They said that Jack never recovered, and that was true in a way. They also said that the life had left the house the day she had left, and that was not true. Life would always be part of that house; her life would always be part of that house. They said that no one would forget her, well that is true for a time, you remember her, but in the end she will be forgotten, we all will, and Jack knew that. It would be a long time however before she was forgotten, and Jack also knew that. He had the proof in his hands when…

“…I will always be grateful to Joey, she saved my life and my sanity. Her forgiving nature and her calm acceptance of me meant I knew I always had a home with you, even after meeting Neil, and I owe that to Joey, she was my rock, my safe place…”

“…She gave me the mothering I had been trying to give to the boys, and badly needed for myself, and by example she taught me so much. Joey was the one person I could trust. I knew that she would not lie to me, and when she explained about my father I trusted her. She opened up not only her home and family to me and the boys, but her heart also. Roddy, Roger and I will always be grateful to you both for your unreserved love and acceptance…”

There were several in this vein, some from people he knew, others from people he had never heard of.

“…You don’t know me, and I hope this isn’t presumptuous of me, but when I heard the news I had to write…My daughter died of polio and in her last weeks, the times she was happiest, the times she relaxed and smiled where when we were reading Miss Bettany’s books to her. Please accept my condolences, the world was better for having known her.”

“…I wasn’t one of those girls who was always being talked about at school, I was never one of the in crowd, not even a full prefect, but Mrs Maynard always made me feel special. She remembered my name, and would talk to me, even sought me out on occasion. She remembered details as well, things I had said about what I wanted to do, about my likes and dislikes, nothing special, but all the little things that make you feel someone notices you. It was Mrs Maynard who encouraged me to apply for my first job. I hadn’t told anyone when I read the advertisement because I didn’t think I could do it, but somehow I found myself telling her one day, and she was so enthusiastic, she made me believe in myself. I got the job, and the promotion that followed it, because she believed in a nobody, or rather because she saw somebody in the nobody…”

“Saw somebody in the nobody…” That summed her up for Jack. It was what she had done for him. Seen somebody in the assistant doctor, in the brother to a teacher, in the one without the knighthood. Joey loved him, Jack had always known that, and it had always been enough for him. She saw the somebody….and now, as the letters dropped for the final time from his hand, she saw Jack once more.

I know they are fictional characters, but when I'm reading the CS books or the drabbles, I can't imagine a life without Joey.

I loved this at the Gather, Carolyn. It is so tender and emotive, and the ending is so gentle, so touching.

That was beautiful Carolyn, and a great reminder of who she seems to be for EBD.
