Hilda's words took my breath away, so wonderfully were they expressed, and how kind of her to admit to all that to make Ruth feel better.

No doubt Butcher and Miss Shaw will go on respecting and needling each other.

Lovely two posts. Thank you, Lesley.

Great post Lesley - loved seeing Butcher being so concerned about a 'screw' Smile

#1203: A New Dilemma Author: Elder in OntarioLocation: Ontario, Canada PostPosted: Sun May 29, 2005 10:17 pm

I read the two debriefing posts both together - the fruits of having been out since the seige itself ended!

Both are superb. As always, in revealing so much of her own, almost always well-concealed, feeings in difficult situations, to Ruth and the others, Hilda has shown her great gift for understanding other people's needs. This was just the sort of reassurance Ruth needed at this point - and the others, too, for that matter. I'm so glad they all got out safely.

Am also glad to see that Butcher and Miss Shaw can continue to spar, even after everything that's happened - and that Miss Shaw was able to thank Butcher for coming back inside to help out at the end. It all shows the basic respect each has for the other, and which will surely continue.

Thanks Lesley!

What concerns me is that even after all that there has been no dilemma! That is still to come!

Thanks Lesley. Good for Hilda helping Ruth out like that, and I love that Butcher and Miss Shaw's relationship is still the same as ever, albeit with a little more warmth.

Loved this Lesley especially the way that Butcher and Shaw see past each other's status to value their similar strengths. And at one point (quite a while ago now) I was reading Butcher as a "dark" version of Hilda - especially in the comment about enjoyment of leadership.

Phew! (wipes brow, sighs with relief and quietly wibbles over what's going to happen next...)

I'm soo glad the seige is over. I especially liked Hilda and Ruth's discussion on fear and hiding it because of responsibility.

Wow!

Have just caught up on this since Tuesday - I decided that my nerves couldn't take any more and waited until now in the hopes that it was resolved - thankyou

Even so I while reading I was getting very tempted to revert to childhood Dr Who watching and try and read it from behind the sofa while cuddling a cushion for added safety Wink

Please please please please can we have a few nice normal gentle posts so we can all recover?

and if I have nightmares tonight, I'll have to tell Andy who's fault it was that I'm being haunted by gory violent scenes Confused

Thank you Lesley.

Really like the relationship demonstrated between Miss Shaw (who is awesome) and Butcher (who reminds me of the early Bea Smith from Prisoner).

Also really like how Hilda opened up to show Ruth she had behaved normally and really was brave.

And anybody who writes a siege like you just did has some nerve giving a whole paragraph of "good news/bad news" in someone else's drabble! poke tongue Rolling Eyes

Well, apart from Taylor - she died.

The four, Miss Annersley, Butcher, Mr Spencer and the police officer, watched as the ambulance moved slowly over to the main gates, then passed through. They resumed their interrupted journeys. Miss Annersley walked next to Butcher,

“You are being taken to solitary?” she asked.

“Yeah, no idea how long for yet, will find out after they’ve sorted out all the charges.” Butcher’s voice had a fatalistic tone, “Could be there till Christmas!”

“I doubt that.” Hilda Annersley’s voice held some amusement, she looked across at the prisoner, thinking, then, “I have a query Butcher, something that has puzzled me.”

“What?”

“Why did you feel the need to visit the Education Block anyway? You are educated, have no need for the lessons.”

There was silence for some seconds, eventually Butcher turned to the prison officer by her side, “Need some privacy for this Mr Spencer, any chance?”

The prison officer considered, his first thought was to refuse, after all Butcher was a notorious trouble-maker, was facing any number of charges because of the siege. Then he thought about the scene in the ambulance, the Senior Officer obviously felt she owed Butcher some thanks, they had a mutual respect for each other, he nodded. Leading the way into a nearby admin block he opened the door of a small office nearby and ushered both women inside. Moving across to the barred window he quickly removed the cuff from around his own wrist and clipped it round one of the bars, leaving Butcher handcuffed to the window.

“We’ll be outside when you’re done,” he said to Miss Annersley, indicating both the police officer and himself.

The door closed and Hilda looked across at Butcher, “Obviously not something you wish the authorities to hear, Butcher. I’m not sure if you should be telling me.”

“No, it’s nothing like that. Simple really, I used to come over to see you.”

“Checking to see that I upheld my part of the bargain?” Miss Annersley sounded disappointed.

Butcher shook her head, smiling, “No, I knew you’d keep your word. Last night, wasn’t sure whether you’d be there or not, so thought I’d wander across just in case.”

“Why?”

There was a long pause, as though Butcher was having to consider her reply. “How old are you Annersley?” On seeing the raised eyebrow she continued, “I’m leading somewhere with this.”

“I see, then I am 46 years old.”

Butcher nodded, “You look younger, but you sometimes act a great deal older, like you were born a hundred years ago!”

“You’d be surprised.” Miss Annersley smiled slightly, “Why did you want to know?”

“Wondered how many of those years you had been in charge. Had been a leader, thought it might be on a par with me, I’ve been in charge since I was first convicted, nine and a half years, you?”

“Longer.”

“I figured.” There was silence for a time, Hilda Annersley sensed the convict was building to something, she remained silent, patiently waiting. Eventually her patience was rewarded.

“So you been running things at that school for more than ten years? Tell me Annersley, you got friends or family that aren’t connected to the school?”

Hilda thought for a moment, then shook her head, “No, all my friends have a connection with the school.”

“No family, back in England?”

“No.” Hilda debated mentioning Cherry and Robbie, but sensed that Butcher didn’t mean them.

“Same as me then, in a way. Any friends I have are inside, are ex-cons or, well, lets just say they’ve not been caught yet.” Butcher ended with a slight smile.

“You have no family?”

Butcher shook her head, “Disowned me years ago, last I saw them was at the murder trial that put me in here.”

Hilda Annersley’s eyes showed her feelings and Butcher picked up on it, “Don’t you feel sorry for me, Annersley, I don’t want your pity. I knew what I was doing, knew what it would mean. As I said to a copper a few hours back, I’ve been in serious trouble since I was six. They say under ten you don’t know right from wrong? Load of rubbish, I knew, but did it anyway! No way I could live with all the rules and regulations, live the way you do, it’d stifle me. I don’t regret my life. In fact the only thing I regret is trusting some sneaky Pommie bitch ten years ago, but then, I’ve since realised all English women are devious.”

Hilda stifled a smile at this and spoke, “I had heard that there was doubt about your original conviction?”

“Yes, the one out of four I didn’t do, but it makes no odds, the reason I’m in here for life is because of a murder five years ago, and I did that one!” Butcher took a deep breath, twisted uncomfortably in the handcuffs, “Look, we don’t have much time, Spencer’ll be banging on the door soon, he’s eager to see me in solitary. You want to know why I came over to see you?”

Hilda nodded.

Butcher looked down at the floor, she spoke very quietly, “To talk to someone…I knew I could trust. Someone who knew how it felt to be in charge all the time, knew how lonely it could be.” She looked directly into the blue-grey eyes, “You know that, don’t you?”

“Yes,” Hilda said softly, “I know that.”

“And how do you cope? I mean you’ve done it for longer than me, how do you keep going?”

Hilda thought hard, it was unlikely that Butcher would ever again feel she could ask the question, she deserved a complete answer. “The greatest help? Apart from my Faith, of course…”

“Can’t see that helping, Annersley.”

“Perhaps not,” Hilda smiled, “Then it would have to be Nell Wilson, her support and friendship have sustained me for more years than I care to remember.”

“Wilson. She the one I met last September? She’s your lieutenant isn’t she?”

Hilda nodded.

“Then that won’t work, anyone I take on as a lieutenant is just waiting for me to fall, so they can take over.”

“Not necessarily,” Hilda replied, “if you choose for things other than just strength you may find someone.”

“Wilson is strong,” Butcher remembered a handshake.

“Yes, but it’s her loyalty and common sense that I rely upon.”

“Hmmm,” Butcher didn’t sound too convinced, “Well, maybe, I’ll think on it.”

Miss Annersley, sensing the conversation was finished, moved over to the door, then, as a thought struck her she walked back to the window, “Butcher, it’s likely to be some time before the classes begin again, if they ever do. And when they re-start I can see the security being far higher. You will not be allowed access.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right,” Butcher said slowly.

“Butcher,” Hilda paused then continued, “Do you have many visitors?”

Butcher looked across, startled, “You mean?”

“If that is what you want, Butcher, I’ll visit.”

Butcher thought for a while, “I don’t want any lectures, Annersley, no attempts to convert me.”

“Agreed, in return I don’t want to hear of any illegal events planned for the future.”

“Agreed. As soon as I’m out of solitary then, I'll send a visitor’s pass. Thanks Annersley.”

“I look forward to it, Butcher.” Miss Annersley then left the room and was taken out of the prison. Butcher was taken down to the Isolation block to begin her bout of Solitary.

Trust Hilda to see beyond the 'villain' in Butcher to the real and lonely person underneath - and it's very interesting that Butcher can also sense the 'loneliness at the top' of her own position, too. While there's evidently mutual respect between Miss Shaw and herself, there would be no opportunity for any deeper relationship there.

It's clear that she trusts Hilda implicitly, and I hope that Hilda will be allowed to visit in due course - just the uncritical contact could do so much good.

Thanks, Lesley.

When Miss Annersley finally arrived back at the Real Chalet School she could have been forgiven for thinking another riot was taking place! As she walked into the main building the noise hit her, the noise of hundreds shouting and cheering. Following the sounds she walked into the back of the main Hall to discover the entire School had already gathered. As she glanced round she saw that it wasn’t just the students, all the office Staff, all catering and domestic Staff, even a fair number of Security Staff were all in the room. Up on the dais Miss Wilson stood with a very pink looking Miss Derwent, Miss Ferrars, Miss Burnett and Miss Jones. Just behind them were Nancy Wilmot, Rosalind Moore and Sharlie Andrews, she could even see Ben Pieper, trying, unsuccessfully, to blend in with the Staff!

As she was looking at all of this, Miss Annersley heard her name being called, turning she saw Cherry running toward her,

“I was so worried,” Cherry said, having to shout to make herself heard,

Hilda frowned and pulled Cherry out of the Hall, with the doors shut the volume reduced slightly, “Why were you worried? I wasn’t in danger.”

“Well I couldn’t be sure of that,” Cherry returned, “suppose the riot had got worse?”

Hilda smiled, “I’m fine,” she said, “there were some injuries, even one fatality, but I was never in danger. Ruth and the others were, however.”

Cherry shivered, “I’ve heard, they were so brave. Hilda what about Miss Shaw? Nell said that she was hurt.”

“She was, she’s been taken to hospital,” she paused looking over at the girl, “I planned to visit her in hospital at the weekend, would you like to come along?”

“Would she want me to visit?” Cherry looked doubtful, “I mean, I’d like to see her, thank her for her help when I was inside, but maybe she wouldn’t want that.”

“I expect she would appreciate it greatly.” Hilda thought for a moment, “Cherry, I cannot see that many would take the trouble to thank the officers, most of the time their work is unappreciated.”

“OK, I’ll come along.” Cherry smiled and hugged Hilda, “Really glad you’re OK.” she said, before disappearing back into the Hall.

The Head followed her, smiling, she watched as Cherry went over to join a number of the other cleaners, saw how most of them smiled in a friendly way when Cherry reappeared, saw one who did not smile and wondered. Then her attention was drawn by a sudden drop in the noise level and she realised that Nell Wilson was speaking,

“Now, I’m sure Miss Derwent and co really appreciate your cheers and applause, and, as they didn’t have much sleep last night, they are all off for the rest of the week. I don’t expect that we’ll get very much work from any of you today, so I will just say that all lessons and Prep is cancelled for today, as a celebration.”

The School cheered even louder at that pronouncement, at least they did until a well-known voice cut across the noise.

“Miss Wilson, you exceed your authority.”

There was a deathly hush as everyone recognised the voice of the Headmistress. All heads turned to watch her figure walking into the Hall and across to the dais. As she reached the dais the Deputy Head smiled, “I didn’t know you were back on site, Miss Annersley, of course the final decision is yours.”

Miss Annersley stepped up the lectern, a twinkle in her eye, she gazed out at the waiting School, “So Nell,” she said in an undertone, “what will you promise me so that I don’t rescind your order?”

Miss Wilson looked across, shock on her face, “You wouldn’t do that, would you Hilda? I’d look pretty silly.”

“Well I don’t know, depends on what’s on offer,” the strain of the siege and the overwhelming relief appeared to have brought out a barely used mischievous side to the Head; she smiled at her partner.

Miss Wilson’s eyes narrowed, “Oh I think I can get you to agree, Miss Annersley,” she said grimly. She stepped forward and looked out at the silent School, “Everyone,” she called, “we have shown our appreciation for the bravery and courage of the four Mistresses held hostage in the prison riot. But there is one other who needs your praise, who deserves your cheers,” Miss Wilson placed her arm around Miss Annersley’s shoulders as she spoke, “Miss Annersley was also at the prison all night, she took over negotiations with those holding our Staff prisoner. It is because of her efforts that they are all with us today.”

All the Staff standing behind the two Heads saw the instant when the friendly arm draped across Miss Annersley’s shoulders suddenly tensed. Miss Annersley, realising what her friend was doing, had thought to make her escape, she was unsuccessful.

“Now I’m sure you would all like to show your appreciation in the normal manner!” continued the Deputy Head, the School all rose to their feet, clapping and cheering.

“Let me go, Nell!” Miss Annersley hissed the words at her friend, Miss Wilson grinned,

“Now Hilda, the more you struggle, the sillier you will look, the entire School will see you appearing to writhe in agony!”

Miss Annersley stopped struggling, aware that Nell was telling the truth, “Let me go!” she whispered, while her face blushed a deep red at the cheers from the School.

“Only once you’ve confirmed my order.”

“That is blackmail!”

“Yes I believe so.”

“I’ll call for help,”

Miss Wilson looked at her friend in some disbelief, “And allow all the students to see that their headmistress wasn’t able to deal with a problem on her own? I don’t think so.”

The Head looked across at her friend for some seconds before bowing to the inevitable, “Oh, very well!” she turned to the School and raised one hand, they instantly quietened, “Thank you for your cheers,” she said, “I really do not deserve them, now, I’m sure, after all that noise you are in no fit state to work today, so I will just confirm Miss Wilson’s earlier order. Lessons and Prep for the day are cancelled!”

Beneath the cover of the cheers that statement provoked Miss Annersley spoke again, “You may let me go now, Nell!”

Nell Wilson grinned, twisting slightly she hugged Miss Annersley before releasing her, “Proud of you, Hilda,” she said quietly.

Later, after all the cheering had died down, and the students and Staff had left the Hall, intent on enjoying their day off. After the Teaching Staff had finished toasting their four heroines and had finished off the bottles of wine there for the purpose. Those involved in the siege retired to try and get some sleep;

***

“Look, I’m feeling fine, I can easily cope without one night’s sleep, honestly Sharlie I’m fine,” Peggy Burnett’s voice floated up the corridor, some of the Staff looked across to see Peggy being firmly pushed in the direction of the Staff House by a very determined Sharlie Andrews.

“You are not fine, Peggy, you are going to bed, if I have to drag you there!”

“But it’s unfair on Emma, she’s arranging a tournament this afternoon, she’ll need help.”

“Hilary Graves is coming in, and anyway, regardless, you are going to bed.”

“Oh, come on Sharlie, have a heart, I don’t want to go to bed.”

“Have a heart? Have a heart? Well if that doesn’t just take the cake. Margaret Burnett you are going to bed, you’ve had a terrible experience and you need to rest. And if I hear one moan or grumble from you, you……”

It is to be noted that Miss Andrews' language deteriorated at this point, so much so that it was not possible to record anything further. She had obviously learnt a great deal during her association with Eminem.

***

“So, do you think anyone will mind if I abduct you from here, Miss Jones?”

“Why Mr Pieper, aren’t you supposed to be working?”

”Nope, Dr Venables gave me the rest of the week off, to look after my heroine.”

“Hmmmm, well I do need looking after right this minute. And it has to be someone called Ben, with red hair. I don’t think anyone will mind.”

***

“Come here, you!” the order would have sounded better had the person giving it not been lying on one half of the double bed in the main bedroom, however the person to whom the order was given immediately obeyed. Kathie Ferrars snuggled over toward Nancy, feeling her partner’s arms engulf her. She rested her head on Nancy’s chest.

“Thanks Nance, really need this at the moment.”

The pair cuddled in silence for a time, then, “So what did you do all night last night then?”

“Mostly sat waiting for the phone to ring, watched the news broadcasts.”

“You didn’t sleep either?”

“A little,” Nancy laughed, “woke up to find I was resting on Nell’s lap once or twice,”

“Oh yes?”

“Calm down, she’s not my type,”

“Should think not, if they ever open Nell’s heart they’ll find Hilda written there.”

“True.” A pause, then, “Kathie, I did want to be there, at the prison I mean, but Hilda and Nell…”

“I heard, they were probably right, it may well have meant some of the women would have been nasty….nastier. Don’t worry about it. I knew what you were feeling because I knew how I’d feel if you had been the one in there.” Kathie snuggled further into her partner’s arms then looked up mischievously, “So if Nell’s not your type, then who is?”

“Oh I don’t know, someone who’s not so strong, definitely, it’s no wonder she can hold Hilda so easily, I couldn’t move!”

“Well love, I’m not as strong as you,” Kathie said demurely, “but I bet Nell couldn’t do this.”

There were a few seconds of muffled giggles then Nancy said, “Well, I don’t think anyone else has ever tickled me there!”

“They’d better not.”

Love all the different reactions between the different couples, wonderfully portrayed.

The comment about opening Nell's heart and finding Hilda written there was spot on...very touching and yet nicely understated.

The last line...They had better not...had me giggling! Laughing

I couldn't agree more, Carolyn. Thank you, Lesley, that was great, calm and restful after all the other scenes.

Wonder how Nell and Hilda are doing?

I couldn't agree more with both Carolyn and Mary - what a great example of the calm after the storm - rather like the last movement of Beethoven's Pastoral symphony, for those who know it!

Yay that Hilda's arranged things so we don't lose sight of Butcher! Watching the development of their relationship to mutual respect and beyond has been a real plus.

Nice to see everyone having a breathing space. But -- whoops! -- I'd almost forgotten the hard time Cherry was having with some of the other staff. *looks forward to seeing Hilda & Cherry's visit to Miss Shaw*

“Sit yourself down, Ruth, you look shattered,” Rosalind Moore ushered her friend into the Senior Mistress’ own suite in the Staff House. Ruth Derwent smiled slightly then walked over to her favourite armchair. Within seconds she was curled up in its depths. “I’ll make us both a coffee, shall I?” Rosalind’s voice floated across.

“Mmmmm, yes please,” Ruth said appreciatively.

A few minutes later the two women were sipping coffee in a calm silence. Ruth looked up, “It all seems unreal,” she said quietly, “I mean, what happened just a few short hours ago. It almost seems like a dream.”

“It wasn’t though,” Ros replied, “and you acting so heroically and…”

”Oh that!” Ruth sounded very disparaging.

Rosalind looked across at her friend, Ruth had turned a pale pink once more, “Ruth,” she said gently, “Get used to hearing people say that, you were very brave, you deserve all the praise.”

“It still seems strange,” Ruth said quickly, “I just did what had to be done. Anyone would have done the same. And I certainly didn’t feel brave.”

“Perhaps, but you were the one that did it,” Ros said brusquely, “and anyway brave’s not what you feel, it’s what you do.” She paused for a moment to review her last sentence then laughed, “And I’d hate for Hilda to hear that sentence, terrible English.”

“Yes well, Hilda’s not the only English mistress, Ros,” Ruth said quickly, “and I’m tempted to make you write out the correct grammar for that sentence one hundred times!”

“You wouldn’t do that to a friend.” Rosalind’s reply was quite smug.

“Don’t count on it!”

There was a pause for some seconds, then Rosalind walked across to sit on the arm of Ruth’s armchair, “You wouldn’t be so cruel,” she said with certainty, “especially as I have some news to tell you.”

“Oh, what news?” There was silence for a time, long enough that Ruth twisted round to look at her friend, “Ros? What is it, have you bad news?”

Rosalind smiled, and it seemed to Ruth that her entire body was glowing, “No Ruth, quite the contrary, can’t you guess?”

Ruth just looked puzzled.

Rosalind smiled, “Ruth, what were you planning to do for next Christmas?”

“Next Christmas?”

“Well, probably just after, though I’m not absolutely sure of my dates,” Rosalind grinned at her friend.

“Dates? Ros what are you talking about?” Ruth looked very confused.

Rosalind Moore sighed, “Would it help if I just said I expected to be busy then?”

Ruth’s eyes widened, “You’re not? You’re pregnant? But how?”

“You want an anatomy lesson?”

“No, stupid, I mean…” Ruth stopped, grinning; leaping up out of the chair she enveloped her friend in a bear hug, “That’s wonderful, Ros, fantastic! Oh, sorry, sorry,” she pulled back slightly, eyeing her friend worriedly.

“Now you can take that look off your face, Ruth Derwent, I’m not fragile.” Rosalind was adamant, she stood and walked across to hug her friend, Ruth, after initially being concerned, returned the hug.

“Ros, that’s fabulous news,” Ruth said quickly, “have you told anyone else yet?”

“Well Kelly knows,” Rosalind replied, “We told her over Half Term.”

“What did she think?”

“Her initial response was, ‘Oh my god, that means my dad and step-mum must be doing IT’…” Rosalind grinned, “But she came round, I think she’s looking forward to having a brother or sister.”

“But no one else yet?”

“Not yet, Ruth, we want to wait until I’ve passed the twelve week cut-off, you don’t mind not telling anyone else, do you?”

“Mind? Why should I mind? I’m just over whelmed that you’ve told me.” Ruth said with feeling.

“Well we planned to soon anyway, and I think after what you went through, you deserved a little good news. There’s one other thing Ruth,” Rosalind eyed her friend quickly.

“What is it?”

“Geoff and I, we wondered if you would be Godmother.”

Ruth’s eyes shone, “You mean that, Ros?”

“Definitely.”

“Then I’d be honoured.” Ruth reached across to hug her friend again, “thank you.”

“What are you doing awake?” Nell Wilson’s question reached Hilda Annersley as she wandered back down to the kitchen for a drink.

It was a reasonable question. After the School had been dismissed for the day all the Staff had gathered in the Staff Room for an impromptu Staff Meeting and celebration. They had quickly arranged a number of activities for the students to do for the rest of the day. Activities that would mean that the Staff could cope having lost eight of their number. Against their objections all four of the ex-hostages were told to disappear. When the Head and Deputy Head returned to their Studies it was for only a very quick update before Miss Wilson marched her friend across to their cottage.

Hilda looked round and smiled, “I was thirsty, Nell,” she explained.

“And how much sleep have you had this afternoon?” Nell said sternly, she had taken the opportunity of a free afternoon to finish some work for a module of her degree and was currently sat at the kitchen table with files, papers and textbooks scattered all over. Copious notes written in her scrawling hand bore testament to her hard work over the last few hours.

“I’ve rested, Nell, I’m sure I’ll sleep this evening.”

Nell took a look at her work; decided she had earned a break, and rose, “I’m making tea, would you like one?”

Hilda nodded.

“Go into the lounge then, if you have it out here I’m not sure my textbooks will survive.”

Hilda looked affronted, “Hah, you’re the untidy one, you’re far more likely to throw your drink all over the table!” She moved into the lounge despite her protests.

A short time later Nell appeared with two large mugs of tea, she handed one to her friend and they both sat, side-by-side, sipping appreciatively. Once they had both finished the tea and sat back, Nell stretched out an arm and placed it around Hilda’s shoulders, Hilda allowed herself to be pulled over so that she leant against Nell. Nell looked down at Hilda,

“OK, why can’t you sleep?”

Hilda looked at Nell, a denial on her lips, Nell held up a hand, “I know there’s something wrong, Hilda, and I know it’s stopping you sleeping. Now we know each other too well for you to deny it, so why don’t we just save some time and you tell me?”

There was silence for some time, eventually Hilda sighed, “Oh very well.” There was a longer pause, then, “I can’t help wondering about what might have happened.”

“…‘Might have happened’? You mean last night?”

“Of course,” Hilda looked at Nell quickly, “What if I’d not been able to persuade Butcher? What if my reading of her had been wrong, and when she went back in it was to continue the siege, but now armed with knowledge of what was outside? Suppose that, because of my failures, Ruth, Kathie, Peggy and Jackie were now dead? I can’t stop thinking about it, Nell.”

Nell Wilson was silent for a time, when she spoke it was with a truly sarcastic tone to her voice, “Let me get this straight Hilda, you are keeping yourself from sleeping because you are worried about what might have happened?”

“Well, yes, I suppose so, but…”

“What is the matter with you, woman?” Nell’s tones now were tinged with impatience too, “They are all safe, your reading of the situation was spot on, as always, and you can’t sleep because you’re wondering ‘What if’?”

Hilda managed to look just a little abashed, “You think it’s a little silly?”

“Silly? It’s laughable!” Nell was aghast, “Hilda, people say I don’t have much imagination, well that’s fine, as a scientist I don’t want one, but when they say it, it’s as though I’m missing out, that I should want to be able to imagine all sorts. But keeping yourself up after a night without sleep, worrying about something that didn’t happen? How ridiculous is that?”

There was silence for a time, then Hilda said softly, “Since you put it like that, very ridiculous.”

“Hmmmph!”

The Head smiled, “Thank you Nell, you always give me back a sense of perspective.”

“Too much imagination is bad for you, Hilda,” there was something almost smug in the way Nell said this. Hilda thought for a moment.

“Tell me, Nell,” she said softly, and, had Nell not been so busy congratulating herself she would have caught the change in tone, “How does the fact that you are undoubtedly a perfect scientist, with a minimum of imagination, equate to your reading matter?”

Nell looked puzzled, “What do you mean?”

“Let’s see, The Lord of the Rings, the Belgariad series, the Xanth series, the Discworld, War of the Worlds, Star Trek, Pern, Asimov’s Foundation series, Star Wars, The Lensmen series, The…

“Alright, alright. You’ve made your point!” Nell glared at her partner, “But at least I keep my imagination for books, not for worrying myself silly. Now are you going to go to sleep?”

“Yes mother.”

Two lovely scenes today, Lesley - I just read them both together. Great news for Rosalind, and I just cracked my sides at Kelly's reaction, too!

I'm really not so surprised that Hilda was tormented with thoughts of 'what might have beens', even though everything actually turned out all right with the seige - it's another sign of her sense of responsibility for all those around her for her still be able to visualise the 'worst case' scenario. Thank goodness for Nell's logic and common sense.

Err...experience?

Thanks for all the lovely fluffy scenes Lesley

Can so identify with Hilda's worrying about what might have been. Got into a "situation" with a [insert appropriate expletive here] of a motorcyclist the other night on the way home. It was all fine apart from me being shaken, but it took me ages to get to sleep as I thought of all the possible outcomes.

That Saturday saw Miss Annersley and Cherry travelling to the hospital to visit Miss Shaw; Miss Wilson was covering for the weekend and had a fair amount of work to complete, including a report requested by the Head on the need for further Scientific Staff. She was therefore not able to take care of Robbie who accompanied his mother and Grandma feeling very important as it was the first time he had ever visited someone in hospital. They received directions from the Main Reception for the ward and, once there, were shown to a single room.

As they reached the room the door opened and a woman in her late thirties, dressed in jeans and sweatshirt appeared. She seemed vaguely familiar to both women but neither could place her. She didn’t appear to have that problem.

“Miss Annersley, and Cherry too! Geri will be pleased to see you.”

Hilda and Cherry exchanged puzzled glances, “I’m sorry, do we know you?” Hilda began.

The woman laughed, “Ah, common problem,” she said with amusement, “picture me wearing the uniform of a prison officer.”

There were a few seconds silence then, “Mrs Francis! I’m so sorry,” burst from both of them.

Mrs Francis grinned, “I love that, being able to say someone doesn’t recognise me with my clothes on! You have come to see Geri Shaw, haven’t you?”

“We have, if you think she would welcome us?”

“Definitely,” the prison officer said firmly, “and I think she might welcome saying hello to this little one too.” She indicated Robbie who was watching her with wide eyes, “Hello Robbie,”

“Hello Missus Francis, why you not have clothes on? Weren’t you cold?”

Cherry giggled and Hilda turned away to hide a smile, Mrs Francis also smiled, “Yes, I can see my reputation taking a nose-dive now!” She looked across at the other two women, “I’ve got to go, meeting the family, but go right on in, I know Geri will want to see you. I’ll see you again.” She waved goodbye and left.

Hilda walked over to the door and knocked, at the faint ‘Come in,’ she pushed open the door and all three looked inside.

Miss Shaw lay in the only bed, propped up on pillows. Her face was covered in bruising, in particular this seemed centred on the eyes, in particular the right one, with purple bruising and swelling causing the eyes to be difficult to open. There was also bruising and swelling over the right cheekbone and a splint bandage keeping her nose straight.

As she saw who the visitors were Miss Shaw smiled, “Miss Annersley, so good to see you, and Miss Elliott, thank you for coming. Please, come in, sit down,”

She raised her right arm to indicate seats and both women immediately saw that the right wrist was bandaged, a quick check and they saw a similar bandage on the left. The woman in the bed laughed very softly, seeing their glances,

“Would you like a run down of all the injuries?” she said quickly, “so far everyone else has!” At the nods from the other women she smiled and began, “Mainly it was severe and deep bruising, very painful, especially on my face, but also on my back, stomach, chest and upper arms. My nose was broken in two places; they’ve operated to straighten it, and also operated to lift a depressed cheekbone – weird name, zyg…something. I’ve to have some more x-rays because they’re not sure if the right eye socket is also fractured.

“I’ve had to have deep lacerations in both wrists stitched, where the wires cut into them, and I have three fractured ribs on the left side. I was lucky, apparently, I had no skull or jaw fractures, and no serious abdominal bleeding,” she continued, “my surgeon told me she had seen far worse when treating people who have been beaten.”

“I’m not sure I’d class it as lucky!” Cherry said with feeling, she lifted Robbie up onto her lap, “say hello to Miss Shaw, Robbie,”

The little boy looked across, “Hello Miz Shaw.”

“Hello Robbie, thank you for visiting,” Miss Shaw smiled at the little boy.

“Mummy said you woz hurt. How you hurt? Did you fall over?”

“Among other things, Robbie!”

And what masterly understatment from Miss Shaw, given the catalogue of injuries she's just recited! And yet, the doctors are right in saying she was lucky - though I'm sure, with the amount of discomfort she must be in, she might not be thinking so just at this minute!

Thanks, Lesley, that's a lovely episode.

Thank you Lesley. Agrees with Patmac - think it has all been said before. Lovely visit.

There was an interruption as a nurse came in, she checked a few things then took some observations, blood pressure, pulse and breathing rate. She then fiddled with the drip running into Miss Shaw’s left arm, “How do you feel?”

“Tired, mainly, a lot of pain, especially in the stomach,” Miss Shaw smiled over at the nurse, “Would not recommend being punched in the stomach!”

The nurse smiled slightly, then frowned, “You had an injection only forty minutes ago, hasn’t it worked?”

“Yes, it’s eased the pain in most areas, only the stomach hasn’t eased, it’s got worse.”

“Hmmm, will be back to check in fifteen minutes,” the nurse left the room.

Miss Annersley leant forward, “Do you know how long you will be in here?”

“Not sure,” the prison officer replied, “I think it partly depends on the results of the X-rays on my eye. Luckily Pat Francis has said I can convalesce with her, they wouldn’t want me on my own.”

“Haven’t you any family?”

“Yes but not locally, my family are from Darwin, most of them are still there.” Miss Shaw smiled, “they are all fruit farmers, have been for four generations, but I didn’t like bananas or mangoes, and wasn’t happy to settle there. My eldest brother has already been on the phone to remind me that fruit doesn’t normally attack you!”

“They don’t approve of your profession?” Hilda Annersley said concernedly.

“Oh, nothing like that, I think they are quite proud of me, just don’t understand why I would want something different.”

“They should be proud of you, Miss Shaw,” this from Cherry, “I heard a little of what you went through from Kathie Ferrars, she said she’d never seen anyone so brave.”

The woman in the bed flushed slightly, “Thank you,” she said quietly, “but I really had little choice in how I behaved.”

Cherry looked sceptical but said nothing more. Miss Shaw looked across at Miss Annersley,

“I didn’t have the opportunity on Thursday,” she began, “but thank you. I know you were there to save your staff, but your intervention also saved a great many other lives, including my own. I think, to end that siege with the loss of only one life was a wonderful achievement.”

Hilda shook her head, “From information I have gathered,” she said softly, “none of my efforts would have mattered, if a certain person had not, through her own example, caused some of the inmates to act against Sullivan.”

Miss Shaw bowed her head slightly, “Perhaps,” she admitted, “but it cost one of them their life,” she sounded both regretful and somewhat guilty, raising her head she and Miss Annersley locked gazes, complete understanding in both faces.

At this point Robbie caused a distraction, sliding off of Cherry’s lap he ran over to Hilda, “Grandma, want a drink, pease,”

Hilda rose, holding Robbie’s hand she turned to Cherry, “There’s a drinks machine in the corridor, I take him there. Would either of you like a drink?” The other two shook their heads, in Miss Shaw’s case very gingerly. Hilda smiled and she and Robbie left the room.

After a short pause Miss Shaw turned to Cherry, “How are you getting on?” she asked softly.

Cherry smiled, “Fine, no, more than fine,” she said, “I love my life, Robbie is settled, he goes to School and loves it. I’ve got friends who don’t judge me by what I did in the past. And Hilda and Nell…”

“You have a good relationship?” Miss Shaw’s voice was very quiet.

“The best, Robbie calls them both Grandma, they are like parents to me, I’ve never been happier.”

“I’m pleased.” Again a very quiet reply.

Cherry swallowed slightly, “I never had the chance before, Miss Shaw, but I’d like to thank you, for all your help when I was inside. I really appreciate it.”

Miss Shaw smiled slightly, “I get all the thanks I need, just seeing you embracing your new life,” she whispered, “I always…” her voice trailed off.

Cherry looked across, puzzled, the woman looked strange, despite the bruising on her face it appeared very pale and covered in sweat. Cherry reached across to touch her arm, it was cold, greatly daring she touched Miss Shaw’s face, it was also cold, and clammy, she was breathing very fast.

“Miss Shaw? Miss Shaw wake up, are you alright?”

There was no reply.

Cherry ran across to the door, looked out, “Nurse! Come quick, Miss Shaw needs help!”

Going out now - more of this tomorrow! Twisted Evil

The minute Geri mentioned the pain in her stomach that hadn't subsided despite the injection I thought "AHA! A CLIFF!" and then proceeded to watch with interest as everybody tumbled over it.

Thanks Lesley, looking forward to tomorrow!

Fair enough

Are we scoring them as they fall of the cliff, you know for style and attitude and such like?

#1322:  Author: Rachel PostPosted: Sun Jun 05, 2005 6:13 pm

I think it is only polite to do so - although Jackie abseiled with such aplomb she should get some points too.

True, very true, though I think she should loose marks for all the safety equipment, afterall, with this many cliffs she is becoming something of an expert.

Perhaps if she at least lost the hardhat!

Oh, and have we got anything to eat up here?

*pulls out the picnic hamper*

Olives for you, parma violets for me, ciabattas for both of us, mashed nana sandwiches - and if you can wait a wee while, there will be apple crumble and tinned custard.

#1351:  Author: KatarzynaLocation: North West England PostPosted: Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:04 pm

I think we should deduct points for those that make it unnecessarily dramatic, i mean, spotting it and still running of the edge just seems a little silly.

Mind you, the genuine ones, particularly if they get a good blood curdling yell in, they should get high marks.

co-ordination, well that's kind of stylistic interpretation, so down to each of us to award a mark

#1352:  Author: Rachel PostPosted: Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:04 pm

I brought the herd of cats too - feel free to wrap one rounf your neck fireliazard style!

A scream is worth twice the number of seconds the person spends falling. Bonus points if they bounce.

#1353:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:05 pm

What about cursing? I'd feel better if, as well as screaming, they were cursing my name as they went.

#1355:  Author: Rachel PostPosted: Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:06 pm

Cursing gets them points deducted.

Oooh, look, that one managed a full sumersault!!

Mind you the swallow dive she went into was a bit unnecessary....... I think i might deduct points for that.

Why do they always seem to dash straight off the edge, you would have thought be now they could see these things coming, at least enough to slow down to a gentle jogging pace

#1358:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:10 pm

What about adding a few points for cursing trilingually? All three languages must be used.

#1359:  Author: Carolyn PLocation: Lancaster, England PostPosted: Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:11 pm

I agree about cursing, a CS girl would never curse, but if the can scream trilingually a few extra points would be in order!

#1360:  Author: Rachel PostPosted: Sun Jun 05, 2005 8:12 pm

Ladies don't curse - and if they do it trilingually it suggests they wasted time in lessons looking up the naughty words so I suggest they get temporarily barred from RCS reading until they learn to fall to their doom minus any such unneccessaries as curses.

And finally! Twisted Evil Bunny back from tour of Chatham Dockyard.

The trip to the drinks machine took longer that anticipated; Robbie had immediately sat and drunk all of his apple juice, sucking large quantities through the straw and swallowing rapidly. On finishing he had placed the bottle in the bin and announced that he needed the toilet. It took a little time for Hilda to find a public toilet for him, once he’d finished and washed his hands, they walked back to the ward. As they neared Miss Shaw’s room the door opened and two theatre porters, dressed in ‘greens’ wheeled out a trolley. It wasn’t possible to see who the figure was on the trolley as it was surrounded by a number of nurses and doctors, all of whom seemed to be very tense and preoccupied.

Miss Annersley swept Robbie up into her arms and stepped back against the wall to allow the trolley to pass. Once it did she became aware of another figure standing in the doorway of Miss Shaw’s room. It was Cherry.

“What’s happened, Cherry?”

Cherry Elliott looked across, her face white, on seeing Hilda she seemed to relax slightly, she swallowed, “Miss Shaw suddenly got worse,” she said, conscious that her son was listening to her words, “I called a nurse and she immediately contacted the Surgical Registrar. They are taking her to theatres, an emergency operation.”

“Did they say what the problem was?”

“They weren’t sure, the doctor mentioned something about bleeding.”

At this point one of the nurses came up to them to enquire if they were Miss Shaw’s relatives, on being told they were not she sighed, “The difficulty is, her next of kin is down as her brother in Darwin. Because of the distance involved she has given another name, a Mrs Pat Francis, but there is no answer at the number she gave.”

“Is it a home number?” Miss Annersley asked, whilst handing Robbie across to Cherry.

“Yes, oh, would you know her work number?”

“Yes, but I know she’s not there at present, but perhaps they will have a mobile number or something.” Hilda gave details of Mrs Francis’ workplace and then moved, with Cherry, to a small waiting room.

Time seemed to drag for both women, the need to keep Robbie occupied stopped them from dwelling too much on what was happening. They had not been able to get very much in the way of information from the nurses. As they were not relatives, the nurses would only say that Miss Shaw had developed complications and was having to have further surgery. They had been there about ninety minutes when the door opened and Mrs Francis walked in,

“Work called me on my mobile, in the middle of the cinema!” she said, by way of explanation, “Luckily I could leave the girls with the other half, got here as soon as possible, what’s happened?”

The other two women filled her in with what information they had, the three settled to wait. Robbie, growing bored in the waiting room, was starting to whine and grumble so Cherry took him outside into the Hospital Grounds for a run.

In operating theatre room 4, the Senior Surgical Registrar looked across at the Anaesthetist, he had been steadily calling a drop in blood pressure for the past twenty minutes. The woman had been under for a time and, initially, seemed fairly stable. He had quickly prepared himself for surgery whilst the ODA’s and nurses prepared the patient. There was obviously something going on and all clues seemed to point to the abdomen. The surgeon had palpated the woman’s abdomen and found it to be tense, all the muscles in spasm. In addition he noticed that the bruising across the area was far more pronounced.

On opening up the abdomen he had discovered an abdominal cavity full of blood, it was not unexpected, all the signs seemed to suggest that she had bleeding from somewhere in the abdomen. Her history of the assault and more recent symptoms only confirming that. And that she had developed it two days after her admission was also not wholly unexpected. As she was re-hydrated and her blood pressure returned to normal, it was always a risk that any minor bleed would worsen.

Retracting back the abdominal muscles and calling for suction to remove the blood, the surgeon started to feel the most likely organs, stomach and liver were fine, descending aorta seemed intact, that left the main suspect, pulling aside the stomach he looked at the spleen, ah there it was, obvious rupture. Ordering another eight units of whole blood to be prepped, he reached for the spleen, a few minutes to tie off all the arteries and the spleen was removed.

The surgeon looked across at the anaesthetist again, concern in his face, with the cause of the bleeding treated, with fluids and blood going in to replace that lost, the woman should be responding, but she wasn’t. Was something else happening? What about the kidneys? Their blood supply was huge, fully one quarter of the blood volume passed through the kidneys. Maybe he should check them…

A call from the anaesthetist, blood pressure was responding, slowly returning to normal, the woman was responding well. Excellent, she should make a full recovery. He swiftly finished off inside and closed. She would be spending a few nights in ITU but she’d be fine.

I'm glad I read most of that yibble in one go!

Rachel's reaction was expected (why do I always suspect that there is a soft marshmallow interior to this persona?)

It was more than an hour later before those waiting for news were finally allowed to see Miss Shaw; she had actually been returned to the ward rather than ITU, as it was not felt that she needed ventilation, however she was going to have a specialist nurse through the night. Eventually the surgeon was able to speak to Mrs Francis and tell her that the operation had been successful and that she did not appear to have any further complications. Miss Shaw’s bed had been moved to a room far closer to the Nurses’ Station and was one of four beds in the room. Miss Annersley accompanied Mrs Francis in to see the patient.

Miss Shaw was surrounded by a number of machines, drips and drains. She had a blood transfusion going into her left arm, while an ordinary infusion of dextrose saline was attached to her right. Two drains and a catheter were also in evidence. Lying slightly propped up, she had an oxygen mask on as well as machinery constantly measuring her blood pressure, blood gases and heartbeat. As the two women moved toward her Miss Shaw turned her head slightly, although muffled due to the mask, it was still possible to hear her,

“Sorry Pat,” she said quickly, “did you get to see all of your film?”

“No I didn’t!” Pat Francis said quickly, the picture of annoyance but with a grin on her face, “and that’s the second time in less than a week that I’ve had an emergency call from work because of you.” Her actions, taking hold of her friend’s hand and bending to kiss her forehead, belied her words, showing her true feelings.

Miss Shaw smiled slowly, “Well I didn’t really have a choice either time, you know.” Her gaze switched to Hilda Annersley, “I’m afraid I’ll have to revise that list of injuries now.”

“How do you feel?”

Miss Shaw considered, “Fairly terrible, I think,” she said thoughtfully. “The surgeon told me he had to check all my insides, it certainly feels as though he spent a great deal of time there.” She paused, then, “Thank you for staying, is Miss Elliott here? I have to thank her for getting help.”

“She had to go, Robbie was getting very bored, she took him home.”

The woman in the bed nodded slightly, “Understandable, he’s only three, after all. Please tell her I’d like to see both of them again, if she wouldn’t mind.”

Mrs Francis leant forward, “Geri, I contacted Graeme, he’s catching a flight from Darwin tomorrow morning.”

Miss Shaw frowned, “But what about the farm?”

Mrs Francis smiled, “I think he felt his little sister was rather more important,” her smile widened at her friend’s obvious embarrassment.

A short time later and Miss Shaw was asleep, a pain killing injection finally starting to work. The two women slowly walked out of the hospital together.

Miss Annersley and Mrs Francis went across to a local coffee shop for a drink before heading their separate ways. Whilst sat drinking their coffee they discussed what had been happening at the prison. Mrs Francis was happy to update the Head.

“Everything is very quiet at the moment, but that’s understandable, it always is after something like this,”

“Have you seen other riots then?”

“Well, perhaps not as serious as the one Wednesday night, but yes, any prison officer with experience will have seen trouble at some time or another. This one was perhaps the most vicious that most of us had seen, even those with far more experience that I have.” Mrs Francis looked across at Miss Annersley calculatingly, “I suppose you want to know about Butcher?”

Hilda nodded, “If it’s not a breach in confidence,”

Mrs Francis shook her head, “Mrs Knight has already told us that you are to be accorded every courtesy, she feels that, without your presence, we would never have got Butcher’s co-operation.”

The Head dismissed this, saying only that she had only wanted to help.

“Nevertheless, as far as the Governor is concerned, any info you want, you get,” Pat Francis smiled, “As for Butcher, she’s in Solitary, of course, as is Sullivan. Those two were identified as the ring leaders. Sullivan is facing a murder accusation, normally this would be very difficult to prove, the women close ranks, but it was witnessed by all of the hostages so she’s certain to be convicted. She’s also facing charges of riotous behaviour, kidnapping, grievous bodily harm…oh any number of others.”

“And Butcher?”

“Some charges, assault, riotous behaviour and kidnapping, not as many as Sullivan but a significant number. I can‘t say that she seems all that bothered about them.”

“What of the rest of the women?”

Mrs Francis smiled, “Those were exactly the same words that both Butcher and Geri used when I spoke to them. As far as I’m aware the rest of the women are being charged with affray and possession of weapons, fairly mild charges and unlikely to add much to their sentences. They have yet to be seen by a judge but, so far, it seems that they will be lenient.”

Once they’d finished their drinks the two women parted, Miss Annersley returned to the School. As she entered her cottage Nell Wilson’s voice called out,

“That you, Hilda?”

Hilda Annersley entered the lounge as Nell walked across from the kitchen, concern upon her face, “Yes Nell, is something wrong?”

“I’ve been trying to call you, is your mobile not working?”

“I’ve been in hospital Nell, so it’s been switched off. Why did you need to contact me?”

“Madge called, she’s coming over, needs to see you. She said it was very urgent.”

Hilda looked puzzled, “Did she say why?”

Nell shook her head, “No, only that it was urgent, something that involved you personally, and that it couldn’t wait.”

It was less than an hour later that Madge Russell arrived; during that time Hilda Annersley took the opportunity to quickly get changed into rather more formal clothes. Nell had said that Madge wanted to see Hilda in her capacity as Headmistress so, once changed she walked across to her Study. A short time later there was a phone call to say that Mrs Russell was on her way in from the Gatehouse. Miss Annersley heard a car draw up outside and, after a few minutes, there was a knock on the door, it opened before the Head said anything and a figure peered in.

“Hilda? Are you in?”

“Madge, come in, hello, and hello Kate, I didn’t expect you too.” Hilda smiled as she welcomed Kate Mason, the RCS Industries lawyer. She waved both women to the oval table and asked if they wanted drinks, neither woman did. Miss Annersley sat down, facing the two, aware that they were both feeling extremely uncomfortable. She smiled slightly,

“Now, Nell could tell me very little,” she began, “Only that you needed to see me on a matter of some urgency. What is it Madge?”

Madge Russell bit her lip slightly and took a deep breath, “Hilda,” she said, “I had a visit from an acquaintance of mine this morning, I’ve known him for the last six months, ever since RCS Industries rescued a restaurant run by his younger brother from bankruptcy. Since becoming part of us it has thrived, with his brother remaining the manager and turning his life around.”

Hilda nodded, vaguely aware of the acquisition from Board records.

“This man is in Public Relations, quite an expert in his field, I have been considering if we needed to have someone like him on board for some time.”

“Has he joined the company?”

“No, nothing like that,” Madge said quickly, “He contacted me to give some advice. One of his clients in Monash University. Have you read about the difficulties they have been having recently?”

Hilda shrugged, “I’ve read about the audit they had last month, about irregularities that have been discovered in some of the Arts Department. In particular connected with both funding and results. As we have close links with the University I have kept up-to-date with the reports. Has more been discovered?”

Madge nodded, “Yes, in particular in the English Department. There have been a number of inconsistencies in the way the Department has been run,” she paused, then, her face rather stricken, “and at the moment there appears to be evidence that the Department have been taking sums of money in return for passing students.”

Hilda raised an eyebrow, “Are the allegations proven?”

“Not yet, but a large number of students have been identified as being suspect, with evidence of sub-standard essays. The University Authorities have instigated their own investigations, they have suspended with pay four of their Professors and lecturers, brought in an external team, one from out of State, to investigate the claims.”

I see, well thank you for letting me know, Madge,” the Head looked concerned, “I would imagine that all degree courses are currently suspended at the moment as well? That will impact upon both myself and on the English Department Staff, I’ll have to speak to Ruth…” she stopped, aware that Madge was shaking her head, “…there’s something else?”

Madge nodded, “Hilda, for those full-time students this has meant a temporary postponement of their studies, while their work is checked, but fully forty percent of the students are part time, like yourself, Ruth and Sharlie. And, me too, until I transferred over to a Business Studies degree this time last year. The problem is, the allegation that degrees and marks have been bought is largely aimed at those completing the degree part-time, after all they are the ones paying high fees for the course.”

“You mean there is a possibility that we could be investigated?”

“More than that, Hilda,” and now Madge looked really worried, “yours is one of the names that has been identified as showing evidence of having work marked more favourably. Of being given high marks because you have paid for those marks.”

Hilda Annersley’s face went blank, her eyes grey, “That is not funny, Madge,” she said flatly.

“No, I know,” Madge said quickly, “and I’m not, for one second, considering that the allegations are true, but…” she stopped, unable to continue.

Kate Mason leant forward, “Hilda, this PR fellow, he came over this morning, interrupted a meeting Madge and I were in the middle of. He has discovered that the papers have been leaked this information, that all those names being investigated will be in print tomorrow morning. He came to warn Madge.”

“Warn you?” Hilda asked.

Madge nodded, her dark eyes full of pain, “Yes, because the one thing that a School cannot cope with is scandal of this type. Can’t you just see it? Headmistress of a prestigious boarding school one of those currently being investigated for alleged cheating?”

“Even though the allegations are completely false? And any investigation will prove that?” Hilda’s voice was very quiet.

Madge nodded slightly, “Even though,” she said, her own voice just as quiet, “Until the allegations are disproved…”

“Are you suspending me, Madge?” and now Hilda’s voice held anger.

Madge shook her head, “No, not that, but until the allegations are shown to be false, I cannot, the School cannot have you as its Head. I’m asking that on a temporary basis, you resign the Headship, allow Nell Wilson to take over.”

Wow..and how topical, given that the Sydney Morning Herald has been full of accounts of unis that apparently favour overseas students (those paying higher fees) whose English is apparently not up to the requirements but have still been allowed in.... Must admit that as a tutor, I did sometimes wonder how some people were there, but was in too lowly a position on the feeding chain to find out - and yes, I failed 'em sometimes. Would never have dared fail Miss A mind you! Trembling at the thought of her in a tutorial! Laughing Laughing

Can see huge dilemmas for everyone here!

There was silence for some time, then, “I see,” Miss Annersley rose and walked across to stare out of the window, her back to the other two women. “You feel that this is the only way to protect the School?”

Madge nodded, “Yes Hilda, I’m so sorry but it is. I know the accusations are unfounded, I know there is more chance that I could walk on water, than you would even dream of doing something like this.” She swallowed then continued, “But none of that matters as far as the popular press are concerned. All they will see is that someone being investigated for dishonesty has been left in charge of the School.”

Another silence, then, “How long?”

“Before the investigation is complete?” This from Kate, “They’re not sure, could be six months or more.”

The silence continued for some minutes, then Hilda turned to face the other two, “Then I suppose I’d better call Nell over here,” she said quickly, “I’ll need to hand over to her, won’t I?”

“This is a joke, isn’t it?” Nell Wilson didn’t sound as though she thought it very funny, “I can’t believe you’re serious about this, Madge.”

“I explained, Nell, this is to preserve the name of the RCS…”

“Preserve the name? By unfairly treating the one person above all others responsible for half your pupils and Staff being here at all? Come on Madge, you know these accusations are false…”

“Yes, but that doesn’t matter, Nell,” Madge shot back, “As I said to Hilda, all the tabloids will see is that someone accused of cheating had been left in charge of the School, it will be pilloried. We cannot afford that kind of damaging publicity, no business can. Now RCS Industries will support Hilda all the way through this, but we’ve also got to be seen to be doing the right thing here at the School.”

Nell sat and thought for a time, she glanced across at Hilda, she had not said a word since first informing Nell of the reason for her summons, “Hilda?”

Miss Annersley sighed, “I don’t like it Nell, of course I don’t, but, unfortunately I can see Madge’s point. This is the Real World, things are not always pleasant or fair.”

“But this is worse than when you had to suspend me last year, Hilda,” Nell replied angrily, “At least then I wasn’t sure whether some action of mine might have been responsible, but this?”

“Well I’m not being suspended, Nell, I will continue to work.” Hilda replied, “All that is happening is that I am stepping down one post, and you are taking over.”

“Yes and, with the amount you two always work together,” Kate put in, “It’s hardly going to change things, is it?”

Both Hilda and Nell looked across, Hilda was first to speak, “It might, Kate,” she said softly, “previously, whenever Nell has ‘stood in’ for me it has been exactly that, she was covering the role, I still had the authority. But this is different.”

Both Kate and Madge looked slightly puzzled, “Why is it different?”

“Because,” Nell said very quietly, as though the same thing had only just occurred to her, “I will be Head in my own right, I will have the responsibility, and I will insist on the same terms that Hilda has, Madge, autonomy. I will be Head and have the authority, even over the new Deputy Head.”

Madge looked across at Hilda, she nodded gravely, her eyes grey.

This is compelling Lesley - can't wait for more.

Does this mean we've got six months worth of RCS to look forward to then?

But it may all be nicely resolved by the time you're back (where's a flying pig smilie Wink )

Lesley dear, this is something I've been meaning to mention for a while - please can we not have much more in the way of gory medical scenes (in this RCS at least) as it really puts me off my Baileys and I have to read the posts with my eyes shut (bit like watching Dr Who as a kid Very Happy )

However I know they're really essential to the plot, so I'm not complaining too much Very Happy

I have utterly no idea as to what is going to happen now, apart from the fact that I probably won't like it

Madge appeared somewhat shocked, “You’d really want it to be that official, Nell? After all you are friends.”

“It’s precisely because we are friends,” Nell replied quickly, “and far more than just friends, that it needs to be official, Madge. If I’m being made Head it will be with all responsibility and privilege attached. I don’t want this, but if it’s got to be done it will be done properly.”

“You agree to this, Hilda?” Madge turned to her.

Hilda nodded, “Yes Madge, I would insist on the same,” she paused for a moment, remembering, “I did insist on the same, when Therese Lepattre first fell ill. For that term and a half, even though I retained the title of Senior Mistress, I had all the rank and privilege of Headmistress, I had the authority.”

Madge considered, “Well, in that case I can do no less,” she turned to face Nell Wilson, “Nell, as of now, as Hilda has resigned, you are Headmistress. The length of time you remain in post is fluid, but, while you hold the post you have complete authority over the Real Chalet School. You are answerable only to the RCS Industries Board for your conduct, and then only in specific circumstances.”

Nell nodded slowly and it seemed as though, for an instant, her shoulders were carrying a heavy weight upon them. She turned to her friend, “Hilda,” she said softly, “I can’t do this unless you are my Deputy.”

Hilda Annersley had gone pale listening to Madge’s words, when Nell spoke, however she seemed to relax very slightly. She smiled, “Of course, Nell,” she said.

After a short time Madge and Kate left, realising that the other two women needed some time to adjust. Hilda and Nell looked at each other; Hilda was the first to break the silence,

“We ought to swap our Studies over,” she said, “this is known by all as the Head’s Study, it should be yours.

Nell nodded, “Yes, that would be sensible, also our computers, the personal stuff anyway, we’ll need to download that, swap to the other machine.”

“I’ll show you the codes for this one, Nell, I already know yours.”

Nell smiled her agreement, then walked across to stand beside her friend, she reached an arm around her shoulders, “Hey, come on,” she said gruffly, “it won’t be so bad, you know.”

Hilda half smiled, she took a breath, “We’ll have to inform the School,” she said.

“Yes, and the Staff, of course, them first in fact, especially the Senior Staff. I’ll speak to them tomorrow.”

“Not tomorrow Nell, Ruth needs a little more time to recover from the siege,” Hilda said automatically, she then stopped, flushed slightly and swallowed. “I mean, I would recommend not saying anything tomorrow, Nell.”

Nell caught the change from an order to a recommendation, she nodded, “Noted, first thing on Monday morning, then.”

The two women spent some time in the Studies, first transferring over all personal belongings, this took quite a while as both of them had any number of books and papers that needed to be swapped over. Then ensuring that any personal information was downloaded from their computers to be loaded onto the new one. Hilda also gave Nell all the passwords for the Head’s computer and showed her how all the files were stored. She was already aware of all the passwords for the Deputy Head’s computer, having fulfilled the role when Madge Russell had been Head.

By the time they had finished it was starting to get dark; The two had made no plans for the evening as Nell was on duty and had expected to be working late. Cherry and Robbie were spending the night staying at the flat shared by Alison, Louise and Carol, while it was unlikely that either Ruth or Kathie would feel up to visitors. Rather than cook, they ordered a Chinese takeaway, neither feeling ready to face the students by going to the Dining Room. The rest of the evening was spent quietly, the Senior Security Officer and Housemistress reporting to Nell as the one covering for the weekend.

It was noticed, however, that Hilda Annersley was very quiet, even for her. Nell attempted to cheer her up,

“It’ll be fine, Hilda, honestly,” she said, sitting next to her friend on the sofa and placing an arm around her shoulders, “It’ll only be for a short time, at most six months, then I can pass the load back to you. You can look on it as a holiday, if you like!” She smiled.

Hilda leant against her friend, “I know Nell,” she said quietly, after some thought, “and it’s not as though I don’t trust you to run things, of course I do. It’s just rather a shock, that’s all. Especially as it’s because I am being accused of cheating.”

“Yes, well that’s complete rubbish anyway,” Nell returned forcefully, “they just don’t appreciate how good a student they have in you. That’s probably why they’re suspicious, you know, can’t understand why you’re getting such high marks.”

Hilda smiled tiredly, “Well if that is the criterion they are using, then you should beware, Nell, aren’t your marks in Chemistry as high?”

Nell considered, “Probably,” she conceded, “or almost, anyway, but then, neither of us would have been able to face the rest of the Staff had they not been!” Nell grinned at her friend who found herself responding slightly.

The two sat watching TV for a while in companionable silence, when the film had finished Nell rose to switch off the TV and tidy up while Hilda put the kettle on for a drink. As they were sipping their cocoa Nell spoke again,

“I’ll go ahead and start looking for another Chemistry teacher,” she said, “it will be even more necessary now as I’ll not be able to teach as many classes.”

“Will that be a problem for the students?”

“I don’t think so, not short term, anyway, Vida and Lesley have some Chemistry background, as does Rosalind, I’m sure some of the others have too, I’ll speak with Rosalie on Monday, sort out changes in the timetable. I’ll also schedule in some time to pass over the Department to Vida, luckily she is very competent and won’t have any problems. That reminds me, Hilda, you’ll be taking on the English Department again, won’t you? You’ll have to speak with Ruth.”

Hilda looked troubled, “It’s only for a short time Nell, do you think it necessary?”

Nell frowned slightly, “It may be for a full six months, Hilda, and as Deputy Head you’ve got to Head your Department.”

Miss Annersley said no more, merely nodding slightly; the following day, a Sunday was spent quietly. The two women finished swapping the Studies and the Head managed to quickly go through all the outstanding issues, Hilda sitting beside her, talking her through those things that needed to be done as a matter of priority.

It was the next day, the Monday, that the rest of the School were informed of the dramatic change. First thing, before breakfast, all Department Heads were contacted and told of a meeting scheduled for directly after breakfast; Vida Armitage was asked to attend as well. In addition Miss Wilson contacted Miss Derwent asking that the Senior Mistress take breakfast as neither the Head nor Deputy Head felt that it would be a good idea for the School to be informed prior to eating.

During the meeting with the Department Heads Miss Annersley spoke only a few short words at the beginning. Describing the events on Saturday afternoon and the articles in a number of the Sunday papers, she then went on to explain the temporary solution.

“So, effective immediately, I have resigned as Headmistress and Nell Wilson has taken my place.”

There was a stunned silence, then Ruth Derwent spoke, “Does that mean you are Deputy, Hilda?”

“It does.” The reply was greeted with sighs of relief around the table.

Nell cleared her throat, “Now, obviously, this is just a temporary measure, until the University finish their investigations. But as it may take a while, we’ll need to re-arrange some things. Firstly then, Vida, reason you’re here, is because you’ll be taking on the Science Department, we’ll be meeting later to arrange matters and I’m hoping we’re going to be able to appoint another Science teacher with Chemistry as their subject for next term, for this though, we’ll have to cope.”

Vida Armitage nodded, her face determined as she realised that she was being given a big responsibility.

“Now, I’ll stand up at Assembly this morning to inform the School,” Nell continued, “and get Rosalie to sort out time for a full Staff meeting early this week, though obviously, before that, I’m relying on all of you to insure that your Staff are kept informed.”

There was a murmur of agreement around the room, then, somewhat subdued, everyone rose to leave. As they filed out all of the Staff smiled sympathetically at Miss Annersley, when everyone else had gone she and Miss Wilson turned to the one person remaining, the Senior Mistress, Miss Derwent. She had said nothing during the meeting, but now sat, obviously wanting to speak. She looked across at the Head.

“You’ve passed on the Science Department to Vida,” she began, “because, obviously, the Head does not run a department.”

Nell Wilson nodded.

“So you must also mean for Hilda to run a department then? Mine?”

Nell sighed slightly, “I’m sorry Ruth, but this could be for six months, maybe more. The Deputy Head always has her own Department.”

“Hilda?”

Miss Annersley looked across at Ruth, “I’m sorry Ruth, I can understand Nell’s reasoning. While I would be willing not to force you to give it up…”

“No, Hilda,” Miss Wilson said quickly, “You’ve already had to give up too much here, I’ll not agree to you not having the English Department.” She looked at the other two women closely for some seconds, then shook her head, “if you can come up with a better solution, let me know.”

The next few days seemed to pass very quickly, the news was delivered to the School at Assembly that Monday morning. It was received in almost total silence, none of the students able to believe that Miss Annersley had been forced to resign, not understanding the reasoning. The next few days were difficult for all, everything seemed geared to continually reminding the Deputy Head of her drop in status, from opening letters, answering the telephone, even answering queries and questions from members of Staff. In fact, with each reminder of the fact that she was no longer Head, Hilda Annersley felt as though someone were trying to stab her. She became far more withdrawn and even quieter than normal, especially as, during any meetings, she felt that to act otherwise, would hinder Nell’s leadership.

Outside of the School was difficult too. Hilda was surprised to discover how often her normal mode of speech with her closest friend and partner consisted of her giving orders, of automatically taking the lead in any decision. Although their relationship was a true partnership, it proved very difficult for Hilda to adjust.

On the Wednesday evening, after finishing at the School, Miss Wilson had been contacted by John Coates about a Security problem and travelled down to his office to discuss it. Instead of staying inside, Miss Annersley decided to go for a walk, needing to get away on her own. She walked down to the nearby beach, not really able to see the waves, but drawing some strength from the noise of them crashing onto the beach.

A short time later there were the sounds of footsteps behind her and a voice, “Hilda? What are you doing here?”

Hilda turned her head; standing a little behind her was Ruth Derwent, she smiled, “Hello Ruth,” she said, “I could ask the same question of you.”

Ruth walked over and sat next to the other woman, “I’m out for a walk,” she explained, “I normally go for a walk in the evening, can’t manage it in the mornings, like my sleep too much!”

Hilda smiled slightly, “Do you normally walk alone?”

“Not always, Ros sometimes comes along, but she’s chatting to Geoff, arranging things for the weekend. Now what of you? It’s unusual to see you out in the evening, you’re normally still working, or if you’ve stopped it’s only because Nell has bullied you into sto…” Ruth stopped, catching sight of the change in the older woman’s expression, “Ah, that’s it, you needed to get away. To think on things.”

Hilda sighed, “Am I that obvious?”

Ruth shook her head, “No, Hilda, not obvious at all, but considering what’s happened it’s not surprising.” She paused for a time before adding gently, “Did you want to talk about it?”

Hilda’s head jerked round in surprise and Ruth continued quickly, “You know I’ll be discreet, Hilda, and it does help sometimes, to put into words how you’re feeling,” she paused, and then added, “and I don’t think you want to tell your current feelings to the person in whom you would normally confide.”

Hilda’s face relaxed into a slight grin, “Perfect English Ruth, I’m very impressed.”

Ruth also grinned, “Well of course, considering our shared profession, I could do no less. Just don’t expect it all the time.” Her face grew more serious, “Hilda?”

Hilda Annersley sighed slightly then nodded, “You are correct, Ruth, I cannot speak of this to Nell,” she turned to look at the other woman, clearly considering how to put her feelings into words. “I cannot believe how difficult I’m finding all of this, Ruth, how hard it is, every time I hear Nell addressed as Headmistress.”

“Why are you surprised? I don’t think anyone else would be.”

“Because it’s Nell, because we’ve worked as a team for so long that it shouldn’t matter…but it does matter, I am really finding this really hard.”

“Of course you are,” Ruth agreed, “Hilda anyone would, let’s face it, you’ve been Headmistress for how long? Well over twenty years, probably a lot longer if you count how long we were trapped. You’ve known little other than being Head, and now, suddenly, and through no fault of your own, you’ve been forced to resign. Of course you’re going to feel bad about it.”

Hilda shook her head, “But this is Nell, Ruth,” she said softly, “the person that I’d willingly sacrifice anything and everything for. How can I be feeling bad that she has this opportunity?”

“Because you have the same feelings as the rest of us,” Ruth returned quietly, “How do you think I felt toward Ros Moore two years ago? When I discovered she’d been made Headmistress rather than me, when Elinor switched scenarios?”

Hilda looked across in surprise and Ruth nodded, “Yes, I felt really bad, angry with Ros, even though I knew it wasn’t really her fault, especially angry because she’d done such a good job.”

“But that wasn’t your fault, Ruth,”

“No, and this isn’t yours,” Ruth replied, “but you’ll still need some time to adjust, that‘s all.”

“Perhaps you’re right, but I don’t know how to talk to her, even when we are alone. Everything I say seems to be an order.”

“Well why should that matter? The one thing Nell was good at was getting you to do things, if you can perform the same function now she’s got the authority, so be it.” Ruth stopped for a while then, shyly, she continued, “Do you love her any less?”

Hilda looked startled, “No! Of course not!”

“Well then,” Ruth smiled then, diffidently, placed an arm around Hilda’s shoulders. The Deputy Head leant against her gratefully.

“When did you become so wise, Ruth Derwent?” she asked softly.

Ruth smiled, “Oh I don’t know, probably from following the example of someone that used to be my Headmistress,” she replied, she looked at Hilda, “and who will be again, as soon as these investigations at Monash University are complete.”

“Thank you, Ruth.”

Aw! That was lovely!

Glad to see that Hilda is able to express her feelings to someone - I think most people would feel like that in her position. I think it also shows just what a good relationship Hilda has with her staff - that they aren't afraid to offer her help even if it's not strictly work related.

When Hilda returned to the cottage it was to find Nell already there, pouring over some security files on the kitchen table. She looked up as Hilda walked in and, for the first time, Hilda looked properly at her friend. Nell Wilson didn’t look as though she had slept well and she was holding her head stiffly, as though her shoulders or neck hurt. She quickly smiled at her friend then sat beside her.

“What are these, files from John?”

“Yes, he has ideas on how security could be improved gave me these to check through.”

Hilda nodded, “And you just thought you’d look through them now, did you?”

“Yes, it won’t take long and…” She stopped as Hilda reached across and firmly closed the files. “What are you doing?”

“Starting to do my job,” Hilda replied, she caught the almost guilty look in Nell’s eyes and continued, “and a big part of the job of Deputy Head is stopping the Headmistress from over-working.”

Nell seemed to relax very slightly, “Oh yes? And who taught you that?”

Hilda considered, “Not sure,” she said eventually, “must have been someone fairly significant though, she made a big impression,” she smiled.

Nell returned the smile, “Alright, I’ll stop working,” she said.

“Good, I’ll make us both a drink,” Hilda rose to switch the kettle on, “Oh, and Nell? You’re coming running with me tomorrow, I’ve missed you the last three days.”

“Hilda I can’t, I’ve got too much to…”

“Nell, that was not a request,” Hilda returned firmly, “now I know I can’t physically drag you out with me, but I promise that if you don’t come I’ll stand up in Assembly and order you off the dais…” she paused as Nell looked at her, puzzled, then continued, “using the Voice, Nell.”

“You wouldn’t?” Nell had gone pale.

Hilda grinned.

The situation in the School however was still tense, Hilda still finding it difficult to act normally, still finding it incredibly difficult to do anything other than remain silent at the many different meeting that the two of them had to attend. This continued until a meeting of the Senior Management team on the Friday…

Miss Wilson sat back in her chair, she looked around at the rest of the Senior Management Team, “I think that’s all so far, everyone, anything else any of you can think of?”

The other four all shook their heads, “OK then, Jennie, Mollie that’s all, Ruth, Hilda remain behind please.” She waited while the Bursar and Senior Housemistress filed out, closely followed by Rosalie Dene who had been taking the minutes. Nell took a deep breath then turned to the Senior Mistress and Deputy Head. “I hope the pair of you have the English Department sorted out now?”

There was a silence, Ruth Derwent obviously waiting for Hilda to speak, when it became obvious that she was remaining silent Ruth turned, “We have Nell,” she said quickly, “We decided to split the job between us, Hilda taking the literature side, me the language.”

“And that’s suitable for both of you?”

Ruth nodded and Nell’s expression turned on her friend, for the first time since the meeting began Hilda looked directly at Nell, “It is suitable,” she said softly.

Nell nodded slowly, “OK,” she said, “if anything similar to this should ever happen again, I don’t want it to take up so much time, you should have been able to arrange this without hassle on the first day. Understood?”

Both women nodded, Ruth very slightly pink under the rebuke, while Hilda just went paler than ever. Nell smiled, “I appreciate this is hard for both of you,” she said gently, “But I’m sure you can continue to be professional about it.”

“Yes Nell,” Ruth Derwent said quietly, she smiled at both the other inhabitants of the room and left.

There was silence for a time in the study, Miss Annersley rose and looked across at the Head, “I’d better be going too,” she said quickly, “I have some work to finish…”

Nell Wilson looked across at her friend, “Hilda, please sit down, we have to talk.”

Miss Annersley obediently sat again, waiting.

The Head swallowed, “Hilda, I can’t imagine how hard all this is for you,” she began, “especially as I’ve just had to say that, but it’s not exactly easy for me either.”

“I can appreciate that, Nell,” the Deputy Head said softly.

“Well, I remember one of the things that you always used to say, one of the things you credited me with giving you, that helped you do the job. That was a fully supportive Deputy, someone who was completely loyal, but someone that could be relied on to be completely honest, even when my opinion differed from yours.” Nell swallowed slightly then continued, “I-I would really appreciate having the same.”

Hilda’s face, until then somewhat closed in and guarded, seemed to relax, she smiled slightly, “You have it, Nell, of course you do.”

Nell also relaxed somewhat, “Good, and I’m relying on you to tell me if my performance is not good enough.”

Hilda rose to return to her own Study, “So far, Nell,” she said softly, “I’d give you ten out of ten.”

Good to see them adjusting to the new boundaries in their relationship - of course it's going to take time, but they're both making an effort and their friendship is ultimately strong enough to cope with whatever is thrown at it.

(or it has been so far ...)

Agrees with Liz here; this is hard for them both, but they will adjust in due course.

And it's good to see Ruth and Hilda agreeing to split the Headship of the English department between them - a better compromise than actually demoting Ruth for the period.

I sincerely hope that the authorities at Monash University don't take too long to sort their end of the situation out.

Thanks Lesley

In a different part of the School others were discussing the recent change in leadership, “Well she’s certainly different,” Kath Farman said quickly, she smiled round at the rest of the Domestic Staff, they were all enjoying a quick break in their Tea Room.

“How different?” The question came from two or three directions.

“More fiery, far less patient. Don’t think she suffers fools gladly.”

“Oh you’re in trouble then.”

Kath grimaced at the person making that remark, “Oh ha, ha, very funny. No, I mean, she’s different, seems much quicker. With Miss Annersley everything is calm, she keeps you calm and so she gets people to do things quickly and without fuss.”

“But with Miss Wilson she gets the same results but by jolting people into action,” her friend, Sarah Eldridge continued, “it’s more exciting but can be a bit too much for some.”

At that point a couple more of the Domestic Staff entered the room, one of them was Cherry Elliott, almost as soon as she had entered a voice from near the back of the room was heard,

“Better stop talking now, girls, don’t want your words to get back to them now, do we?” Lindsay Hopkins’ voice was as full of spite as ever.

Within the room there was a distinct lowering of the temperature, Cherry herself tensed and clenched her fists, however she said nothing. Instead Kath looked over with some annoyance,

“What’s wrong with you, Lindsay? Cherry’s not like that. She’s been here almost two terms now and has never done anything like that.”

“You know what it is, Kath?” this from Sarah, “she’s jealous, jealous because Cherry’s had the good fortune to find some really close friends.”

“Yeah and we know how she met them,” Lindsay sneered, “in prison, wasn’t it, Cherry?”

Everyone looked across at Cherry, she spoke quickly, “I’ve made no secret of my past, Lindsay, of why I was inside. Meeting Hilda Annersley was the best thing that’s ever happened to me, apart from Robbie being born. You think I’d let her down now? You’re crazy, or maybe, like Sarah says, jealous.”

“Jealous?” Lindsay snorted, “I just don’t see what she sees in you, unless…” she stopped, suddenly struck by an idea, “unless she’s fooling the rest of us.” She looked round in triumph, “yeah, maybe that’s it, maybe Hilda Annersley isn’t the paragon everyone else seems to think she is. Maybe the reason she was in prison, and this latest mess, are all showing the real woman. This latest thing, maybe she is a cheat, it’s all been discovered and…”

She stopped there as, suddenly, she was grabbed by Cherry, “You take that back you evil b*tch!” There was a struggle as the rest of the domestic staff tried to separate the two. Suddenly a new voice cut across them all.

“Was ist los? Hören Sie dieses Verhalten sofort auf!” Perhaps it was the German language, or maybe the fact that all the women knew that the owner of the voice was none other than Karen, their manager, whatever the reason the women all fell silent. Cherry and Lindsay broke apart. The Austrian woman glared round at everyone before fixing on the two at the centre of the disturbance,

“Frau Hopkins, Fraulein Elliott, what is the meaning of this action?” Karen had made an effort and switched back to English, she was completely fluent but had a slight guttural accent.

Cherry swallowed, breathing fast, she looked at Karen and flushed slightly, “I’m sorry, Karen, my fault, I lost my temper,” she turned to look directly at Lindsay, “I shouldn’t have hit you, Lindsay, I’m sorry, it won’t happen again.”

Lindsay Hopkins looked at Cherry, she had one hand held over her right eye, “You’re sorry?” she said disbelievingly, “and you think that’ll be enough? No way.” She turned to Karen, “She assaulted me, all these women are witnesses. I know the protocols, that counts as Gross Misconduct and I’m reporting it to you as my manager. Look what she did to me!” She removed her hand from her eye to show where Cherry had obviously struck her. The eye was starting to turn purple with bruising and there was a small cut above the eyebrow.

At her words there was an outcry from the rest of the women there.

“Silence!” The women quietened at the order, Karen turned to Lindsay, “I will get someone to look at your eye…”

“Stuff that, what about her? Are you going to do your duty?”

Karen’s eyes flashed, “Do not lecture me on my duty, Frau Hopkins,” she said angrily, turning she sought another of the women, ordering that she contact Nurse Chester. There was a short wait until the Nurse, carrying a First Aid box, appeared. Karen quickly apprised her of the situation, speaking quickly in German, Nancy Chester persuaded Lindsay to sit down, bathed the eye and pronounced the injury superficial.

“Enough of this,” Lindsay said angrily, “I want something done about her,” she pointed to Cherry, “she’s dangerous. If the School won’t do anything I’m calling the Police!”

Nancy walked back to stand next to Karen, “What are you going to do?” she asked, speaking German again.

Karen looked over at her, “Follow protocol,” she said bleakly, “I have to, especially considering who is involved.”

“What does the protocol say?”

“That the case is investigated by the manager, with help from HR if necessary.”

“You’d better call Rachael Pelter then.”

“I can’t, I’m a witness.”

“So?”

“So it needs to be investigated by the next line of management,” Karen said quickly, “I’ll have to report it to them.”

Miss Annersley looked, with some distaste, at the News Round-Up on her Internet connection. While the scandal affecting Monash University had passed a number of the papers by, it had figured strongly in others. The excerpt she had just been reading was not pleasant. Although it did keep stressing that the allegations were unproven, it also ensured that all those names being investigated were repeated on no less than six occasions. It was never nice to see your name in print associated with such allegations, especially as the journalist had been very clever at insinuating that he felt all those named would be found guilty. The one good thing was that the School was save for now, by resigning when she did it appeared to have blunted at least some of the attacks, although there were those that wondered why, if she were innocent, she had reacted in that way. Her musings were interrupted by a knock on the Study door and she looked up to see a very worried Karen standing there.

Hilda smiled, “Hello Karen, what can I do for you?”

Karen looked extremely ill-at-ease; she refused the offer of a seat, remaining on her feet and seeming unable, at first, to reply,

“Miss Annersley, I am sorry to disturb you,” Karen said quickly, “I was looking for Mrs Mackenzie.”

“I’m sorry Karen, you’ve just missed her,” Hilda smiled, “she, Jeanne de Lachenais and Jennie MacLeod are on their way to Sydney, they’re spending the weekend there. They had all built up a little spare time and decided to leave early to miss the Friday evening traffic. Was it important?”

“Yes,” Karen looked troubled, then brightened slightly, “No matter, I will speak to Miss Derwent, she is also a member of the Senior Manage…” she stopped as Miss Annersley shook her head.

“Sorry Karen, if it’s a member of the SMT then you’ll have to make do with me,” the Deputy Head smiled, “Ruth and Nell are both attending a conference in Melbourne, I don’t expect them back before eight tonight.” Her keen eyes noted that this news troubled Karen even further, “Karen, what is it? May I help?”

Karen thought for some seconds, “I don’t know,” she said, “it is difficult, very difficult.”

“Would you prefer to wait until Miss Wilson returns?” Hilda’s calm tones betrayed none of her own turmoil in saying those simple words.

Karen shook her head, “I cannot, the protocol says that the matter should be dealt with by the next most senior management, and that it is dealt with immediately. And we must follow protocol.” She said this almost as a prayer.”

Hilda rose and walked over to the Austrian woman, placing an arm around her shoulders she guided her gently to a chair, “Sit down Karen, and explain everything, I’m sure it’s not as bad as you fear.”

Actually I didn't write any yesterday - you're getting this as soon as I've written it.

It was only a short time later that Miss Annersley was speaking with someone on the telephone,

“Are you sure you can do this Hilda?” The voice on the other end sounded very concerned.

The Deputy Head sighed, “What else can I do Rachael? This woman can quote the entire Policy Manual, apparently her husband is a Trade Union Rep and she has always taken an interest in that side of things. And anyway, it is the correct thing to do, if we cannot abide by our own policies, regardless of who is involved…”

“Yes, I appreciate that, but can’t you at least wait? Let Ruth or Nell take it on?”

“No, I cannot pass this to Ruth,” Hilda said adamantly, “and the Protocol says to the next line of management, as I am the only one of the SMT on-site it falls to me.”

Rachael was silent for a while, acknowledging the truth of Hilda’s words, “Very well, I’m on my way over. What have you done so far?”

“I’ve spoken to Mrs Hopkins, she repeated verbally her accusation and, when asked, was happy to write it down. She had a friend with her. I’ve also told Karen and all the Domestic Staff present in their tea room that they will be asked for statements. Although it’s the weekend I’ve asked all of them to remain to allow us time to question them.”

“And what about Cherry?”

Hilda’s eyes darkened, “I’ve spoken to Cherry,” she said softly. Her mind returned to the interview performed only minutes ago…

Cherry Elliott was accompanied by Kath Farman; the older woman linking a friendly arm through Cherry’s. On realising who she would be seeing Cherry had gone so pale that Kath had thought she would faint, it was some time before she could persuade Cherry that they needed to go across to the Deputy Head’s Study. Once inside Hilda had invited the two women to sit.

“Miss Elliott,” Miss Annersley was deliberately formal, “are you aware of what is happening?”

Cherry nodded slightly, “Yes, Miss Annersley, Lindsay Hopkins has accused me of hitting her, Karen said there had to be an investigation.”

“Correct,” Hilda replied, “Now, the Policy Manual lays out specific requirements for the Manager conducting the Investigation. One of the first is that the employee being investigated must have an initial interview. The purpose of that interview is two-fold, firstly, to let you know what is going to happen. I will be interviewing all those deemed as witnesses to the alleged incident, that will include your manager, Karen, as well as all the other women in the tea room. I will also be interviewing Mrs Hopkins and I will be speaking to you. I will have the HR Manager Mrs Pelter with me, both to ensure correct procedure is followed and to be witness to the interviews. This incident, if proven, is termed Gross Misconduct, and you could be dismissed from your post. You should be aware of that.”

Cherry swallowed sharply at this but said nothing.

Hilda Annersley continued, “Now, the other point, while the investigation is on-going you are suspended with pay. You will not be allowed into any of the RCS buildings and will be required to surrender all passes and keys. This does not, in any way, constitute an admission that I consider you are guilty of the offence, it is solely to allow the investigation to take place.”

“But Cherry lives on-site, her Robbie goes to School here!” This from Kath Farman.

“I appreciate that, Mrs Farman,” the Deputy Head replied, “I have made contingency plans.”

“Plans?” Cherry looked up, her face distraught.

Hilda nodded, she pressed the intercom connecting her Study and that of the Headmistress, “You may come in now,” she said softly. The door opened and a familiar face showed itself. Louise Chad walked across to Cherry and placed an arm around her shoulders,

“Come on Cherry, you and Robbie can spend some time with us, you know we’ve got a spare room in our flat. Carol is collecting Robbie, it’s nearly end of School anyway, and Ally is packing some clothes for you.”

Cherry nodded, placing an arm around Louise’s waist, “Thanks Lou,” she whispered, she turned to look across at the Deputy Head once more, “Hilda, I’m so sor…”

Miss Annersley held up an arm, stopping Cherry mid-word, “Until the investigation is complete, Miss Elliott, it would be better if our contact was kept solely within prescribed lines.” Although her words were formal and harsh, Hilda’s eyes were full of pain.

Cherry nodded, “I understand, Miss Annersley,” she said, a catch in her voice, “I’ll be here tomorrow morning, nine o’clock, for my interview with you and Mrs Pelter.”

“I’ll see you then, Miss Elliott.” Hilda waited until the two girls had left the room and the door closed, then turned to Kath Farman, “Mrs Farman?”

“Miss Annersley you know Cherry is a good kid,” Kath began.

“Did she, or did she not strike Mrs Hopkins?”

Kath looked down at the floor for some time, eventually, reluctantly, she spoke, “Yes, she did.”

“Then I have no choice, Mrs Farman, the protocol is very precise.”

Kath Farman looked as though she wanted to argue the point, but the obvious pain in the Deputy Head’s eyes stopped her. “I’ll be waiting when you want a statement!” she spat out.

Hilda nodded and watched the cleaner stalk angrily out of the room, she slammed the door behind her.

It was perhaps forty minutes later when Rachael Pelter appeared, she greeted the Deputy Head in a rather subdued fashion and accepted the drink Hilda handed to her. She had with her a Master Copy of the company policy on discipline and the two women spent some time reviewing everything within the policy to ensure that they followed it exactly.

There had been eight other women in the tea room, apart from Cherry and Lindsay Hopkins and each of the witnesses had to be interviewed. As Karen was another witness that meant nine statements to obtain, ten if you counted Lindsay’s one accusing Cherry of the assault. Before starting the procedure Hilda called in Nancy Wilmot as the next most senior member of Staff, informed her of what was happening and asked her to cover for the School. She also asked Nancy to inform the Head of what was happening when Nell and Ruth returned later that evening, correctly predicting that the interviews would continue late into the evening.

By the time the interviews were over, and all the pertinent information had been collected, it was nearly ten pm. A message left in Hilda’s Study was from Nell, telling both women to go across to the cottage as soon as they were finished. Hilda and Rachael wandered wearily across to find that Nell had a meal waiting for them.

“Didn’t think you’d have had a chance to eat,” she said gruffly, “now, get stuck in, we can talk afterwards.”

Both Hilda and Rachael suddenly realised just how hungry they were and settled gratefully to eat. Nell was as good as her word and didn’t mention the case until all three were sitting back sipping appreciatively on glasses of wine (or fruit juice in Rachael’s case). Then Nell took a deep breath,

“OK, Nancy explained everything, and I’ve deliberately stayed away so you could finish, you have finished, I presume.”

Hilda nodded, “Yes Nell, we’ve taken statements from all the witnesses and from the accuser. As far as we are concerned it’s complete.”

“The only thing we have to do is listen to Miss Elliott, hear her defence,” Rachael put in, “we’ll be speaking to her tomorrow morning, first thing. Once we’ve heard her she has a number of options, if she decides to accept the verdict then, we’ll take a little time to discuss, then Hilda can pronounce judgement.”

“And if she does not?”

“Well she can ask for more time, to prepare her case, that would be perfectly reasonable, especially as this is happening so quickly, she may just need a little time to collect her thoughts although,” here Rachael paused, not sure how to phrase the next bit.

“Although?”

“Well, she may not be that fazed by this, I mean, she’s been through the real thing hasn’t she?”

“Prison, you mean?” Hilda asked softly.

“Think she’ll find this harder,” Nell said abruptly, “because it’s Hilda she’s facing. But if she decides she doesn’t need any more time?”

“Then I can tell her of her fate straight away.”

A short time later saw Rachael leaving, promising to be back early the next morning. Once the two friends had re-entered their sitting room Nell guided Hilda to the sofa, then sat next to her, her arm around Hilda’s shoulders,

“I’m sorry Hilda,” she began, “I should have been here…”

Hilda smiled slightly, “You couldn’t have done anything, Nell…”

“Of course I could, I’d have taken the case!” Nell was adamant.

Hilda shook her head, “No Nell, you couldn’t, the case will come to you only if Cherry appeals.”

“Well, at least Ruth would have been there, dammit Hilda, what are the odds that all of the SMT being away except you? At least you should have been able to pass it to Ruth, Mollie or Jennie.”

Hilda shook her head again, “No Nell, I couldn’t do that. Think about it, if this had happened when I was Head, what would you have done?”

Nell thought for a few moments then, reluctantly, nodded, “I’d have insisted on taking the case, wouldn’t have allowed Ruth or the others to do it.”

“Exactly.”

There was silence for a time, then Nell spoke again, “What of this Hopkins woman?”

“Determined to push the case,” Hilda said, adding softly, “and she has cause, all the witnesses agree, even Karen. I’ve just got to hear from Cherry, see what she says.”

Nell nodded, knowing not to press for details of the case; instead she just settled back on the sofa, pulling Hilda toward her so she could hug her, offering her unspoken support and sympathy.

Saturday morning dawned cold and grey; looking outside the woman standing in the hospital room thought the weather was very appropriate. She looked across at the woman sat in the wheelchair, the past week had been very difficult for Geri Shaw. Following her emergency surgery the Saturday before, she had made a slow and painful recovery. In total the medical staff had given her five pints of blood, and it was only in the last day or two that Pat Francis had been able to see some colour in her friend’s cheeks. Not that it was easy to see, much of the bruising around her head and face had faded to a greeny/yellow, but not all, there was still a significant amount of dark blue/black colouring. It was not just on her face; when helping her to get dressed Pat Francis had seen the bruising was still over her cracked ribs as well as across her back. It wasn’t possible to see her stomach as she still had a surgical dressing over her wound, however the drains and catheter had been removed.

Geri Shaw smiled across at her friend, “You don’t approve Pat, do you?”

Pat sighed, “It’s not that, Geri, I just don’t think you should be putting yourself through this, you could add to your problems. It’s only a week since surgery and you’re proposing to swan off and attend this thing…”

“My doctor has said I should be fine,”

“Only because you browbeat him into agreeing! And I know you’ll be in that chair all the time, but I still think it’s too much.”

“I can appreciate how you feel, Pat,” Geri Shaw said quickly, “but I’ve got to do this.”

“I know,” Pat sighed, she walked over and stood behind the wheelchair, releasing the brake she pushed her friend to the door, “Come on, the ambulance will be waiting.”

And just where is Geri Shaw off to? Something to do with Butcher et al.?

Wow - thanks for your prolificity (is that a word?) Lesley! I was scrolling through the last two pages reeeally slowly thinking 'there'll never be another post' - and there were three more than I expected! Thank you! Very Happy Kiss

Also worried by the turn of events but have faith they will turn out OK, somehow, in the end.

The ambulance took the two to a local crematorium; Pat Francis pondered the incongruity of people seeing an ambulance draw up at its gates, shook her head to dismiss the image. Inside a service was just beginning; the two women were able to find spaces at the back, there were only a few mourners. Studying them Pat could see just some who were obviously of the same family. An older woman in her sixties, two couples both in their late twenties or early thirties. The two men bore a marked resemblance to each other, and to the older woman, they were obviously brothers and the older woman their mother. One of the men, the elder, had his arm around his mother, she was sobbing into his shoulder.

When the service ended Geri Shaw asked Pat to wheel her over to speak to the family, as they got closer the younger of the two men looked up, seeing the two women, they were both dressed in their Prison Officers uniforms, he scowled,

“What are you doing here? Come to gloat have you?”

The older woman spoke quickly, “Hush Adam,” she turned toward the woman in the wheelchair, “Thank you for coming, Miss Shaw, I do appreciate it. None of Joanne’s friends were able to come.”

“That’s because all her friends are still stuck in prison.,” the younger man said bitterly.

Geri Shaw reached forward a hand, “I’m very sorry for your loss, Mrs Taylor,” she said, “if it helps at all, I can say she suffered no pain, her death was instantaneous.”

“How the Hell would you know that?” Adam Taylor burst out quickly, “She was killed by another convict in the middle of a riot.”

“I know, I was there.” Geri replied simply.

The Taylor family all looked over in astonishment, taking in the Senior Officer’s appearance, the fact she was in a wheelchair,

“You were there?“ it was the other man.

Geri nodded, “Yes, I was one of the three prison officers held hostage during the riot. I saw her being killed.”

“Saw her end her life in as wasteful a fashion as she lived it,” it was the older man, “Joanne never did anything worthwhile in her entire life, her death is just a fitting end.”

Geri Shaw looked across at the older brother, then back at Mrs Taylor, the woman nodded, “It’s harsh, I know,” she said, “but this family has long realised that Joanne would never achieve anything, never do any good.” She sighed before continuing, “It killed her father, you know? He had a heart attack just weeks after her conviction for armed robbery. In a way it’s fitting, that she should die in so worthless a manner.”

The woman’s face was drawn and her eyes full of tears. “What did we do wrong with her, Miss Shaw? My husband and me, where did we make a mistake? Nick and Adam have both turned out right, what mistake did we make with her?” The woman’s plea was heartfelt, she stared across at the woman in the wheelchair.

Miss Shaw shook her head, “I don’t think you did anything wrong, Mrs Taylor,” she said eventually, “I’ve been in the prison service more than twenty years, I’ve seen any number of men and women like Taylor. Decent, hard working families, no connection to any criminal activities. It just seems that some people are born who are unable to lead a normal life, who turn to crime almost automatically.”

Pat Francis nodded agreement, “I would agree,” she said, “I don’t have as much experience as Geri, but in the fifteen years that I’ve been a prison officer I’ve seen the same. There was nothing that you or your husband did that caused your daughter to turn to crime.”

Mrs Taylor nodded slightly, “Thank you, both of you, it’s a small comfort, something I’ll hold onto.” She paused before continuing, “I loved my daughter, you know, loved her as much as I love these two,” she indicated her sons, “but, just once, I’d have liked to be proud of her, like I’m proud of them.”

There was silence for some seconds, then Geri spoke again, “You can be proud of her, Mrs Taylor, very proud. Has anyone told you of her death?”

Nick Taylor replied, “They told us she was killed by another inmate during the riot, stabbed.”

Geri nodded, then winced slightly at the pain in her stomach and side, Pat Francis leant across, placed a hand on her shoulder, Geri smiled at her friend then continued.

“Yes, but you don’t know the details, the inmate who killed her did so because she helped me. At the time that inmate was,” she paused, searching for the word, “enjoying herself by continually assaulting me, to the extent that I was not fully conscious, was unable to stand on my own. Taylor and another woman would hold me up, so this other woman could continue.”

“Oh God, I’m so sorry!” Mrs Taylor said, aghast.

Geri smiled sadly, “Your daughter refused to continue holding me, defied the other woman, said I had suffered enough. She wasn’t challenging her, wasn’t attacking her, but the other woman took it as such. She stabbed her through the heart.”

“Oh my God!” Mrs Taylor dissolved into tears, Nick Taylor drew her to him, hugged her.

“Mrs Taylor,” Geri continued gently, “I fully believe, that had Taylor not have done as she did, that the rescue attempt, when it came, would have been too late. That this could well have been my funeral. By her actions, and the delay it caused, I lived. You should be very proud of your daughter, Mrs Taylor, by her actions and in her death, she saved a life.”

There was silence for a time, Mrs Taylor continued sobbing into her son’s shoulder, both men looked across at Miss Shaw with slight, though tear-stained, smiles, “Thank you,” Adam Taylor said, “for telling us that. It helps.”

Geri nodded, feeling somewhat faint and dizzy. Pat Francis leant forward, “Time to go,” she whispered, “You need to get back to the hospital.” She released the brake on the wheelchair and steered her friend back outside to the waiting ambulance.

There was an unexpected visitor awaiting Hilda Annersley when she walked across to her Study on Saturday morning. She had barely entered the room herself before there was a loud peremptory knock at the door. Before she even had the chance to speak the door opened and a voice said, “I would like to speak to you Miss Annersley.”

The Deputy Head looked across, “Then come in, Mrs Hopkins, sit down,” her voice as calm as ever, a fact that seemed to irritate the other woman.

Lindsay Hopkins and an unknown man wearing a Visitor’s Pass clipped to his shirt, walked in, “This is Mike Logan, he’s my Trade Union Rep,” the words were said with a sense of some triumph.

Miss Annersley was unperturbed, she held out a hand, “Good morning Mr Logan, I am always happy to see Union Representatives here.”

The man seemed a little shocked, “Er, good morning Miss Annersley,” he said, extending his own hand to clasp hers, “I must say I didn’t think I’d be welcomed here.”

No?” Hilda raised an eyebrow, “I can’t imagine why that should be, I have the utmost respect for Trade Unions, and how they safeguard their members’ rights.” She smiled slightly, seating herself at her desk, “Now, how may I help you?”

Lindsay Hopkins made to speak but the Union Rep stopped her, “Let me, Miss Annersley, Mrs Hopkins has expressed concern about the disciplinary case that is currently being looked at by yourself.”

“Concern? Does she wish to withdraw the charge?”

“No, Miss Annersley,” Mr Logan looked somewhat embarrassed, “She feels that, as the person being accused is a close friend of yours, that you will,” he stuttered slightly under the gaze of those blue/grey eyes, then swallowed and continued, “that you will be too lenient, that you will…”

“That you’ll let that slut off with a slap on the wrists.” Lindsay Hopkins interrupted.

Hilda’s gaze switched to the other woman, she spoke quietly but with authority, “I do not permit the use of obscene or foul language within these walls, Mrs Hopkins. I suggest you find some other way to express yourself.”

“My apologies, Miss Annersley,” Mike Logan said hurriedly, “It won’t happen again.” He turned to speak urgently to Lindsay, there was a heated but low voiced discussion. Eventually Lindsay looked across at the Deputy Head,

“Sorry, didn’t mean to say that, I was upset about what happened to me yesterday.”

Hilda nodded gravely, “Am I to take it that you have doubts as to my impartiality, Mr Logan?”

The man nodded, “There are concerns, it is known that Miss Elliott is a protégé of yours, that she and her son are frequent visitors at your house.”

Miss Annersley thought for a while, eventually she nodded, “Yes, I can see how someone might have concerns. However both Mrs Pelter, the HR Manager, and I have been scrupulous in following the procedures as laid down in the policy manual.”

“But, at the end of the day it’s the investigating manager, you, who makes the decision on the final penalty. Isn’t it?”

“Yes it is. Mr Logan, what can I do to prove that this Investigation is being performed properly?”

“You can let me see all the statements, all the evidence, and be there when you confront that…” Lindsay Hopkins stopped, mindful of her earlier rebuke, “when you confront Cherry Elliott.”

Hilda shook her head, “No, Mrs Hopkins, I cannot permit that,” she held up a hand to forestall the immediate outcry, “however I am happy for Mr Logan, in his capacity as Trade Union Representative, to do just that.”

There was a hurried discussion, then Mr Logan nodded, “Yes, that will be acceptable,” he said, next to him Lindsay Hopkins had an expression of some triumph upon her face.

Cathy - wasn't referring to John Howard, you had said 'that wretched Taylor woman' - Taylor was the woman who died in the riot - Lindsay Hopkins is the one accusing Cherry.

Miss Di - I assumed Mollie and the others were flying, not driving.

When Rachael Pelter appeared some fifteen minutes later, Hilda introduced Mike Logan and explained his presence. Although a little surprised, she was also happy for him to sit in. At nine am precisely there was a knock at the door, once Hilda had called ‘come in’ the door opened and Cherry Elliott stood there. The company policy allowed the accused to bring along a work colleague, TU rep or a friend and Louise Chad was with her. The Deputy Head immediately waved the two to chairs. She swiftly introduced the additional person; checked that Cherry did not object to his presence – she did not.

The interview followed recommended lines from the Policy Manual, Cherry Elliott was warned again, that the charge against her was Gross Misconduct and that the penalties for this charge, if proven, could include anything up to dismissal without notice. She was then asked if she required more time to prepare her case; she said no. Then she was asked for her statement detailing her version of what had happened the day before in the tearoom.

The Deputy Head was very gentle but thorough, asking questions and clarifying points. Mrs Pelter took down the statement, writing in clear, legible handwriting, she also, on occasion, stopped Miss Annersley to give advice on correct procedure. For his part the Union Rep took no part in the proceedings, solely there to observe. He made a few notes. When Cherry had finished she was asked to read through the written statement, both she and Louise did so, then signed it at the bottom as a true representation. Once that was complete the two were asked to wait outside.

“She hasn’t said a word about it,” Hilda said flatly.

“No, and yet all eight of the other women mentioned it,” Rachael replied, “It’s not something we can ignore.”

“Are you sure? If she hasn’t said anything…”

“Definitely,” the HR Manager was adamant, “While it doesn’t excuse her behaviour it does at least provide some mitigation.”

“Then you think I would be justified in not applying…?”

“I do,” Rachael looked over at the Union Rep, seeing that he appeared somewhat confused, “Take a look at the statements from all eight of the other women, Mr Logan, see what Miss Elliott omitted.”

“I think we’d better speak to her again,” Hilda said, making up her mind.

A short time later Cherry Elliott was asked about the discrepancy between her version of events and that of the other women. After some seconds thinking she sighed, “Yes, they are right, that has been happening.”

“Why on Earth didn’t you say so from the start?” Rachael Pelter sounded almost impatient.

“Well, because I didn’t think it mattered,” Cherry said quickly, “and anyway, I’m no grass.”

Hilda Annersley took a deep breath, “Miss Elliott, this is not ‘grassing’ someone, this is reporting behaviour. Do you realise that, without this knowledge I would have had no choice but to dismiss you immediately from this employment? You are very lucky that your work colleagues decided that the time had come to report everything.”

“You mean Cherry’s staying?” Louise smiled quickly, a smile that faded when she saw how stern the Deputy Head appeared.

Miss Annersley nodded, “Miss Elliott is not being dismissed,” she said softly, “The evidence, including that offered by the accused herself, proves without doubt that she did strike a fellow member of staff and this would normally be sufficient to warrant dismissal. However we find that, although there is no excuse for her behaviour, that there are mitigating circumstances. Namely that you had been the subject of a campaign of harassment and bullying.”

Hilda sat back in her chair, keeping her gaze on Cherry’s white face, “You are being given a Final Written Warning, Miss Elliott, a copy will be sent to you and a copy will be held in your personnel file. Real Chalet School Industries and the School itself disapproves most strongly of your behaviour, should you be reported for any transgression in the future it will be enough for summary dismissal.”

Cherry nodded slightly, “I understand, Miss Annersley, thank you.”

Mrs Pelter leant forward, “Miss Elliott, if you accept this judgement then this episode is over, Miss Annersley can revoke your suspension, however you should be aware that you are entitled to appeal if you wish.”

“Thank you Mrs Pelter, that’s not necessary, I don’t want to appeal.”

“In that case, Miss Elliott,” Hilda put in, “You may go, thank you for your attendance.”

Thank goodness *some* people know the difference between reporting behavious and sneaking. I don't blame Cherry at all for not bringing this harassment out as self defence, especially since everyone knew her past record, but I *do* respect her colleagues who *did* report it.

Just hope that none of the cleaning staff who dislike her find out that she's on a 'final warning' and do something which will still provoke her into action resulting in her dismissal.

Like Mary, I feel very sorry for both Cherry and Hilda in this episode. Hugs for both are certainly in order!

*Please* may we have something cheerful soon, Lesley - such as Hilda's name being cleared by Monash and her being able to resume her position as Head?

There was silence within the Study for some time, then Miss Annersley turned to look at the TU Rep, “Mr Logan, did you have any problem with my handling of that affair?”

Mr Logan shook his head, “No Miss Annersley, on reviewing the evidence and listening to the statements today I think you were completely fair.” He paused before adding, “Are you planning to take things any further?”

Hilda and Rachael exchanged glances, Hilda nodded, “Yes, Mr Logan, I believe I am.” She reached across and lifted the telephone, dialling through to the Domestic staff tearoom, when someone answered the phone she spoke, “This is Head, I mean, Deputy Head here,” Hilda stumbled very slightly before continuing, “Could you please ask Mrs Hopkins to come to my Study? Thank you.”

It was only a few minutes later that there was a loud knock on the door, Lindsay Hopkins walked into the room, her eyes going immediately to the Union Rep, “Well? What happened? Was it fair?”

“Mrs Hopkins,” Miss Annersley’s voice cut across that of the other woman, “I asked you here because I have something extremely important to discuss.”

Lindsay frowned, “What?”

“In the course of our investigations into the assault on you, Mrs Hopkins, Mrs Pelter and I took statements from all those who witnessed the assault. They all reported something rather disturbing.”

“What are you talking about? Did you sack Elliott?”

Hilda’s eyes flashed, “I did not dismiss Miss Elliott, Mrs Hopkins, although the assault was confirmed, there were mitigating circumstances, namely that she had been subjected to a campaign of harassment and bullying carried out by you over the last several weeks.”

For the first time Lindsay Hopkins paid attention to the Deputy Head’s words, “That’s ridiculous,” she blurted out, “Did Elliott tell you this? She’s lying, trying to get out of trouble.”

“Miss Elliott did not tell me this, Mrs Hopkins, however the eight women who witnessed the assault all signed statements to that effect. And because of that, I am now officially telling you that you have been accused of harassment and bullying, behaviour that is termed as Gross Misconduct. You are advised that this may have the penalty of immediate dismissal. Mrs Pelter and I will be completing our investigations over the weekend and I will see you at 9am Monday morning, you may bring a friend, work colleague or union rep with you.” Miss Annersley paused to take a breath before continuing, “If you require more time to arrange your defence please let me know. In accordance with policy, you are suspended with pay from the Real Chalet School and all its buildings. You will be required to surrender all of your keys and passes. I should emphasise that this does not, in any way, constitute an admission that I consider you are guilty of the offence, it is solely to allow the investigation to take place.”

Lindsay Hopkins stared, completely shocked, she shook her head, “This is a joke, a way to let her off the hook, you can’t get away with this.” She looked across at the Union Rep.

Mike Logan returned the gaze, “The proceedings involving Cherry Elliott were carried out with absolute impartiality,” he said firmly, “I have no problem with any of it.”

“And this? This farce?”

“There appears to be enough evidence to warrant an investigation, I will, of course, represent you and accompany you to any hearings.”

Lindsay Hopkins’ face seemed to fall at these words, wrenching her security pass from around her neck she flung it on to Miss Annersley’s desk and stormed out of the room.

Here's hoping that Lindsay will get her 'comeuppance' - she certainly deserves it. I'm even more glad now that the 'reporting' came from the other witnesses and not from Cherry - but I'm a little nervous about what Lindsay might try to do to Cherry over the weekend!

(Of course Hopkins is unlikely to go quietly, and there's Hilda to consider, and the slimy politician, and the looming dilemma....)

Hi Rachael! Thanks for your help on the HR issues! Laughing

It was almost two hours later before Hilda Annersley was ready to leave the School; after saying ‘goodbye’ to both Mrs Pelter and Mr Logan, she settled down to try and catch up on some of the work that had been neglected the day before. In addition, as she was covering for the School there were a number of queries put through to her. John Coates informed her that Lindsay Hopkins had left the site and confirmed that she was not allowed back on site until 9am Monday morning. She then spoke to Karen and those of the domestic staff available, requesting that they all be available either the next day, or early on Monday, to confirm their statements with regard to the bullying charge.

As the time grew closer to one pm, Hilda was suddenly interrupted by a knock at the door, when she looked up Nell Wilson was standing, framed in the doorway.

“Are you planning to stay here all day?”

Hilda smiled slightly, “No, Nell, I’ve nearly finished.”

“Good, because lunch is ready.” The Head’s quick grey eyes caught the look in her partner’s eyes, “Was it so very bad?”

Hilda sat back in her chair, looked up at the ceiling, “I have just had to reprimand and issue a final written warning to someone that I look upon as a daughter,” she looked across at Nell, “Yes Nell, it was bad. Especially as I can fully appreciate why she did it,” a rueful smile, “she was defending my honour.” She bent her head down, closed her eyes.

Nell walked across and stood next to her friend; placed an arm around her shoulders, “But you didn’t have to fire her, did you? At least the worst didn’t happen.”

“True, though it’s no thanks to Cherry, why on earth she didn’t say anything…”

“Well considering her background, you can hardly expect her to now can you? Didn’t you say that’s one of the strictest rules in prison?”

“Yes, and one that I followed just as religiously as everyone else,” Hilda said quickly, “I suppose I should just be thankful that the rest of the domestic staff felt that the time had come to report the abuse.”

“Rachael stopped by on her way out,” Nell said quietly, “I gather you’ve got another case on Monday?”

Hilda nodded, “I couldn’t overlook it, not when I had eight signed statements all saying basically the same thing.” She looked over at her friend, “In this case, though Nell, I fully expect the accused to appeal.”

Nell shrugged, “So I’ll be involved, no problem. Now come on, I know you’re covering this weekend but you could do with a break.” She helped Hilda pack up her work and ushered her out into the cool June afternoon.

When they got to the cottage Nell pushed Hilda into the sitting room, she stopped dead, sat on the sofa, waiting, was Cherry. Robbie was playing with his bricks on the floor.

“I think you two need to talk,” Nell said gruffly, “come on Robbie, help me get lunch ready,” she held out a hand and Robbie ran over. The two of then left the room and the door closed behind them.

There was an awkward silence; Cherry had risen on seeing Hilda, she had regained her colour since the last time Hilda had seen her, instead now appearing very worried.

“What is it, Cherry?” Hilda asked gently.

Cherry gulped slightly, “I-um, I came to say sorry,” she said quietly, “for reacting to that woman, for hitting her.” She looked across at Hilda and the older woman could see tears in her eyes, “I nearly ruined everything, and I let you down, Hilda, and I swore I’d never do that.”

Hilda swiftly moved across to stand in front of Cherry, she reached out and drew the girl to her, with another gulp Cherry rested her head on Hilda’s shoulder while Hilda’s arms went around her.

“Cherry,” and now Hilda’s voice was free from the emotionless, stern quality it had held during the hearing, “you have not let me down, never think that.”

“But I might have been sacked, I’d have had to leave here, I’d have wrecked everything, not just for me, for Robbie too.”

Hilda shook her head, “Silly child, do you think I would have allowed Robbie to be affected? He would have continued at the School, regardless.”

“Even if you’d had to fire me?”

“Even then.”

Cherry said nothing for some seconds, content to continue drawing strength from the other woman, then she lifted her head, “But if necessary, by-the-book, you’d have fired me, wouldn’t you?”

Hilda’s face was grave, “Yes Cherry, if the results of the investigation had deemed it necessary I would have dismissed you.”

“S’alright,” Cherry replied somewhat indistinctly, her face buried into Hilda’s shoulder, “Prefer that, fairer, so I can face the rest of the women.”

The rest of the weekend went smoothly; by common consent neither Hilda nor Cherry referred to the incident again, content to know that their relationship had not been damaged. Hilda succeeded in speaking to all of the Domestic staff that had made statements, informing them of the pending charges against Lindsay Hopkins and asking if anyone wished to change their statements. None of them did. The interview on Monday was only short, but was tense. Lindsay Hopkins refused to admit she had done anything wrong; ignoring the advice of her Union Rep, Mike Logan, she insisted that the others were lying, and that Hilda Annersley was protecting Cherry Elliott.

Eventually, after she had refused the offer of more time to marshal a defence, Miss Annersley pronounced judgement. Mrs Hopkins was issued with a Final Written Warning, and warned as to her future conduct. She immediately announced that she would be appealing and, after carefully noting this down, Mrs Pelter informed her that she would be seen by the Head in due course, and that she remained suspended with pay.

Nell Wilson, when informed, just nodded, having expected that. She arranged times to speak to the witnesses, and got Rosalie to write to Lindsay Hopkins to arrange an appointment, a time early the following week was arranged. Hilda and Nell discussed the situation briefly but didn’t dwell upon it. They were both still finding the situation, with Nell being Head, to be very tense. Although they appeared to have fully accepted their changed roles there were occasions when something would show that one or other of them felt concerned. One such episode occurred during a routine full Staff Meeting on the Wednesday of that week…

The Head sat back in her chair and smiled round at the full Staff Room, “I think, Peggy, that plans for a swimming pool have already been discussed at board level. I know that both Hilda and I have pushed it.”

There was a satisfied sigh around the table, Peggy Burnett leant forward, “Have you considered the size of pool? Or whether it should be inside or outdoor?”

“What are your preferences?”

Peggy thought for a minute, “As we have the room, then an Olympic-size Pool would be wonderful,” she said eventually, “as to inside or out – I’d say probably inside, the pool is going to be for teaching purposes, after all, if we want pure leisure we still have the sea.”

Nell Wilson made a couple of notes on the pad in front of her, “Good,” she said, pleased, “that tallied with my original ideas anyway. Fine, is there any other…” she stopped as the Deputy Head rose, “…Hilda? Was there something?”

“A query, Nell,” Hilda Annersley said softly, “the new pool, one of its primary functions is going to be that of teaching the very youngest of our pupils? The size of an Olympic pool, plus the fact that it will not have a proper shallow end. Could these items not intimidate the more timid of our non-swimmers?”

Nell frowned slightly, “They will be wearing floatation devices, until Peggy and the others are happy for them to progress. There shouldn’t be a problem.”

Hilda nodded and sat down. However her words had obviously caused Peggy to think again, “Actually, you know, Nell,” she began, “I think Hilda has a point. When we first start to teach, some of the kids need to be able to know that they can stand up at any time.”

“And having a small pool will be less intimidating,” Emma Neachell put in, “otherwise, seeing some of the horseplay from the stronger swimmers could upset the learners.”

The Head listened with a slight frown, she amended the notes in front of her before speaking, “Very well, a small pool as well as the Olympic one, now, any other business?”

The rest of the Staff Meeting was uneventful, when it was over Miss Wilson and Miss Annersley walked back to the Admin block together. Miss Wilson was obviously a little annoyed about something as her replies to Miss Annersley’s questions were somewhat terse. Eventually, as they reached the Studies, Miss Annersley turned to her friend, “Nell? Have I done something to upset you?”

Miss Wilson made to reply in the negative, then checked herself, she glanced round, “Come into my Study, Hilda,” she said.

Once both of them were sat in the Head’s Study, Miss Wilson took a deep breath before starting to speak, “Look Hilda, I thought at first that you were doing it without thinking, but I’ve come to realise it’s deliberate. And it’s got to stop. You are undermining me and showing yourself in a bad light.”

Hilda Annersley looked confused, “I’m sorry Nell, I don’t know what you are talking about.”

Nell Wilson made an impatient gesture, “Dammit Hilda I’m not stupid, every single decision of mine was made only after an objection from you. You can’t say that was accidental! Don’t you think you’re being unfair?”

Hilda shook her head, “No, Nell, it was not accidental. It was giving you the opposing viewpoint. ‘Playing Devil’s advocate’ as it were,” she smiled.

“I’m serious, Hilda,” Nell was angry now, “if you’ve any objections kindly give them to me in private. Don’t contradict me in public. This School deserves to see its two most senior staff in agreement.”

Hilda nodded, “Very well Nell, if that’s what you want.” Her eyes looked down at the floor, but not before her friend had caught the change in colour, she rose, “If you’ll excuse me, I must finish some marking before lunch.” Hilda’s voice was as soft and gentle as always, but Nell could hear the disapproving undertone. She nodded abruptly and Hilda left the room.

Nell sat, thinking, at her oval table for a time. She was surprised at just how angry with her friend she still felt. ‘After all, loyalty is the one thing I didn’t feel would be a problem, even with this awkward situation.” She stood rapidly and walked across to gaze outside, her eyes not taking in the wilderness beauty, intent on her own concerns. ‘Can we work this out?’ she thought to herself, ‘Or will I have to recommend that I cannot have Hilda as my Deputy?’

Interesting!

Ouch!!! I think they're both very insecure with this situation, despite their stated views and intentions, and they are both starting to feel hyper-sensitive. And then they will over-react to one another simply because they are so aware of the other's feelings and responses.

And I agree with Hilda about the littlies in a large pool - Anne wasn't scared of water and pools, but her belief in her ability to swim when she couldn't led her to step straight off the edge a number of times, even under close supervision. I also think they may have had to build a small pool anyway to keep in line with the legislation, but I'm not too sure about that.

So glad to see Hilda & Cherry come through with their relationship intact.

The Hilda-Nell situation, on the other hand, really startled me. I expected some awkwardness and discomfort, but not accusations of disloyalty, particularly if the pool discussion was any example. It didn't seem at all an attempt to undermine Nell's authority, only to make sure the situation was fully discussed, and it would have been counterproductive for Hilda to wait until after the meeting to bring it up privately. I'd have felt extra-incompetent if I had to put an item back on the agenda because of something overlooked... Maybe talking through the issues more beforehand would help?

*feeling very sorry for both of them*

Nell shied away from that thought, it was not something she even wanted to contemplate. She was pleased when the sound of the telephone interrupted her, forcing her to return to the task of running the School. Her anger remained however, as did Hilda’s obvious disapproval, meaning that, at lunchtime, neither of them spoke to the other. This caused many of the Staff to notice, some of them for the first time, that the two senior staff were in the middle of a serious disagreement.

Discussing it amongst themselves after lunch, Ruth Derwent listened as first Nancy Wilmot then Ros Moore mentioned it to the group consisting of the three of them and Kathie Ferrars.

“We’re so used to them being a unit,” Nancy said, “It comes as a shock to see that they can have rows. I mean proper ones, not their normal bickering.”

“That bickering is their way of showing affection,” Ros agreed, “I think they both enjoy it so much that it’s just their normal behaviour now. But sitting and not even addressing a word to one another isn’t normal.”

“And it was obvious that Nell was angry about something,” Kathie put in, “and I think Hilda was too – though it’s far more difficult to tell with her. Any ideas about what’s happened, Ruth?”

The other three all turned to the Senior Mistress, she thought deeply for a moment, “Perhaps,” she said slowly, “and it’s not too difficult to guess, is it?”

The other three sat nonplussed for a time, then, “You mean the whole, Head/Deputy Head thing?” Ros said diffidently, “but I thought they’d both adapted really well.”

“That they’ve allowed us to see,” Nancy said suddenly, “but it must be difficult for Hilda, in fact it must be difficult for both of them. I shouldn’t imagine that Nell finds it any easier to give orders to Hilda. It’ll be a real culture shock for them both.”

“Well is there anything we can do to help them?” This from Kathie, “I mean I know Nancy and I were angry with Hilda a few weeks ago, but that’s forgiven now, if not forgotten. I don’t like to see them like this.”

Ruth shook her head, “Neither of them will accept any of us interfering,” she said firmly, “If we are in a position to help out, fine, but we shouldn’t try and force things. I don’t know about you, but the thought of both of them suddenly turning their attention on me because they’re annoyed at my interference isn’t something I want to contemplate!”

“Amen to that!” Kathie said fervently; the discussion broke up then, all four realising that they had barely ten minutes before the beginning of the next lesson in which to prepare.

The afternoon passed slowly; in the Admin Block the office and finance staff were very subdued, not wanting either the Head or Deputy Head to become aware of their presence. That the pair of them were both annoyed and upset showed in their behaviour.

Miss Wilson was very abrupt, impatient, if a file wasn’t available immediately she would emerge from her office remarking sarcastically that it would be quicker looking herself. Miss Annersley wasn’t impatient, at least not outwardly, but her comments, delivered in her gentle voice, became more and more biting. The term ‘gentle irony’ didn’t come close to describing how the words would cause the recipient to feel.

Partway through the afternoon Miss Wilson left for a Chemistry lesson; this was one that she had not felt could be taken by any of the other mistresses, being a class for the Upper Sixth, an exam class. Everyone else in the Admin Block breathed a sigh of relief - at least if the pair were not next door to each other then the tension would abate somewhat.

Sometime later Nancy Wilmot, Mathematics Department Head, appeared in the Admin block. On being told that Miss Wilson was not available she knocked on the Deputy Head’s door. When Miss Annersley called ‘come in’ she entered.

“Nancy, what can I do for you?” Hilda Annersley asked.

“Hello Hilda, I was actually looking for Nell.”

“Oh, well she’s teaching at the moment,” Hilda’s voice grew icier even as she said the words, she looked across and saw Nancy flinch slightly, “Sorry Nancy, private quarrel.” She consulted a master timetable on her PC, “It looks as though it’s a double lesson, Nell won’t be free for another forty minutes. Anything I can help with?”

Nancy thought for a moment, “Well the request came from you initially, just, what with all the events at the start of term I’d left it on my desk,” she said. “Remember at the beginning of term, you wanted to know about the Maths Department spending over the last two years? Also projected budgets?”

“Oh yes, and a report from you on your views of how the Department will evolve in the future?” the Deputy Head smiled, remembering asking this, “I believe you had some innovative ideas for field trips off site? Ways to stimulate interest in your subject?”

The two women moved to the small table to one side and the Maths Head brought out a number of papers from a file she carried. They had been in discussion for some fifteen minutes when there was a knock on the door; before Hilda could say anything Nell Wilson opened the door. At sight of her Hilda Annersley suddenly awoke to the realisation that she had been usurping Nell’s role, she hastened to explain,

“Nell, Nancy was here to discuss her ideas for the future of the Maths Department…”

“She was supposed to discuss them with me,” Nell said flatly.

Hilda nodded, “Yes, I realise that, however I was well aware of the request, I would have passed the information on to you as soon as you appeared.”

“That will not be necessary,” the Head turned to Nancy Wilmot, “Would you take the information into my Study please, Nancy, we can discuss it now, I’ll be there in a minute.”

Nancy looked at the other two women, gulped slightly and nodded, “Yes Nell,” she gathered up the papers and walked across to the connecting door.

As the door closed Nell Wilson turned, “Why were you speaking with Nancy about this, Hilda?”

“I told you, you were teaching and as I already knew the project it made sense to get Nancy’s views now. I would have told you everything of course.”

“Really?” For the life of her Nell couldn’t help the sarcastic inflection she gave the word.

Hilda Annersley’s face became impassive, “Of course I would, I spoke to Nancy without thinking, I apologise for that, but what reason do you have for believing that I would withhold information?”

“The reason that I think you haven’t appreciated that you are not Head at the moment, that I have the authority, not you.” Even as she said the words Nell Wilson could have bitten her tongue, but she was too late.

Hilda rose, her face white, she spoke quietly and with a voice of ice, “Thank you for reminding me of my status, Miss Wilson, I shall endeavour not to forget again.”

“See that you don’t, Miss Annersley.” Nell stalked across to the connecting door and passed through, slamming it shut behind her.

Ow!

Methinks this will get worse before it gets better

Sad I don't like it that they're fighting. It's like being a small child hearing your parents argue about something.

Shocked Shocked Shocked
This is a situation that none of us would have anticipated, and so well done Lesley, that we can see it unfolding.

I too fear it is going to get worse, and have some ideas about the dilemma now!

Confused trying so hard not to be worried

Not a good situation, really don't like seeing Nell address Hilda as Miss A, not good at all.

Wouldn't like to be in their cottage - atomosphere must be horrible!

This is very hard. And it must be very painful to write. You do put yourself through the mill don't you Lesley?
