.”

Inside their cell both Jackie and Ruth had related to the others what had happened, Ruth watched as just the mention of the Head’s name seemed to cause everyone to relax. “We’re not out of this yet,” she warned, “any number of things might go wrong.”

“Understood, Ruth,” Peggy replied, “but you must admit, just knowing that makes it seem better.”

Before anyone could respond there was the sound of a key in the lock, a voice outside was speaking, “You can see everything through the peephole, Richards, so you’ll not need to have a set of keys. Butcher has the other two sets herself, didn’t want anyone else going in to the hostages unless she were there.”

“That’s OK Rees, can’t think of any reason I’d…”

“Mel?” The shocked voice was that of Kathie Ferrars, “Mel Richards? And you’re taking part in all of this? My God, I thought I knew you, made some sort of difference.”

The young woman gulped slightly then looked across, “Hello Miss Ferrars,” she said quickly.

“Hello Miss Ferrars? Is that all you can say?” Kathie was incensed, “You’re part of this, one of the guards no less, and you just say hello?” She stalked across, so angry that she wasn’t fully thinking about what she was doing.

Rees stepped in front of Richards, “Step back, teacher,” she said softly, “this situation meant Richards had no more choice than most of us. And I will stop you, if I have to.” She held up the knife in her right hand. Between them Ruth and Peggy dragged her back to the bed, held her there.

“I’m sorry Miss Ferrars,” Richards said quickly, “I couldn’t not join, now could I? Do you know what everyone else would have done to me?”

Kathie said nothing, just stared. Rees beckoned over Jackie Jones, “Tell your friend to cool it, Teach,” she said quickly, “tempers are hot enough in here.”

In the main classroom, where those women without a specific job were gathered, it was fairly quiet. In one corner some of the women had found the TV and switched it on, watching all the news broadcasts of themselves, the rest of the women though seemed to be trying to sleep, or were playing cards. Butcher looked round quickly, Sullivan was asleep in one corner, since the incident in Shaw’s cell she had stayed far away from Butcher. In a way Butcher was disappointed, she had thought the woman would give her more of a fight.

On her way out of the classroom, one of the women watching TV glanced across, then called out. “Hey, Butcher, wait a sec!”

Butcher turned to see the woman get up and walk over to join her, “Mind if I join you for a minute?”

Butcher shrugged, she knew the woman, name of Taylor, until recently she had been loyal to Butcher, but in the month or so since Sullivan had appeared, she had drifted over to her camp. She waited for the other woman to catch up, then spoke, “What’s up, Taylor? Getting bored with Sullivan?”

Taylor smiled ruefully, “Yes, if you want to know,” she sighed, “I’m sorry Butcher, she seemed to have more going for her, but she’s all hot air, doesn‘t have any bottle.”

“And you expect me to take you back, Taylor? Just like that?” Butcher sounded sceptical.

“No, of course not,” the pair were now outside in the corridor, walking over to the Staff Room, “But I can help you out, prove to you that I’m serious.”

“I’m listening.”

“Well I know where Sullivan has a stash of weapons here in the Education Block.”

“I’ve got all the weapons I need.”

“You got guns?”

Butcher looked across in some shock, “You serious?” she demanded.

Taylor nodded, “I’m serious, why d’you think she was so sure she’d be able to break out of here?”

“If Sullivan has access to guns, two questions, first, why didn’t she use them straight away? And why is she sleeping like a baby in there, instead of collecting them?”

“Because of you. You weren’t expected to be here, she hadn’t realised that you sometimes come across to check things out. And you’ve scared the sh*t out of her.”

Butcher looked at the other woman, “If you’re lying to me Taylor…”

“Why would I lie? I’ll show you where they’re hidden, shall I? Sullivan has a mate on the outside, got a job with a firm that has the contract to empty the waste. The bins were all emptied yesterday, remember? Well, one of the wheelie bins has a false bottom to it.”

“The bins will be outside.”

“No, they’re inside the block, beneath the kitchens.”

“And the gun will be there?”

“Guns, Sullivan’s mate said twenty of them, and clips of ammo.”

“Clips?”

“Yes, didn’t I say? The guns are sub-machine guns.”

The two women walked swiftly toward the kitchens, Butcher still sceptical, but unable to dismiss the possibility that Taylor was telling the truth. In the kitchen a lone guard was sat, playing patience, she looked up hurriedly as Butcher appeared.

“Anything?”

“No, Butcher, quiet as a grave.”

“Right, well keep an eye out, Taylor and I have to check something.” Butcher walked over to the back of the room and unlocked a door, peering out she then beckoned Taylor to join her, “Come on, you can help!”

“Didn’t realise you’d have had a guard here,” Taylor remarked.

“Anywhere there’s an opening to the outside, Taylor,” Butcher said quickly, “got to be thorough.”

The two women walked out into the small yard. It was surrounded by high fences, the only gate was securely locked. They walked across to where three or four bins stood.

It was only a short time later that the two women returned, Taylor entered the kitchen first, as she did, Butcher was speaking, “Well obviously Sullivan must have lied to you, said there were guns to make the siege more feasible.”

Taylor smiled, as Butcher entered the kitchen she spoke, “No Butcher, I think she said it for a far simpler reason.”

Butcher looked round, inside the kitchen were a number of other women, she saw the woman she had left on guard, she had two other women holding her on the floor, a knife to her throat. She saw there were four other women, five if you included Taylor. They were all looking determined, if a little worried, except one. One woman was just smiling, it was Sullivan.

Butcher looked across at Taylor, “I’ll remember this, Taylor,” she said very softly and despite herself Taylor paled slightly.

“Take no notice, Taylor,” Sullivan said lazily, “Butcher’s not going to be able to do anything to anyone.”

Butcher looked across at her, “So you’re challenging me, Sullivan, well I must say it raises my opinion of you.” She looked round at the other four women, “but not by much, need all these people as insurance do you?”

Sullivan stopped smiling, “I don’t need them, Butcher, I just do things a little differently.”

Butcher retrieved a knife from her pocket, “OK, who’s first?”

The fight was short, but vicious, Butcher moved almost impossibly fast, slashing into the face of one woman, and in the same movement stabbing the knife into the side of another, but the odds were too great. As she moved toward Sullivan her arms were held by Taylor and another, the knife wrenched from her grasp. Butcher was strong, but each of the two holding her was almost as strong, between them she had no chance.

“Coward, Sullivan, to get your people to do your fighting for you.” Butcher continued to struggle.

Sullivan walked up, her face dark.

“You going to kill her?” Taylor asked.

Sullivan stopped, looked over toward the door at the back of the kitchen, “No,” she grinned, “we’ll let the pigs outside do that for us.” She picked up a pan from the ovens then stepped up to Butcher and kicked her in the stomach. As Butcher doubled over she brought the pan down on the back of her head. Butcher saw a sharp, bright light, then slumped unconscious.

Between then the two women dragged Butcher out of the kitchen into the small yard. Holding her firmly they waited while Sullivan quickly unlocked the gates, then with a call of, “Here screws, present for you!” she opened the gate just long enough for the other two to throw the weakly struggling Butcher outside, under the guns of the Armed Response Unit. The gate was firmly slammed and locked behind her.

I guess really that's probably the best thing that could have happened to Butcher (ie in that now Hilda can rescue her and she's more likely to remain alive, provided she hasn't been shot by the Armed Response Unit). BUT now there's no-one sensible inside with the hostages... Lesley!! This is a very high cliff!

Now if you're going to be insulting I'll stop right now! Shocked

In the cell where the four RCS mistresses were being held, the others had finally managed to get Kathie Ferrars to calm down and admit that the young inmate Mel Richards would have been unable to do anything other than join in with the others. They were then disturbed again by the sound of keys in the lock and they all turned to watch as the door opened. Outside stood three women, Ruth recognised one of them as Sullivan.

“Been a change in leadership ladies, I’m looking after things now.”

None of the teachers said anything, they just looked at each other quickly.

“Now a couple of my people have been hurt, I heard you know how to fix things?”

“We all have first aid training,” Ruth answered for them all, “nothing more though, if they are seriously hurt you should call for an ambulance.”

Sullivan walked into the cell, straight up to where Ruth Derwent sat on the bed, “Cute,” she said, “well an ambulance is not an option, just yet, so you’ll do. Follow me!”

As the four were taken out of the cell block they saw two of the other inmates being dragged along and flung into another cell. One of them was Rees, she had been clutching at a bleeding wound in her stomach.

Sullivan led the way back to the main classroom, at the front, on the raised dais used by the lecturer, lay three women. One had a blood soaked bandage on her face, while the others both appeared to have knife wounds to the side.

“Fix them!” Sullivan ordered.

Ruth looked at the three injured women then rose, “We’ll need supplies, bandages…”

“Over there,” one of their guards pointed, there were a couple of standard first aid boxes.

Ruth swallowed, “Look, these people need medical help, we can not cure them.”

Sullivan heard and returned, holding a knife to the Senior Mistress’ throat she spoke, “Learn quickly, teacher, because if one of them dies, so does one of your staff, understand?”

Ruth nodded very slightly.

Shoulder is better today - yesterday it felt as though I'd ripped all the muscle attaching arm to body - couldn't allow arm to hang normally - had to support it. Today much better - weird!

She returned to where the other three were busy checking the women’s injuries and sorting through supplies, the woman with the slashed face seemed to have lost a lot of blood but the wound, when they finally got to see it, seemed superficial. Peggy Burnett, with her experience of sports injuries, was able to reassure the others about how much head injuries could bleed and, using some Steristrips from the box, was able to affect a temporary repair. The other two were rather more serious, both of them knife wounds, one to the side, the other to the stomach. For both of these the four could only treat for shock and hope.

Although trapped up on the dais, and with three rather hard faced women acting as their guards, it was possible for the four to see what was going on in the rest of the large classroom. The furniture had all been moved back to the sides leaving the centre clear. Most of those women not involved in standing guard were gathered around the sides, waiting. Ruth, watching these preparations with some puzzlement, was quickly brought back to earth by a frantic whispering from Peggy. She moved quickly over,

“What is it, Peggy? Is one of them worse than we thought?”

“No, nothing like that,” Peggy said very quietly, pulling Ruth further back, as she did both Kathie and Jackie moved in front, seemingly at random to check their patients, but coincidentally shielding the pair of them. “Look at this, Ruth.”

Ruth looked down, Peggy had one of the first aid boxes open, she was pointing to something, it was a scalpel, with brand new blade affixed. Ruth looked at it in shock, then at the other three. She could see in all their faces the wish to fight back, she took a couple of deep breaths as both Kathie and Jackie moved closer to listen.

“OK, everyone, I know what you want, but think about it.” Ruth said quickly, “It’s only one knife, there are three guarding us.”

“Yes, but we could take them, Ruth, they all think we’re soft, not one of those three is alert, they’re more interested in what’s going on over there.”

“And if we did beat those three, Kathie?” Ruth said solemnly, “That still leaves about thirty women there.”

Peggy sighed, “She’s right,” she said, speaking to Kathie and Jackie, “We’ll have to chose our moment carefully.” She stopped abruptly as someone came up onto the dais, and quickly covered the scalpel with some bandages. They all looked up to see one of the three guards, she looked down at them,

“No talking, just look after these women.”

At Ruth’s nod the others moved, Kathie and Jackie back to keeping vigil with the two more seriously injured. Peggy placed a few more items in the first aid box and kept it close. Ruth checked the woman with the slashed face, she was starting to come round.

In the Staff Room Sullivan replaced the receiver of the telephone with some satisfaction, “That should work,” she said.

Taylor looked across at her, “You think it will be enough?”

“Sure, I told them, if we’re not given a free pardon and flight out of Australia, the teachers will die.”

“Will that be enough? Whenever there have been sieges before they’ve never negotiated.”

“Before it’s only been screws, this time we’ve got genuine innocents in here, and if they don’t come through I’ll kill them, one by one, and send them videotape of each.”

“How long?”

“Until the first deadline? An hour.” Sullivan smiled, “So, let’s have a little fun, shall we?”

Miss Shaw wasn’t certain how long ago it was since Ruth Derwent had paid her fleeting visit. She wasn’t in quite as much pain as before, but realised that it could be just her mind playing tricks. Although no one had come near her cell for some time she had been able to hear things happening outside. She’d heard the cell next to hers suddenly being slammed shut and wondered who the new prisoners were, and, a short time ago, she had heard the voices of her two staff, Mareck and Gordon, they were obviously being taken somewhere else, but Katya Mareck had spoken loudly enough to let her boss know.

Miss Shaw shifted, a little uncomfortable despite Ruth’s earlier help, then froze as the door to her cell was unlocked. Sullivan stood framed in the doorway.

“Hello screw, have you missed me?”

Wot moi? (Innocence smiley) Twisted Evil Wink

Pushing the prison officer ahead of her, Sullivan strode into the large classroom. All around the sides of the room inmates lined the walls. They were arranged in a semi-circle, watching. Sullivan propelled Miss Shaw to the centre, pushing her hard enough that the woman fell to the floor, unable to protect herself as her hands were still tied.

“Pick her up,” Sullivan ordered lazily, two other inmates, Taylor and another, stepped forward, they pulled the prison officer to her feet. Miss Shaw straightened, wincing from the pain in her side, she looked around her. The faces of the inmates stared back at her, she raised her head and stared directly at Sullivan. Sullivan returned the stare, then laughed, “Not so much fun, screw, is it? Being on the other side.”

Miss Shaw said nothing, Sullivan walked across to stand in front of her, raising her fist she swiftly punched the helpless woman in the stomach, Miss Shaw sank to the ground, retching. After about thirty seconds Sullivan turned to the other two, “Pick her up again.” She waited until the woman was standing then said menacingly, “Answer the question, Shaw.”

Miss Shaw swallowed a few times, then replied, “No, Sullivan, it’s not much fun. But I have a query, not just for you, but for all the women here.”

Sullivan shrugged, “Go ahead.”

Miss Shaw turned to look at all the women standing and watching, noting that some couldn’t meet her eyes, “All of you committed the crimes, you were found guilty, sentenced by a court of law. My job, and that of my staff, is to ensure you remain in prison, and, hopefully, learn something that will help you once you have finished your sentence. So that you never return to prison.”

“And your point, Shaw?”

Miss Shaw held herself stiffly, “When did you ever see any of my staff, or myself, treat any inmate as you are treating me now?”

There was silence after the question, then Sullivan laughed, stepping forward she grabbed hold of the other woman’s hair and twisted, “What does that matter?” she said quickly, “The point is, for once in our lives we’ve got the upper hand, we can do anything. And with six other hostages, Shaw, you’re not needed, we can play with you.”

“No,” the prison officer’s voice was strained, “If you kill me, or any of the hostages, you’ll not be able to negotiate a surrender…”

“Who the Hell wants a surrender? They’ll give us what we want.”

“They won’t.” Shaw swallowed and licked her lips, “Where’s Butcher? She was negotiating a surrender with a woman outside, it was almost complete.”

“Butcher’s gone, she scarpered first chance she got.” Sullivan’s tone was derisory, “She cared only for herself, not for anyone else. I’m the only chance the women have got.”

Shaw wrenched her hair from Sullivan’s grasp, staring directly at her she spoke quietly but firmly, “Then they have no chance. Butcher, for all her faults, cares about the rest of the women in here, you care only for yourself and your own gratification.”

Sullivan’s eyes grew stony, she snapped at her lieutenants, “Hold her!” Then, moving close she raised both fists, raining punch after punch into Miss Shaw’s unprotected head and stomach…

As she was thrown from the Block, Butcher was barely conscious, struggling weakly she was unable to stop the women from pushing her outside and vaguely heard the slam of the gate behind her. As she lay on the floor, desperately shaking her head and trying to focus she was aware, as though from far away, of voices.

“…repeat, this is the Police, keep your hands in sight, lie down on the ground, spread-eagled. This is your final warning!”

She wondered who they were talking to. Deciding to stand and attempt to get back in to the Education Block, her very weakness proved to be a blessing as her knees gave way and she fell forward, into exactly the position the Police Officer had ordered. Before she could recover an officer was there, his knee on her back, a pistol to her head, searching her for weapons. When he had finished he swiftly handcuffed her wrists behind her, then, raising her arms, forced her to stand. She was quickly frogmarched across to one of the nearby buildings. But the time on the ground had served its purpose; Butcher had regained full consciousness, she was well aware of what had happened, and she was extremely angry.

Once inside the building she was marched, in silence, to a small room and ordered to sit. The Policeman then left her there, locked the door. The room was windowless, it had a table, a few chairs, nothing else. Butcher looked round, saw that one wall had a mirror running the full width of the wall. She got up and walked over to stare at the mirror, she grinned, “Hope you’re enjoying what you see, coppers,” she said sarcastically.

In the room on the other side of the mirror the two police officers said nothing, but reported that the prisoner was well aware of the two-way mirror and its purpose. A short time later the door was unlocked and two Police Officers came in. They sat in chairs on the opposite side of the desk to Butcher, one of them spoke.

“You’re in serious trouble, Butcher. Your only chance of getting out of it is to tell us all you know.”

Butcher looked singularly unimpressed at this, “I’ve been in serious trouble since I was six years old, copper,” she said, “and you don’t have the brain power to hear all I know.”

“Don’t make this any worse for yourself, Butcher.”

“Worse? How much worse could it be?” Butcher turned away, disgusted, “Not interested in speaking to you copper, trust none of you as far as I can spit. Let me speak to Annersley.”

The next time, the two inmates charged with raising the prison officer to her feet, had to hold on to her, to stop her from sinking to the ground again. There was blood trickling from a cut above her right cheekbone and her breath was coming in short gasps.

“Ready for more, Shaw? I am.”

“Coward, you wouldn’t be this tough if she could fight back!” The words, from another part of the room, stopped Sullivan, she spun round,

“Who said that?” she demanded, her gaze moved to where the other two prison officers were held. Mareck and Gordon had been brought in earlier, ostensibly to watch proceedings, though their guards had promised that they would be the next lot of entertainment. They were both kneeling, each had a woman with a knife beside them. Sullivan looked at them, Katya Mareck was flushed and angry, her guard was holding her shoulder and resting the knife on her throat.

“Oh it’s you,” Sullivan smiled, “I thought you’d be as quiet as your friend here,” she kicked Nicola Gordon, the younger prison officer was curled up, quietly sobbing.

“I can’t stay quiet when I have to watch this, Sullivan.” Katya’s dark eyes flashed as she looked with scorn at the convict, “She was right, when did we ever treat any of you like this?” She looked round at the rest of the women, some actually looked embarrassed.

“That’s enough, Katya!” the voice was very quiet but it was still a command. Both Sullivan and Mareck looked across, Geri Shaw was staring at her colleague, “Don’t provoke her, your duty is to survive, you understand?”

Katya stared deep into her friend and senior’s eyes, she gulped and nodded faintly, then subsided.

Up on the dais the four RCS mistresses watched in horror, they were all kneeling beside the two seriously injured women, checking them frequently, attempting to minimise the effects of shock. Ruth was talking very quietly, “Not yet, everyone, we try anything now, we’ll just get ourselves killed, stay focused.”

She had hold of Kathie’s hand, Jackie and Peggy had their arms round each other. Ruth looked at them all, “Stay calm, it’s the only thing that will help, We’ve been through this before, remember Kathie?”

Kathie Ferrars looked confused, then her brow cleared, “You mean Elinor attacking Hilda?”

“Yes, the firework party, remember? We survived that, Hilda survived it, stay calm.”

The words seemed to help, all four of the women seemed to relax very slightly, Ruth hoped it would be enough. There was a slight movement to their right, Ruth looked across to see the young inmate Richards standing there, her face seemed to show she was as sickened as them.

“Miss Ferrars,” she said, her voice low to avoid alerting the three guards, “I’m sorry Miss Ferrars, this shouldn’t be happening. Butcher wouldn’t allow this.”

Kathie Ferrars looked as though she were about to make an angry retort, but a look from Ruth seemed to calm her, she looked across at the woman, “Butcher isn’t here, Mel, what about the rest of you?”

Richards stared at her for some seconds then nodded sharply before moving away.

Back in the centre of the room Sullivan laughed at Mareck then turned her attention back to Shaw. Miss Shaw raised her head to stare defiantly at Sullivan. “Thought you’d have more sense, Shaw, realised where the power now lies.”

Shaw said nothing and Sullivan laughed again, “Well, perhaps you do, staying quiet now, are we?” She paused, thinking, then grinned round at all, “…’course, you need to do more than that. Now what…oh I know!” She stepped in front of the woman, “Remember? When we’re first brought to this place? What’s the first thing you say? ‘My name is Miss Shaw, you will address me as Miss Shaw,’ well, I’ll say the same back, I’m in charge now, you’ll call me Miss Sullivan.”

There was silence; Miss Shaw said nothing, just stared at her captor, Sullivan spoke again, louder, “You hear me, Shaw?”

“I heard you,” the woman replied.

“And? What’s my name?”

Miss Shaw looked at the woman in front of her and then around at the rest of the inmates, “Your name,” she said quietly, “is Sullivan.”

Sullivan back-handed her, “Wrong answer, Shaw.”

It took some time before Butcher’s request was acted upon. The police officers tried to get her to answer questions but quickly realised that, for a prisoner already serving a life sentence, there was very little with which she could be threatened. Eventually they left her alone once more. It was some minutes later that the door was opened again and Butcher looked over to see Hilda Annersley standing there.

“Inspector Wood has told me that you asked to speak to me, Butcher?” Miss Annersley’s voice was neither welcoming nor friendly, “Why should I speak to you?”

Butcher stood up, “Not here, Annersley,” she said quickly, “they’re watching through the mirror there, somewhere else.”

Miss Annersley looked at the woman in silence for some seconds, her face impassive.

Butcher spoke again, “Please Annersley, hear me out.”

Hilda nodded, turning she spoke to the police officer beside her, after a short time agreement was reached and Butcher was marched out of the room and along the corridor. On reaching another door she was pushed inside, causing her to snap angrily at the policeman, “I can walk, kid, that badge and uniform don’t earn you respect. How you treat others does.” She watched in satisfaction as the very young policeman went slightly pink with embarrassment before leaving the room.

Despite the situation she saw the other woman smile very slightly. Then Miss Annersley turned to ask the Inspector to also leave the room. After a short and somewhat one-sided disagreement the Inspector did so. Miss Annersley turned to look at Butcher, “My Staff?”

Butcher nodded, “Last I saw, they were fine, Derwent, she got rank?”

“My Senior Mistress.”

“She’s good.”

“The prison officers?”

“Again, last I saw, they were OK, though Shaw was hurt.” Butcher paused for a moment then looked across at the other woman, “Annersley, you’ve got to get them to let me back in there.”

Miss Annersley looked across at her in some astonishment, “Why on Earth should I do that?”

“Because Sullivan will kill all of them, before she’s through.”

“Sullivan?”

“Yeah, she’s the one who planned all this, it was her idea, the siege everything.”

“Not yours?”

“Talk sense, I was only there by accident, she didn’t know that I sometimes go across.” Butcher thought for a moment, “Annersley, you remember last year? The one you warned me about? She’s it.”

Miss Annersley looked puzzled, “I warned you about?”

“Yes, the one who’s younger, wants my status? She’s only been in a month, but it was obvious from the start. Has she made any demands yet?”

The Head looked worried, “Yes, she has demanded free pardons and transport away from Australia, otherwise she will kill a hostage.” Her eyes looked haunted, “There is some discussion as to whether she means it…”

“She does,” Butcher was certain, “and it will be one of the teachers she kills. How long you got?”

Miss Annersley looked at her watch, “Forty minutes,” she paused, debating whether to continue, “the Special Services will be moving in within the next fifteen.”

“It won’t work,” Butcher said quickly, “Oh they’ll take back the place, but the hostages will all be dead, Sullivan would make sure of it. The only chance is if I go back in, because I can beat her, and I’ll do it without the others panicking and trying to kill the hostages.”

Miss Annersley looked at Butcher in silence for some seconds, “From what I hear you were thrown out by Sullivan, if she’s beaten you once, why should I believe you’ll beat her?”

“Because I was a bloody idiot and placed my trust in someone, someone I should have known was a traitor. And because the story she fed me was a good one.” Butcher went on to explain exactly how she had been tricked.

On hearing of what Butcher had expected to find Hilda went white, in a shocked voice she asked, “Would you have used them? If they had existed?”

Butcher looked across at Hilda Annersley, “I don’t know, maybe,”

“Twenty sub-machine guns? And how many people would you have killed, all the hostages? What of the Police and Officers out here? Would you have killed them too?” The disapproval in her voice was apparent.

Butcher glared at the other woman, “Dammit Annersley, don’t judge me, you spent less than a week inside, I’ve been in for more than nine years. I’m 36 years old, I’ve been in prison since I was 27, it wasn’t my first stretch either. In total I’ve spent 14 years inside, and I know I’m never going to be eligible for parole. My sentence reads ‘At Her Majesty’s Pleasure’ you think your Queen’s ever going to let me out? No, not going to happen. If I felt there was a genuine chance of escape I might have done anything. Would I have used them? I don’t know, but it’s possible.”

“Then what is the difference between you and Sullivan? Why should I recommend that they allow you to go back in?”

Butcher paced the floor for some seconds, she turned to face Miss Annersley, rolling her shoulders slightly against the handcuffs, “Because the only person Sullivan cares about, is Sullivan. Because she would, quite happily, force through a course of action that ended in half the women being killed, if it worked for her. Because if she hasn’t already, she’s going to kill all the screws and then probably move on to your teachers, just because she can. Because I’m the only one that can beat her.”

Butcher stopped for a moment, taking deep breaths, when she spoke again it was very quietly, “I’ll not lie to you Annersley, I like the power, being in charge, I think we’re very alike there. But if I felt Sullivan would do a good job, I’d step aside, but she won’t. Now I can’t say for sure what would have happened, if those guns had existed. Maybe I would have used them, I don’t know - I’m no angel. I’ve got four counts of murder against me, and in only one of them was I innocent, that's to say nothing of the ones the authorities don't know of. But I’ll say three things; I have never killed for amusement, I’ve never killed just because I could and I planned to ensure that everyone, inmates, teachers and screws, got out of this alive. If you were to ask Sullivan she’d not be able to agree with any of those three statements.”

Hilda Annersley stared into Butcher’s face for some moments before replying, “Alright, Butcher, I’ll speak to them.”

“Thanks Annersley.”

Yes, quite a few. All the ones in Kent, and a number of the others scattered around SE England.

Oy, Lesley - you are really making this realistic - almost too much so for comfort. I keep seeing glimmers of light, then the darkness crashes in again!!

Loved Hilda's approach to Butcher - and I have to admit that Butcher is very frank about everything - just thank heaven there *were* no guns in the end!

I'm afraid it's inevitable that there will be some casualties at the end of the day, but please let at least all the staff and prison staff, be OK.

And please keep the updates coming at the present rate - You have us all either ducking for cover or chewing our finger ends off! But it's wonderful, just the same!!

Thank you

I'm glad Butcher wasn't mowed down though -- hope she and Hilda together can manage something.

As Elder says, far too realistic for comfort. I want to stop reading, for fear of what will happen next, but I also want to KNOW!

How much influence, though, will Hilda have in influencing things? Butcher trusts her, but will the powers-that-be? Because if they don't............

Just caught up from page 41. Shocked

Amazed by the pizza siege coincidence with that at Risdon here in Tassie - the part I loved was the pizza shop's owner being quoted as saying he was so happy to think his pizza might have saved someone's life. Mind you his pizzas are pretty good...

Now that Pim's desk must be vacated, happy to offer my dining table/desk - have just put the extra leaves in it so nothing else fits in the room, but everybody and everything (including all the household stuff!) should just about fit underneath. No dogs/cats/small children with whom you'd be required to share, either. Although with Tasmania being much much closer to the location of the story than St Andrews, not sure how many will take up the offer! Unless it's for a better view...?

Oh yeah, by the way - great storyline Lesley! ~~~wibble~~~

Very realisitic.

Hope Hilda can persude them to let Butcher back in - though I have a sneaking feeling that Richards might not stand by passively if she can find some support...

Sorry about that - took me longer than I expected to write this bit.

Sullivan was quite merciless in her attack on the prison officer; when she had finished, and the woman was slumped, semi-conscious on the floor, she looked round, somewhat puzzled. Previously there had always been some who had been cheering her on, laughing along with her. Now there was only silence. Many of the women seemed to be looking away.

“What’s the matter with all of you? Have you forgotten who these b*tches are? For God’s sake, they deserve everything we give them.” She looked down at the back of her right hand, on one of the blows to Shaw’s head her fist had caught the chain of the necklace the prison officer wore. It had cut into her and was bleeding quite badly. She stretched out and roughly lifted Miss Shaw’s head, oblivious to the sounds of pain from the woman.

“I’m going to clean this up, Shaw, so you’ve got a few minutes, but when I come back you’ll say the words I want to hear. Understand?” She stalked off, walking toward the bathrooms.

After Sullivan had left the room there was silence, punctuated only by the short gasps of breath from the woman on her knees, after a short time Taylor, the inmate on her left, crouched down. She placed a hand on the woman’s shoulder, Miss Shaw turned her head quickly, unable to prevent a groan escaping her lips.

“For God’s sake, screw, say what she wants!” Taylor’s voice was rough and curt, “she’ll not stop, you know, she’ll keep hitting you until you do.”

“Why do you care?”

“Because this is no longer funny, because not even a screw deserves this. Tell her what she wants to hear!”

Miss Shaw took a few quick breaths, then quickly shook her head, “No,” she whispered, “I can’t do that.”

“Why the Hell not? Dammit woman, haven’t you taken enough punishment? It’s time to give in, I’ll not blame you, none of the women will blame you, for doing it.”

“But I’ll blame myself,” the words were very quiet but seemed to spread round the room like wildfire.

When Sullivan appeared again the whispering stopped, she strode across to stand in front of Shaw.

“Pick her up, then!” she said, somewhat impatiently.

The woman to Shaw’s right looked across at Taylor, who shook her head, “No, Sullivan, she’s had enough.”

Sullivan looked at her, “I decide when she’s had enough, Taylor. Pick her up!”

Taylor swallowed nervously but stood her ground, “She’s had enough, Sullivan, she’s not going to say it, whatever you do, she won’t call you ‘Miss Sullivan’ and I think you know that. You’re using it as an excuse to just keep hitting her.”

“And if I am?” Sullivan was incensed, “I’m not the only one that has enjoyed getting a bit of my own back on Shaw. You’ve managed your share too.”

Taylor nodded, “Yes, I’ll admit it, I was with you when you attacked her in the cell, and yes, I enjoyed it. Screws have never been my favourite people, kicking her a few times…yeah, it felt good.”

“So?”

“So, this is too much Sullivan, this is sick. You want to kill her go ahead, here,” she offered her own knife, “Kill her and be done with it. But not this,”

Sullivan glared at Taylor, “You challenging me, Taylor?”

Taylor shook her head, “I’m no leader,” she said, “and I know you are a better fighter. But I’m just saying this has gone far enough. I can’t take part in this anymore.” So saying she stepped back, no longer standing next to Miss Shaw. The other woman did the same.

Sullivan stared for a few seconds then acted, her knife in her hand she lunged forward, stabbing Taylor in the chest, Taylor collapsed to the ground.

“Anyone else?” Sullivan spun round, “Anyone else want to comment? No?” she turned back and reached for Miss Shaw, dragging her up to her feet and holding a knife to her throat. “Well if no one else wants to try and save the screw I’ll just continue shall I?”

There was complete silence, then a new voice spoke, “Oh I think that particular screw is worth saving.”

Sullivan to do Taylor? Don't you mean that the other way round? Wink And it wasn't me, I tried writing it another way and it wouldn't work. The character of Sullivan is such that her reaction was automatic.

Everyone turned at the sound of the voice; framed in the doorway, standing next to the unconscious body of one of Sullivan’s guards, stood Butcher. She smiled slightly,

“Surprised to see me, Sullivan?”

Sullivan had gone pale, “How can you be here? You left the Block.”

Butcher nodded, “Yes, but I’m back now.” She walked further into the room, aware that all eyes were upon her. She looked down at Taylor, “Not a very clever way to deal with your people, Sullivan,” she remarked, “tends to upset the rest, seeing just how little you care for your friends.”

Sullivan rallied a little, “At least all my people are here, and are armed. You’ve got no one. The rest of the women in here are just mice, they’d never consider challenging me.”

“They don’t have to challenge you Sullivan, I’m doing it.” Butcher took a few more steps closer.

Sullivan brought the injured Miss Shaw’s body round as a shield, still holding a knife to her throat, “You come any closer and I’ll kill her.”

Butcher locked gazes with Shaw, saw her nod her head just a fraction, she smiled, “And that will stop me how?” she asked, “as though I care if a screw lives or dies.”

“You care about this one,” Sullivan shot back, “Hell, you care about all of them, otherwise you’d have killed them all. You’ve swapped sides haven’t you? It’s why you’re back, they promised you some reward have they Butcher, something to make you sit up and dance for them?”

“What could they promise me? A free pardon? I don’t think so. No, I promised them one thing, that I would beat you. And I’m going to do it.” She stepped further into the room, bringing a knife from her pocket.

As she saw her enemy advancing Sullivan brought her knife across Miss Shaw’s throat, in preparation for the killing stroke, Shaw, only barely conscious, and unable to struggle, tensed, her head back and her eyes closed, awaiting the thrust. Then Sullivan was suddenly attacked from behind when one of the other women grabbed hold of her knife hand, forcing it away from the prison officer’s throat. As the knife moved away Miss Shaw suddenly allowed herself to become a dead weight in Sullivan’s left arm, she slumped to the floor.

Meanwhile Sullivan turned to fight her unexpected attacker, as she did the knife went flying and she saw the young Richards in front of her, with a roar she advanced, knocking Richards to the ground with a karate punch to the head. She spun round, Butcher was still advancing.

“You going to fight all of us, Butcher?”

“All of you, Sullivan, I see only you.” Butcher sounded almost amused.

Sullivan looked round quickly, the two guards with the other prison officers were being held firm, one by two of the other inmates, the other by Katya Mareck. While up on the dais the three guards were fighting the combined assault from the four school teachers. She had no one else.

Butcher picked up the knife Sullivan had dropped, she threw it across for Sullivan to catch. “This will be the last fight between us Sullivan,” she remarked softly, “understand?”

Sullivan nodded, her expression hardened, “I understand.” She moved forward to meet Butcher’s advance.

Good heavens - I thought I said all I could last night, but Lesley, you are outdoing yourself - you're certainly cranking up the tension tighter than I'd have thought possible.

Sorry, I've had a crazy day, and this is the first chance I've had to get on the board -I know most of you will already be in bed!! But at least it meant I read all today's episodes at once.

It's clear that some fatal bloodshed is probablyinevitable at this stage, but *please*, if you love us, keep it to the minimum - personally, I'm hoping against hope that Butcher emerges the victor in this particular scrap, even though I realise that whichever of the two wins, it will, in a sense be a pyrrhic triumph only.

Keep this coming, Lesley - you've got us all biting our nails!!

Apologies for how late this is - have had parents with me all day.

On the dais the four from the RCS had watched in mounting horror, sickened at the abuse Geri Shaw was having to endure, Ruth found herself getting angrier and angrier, a quick look around at her three companions showed that they were all feeling exactly the same. They watched desperately for an opening, a chance, and suddenly, when Butcher appeared they had it. None of the three women charged with guarding them was taking any notice of the four, all intent on the scene over the other side of the room. As Butcher advanced on Sullivan and she was prevented from killing Miss Shaw, one of the three turned to the others to say they should go and support Sullivan. They never managed it though.

All three were suddenly attacked from behind; the first woman falling quickly when the hard plastic first aid box met her left temple. As she fell Kathie Ferrars, who had wielded the box to such good effect, grinned and scooped up the woman’s knife. She and Ruth turned to the second woman.

The sound of Kathie knocking out the first woman had a detrimental effect on Jackie and Peggy’s attempt on the third. Alerted she spun round and easily avoided Jackie’s attempt to use the second box in a similar way. Smiling the woman advanced on Jackie, her knife held out, ready. Jackie backed away, panic written on her face,

“No, no please don’t,” she begged, her face drawn, she looked into the merciless face of the woman and swallowed sharply, “Please, I’ll do anything, stop,” she was crying now as she tripped up over the prone figure of one of the injured and fell to the floor, the woman reached her and bent to deliver the blow.

Just as the woman was about to strike there was a faint, “Now!” from behind, instantly Jackie moved, bringing round a blanket and throwing it over the woman’s head, blinding her, as she started to struggle Jackie caught hold of her knife hand while, behind her, Peggy reached across and placed the blade of the scalpel against her neck. Her command to ‘Drop the knife!’ was obeyed instantly.

Between them the two immobilised their prisoner, Peggy looked across at Jackie, “So will our girls be able to act that well then?”

Jackie, no sign now of the fear and trembling with which she had tricked the guard, grinned, “I hope so,” she said, “or I’ll know the reason why!”

The third woman was overwhelmed by an attack from two sides, causing her to back away, in doing so she fell off the edge of the dais, before she had a chance to recover Ruth had looped a noose of a bandage around her neck and drawn it tight. The woman had surrendered just before she was about to lose consciousness.

Away from the action between Butcher and Sullivan, Richards dragged herself over to the still form of the Senior Officer.

“Miss Shaw? Miss Shaw? Are you awake?”

There was a slight movement and the figure turned her head slightly to view the young woman. “I’m awake,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. Miss Shaw’s eyes were almost shut they were so swollen, she had blood running from a cut on her right cheekbone and a split lip. Richards had no doubt that these were the least of her injuries.

“I’ll help you up,” she said, raising the woman to a sitting position.

“What happened, Richards?”

“Butcher came back, Miss Shaw, she stopped Sullivan hurting you. They’re fighting now.”

Miss Shaw nodded slightly, she looked around, all the action was over the opposite side of the room, the women were all grouped round the two fighting, as she looked they all moved with the action out of the classroom and into the corridor. Shaw could see the four teachers on the dais, they had suppressed the three guards, were busy securing them, Close by was only the still body of Taylor. “How is she?” she indicated Taylor. Richards moved across to the figure,

“She’s dead, Miss Shaw.” Richards said quietly.

Geri Shaw nodded and sighed, her eyes showed real regret, then she looked straight at the other woman, “Richards, release my hands.”

Richards looked at the woman with an expression of some anguish on her face, “I-I can’t do that, Miss Shaw,” she said, shaking her head, “You’re our hostage…”

Miss Shaw took a deep breath and interrupted, “Richards… Mel… please, I cannot possibly be a threat to any of you. Release my hands.”

Richards knelt in indecision for some seconds then took action. Reaching across to beneath one of the tables, she found a discarded knife and used it to cut the wires securing the prison officer’s wrists. As she did there was an agonised groan from the woman as circulation began, brutally, to flow once more through traumatised and injured blood vessels. Miss Shaw brought her arms slowly round to her front, hissing at the additional pain.

After only a very short time the woman looked across at the young inmate, “Help me up, Richards,” she said very quietly.

Richards rose and helped the Prison Officer to stand, she was very unstable and weak. “What are you going to do?” she asked.

Miss Shaw looked across at her, “Prevent further murder being done,” she said firmly. Holding onto furniture, and staggering slightly, she made her way to the source of the noise, the fight between Butcher and Sullivan. Partway there she collapsed onto her knees, Richards caught up with her,

“Let me help,” she said, placing an arm around the woman and lifting her back to her feet.

The prison officer and inmate slowly made their way across the large classroom and out into the corridor, following the noise of battle. They passed the other two officers; Miss Mareck, as well as continuing to secure one of Sullivan’s people, was also attempting to get Miss Gordon to stop crying, to be more professional. Katya smiled slightly as Miss Shaw passed. Once in the corridor the two realised that the action had moved to another room, somewhat smaller than the first; used for therapy sessions, it normally had just a number of chairs arranged in a circle.

As the pair reached the back of the press of women and attempted to pass through, the women would turn impatiently, harsh words on their lips at the perceived ‘queue jumpers’, but these words faded instantly on seeing who was there, and a corridor was opened to allow Miss Shaw and her helper to pass through. As they reached the front of the press of women the noise of battle suddenly ceased. They looked across at the two women who, until then, had been fighting fiercely.

Both women were panting, out of breath, both women had a number of more minor cuts and slashes on them, Butcher had a long, shallow cut down her right arm. Sullivan had obviously been caught by a similar cut across her side. Neither of the cuts were serious. Sullivan was on her back, Butcher kneeling above her, holding her knife close to the other woman’s throat. She was speaking,

“Close, Sullivan, you came close, closer than anyone has come for years, I’ll have to start exercising more, but you didn’t come close enough.”

Sullivan, beaten, said nothing, her eyes bereft, waiting.

Butcher continued, “Like I said earlier, this is our last fight…”

“No!” The word was not unexpected, a number of the watching women were expecting Sullivan to say something, even Butcher was half-expecting the same. But Sullivan had said nothing, knowing herself to be beaten she anticipated no mercy from Butcher, she had remained silent. Butcher looked round. The fight had finished with her and Sullivan close to one wall of the classroom, the women were grouped around in a semi-circle, one woman was stepping from that semi-circle.

Miss Shaw had gently released herself from Richards’ helping arms, she walked forward slowly, holding onto furniture, until she also reached the wall to lean against. She spoke again, “No, Butcher, that’s enough.” She swallowed slightly, holding her left arm against her side to support her fractured ribs. “You’ve beaten her, everyone here can see that, she knows it. She will never be able to challenge you again.”

Butcher looked across, she gave a half-smile, “Shaw, you survived then? Wasn’t certain that you had,” she indicated Sullivan, “You’re right, she won’t challenge me again, I can guarantee that.”

“No,” Shaw said quickly, “There’s to be no more killing, Butcher,” the response was clear and firm.

Butcher remained still for some moments, “And exactly how are you going to stop me?” she asked with some force.

Miss Shaw shook her head, “I can’t stop you, Butcher.” She paused to take a deep breath, wincing as that action caused further pain from her ribs, “the negotiations, I’m sure you’ve spoken to Miss Annersley. I can guarantee that there will be no unfair punishments, no cell searches, decent jobs, no transfers. I’ll speak to the Authorities, at the highest level if need be, to ensure the women here are not given long sentences for their actions. You have my word on all of this, Butcher. I know you don’t trust screws, but you know I mean what I say.”

“So?”

“So, if you go ahead with this, if you kill her, you have my word that I will be the chief prosecution witness at your murder trial.”

At this Butcher looked taken-aback, “Why are you doing this? Why do you care about her? You’ve got even more reason to hate her than I have.”

Miss Shaw’s gaze met that of Butcher, “I will not condone murder in my prison, Butcher.”

Butcher laughed, “Well go ahead, what the Hell do I care, I’m already inside for life. They can’t make the sentence any worse.”

“They can,” Miss Shaw’s voice was faint, but everyone could hear the determination behind it, “I will recommend to the Judge that you be re-classified. You will be a Category A prisoner. You know what that means, Butcher. Locked up in a prison within a prison. High security at all times. Twenty-three hour lockdown, you’ll be lucky if you see the sun once a week. And you’ll have only serial killers and nutters to speak to. I’ll do it, Butcher.”

Butcher’s face darkened with anger, she rose from her position above Sullivan and stalked across to stand in front of the Senior Officer, “You’d do that? For her?”

“Not for her,” Shaw replied, “I’d do it to stop a murder. And it is murder, Butcher, make no mistake. Had you killed her during the fight I might have been prepared to count it as self-defence, but not now. Now it’s cold blooded murder, and I will see you punished for it.”

The two women, both strong willed and determined, stared into each others eyes, Butcher was the first to move, suddenly Shaw felt the prick of a knife at her throat.

“And just how will you do that, Shaw? If you are dead too?” Butcher’s tones were cold, she looked swiftly round all the women, “These are all mine, Shaw, even Richards there, they’ll say what I want. Outside will hear that Sullivan killed you, that I killed Sullivan in self-defence. No charge of murder Shaw. Well?”

Shaw was tensed back against the wall, her eyes not leaving Butcher’s, when she spoke it was very quiet, “I can’t stop you, Butcher, even if I were fit I’d not be able to fight you. If that’s what you feel you must do, go ahead. It’s the only way you can silence me.”

There was a long pause, to Shaw it felt like hours, she could see the faces of the rest of the women, knew that Butcher had spoken the truth, they would back Butcher’s version of events, even Richards. She could feel the point of the knife at her throat. Then, suddenly, Butcher was turning away, swearing.

“Can’t bloody well do it,” she said thickly, she looked across at Shaw, an expression of some outrage on her face, “She’s given you lessons hasn’t she? Either that or the pair of you have been swapping notes or something!”

Miss Shaw looked very puzzled, “She?”

“Annersley of course!” Butcher spat back, “She’s the only other one that’s ever stopped me from killing someone. I swear I should have got rid of her the first time I saw her, she’s nothing but a menace, and you’re just as bad.” She turned away then spun back, “Hell no, you’re worse, because you know the system.”

Miss Shaw stared at the angry Butcher for some seconds then, surprisingly, she began to laugh, “Annersley stopped you? I knew it, knew it. The woman that fell from the roof one Sunday, what was her name?” She paused, thinking, then continued, “Thomas, that was it. I knew she’d been beaten, knew she hadn’t fallen.” She reached out her hand to hold herself upright, to steady herself, laughing and wincing with pain at the same time.

Butcher glared at her for some seconds, not speaking, then she walked across to where Sullivan still lay, unmoving, “On your feet!” she ordered. She dragged Sullivan across to stand directly opposite the prison officer. “Look at her, Sullivan,” she said with some menace, “look at her and remember who it is that’s just saved your life.” She dragged her round so that she was glaring directly into the face of the beaten Sullivan, “You ever cross me again, regardless of how, and it’ll be the last thing you do, understand?”

Sullivan nodded fearfully.

Butcher snatched two sets of keys from Sullivan’s pockets, she beckoned over two of her people, “Take these,” she handed across a set of keys, “Lock her up. Also find out where the third set of keys are, bring them to me.”

One of the women took the keys, “She had Rees and Dale locked up,” she volunteered, “I think Taylor had the third set.”

“Well release them and find the keys.” Butcher looked round, “Secure this place everyone, I’ve got to make a call.” She looked across at Shaw, the prison officer was finding it difficult to remain upright, Butcher beckoned Richards over, “Thanks for your help earlier, kid,” she said quickly, “Now help her, would you?”

Richards nodded, “Yes Butcher.”

She helped the prison officer back into the large classroom, saw her seated in one of the more comfortable chairs near the TV. Miss Shaw lay back, her eyes closed, for some minutes. After a time she raised her head slightly to look round, Butcher’s touch was apparent immediately; there were two guards on each of the doors from the classroom. The two women being held by Katya and some other inmates had disappeared, (she thought to the cells) and the rest of the women all seemed far more calm and controlled. Looking across at Katya she saw that she was busy trying to stop Nicky Gordon from having hysterics. Miss Shaw knew she should try to help, but any attempt to raise herself from the chair merely caused her extreme pain.

She watched as Butcher returned to the room from the Staff Room, wondered if she had been speaking to Annersley. She watched her go across to confront the four RCS mistresses, the four, with their prisoners, had been left alone on the dais until now.

Butcher walked across to where the RCS Mistresses held their erstwhile guards prisoner. In silence she looked down at where the three women, all of them loyal to Sullivan, lay on the ground. The three were helpless, bandages had been used to tie their hands and feet and to silence them. Butcher smiled, “So, does Annersley run courses for her people, or just choose well?”

Kathie Ferrars was closest, she stood to face the convict, one of the guards’ knives in her hand. “That’s close enough, Butcher,” she said determinedly, “We’re not going to be prisoners again.”

Butcher looked at the knife, she was no longer holding one, having placed hers back in her pocket, she smiled. Before Kathie could do anything further she moved, with a sight-defying twist Butcher had reached forward and grabbed Kathie’s arm. Seconds later she stepped back, Kathie was supporting a sprained wrist and Butcher held the knife. She looked across at Kathie, “Better stick to teaching,” she advised, she stepped forward again and held the knife to Kathie’s side. “Stand up, all of you, drop your weapons!“

The others looked quickly toward Ruth who nodded, all three women rose, dropping the other two knives and the scalpel to the floor. Butcher smiled and looked Kathie in the eye, “Seems like you’re prisoners again,” she said with a challenge in her voice. Kathie nodded miserably.

There were a few seconds silence, then Butcher stepped back once more; Kathie and the others all watched in some trepidation as Butcher looked down at the three guards once more, then she tossed the knife back to Kathie, hilt first, Kathie caught it with some surprise.

“Thanks for your help,” Butcher said.

Just a short time later Butcher was standing looking down at Miss Shaw; the Prison Officer appeared to have reached the last of her strength, sinking into the chair, unable to move. Butcher leant down and grabbed hold of her right arm, placing it across her shoulders she pulled the woman upright, supporting her underneath her right shoulder and holding her around the waist.

Miss Shaw spoke quickly in protest, “Please, Butcher, let me rest…”

“You want to be on your feet, don’t you?” Butcher said softly in reply, “When the outer doors open and everyone outside comes in?”

The woman looked across at Butcher, a quick question on her lips, Butcher nodded in reply, “Yes, we’re surrendering now, now come on, you need medical help.”

At the RCS it had been a very strange morning. Nell Wilson had roused the Staff very early; with five members of Staff missing and another three not likely to be able to produce much in the way of a coherent lesson, she had called an emergency Staff meeting before breakfast to discuss how they were going to cope. Initial thoughts, that they would be able to manage in the same way as when the flu epidemic had struck near the beginning of the last Christmas term, were quickly dispelled when Nell pointed out that the girls would probably be finding it just as difficult to concentrate - they would have heard the news by now.

Eventually a decision was made and, at breakfast that morning, Miss Wilson rose to explain that normal lessons were cancelled, instead all Middles and Seniors would go to the main Hall for singing practice. She explained the situation thoroughly, and, those few that had not seen or heard the news suddenly discovered the reason why the Staff table looked so depleted, and why all the Staff seemed grim and upset. It was thought that the Kindergarten and Juniors would be able to continue with normal lesson, being less likely to realise the seriousness of the situation.

Part way through what would normally be Second Lesson Miss Wilson’s mobile rang, it was Hilda Annersley. After a short conversation Nell Wilson rang off, smiling. She quickly placed a call to Nancy Wilmot, she, Rosalind and Sharlie had all been ordered not to come into the School, instead they were all round at Nancy’s cottage, waiting. A quick conversation with Nancy and Nell formally gave permission for all three of them to leave the site. She then swiftly moved out to the Office Area and spoke to Miss Dene. Seconds later her voice was heard throughout the School telling them of a peaceful end to the siege!

...

Supported by Butcher, Shaw was able to walk along the corridor to the main entrance of the Education Block. Once there she watched as some of the women dismantled the barricade that had been set up, they then unlocked the front door. Butcher turned her head, “They want the hostages out first,” she said, “So come on.”

Shaw noted that, just behind her Katya Mareck was supporting Nicky Gordon, while a little further back were the four school teachers. Butcher moved forward with Shaw. They stepped outside into bright sunshine. The area in front of the Education Block, normally empty, now swarmed with life, there were Prison Officers, Police Officers, Paramedics, Fire Fighters, it was a sea of uniforms.

Butcher muttered under her breath, “Where is she?”

A voice using a megaphone spoke, “That’s far enough, Butcher, hostages first!”

Butcher didn’t know the voice, she didn’t give the order, “Need to hear from Annersley,” she called, “where is she?”

“I’m here Butcher,” Miss Annersley’s calm voice came back via the megaphone, “Now, as we discussed, release the hostages first.”

Butcher nodded, she turned to the other two prison officers, spoke to Mareck, “Get going screw, take her with you,” she indicated Nicky Gordon with some derision. Katya moved, almost dragging the distraught Nicky with her. As soon as they had reached safety Butcher turned to the RCS group, “Derwent, take your lot over,” Ruth nodded and went to move, pausing as Butcher added, “You’d probably be wise to drop those knives of yours, there are a number of panicky trigger fingers out there!”

Ruth and the others all smiled at this, obeyed the suggestion, then slowly made their way across.

“Right Shaw, your turn, come on,” Butcher made to walk forward with the prison officer but stopped when Miss Shaw shook her head.

“Not yet Butcher,” she said quickly, “It might be as well for most of your people to have surrendered first, let the authorities calm down a little as to your intentions.”

“What do you mean?”

The woman indicated with her head, “The building opposite, on the roof, what do you see?”

Butcher looked, “Snipers?”

“Yes, let’s allow them to see you are doing as expected, so they don’t give in to the wish to shoot you.”

Butcher looked over at the snipers again, then at Miss Shaw, “I can go with that,” she said.

Once most of the inmates had surrendered, been searched and secured, including those who had been injured and those locked in the cells, Butcher walked slowly across the courtyard toward where an ambulance stood. Armed police and paramedics both approached the pair and Butcher insisted first that the paramedics take Shaw from her. Only then did she formally add her own surrender to that of the rest of the inmates.

After fourteen and a half hours, the siege was over.

The four RCS mistresses were, after being checked for any injuries, quickly ushered into one of the offices in the Incident Room, a Police Sergeant asking them to wait there for de-briefing. The four, still not fully able to comprehend that their ordeal was over, sat together. Kathie walked across at one point to try the door, all four were somewhat relieved when it opened. The sat and waited. After about ten minutes the door opened again and two figures stood there, Hilda Annersley and Ben Pieper.

A gulp from Jackie Jones and she was rushing into her partner’s arms, the pair of them oblivious to anyone else. The Head looked at the other three,

“Ruth, Kathie, Peggy,” and her voice was trembling slightly, “I can’t say how good it is to see you all.” She moved closer and, as one, the three women rose to meet her. Queuing up to hug her, feel her hug them back, kiss their cheeks. When she hugged Kathie she said softly, “Nancy is on her way, will be here within the next ten minutes.” She looked over Kathie’s head at the other two, “as will Rosalind and Sharlie.”

“Are they alright?” Peggy said worriedly, “Sharlie had a bad cold, she should be in bed.”

Hilda smiled, though her eyes were full of tears, “Peggy, I don’t think anything would have stopped the three once they heard the news that the siege was over.” She looked intently at them all, “I am so proud of you,” she said, her voice warm and comforting, “I’ve heard of some of your actions, I can’t tell you how brave you all have been.”

Peggy and Kathie both went rather red at this praise, as did Jackie, now recovered slightly from her initial embrace with Ben. Only Ruth was shaking her head,

“No Hilda, not brave, please don’t say that,” her face was white, her eyes troubled, “if you knew how scared, how terrified I’ve been, I…” she stopped, looking with across at the Head with such guilt in her expression. Tears starting to slide down her face.

The others reacted immediately, all crowding around, cuddling Ruth, trying to comfort her. Nothing seemed to help, she continued to shake her head, crying that she couldn’t possibly be brave, she was a coward. Eventually Hilda gently pushed the others away, sat down beside the distraught Senior Mistress, and took her into her arms. Ruth lay, with her head nestled just below Hilda’s chin, sobbing, her chief’s arms around her. Hilda let her cry for some seconds, then,

“Ruth, listen to me,” and such was the power of Hilda’s voice that Ruth calmed slightly, “let me tell you what I think you felt.”
Ruth nodded slightly, her face buried into Hilda’s shoulder.

“You felt so scared that you couldn’t stop your hands from trembling,” Hilda began, “so terrified that, each time you spoke, you were certain that everyone could hear the way it would break and wobble. You were so frightened of what could happen that you found it difficult to think clearly, you felt nauseous most of the time, you may even have been sick..”

“Yes, all of that, how…?”

“And, on top of everything else,” Hilda continued, aware that everyone else in the room was listening as intently as Ruth, “was the almost over-powering thought that you had responsibility, not only for yourself, but for others. That others were looking to you for leadership, for guidance, for an example, so that they didn’t have to worry.”

“How did you know?” Ruth looked up, surprised that Hilda could so accurately describe exactly how she, Ruth, had felt.

Hilda smiled, “Do you think that you are the only one that has felt like that, Ruth?” she asked gently.

Ruth’s face showed her astonishment as Hilda’s words filtered through, “You? You’ve felt that?” At Hilda’s nod she shook her head, “I can’t believe it, you never show any fear, you are always calm, you…”

“…I have become very good at hiding how I feel,” finished Hilda, “and I have had to do so for a long time, I have experience.” Hilda swallowed slightly and took a breath, “Ruth, anyone that tells you, when in a life-threatening situation, that they are not afraid, is either lying, or is mentally unstable. Of course people are afraid, the others here were all afraid, I assure you.” She indicated Kathie, Jackie and Peggy, all of whom nodded in agreement.

Hilda continued, “To be brave doesn’t mean that you are not afraid. It means that, despite your fear, despite how that fear made you feel, how it almost paralysed you, you continued, you gave everyone else the calm leadership they needed. You ensured that even the most violent of your captors treated you with respect. You managed to restrain the quite natural wish for revenge until such a time that it would be successful.”

Hilda lifted Ruth’s chin, looked directly into her eyes, “Ruth, you exhibited extreme bravery, and don’t take just my word for it, Butcher herself mentioned it. Your feelings are all quite normal, and in no way do they detract from the quite remarkable bravery that you, indeed, all of you, have shown.”

It took a little time but, eventually, Hilda was able to make Ruth understand that her feelings had been perfectly normal. By that time the three from the RCS had arrived and Nancy, Rosalind and Sharlie had rushed in to greet their friends. Some time later, after the police had finished their debriefing and the four ex-hostages were all allowed to leave, Miss Annersley was asked to speak with the police herself. She was thanked by the Inspector in charge of the operation for her work in taking over the negotiations. The Inspector and Miss Annersley shook hands before he got one of his police officers to escort her out of the prison.

On her way back toward the main gates she passed Butcher. Butcher had obviously been speaking with the police and prison authorities for all this time and was now being taken to the isolation blocks. She had her hands cuffed in front of her, and the tall prison officer standing beside her also wore a cuff that was attached to her right wrist. The fact that she was so immobilised didn’t appear to have fazed her. She was talking with some animation with the prison warder - Hilda recognised him as Mr Spencer. As Miss Annersley drew level Butcher happened to glance over,

“Hey Annersley, you seen your people? They OK?”

Miss Annersley turned, “Yes Butcher, I’ve seen them, they are all on their way back to the School.”

“I owe them, they helped out there, at the end.”

“So they said, I would have expected no less of them.”

Butcher nodded, she glanced up at the prison officer beside her, “Annersley, could you explain to Mr Spencer here, that my request is genuine? That I don’t want to cause trouble or hurt anyone this time?”

“Request?”

Butcher explained. A short time later saw Miss Annersley, her escort policeman, Butcher and Mr Spencer outside the ambulance that was still on the concourse. Inside the ambulance was Miss Shaw; she had refused to be taken directly to hospital, insisting that the police and prison authorities needed to hear her statement immediately. Mrs Knight, the Prison Governor had attempted to argue but had quickly realised that they needed information sooner rather than later to ensure the aftermath of the siege was dealt with as fairly as possible.

It was only now that the ambulance was preparing to leave, although Miss Shaw had been made far more comfortable during her interviews with the police. The paramedics had given her a pain-killing injection as well as bandaging her wrists and holding ice packs to her bruised eyes. She was raised up on the stretcher to ease the strain on her ribs, she had oxygen being piped into her nose. A commotion outside and she heard the voice of Miss Annersley speaking, a short time later and the back door of the ambulance opened..

Mr Spencer had refused to allow Butcher access on her own, therefore it was both of them that got in, Butcher first, awkwardly due to her cuffed hands, then Mr Spencer. He sat down on the seat near the back, allowing Butcher a little space. She sat on the stretcher opposite.

“You OK, Shaw?” she said quickly.

The woman on the stretcher opened her eyes quickly, “What did you call me, Butcher?”

Butcher smiled slightly, her eyes met those of the prison officer, “You OK, Miss Shaw?” she said.

“That’s better!” The warmth in her eyes belied Miss Shaw’s stern tones, “I’ll be fine.”

“You will be back, won’t you?”

The woman lying on the stretcher smiled, “I’m not that easy to get rid of, Butcher.”

“Good, wouldn’t want to lose a decent screw… I mean prison officer!”

Miss Shaw’s lips curled slightly at the deliberate change of name, the paramedic spoke to Butcher, telling her she had to leave the ambulance, they were about to go to hospital, as Butcher left Miss Shaw called across, “Thanks Butcher, for what you did, for coming back.”

Butcher nodded, “You’re welcome, take care of yourself, screw.”

Thank you Lesley. I love the way neither Miss Shaw nor Butcher are any less feisty after this Wink

Of course, I hardly need to say that Hilda was as superb as ever there.
