The following morning, at a brief Staff Meeting, Nell Wilson relayed the information about Monash, the Staff were, predictably, overjoyed at the clearing of Hilda’s reputation. When the Head went on to explain that Hilda Annersley would not be resuming her post as Headmistress, however, there was a stunned silence. No one fully able to comprehend Hilda’s reasons why she had chosen not to take back her expected role.

None of them felt able to question Hilda herself about it; the Deputy Head had just quietly affirmed that it was her choice not to take back the reins, that she was settled in her new role.

Discussing it afterwards Ruth and her friends attempted to understand,

“I suppose, as Nell said, Hilda’s got a choice here,” Kathie said slowly, “I mean, she doesn’t have to take the job.”

“Bit of a blow for you though, Ruth,” Nancy observed.

Ruth looked across, “Because of the English Department?” she asked, she shook her head, “surprisingly it’s not such a blow, not as bad as March last year when Madge was still Head. Then I’d not got either the English Department not Senior Mistress.”

“But will you continue to share the English Department, Ruth?” this from Rosalind Moore, “I mean I thought you shared it purely because it was only a short term arrangement, something as a stopgap until Hilda became Head once more.”

“So did I,” Ruth confessed, “and I’m sure that was Hilda’s way of softening the blow for me, I know that, initially, Nell had just expected Hilda to take over the Department in its entirety.” She shrugged and smiled slightly, “But, you know what? If I am to lose the English Department, I find I’m not that bothered now. I know I can run it, and run it well. I’ve still got my rank, I’m still Senior Mistress,” she looked round at her friends, “and I love it here too much to consider moving elsewhere.”

The other three all smiled, then Nancy continued their discussion, “It’ll seem strange even so,” she said, “I mean, I’ve known Hilda Annersley since I was a schoolgirl of sixteen, admittedly with a ten year gap in there, but even so, all that time, she has been Head. These last few weeks have been bad enough, but everyone thought they were only a temporary measure.”

“Did Nell say when she was going to announce it to the School?” this from Kathie.

“As soon as the official statement from Monash is released,” Ros replied, “she wants Hilda’s name cleared before end of term – for all the parents if nothing else.”

So did Hilda really hear what Nell said to Madge, after all? Is she being her usual, generous self-effacing persona here = or are there other reasons? Shocked

Now of course you've got us all pondering all sorts of scenarios, Lesley, as you knew you would.

At least Ruth doesn't seem too put out.

Thanks. Lesley.

Like everyone else, I'm left wondering what's behind Hilda's decision not to re-assume her position as Head. Is there a case to be made for a Joint Headship for Nell and Hilda together, with Ruth retaining her position as Senior Mistress? Or would that be too complicated for the Real Chalet school?

Lesley Ann Green, get on here and solve the dilemma at once!

Runs off, whimpering.

That evening was the second of three performances of the musical. Miss Jones, as Drama Mistress, had enlisted a number of other Staff to help her, including Miss Derwent and Miss Ferrars as co-producers as well as the Music section. They had decided to produce the musical Grease and restricted players to only those from the Middle and Senior forms. This had disappointed the younger pupils - especially the Juniors who had not taken part in the Christmas Play either, but Miss Jones had promised that the next production would concentrate on the Junior School.

The first performance had gone well; all three performances were sold out, as well as those parents who were local, a number of the residents of Port Nepean had bought tickets, as had the Staff from the Real Hospital. Miss Wilson and Miss Annersley were attending all three performances and, on this, the second show, were able to begin to appreciate far more that the songs and singing, seeing the work that had gone into the sets and costumes as well. The evening was another great success with three standing ovations.

On the way back to their cottage the two friends discussed their newest member of Staff,

“Well I think Jackie has made a success of her first term Hilda, don’t you?”

“Definitely Nell, I would recommend that we keep her. She seems to have settled in well.”

“Agreed, I was planning on telling her so, before the end of term.” Nell paused for a short time before adding, “Of course, that’s all supposing that she wishes to stay!”

Hilda smiled. “You mean because of the riot? I don’t think that’ll be a problem, Ruth asked me yesterday whether there were any plans for restarting the classes. She‘s got a list of those still interested.”

“And Jackie’s placed her name on the list? I’m impressed.”

Hilda nodded, “Not just Jackie, all four of those involved in the riot have, Ruth told me that they all felt that, to do otherwise, would mean the ones who had planned it all, would win. Her list also had practically all the Staff on it.”

Nell looked across at her friend, “I’ve said it before, Hilda, we’ve got a wonderful group of people working for us.”

The next day, Wednesday, saw an early press release from Monash University, it completely exonerated Hilda Annersley, among others, and profusely apologised to all those who had been wrongly accused. As a retraction it couldn’t have been bettered! Hilda and Nell, along with a number of the Staff, watched it in the Staff TV room before continuing with their normal timetable.

Delighted Hilda has been cleared fully. Loved Ruth's view of the Head/Deputy situation as it affects her. Worried about the future - not sure if that means 3rd show or end of term or holidays. Still remember Lesley's query re length of holidays in OZ and flights to the UK Smile

That afternoon saw Nell informing Miss Jones that she had passed her probation term and was being offered a permanent contract. She laughed at just how surprised Jackie was at the offer! Later she had a meeting with John Coates, the Security Chief,

“John, I’ve had a chance to look through your proposals, they are very thorough,”

“Thanks Nell, after being here for more than 20 months now, I think I’ve got a handle on the post. Started to see where improvements could be made, especially in light of times when we’ve failed.”

“Failed?”

“Yes,” John looked a little embarrassed, “I can detail a number of occasions when the Security Team didn’t do a proper job, the time we thought there was an intruder during the storm last year, those hippies taking over the trees, and, far more seriously, Janet McRae kidnapping both you and Joey Maynard.”

Nell smiled, “That wasn’t your fault, John,” she said, “Janet fooled all of us.”

“Yes, but I shouldn’t have been fooled.” John replied, he paused for a moment before continuing, “I’ll level with you, Nell, when I first took on this job I thought it would be simple, just something to keep me ticking over as I’d retired from the Force. Didn’t expect it to take up so much time and brain power. Certainly didn’t expect it to be so challenging.”

“Glad we could be of service!” Nell remarked drily.

John grinned, “So, does that mean I get the funding then? So that I can introduce the reforms?”

“You’ll get some funding John,” Nell replied, “But decisions will have to be made as to what reforms are made.”

“Who makes the decisions?” John said suspiciously.

Nell smiled, “You do, John.”

“Me? But decisions like that have to come from a member of the SMT surely?”

Nell nodded, “Yes, and effective immediately the Head of Security is one.”

There was silence for a time then John said, “Are you sure?”

“Yes John, and you might like to know that Hilda had been considering it too. Each of us independently came to the same conclusion. As well as Security you will take all maintenance, gardeners and contractors. I’ll have Rosalie email you copies of the staff lists and information.”

John looked down at the floor for a time then raised his head and smiled, “Thanks Nell, and thank Hilda when you see her. I’ll not let you down.”

“I know Joh…” There was an interruption as the Intercom on Nell’s desk buzzed,

“Nell,” it was Hilda, “The Mayor is here, are you still busy? Did you want me to speak to him?”

Nell pressed the link, “No Hilda, thanks, I’ve just about finished here. Ask Rosalie to show him in.” She turned to John, “Duty calls!”

John rose, “No problem, thanks again Nell.”

After he left there was a short break, Nell Wilson was thinking deeply about recent events, ‘Had she made the right decision? What about this latest development? Maintenance?’ Her musings were cut short by a knock on the door and the entry of the Mayor.

3 great episodes today, Lesley. Thank goodness Hilda is fully exonerated - but I can't help wondering what the Mayor wants at this point!

Harking back to the last episode, it's wonderful to see how the staff all want to be involved in teaching at the prison if those classes are resumed - they are quite right in thinking that not to return would leave the rioters thinking they had triumphed! Will be interesting to see what happens next term with this. Also what security changes John Coates may implement.

I'm sure I'm reading too much into this part - but it did make me wibble a little. Would Hilda have preferred to speak to the Mayor herself, and does she now feel a little snubbed? Confused

Remebering that sharp swallow Hilda gave before she asked to remain Deputy Head I still think she heard Nell, and I am sure here she would have liked to give Nell the benefit of all her experience re the mayor.

And why is Nell suddenly letting the decisions get to her?

Thanks Lesley, you've certainly been busy today! Very Happy

The visit was only a short one, the Mayor wanted only to pass on his congratulations for the musical - he had been a guest the night before - and to also give details of how the money raised by the school in the last term was going to help people in the hospice and children’s home. Once he had left Nell returned to some of the many reports that needed to be complete before the end of term. A little later Hilda joined her and the two went through all the different items needing to be done, working in partnership as always.

The final performance of the musical Grease was a great success. All three performances had been sold out but this, the final one, had seemed to be a far more friendly affair as it was held earlier and allowed all the Juniors and Kindergarten to watch too. At the end those Mistresses responsible for the coaching, production and singing were all cheered loudly.

Thursday morning saw the normal Assembly cut to less than half its normal length; as many people would be catching early flights on the Friday it had been decided to have the end of term Assembly on the Thursday afternoon. Lessons were scheduled to finish after Lesson Six, to allow everyone time to finish packing. Promptly at three pm saw everyone filing into the Hall. As always for Final Assembly, as many of the support staff as possible joined them, lining the walls and sitting on the floor at the back.

The Head and Deputy Head swept in only a few seconds after everyone had settled. Miss Annersley took her seat behind and slightly to the right of the lectern while Miss Wilson smiled round at everyone.

“Welcome to the end of term,” she said with a grin, “It’s certainly gone fast enough! I hope you’re all looking forward to the next five weeks off?” Her grin grew wider as everyone hastened to assure her that they were! “And that you’ll come back refreshed and willing to work really hard?” There was a muffled giggle and Nell Wilson grinned again, “Ah well, we can hope.” Her face became more serious and she hushed those few still giggling. “Now, first things first, for those of you who haven’t seen a TV or heard on the radio, you should be aware that Miss Annersley is no longer under suspicion of having paid Monash University to mark her work higher than it deserves,” Nell shook her head sorrowfully, “Yes, I’m afraid it’s true, she really is that clever!”

There was a burst of laughter at this and the Deputy Head looked across, smiling, some of the Seniors in Miss Wilmot’s form started to applaud, an action that was swiftly taken up by the rest of those in the Hall. Miss Annersley rose to acknowledge the applause, a slight flush to her cheeks.

After the applause had died down the Head smiled again and continued, “Now we had the normal Form Prizes and Sports Colours to award earlier this week, but today we have some rather more special awards.”

While she was speaking Miss Annersley had moved across to the Honours Board, however not many had noticed as they were all listening to Miss Wilson.

“Just after Half Term four of the Mistresses here were involved in a terrifying ordeal, when they were caught up in a riot at the prison where they had been taking literacy classes. As you know, one person died in that riot, and a great many others could have died but for the bravery and courage of most of those taken hostage. Therefore to receive their medals of the Helena Wilson Award for bravery,” Nell Wilson’s face flushed slightly as she said the name of the award, but she continued, “I ask that the following four members of Staff come to the dais, Miss Ruth Derwent, Miss Peggy Burnett, Miss Kathie Ferrars and Miss Jackie Jones.”

As she said the names Miss Annersley reached up and removed the cover that had hidden the Bravery Award board from view, drawing the cover down so that it showed another four names added to the list. The four named, with a certain amount of embarrassment, walked forward to receive their medals to loud applause and cheers.

It was some time before the noise had died down enough for Miss Wilson to continue speaking. When she did she smiled round at everyone, “When Miss Annersley and I first had the idea for a bravery award we had no idea that so many of the Staff would end up on it! I count nine so far, you girls will have to catch up!” There was a ripple of laughter. Nell continued, “One thing that, at the time, hadn’t occurred to either of us, was that there might be an occasion when we felt that someone not of the Real Chalet School should be awarded one. But that occasion has now come. There was one other person in that riot who exhibited quite remarkable bravery and who, the four Mistresses all agree, was the reason why the riot ended peacefully.”

She turned her head to where two invited guests sat. One of them, the younger, was smiling at both Hilda and Nell, having been in their confidence as to the reason why they had been invited, Pat Francis had managed to persuade her friend to come along, that friend was now gazing at her in some horror. Nell Wilson’s voice continued,

“I’m not certain if you all recognise her,” she pointed, “But this is Miss Shaw, the Senior Officer of the Prison. She was only discharged from hospital this week and her friend has brought her here. Miss Shaw, I don’t know what other awards or rewards you will receive, but please accept this one from all of us in recognition of your courage and with our heartfelt thanks.”

There was silence for some seconds, then, slowly, Geri Shaw rose, helped by her friend, and walked across to the lectern. She took the medal from Miss Wilson’s hand then turned to face the cheers of the School.

It was some time before the cheers died down, when they did Geri Shaw very shyly thanked everyone before being helped back to her seat. Miss Annersley had removed the cover from the honour board to show a fifth name had also been added. She then walked back to the dais and took her seat. Nell Wilson was just coming to the end of the Assembly,

“I think that’s almost everything,” she said, “I know that everyone already has their schedule sorted with their Housemistresses. I wish you all a happy holiday and will say goodbye to you all tomorrow. One final piece of news, as you know, because of the problems at Monash University it was necessary for Miss Annersley to resign as Head and I was appointed in her place. I should just like to officially tender my own resignation as Headmistress, effective immediately.”

Final post time again! Rachael will confirm that I actually wrote it today so didn't leave you hanging last night out of spite! This one has broken the 100,000 barrier again - word count 104,823. Many thanks to all of you who comment - your comments give me ideas and directions. I will return to RCS again - it is not possible to contemplate otherwise! Twisted Evil

And now, what about that dilemma?

There was a stunned silence; almost as one the entire Faculty turned to look at the Deputy Head. For possibly the first time ever in her life Hilda Annersley was speechless, she stared at Miss Wilson, confusion written upon her face. Miss Wilson was well aware of the effect her bombshell had had on her friend and the rest of the Teaching Staff. The effect was greatly reduced on the students and the rest of the staff of the RCS – none of them had been aware of Miss Annersley’s earlier decision, and were therefore simply waiting for her to accept the post of Headmistress once more. When she did not immediately do so there were some puzzled glances.

Miss Wilson dismissed everyone back to work, to their common rooms or to their dormitories for packing, and watched as all filed out. Once most of the students had gone the Teaching Staff also filed out, many of them unable to resist gazing across at the still figure sat just behind and to the right of the lectern. Kathie Ferrars and Jackie Jones walked across to invite the two prison officers back to the Staff Room. Eventually the dais was almost empty, Miss Wilson, still standing beside the lectern, turned to the other person on the dais, a neutral expression on her face.

Hilda looked across at Nell, her face white, "I don’t understand, Nell, why have you resigned?"

“Why do you think, Hilda?”

“But I told you, I don’t want it,”

"I know what you said, Hilda," Nell's voice was gentle, "and for a time I even believed it. But three things convinced me otherwise; firstly, I discovered that the Intercom on my desk was faulty, it was stuck on send, I’ve had to get someone from Maintenance in to fix it. It meant you could hear anything that was said in my Study. You heard all I said to Madge that day, didn't you?"

Hilda thought for a while before nodding slightly, "Not intentionally, Nell," she began, "I’d gone to meet the environmental groups but then returned to my Study to pick up a file on the swimming pool. When I walked in I heard your voice, was about to let you know your Intercom was on, then I heard what you said."

Nell nodded, "You heard me tell Madge just how much I'd enjoyed being Head, that I would be sad to give it up? And you decided then that you’d give me the chance to continue. Self sacrificing as always, Hilda.”

Hilda Annersley shook her head, “No Nell, but I do believe that you deserved a chance, after all, in any other School you would be Head, and an excellent Head at that.”

“This isn’t any other School, Hilda, this is the Real Chalet School,” Nell smiled, “and to continue to live and work here I’d accept far more than not being Headmistress.” Her expression softened, “The happiest times of my life have been the last twenty months or so, the time since you joined the rest of us here. To allow them to continue I’d accept far more than just reverting to Deputy Head, I’d accept being just Chemistry Mistress.”

There was silence for a time then Nell continued, “So, secondly, I don’t believe your reasons for why you refused to take back the Headship, oh I did at first, you were very convincing, you were sincere, honest...until I remembered that was a gift of yours, to lie so convincingly. To fool everyone, myself included, that you meant exactly what you were saying.”

“You can’t be certain of that, Nell,” Hilda protested.

“No, but I’ve come to know a little about how you think, Hilda, about what you would think on hearing my words to Madge. You’d pretend you didn’t want the post, allow me to continue free from guilt, it’s something you would do. Haven’t I convinced you yet? Well there’s one more thing,” and here Nell reached across to hold Hilda by the shoulders, stare into her eyes, "Thirdly, and most importantly, it's where you belong, Hilda, it's your destiny. No one else can fill the role so well. Don't just take my word for it, Madge felt it too. Why do you think she resigned as Head so soon after you had recovered?"

"She said she was needed as the MD of RCS Industries..." Hilda began.

"Yes, but her initial thought was to resign at the end of the year," Nell returned, "Instead, less than four months after you've returned from sick leave, she feels happy to leave the School in your capable hands. She recognised that it is your role, Hilda, everyone does." Nell paused for a moment before continuing, "And you recognise it too, Hilda, you must do. If you are honest with both yourself and with me you will tell me who is the person best fitted to be Headmistress of the Real Chalet School. Won't you?"

There was silence for quite some time while the Deputy Head considered, she found herself to be in somewhat of a quandary, a dilemma, knowing that Nell Wilson, her closest friend had demanded an honest answer, yet also knowing what that answer would mean. In the end she straightened slightly and made her decision, "Yes Nell, I'll tell you," she said softly, "I am, I'm best fitted to the role." She paused for a moment to take a deep breath, “I’m sorry Nell…”

“No need to apologise, you idiot, you’re not telling me anything I didn’t already know,” Nell smiled at her friend.

There never was an official announcement that Miss Annersley had resumed the Headship of the Real Chalet School; speculation had been rife in the hours since the Assembly, and Miss Wilson’s shock resignation. However the entire School were made aware of the state of affairs at the evening meal. Most of the School were already seated when Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson appeared. There were a number of seats still available at the Staff table but the entire school breathed a satisfied sigh of relief when they saw Miss Annersley slip into the Head’s chair, with Miss Wilson seated to her right hand. After only a few seconds someone started to clap, applause spread rapidly throughout the room. As the Head looked round she saw that all, pupil and Staff, were joining in. She smiled in acknowledgement, a faint tinge to her normally pale cheeks.

It was perhaps fitting that the last word should go, not to Hilda Annersley or Nell Wilson, nor even to any member of Staff, but to one of the School’s youngest pupils. Allowed to join the rest of the School for supper as a treat as it was the last of the term; Robbie Elliott had not really understood why everyone was clapping his Grandma. The explanations to him didn’t really make a great deal of sense either. Once the meal was finished he ran across to greet both women, giggling as Nell Wilson swung him up onto her shoulder before tickling him. Then he moved across to Hilda and held his arms out to be picked up.

“Grandma, alla people clapped when you sat down, they’s very happy.”

Hilda picked the little boy up and cuddled him; she smiled, “Yes Robbie, they are pleased that I’m Headmistress once more,”

“I’s pleased too, Grandma,” Robbie said seriously, “…‘cos now you don’t have to work too hard.”

THE END

Lovely ending to a fab story, Lesley, and a very fitting last word from Robbie there!

Laughing

Thanks for yet another great installment, and enjoy putting your feet up and your typing fingers away for a well-earned rest - just not too long, okay?!! Wink

I really wasn't expecting that to be the final post - but it was wonderful

and Robbie is just so gorgeous

(is Kat going to come back though?)

please can I have an un yibbled copy Lesley, so that I can read it again at leisure and notice all the little things that I've missed while being so desperate to keep up

Aaah! Lovely last post, Lesley. Hilda and Nell ended up being so honest about their talents.

I can imagine Nell being tempted by the role. It's one of the strengths of the way you have portrayed them that they are so different and handle things in different ways. Nell could easily have been sidelined as Hilda's shadow but she is very much her own person and I love the way she puts her points to Hilda.

I'm feeling unusually magnanimous after such a lovely ending that I am quite happy for you to have the weekend off Wink

BTW. I love the way Robbie sees things!

Thank you Lesley, it has been a wonderful rollercoaster ride yet again!

Now, those loose ends, they are going to be tied up aren't they, in the next installment? possibly? please?

Shall look forward to seeing RCS back for the new term after you have had your break Very Happy

Thanks Lesley.

This has been as brilliant as your writing always is!

Glad to see Hilda back at the helm - it wasn't quite the same with her only being Deputy Head! A very selfless thing for Nell to do - it can't have been an easy decision, however much she loves Hilda.

Robbie is wonderful - and I can imagine Hilda's reaction his last remark!

Looking forward to RCS returning in the future.

This is the problem isn't it? You read and read to keep up and find out what happens. And the yibbling is great and fun, but then you want to re-read them all, without the yibbling, so that you can enjoy them again, and see all the little things you'd missed when you're devouring it the first time through!

Thank you Lesley.

I KNEW SHE'D HEARD!

Well done, Lesley, for letting us down gently at the end, and for setting out just how well these two know and love each other - and how well also they know themselves.

Robbie, you make sure your Grandma sticks to doing less work Wink

Only you could keep us hanging on until the last episode for the 'real' dilemma, Lesley, but I'm glad we got the 'right' resolution in the end. As Mary noted, it's good to have confirmation of how well the two understand each other.

Hope everyone has a lovely holiday and like everyone else, will look forward to the next story in due course - we know you can no more keep away from the RCS than the wind can help blowing!

Love the irony of Robbie's artless words...

Have a nice break!

I've dragged myself back to work (after a week in bed with the flu) just so I could see what Lesley was doing to her heroines. Lovely resolution.

And I'd also like an unyibbled copy at some point please.

Brilliant as always Lesley. Thank you. The relationship and understanding between H&N is wonderful to see - Nell is so unselfish and supportive, thus giving Hilda the strenght to continue

Looking forward to the next drabble - I think my nerves can stand it?

Wow! Lesley, you amaze me, I just think the way you describe Nell and Hilda's relationship is incredible. They're so close and obviously care deeply about each other yet they always maintain that public image of dignified colleagues. I hope they get to relax now, and ride off on that motorbike into the sunset together and have some fun.

Thank you, Lesley! Especially liked the Hilda/Nell exchange ... though it's a little worrisome to think that "to lie so convincingly" is one of Hilda's gifts. Laughing (not that she'd use it, except in a good cause....)
