‘My dear madam, my mind is quite made up,’ Mr. Denny said firmly, in reply to Miss Annersley’s protestations. ‘I have enjoyed my time here enormously watching the fair damsels grow in their music has been so gratifying, and no man could ask for a more inspirational place to work than this…this idyllic jewel,’ he gestured towards the snow-capped mountains visible through the study window. The music master continued with a gentle smile, ‘but I don’t intend to spend the rest of my days here. I have some savings, and I plan to tour Europe, in search of today’s great musicians. Wherever there are concerts, there will I be found. Who knows, I may even bump into the little Margia, if I have luck! I will, of course, return occasionally, to spend time with my sister. I have discussed this with Sarah, naturally, and she is quite content to remain here for the present. As for the future, I cannot say. I expect we shall both return to England, in time, to Elgar’s fair country. All that is left is for me to thank you with all my heart for the happy years I have spent here.’

‘Plato’ set down his cup and saucer on the low table in front of him, and looked up at the Headmistress expectantly. That lady’s thoughts were in turmoil. When Mr. Denny had requested an interview with her, she had invited him for Kaffee und Kuchen without the slightest inkling that this had been his purpose. However, she gathered her never-failing composure around her, and smiled warmly at the oddest member of staff she had ever known, before replying, ‘Then there is little for me to say. While we shall, of course, be very sorry to see you go, Mr. Denny, there is clearly no point in my arguing with you. I wish you every happiness in your travels, and in your retirement. I can only hope you will visit your sister frequently and possibly even attend one of our plays or concerts, to inspect whoever we choose as your successor!’

Miss Annersley’s eyes sparkled, and Mr Denny chortled in a way that might have surprised some of his pupils. While ‘Plato’ had a reputation for being ridiculously solemn, or passionately joyful, or terrifyingly angry he rarely displayed a sense of humour. Miss Annersley, however, shared a comfortable, semi-formal sort of friendship with the eccentric musician, and would miss him.

After a few minutes of conversation, Mr. Denny stood up to leave. ‘My thanks, once again, for allowing me to experience such a pleasant career, Miss Annersley.’

‘The pleasure is ours, I assure you,” Miss Annersley replied sincerely, ‘and may I thank you for your long services to the musical welfare of our girls.’ With which Mr. Denny executed his funny little bow, and left the room. Miss Annersley walked over to her desk, and pressed the bell. A moment later, Rosalie Dene opened the door.

‘Hilda?’ she said, and Miss Annersley turned from the window, from which she had been contemplating the “idyllic jewel” in which they lived, and said,

‘Ah, Rosalie, would you take this down, please? We shall be needing a new music master.’

My plot bunny is very new to me, and she isn't quite sure of her abilities yet, so please bear with us. Incidentally, is anyone interested in any more?

Sounds good, yes I'd definately like some more Emily. Loved the description 'idyllic jewel'. Very Plato!Just one tiny thing, could you break it up into a couple of paragraphs please, as it'll make it easier to read. Otherwise it's looking very promising!

‘Finally, girls, it gives me great pleasure to introduce the two new members of staff joining us this term.’ Miss Annersley was nearing the end of her start-of-term welcome, and some of the girls were getting fidgety, particularly in the lower ranks of the school. However, there was a general stir of interest at this.

The Headmistress continued, ‘Miss Trilby is our new nursery nurse,’ indicating a young, pretty woman seated next to Miss Moore. ‘Miss Trilby tells me she is very much looking forward to joining in the fun and games in the Kindergarten,’ she added, smiling down at the tiny people sitting on cushions, just in front of the dais all of whom were looking excited at the prospect of a new playmate.

‘And we also have a new Head of the music department, Mr. Bell.’ She gestured towards a man at the end of the row of mistresses, who acknowledged Miss Annersley with a shy grin. Most of the girls were craning their necks to get a proper look at the new master, as they had been told at the end of the summer term of Mr. Denny’s imminent departure, and were interested to see who would be replacing him.

Not everyone was paying attention, however. While Miss Annersley said a little bit about Mr. Bell’s previous posts, Con Maynard’s thoughts were far away from the Chalet School. She had, somewhat foolishly, begun writing a new story the day before and despite here sisters’ attempts to wake her up before returning to school, at least half of Con’s consciousness was currently devoted to a hoard of wood nymphs, whose home was being attacked by a vicious oak-tree disease. The result was that she completely ignored Miss Annersley’s speech, and only returned to the same plane of existence as the rest of the school when her sister Len, who was sitting next to her, poked her in the ribs, whispering, ‘get moving, idiot!’

Con realised that everyone was getting to their feet, and followed suit in short order.

Having surfaced briefly, however, Con rapidly descended into her fantasy-world once again. She was still thoroughly entangled in the doing of the nymphs the next morning more so, in fact, having dreamed about them all night. She daydreamed throughout breakfast, and most of the morning’s lessons. Had it not been the first day of term, when the mistresses were more lenient that usual, Con would have been the proud owner of no less than seven order marks, from various sources, by morning break. She was in luck, however, and escaped with only scathing remarks, which, in her present state, went practically unnoticed.

After lunch, during which Con managed to pass the vase of flowers to an astonished Rosamund Lilley, when she had asked for the potatoes, Con remembered, miraculously, that she was due for music practice. She made for the practice rooms and retrieved her cello from the store cupboard, then absent-mindedly sauntered along the corridor, peering into each room to find an empty one.

While she was engaged in this the room two doors away from Con suddenly fell silent, and the door opened. Out of it marched Mr. Bell, who spotted Con, and offered her a friendly smile. ‘Hello there,’ he said, and, nodding towards the room he had just left, ‘lovely piano, isn’t she? Or don’t you play?’ he added, eyeing Con’s cello.

Con, however, was gazing at Mr. Bell open-mouthed, apparently speechless. Unfortunately not quite speechless, though. ‘C-c-claudius!’ the unfortunate girl stuttered. By some awful coincidence, Mr. Bell, with his slightly curly dark brown hair, dramatic, passionate green eyes, and generally…well, woody good looks, happened to look exactly like Con’s image of Claudius, her chief nymph.

Looking slightly non-plussed, Mr. Bell replied good-naturedly, ‘no…erm, it’s Andrew, actually. Are you all right, my dear?’

This episode had the effect that the traditional cold bath had on most of the Chalet’s pupils it woke Con up properly for the first time in two days. ‘I’m fine!’ she gasped, and, with a horrified glance at Mr. Bell’s face, which was adorned with a vaguely amused expression, she darted into his recently vacated practice room, and slammed the door.

Hmm. Not quite sure where on earth this is going, if anywhere, but never mind. Thanks for all the positive comments!

Lovely Emily. Please keep going. That is all so- Connish!! A word of advice. Do NOT feel tempted to make this a communal. You're doing a lovely job, and I'm sure we haven't forgotten what happened the last time the CBB took up an innocent and harmless drabble of yours! *g*

Hmmmm. Obviously I haven't got a very nice mind, because when I saw the title of the drabble I thought of something else. Maybe I read too much Victoria Holt when I was younger ) Loved the bit about Con passing a vase of flowers to Rosamund.

Lisa_T, I'll do my best, but I don't know how successful that will be! Besides, I was very pleased with the way Dr. Venables turned out!!!

It has to be admitted that Con’s practice time was completely wasted that day. She settled down to work, but every time she was about to get stuck into playing, she would remember what she had done, and blush. In the end, she rushed through her scales, decided to ignore the arpeggios (arpeggii? I never know!), as they just wouldn’t work when she was in this mood, and then opened her Bach.

This was just as bad, however Con’s humour was about as far from dancing as it could possibly be, and her fingers were being lazy, into the bargain. Finally, she rested her head on her cello with a gusty sigh, exclaiming, ‘It’s no use!’

She packed the instrument away and left the room quietly, peering around the door first, to see if Mr. Bell was going to make an appearance. He didn’t, thankfully, and Con escaped to the Senior Common Room, where she buried herself in a book until the start of the next lesson, forgetting her troubles in the process.

Andrew Bell was enjoying his new job, so far, even though he had only been in it a day. The other staff seemed nice enough, although it was a bit strange being the only residential staff member who was male. He had only taught one class that day, and Upper IV a had seemed keen enough to hear what he had to say about symphonic poems. He had also given three private lessons, to a couple of sixteen year-olds with very promising voices, and to a young oboeist from the Upper Third. She had been something of a problem, being a new French girl, with hardly any English. Andrew had got round that by communicating, mainly through mime, that they would play some easy duets together, which seemed to go down well.

‘I’ve sorted one thing out, anyway,’ Andrew mused silently, sitting in the staff-room after school, ‘and that’s that teaching really is for me. Can’t imagine what I was thinking, before.’ After this, his thoughts were interrupted by Kathie Ferrars’ invitation to join a game of rummy that was about to start on the other side of the room.

OK, here's the next bit!

Whilst Len always seemed to project an image of poised confidence, and Margot was extroverted and jolly (most of the time, anyway), Con was far more reserved, and not particularly fond of drawing attention to herself, especially if she was doing something foolish. Having forgotten all about Mr. Bell soon after the incident, the first day’s events returned to her in full force the next day, when Va had music with the new teacher. Con worried that she had made a bad impression on him, and spent most of the lesson trying to hide behind her exercise book.

Margot, who was sitting next to Con, didn’t help in this venture, as she insisted on flirting with Mr. Bell flicking her golden curls around and gazing at him with her big blue eyes, the merest hint of a pout on her lips. The sensible teacher ignored her, however, and Con regained her composure sufficiently to decide that the best plan would be to see Mr. Bell after the lesson, explain what had happened, and put the unfortunate episode behind her.

When the bell rang for break, Mr. Bell dismissed the class, and they filed out quietly. Ignoring a questioning look from her mischievous triplet, Con hung back until everyone had gone, and then began, ‘erm…Mr. Bell?’

The teacher, who had been engaged in cleaning the blackboard, turned round, saw Con, and said, ‘Ah- Con, isn’t it? And don’t you mean “Claudius”?’ he finished with a grin, which faded instantly as Con’s face turned crimson. ‘I say, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to poke fun at you, honestly.’ Mr. Bell sounded like a schoolboy in his concern, a fact which endeared him to Con considerably.

She returned his smile somewhat sheepishly, and said, ‘it’s all right. I just wanted to apologise for yesterday,’ seeing he was about to speak, Con pushed on resolutely, ‘you see, I was in the middle of writing a new story, and you look just exactly like one of my characters, Claudius, so when I saw you, I- I thought it was him. That’s all. I know it sounds a bit mad, but- ’

‘Not at all,’ Mr. Bell assured her cheerfully, ‘I know exactly what you mean my brother writes, and he gets a bit like that sometimes. Don’t worry about it. Now, hadn’t you better be heading for break?’ he added, glancing at his watch.

‘Gosh, yes!’ Con gasped, scrambling her books together, and leaving the room, doing a very good impression of a young hurricane, in her haste.

There is that, and no, Rachel, I can't revise all the time, but drabble-writing does present a huge excuse for not revising at all, ever, and given my current knowledge of Chemistry and Biology, not to mention History, I'm trying to rid myself of excuses. Somehow my story notebook followed me to school, despite strict instructions to stay safely at home where it can't distract me, so I may be forced to pay it some attention. Rolling Eyes

Thanks Vikki!

During Fruhstuck on Sunday morning, Miss Annersley rang the bell that was next to her plate. When there was silence, she stood and addressed the expectant faces gazing up at her, ‘Girls, after Church this morning there will be rambling for the rest of the day, with a picnic lunch. Please get ready as quickly as possible and meet outside seniors, senior middles, junior middles and juniors. Form prefects please go with two or three others to the kitchens first, to collect your picnic baskets from Karen. Oh, and don’t forget your cameras, if you have them, the views are quite spectacular just now!’

The Head smiled, and took her seat again, then turned to answer Miss Ferrars’ question. ‘Thank you, Kathie, I would love some more coffee,’ she said gratefully, holding out her cup. Miss Ferrars had a mischievous expression on her face, though she was doing her best to conceal it.

This was explained as she said, ‘Miss Wilmot and I thought Mr. Bell might like to join our party, and introduce his flute to the Auberge. You wouldn’t mind, would you, Miss Annersley?’

Hilda glanced at Mr. Bell, seated between Kathie and Nancy, whose amiable face was innocent. ‘Of course not,’ Hilda replied, carefully keeping her features impassive. ‘I have no doubt our…friends at the Auberge will be delighted to hear you play, Andrew. And Nancy and Kathie will be ideal guides for your first ramble. I do hope you enjoy yourself.’

‘Thank you, Miss Annersley, I’m sure I will. I’ve been longing to play in the open air, but I haven’t had a chance yet.’ Miss Annersley smiled innocently.

After the service the girls ‘croc-ed’ sedately back from the school’s Catholic and Anglican Chapels. Once they were safely in their dorms, however, tongues were loosed, and the speed at which they chattered excitedly was rivalled only by that at which they scrambled into their rambling gear. In short order the Seniors congregated outside the front door, to find Miss Ferrars, Miss Wilmot and Mr. Bell, flute case sticking out of his knapsack, awaiting them.

The Head Girl, Josette Russell, arrived with their picnic, and said, ‘Where are we going today, Miss Ferrars?’

‘To the Auberge,’ Kathie replied promptly, then, glancing at Nancy, she continued, ‘Do keep your voices down when we get there, girls Mr. Bell is going to…erm, give us a concert.’

Len Maynard, noting the wicked sparkle in the mistress’ eyes, caught on immediately, and resolved to make sure no-one gave away the secret of the Auberge. Len was partnered by her dark-haired triplet, and, positioned about halfway down the ‘croc’, the sisters talked eagerly about school matters.

‘I do think Mr. Bell is a sport,’ Len remarked presently. ‘We’ll all miss dear old Plato, of course, but at least we’ve got such a jolly replacement.’

Con agreed fervently, her mind dwelling for a second on her personal reasons for dubbing him ‘a sport’. ‘Yes,’ she replied, ‘and he seems to be getting chummy with Miss Ferrars and Miss Wilmot, so he must be good fun.’ Indeed, both Con’s observations seemed to be accurate, as the two mistresses were losing no time in getting to know their new colleague, at the rear of the line. Mr. Bell had already spent some time with Nancy and Kathie in the evenings, playing cards in the staff room, but this was the first opportunity they had had to ‘talk really properly’, as Kathie put it.

After interrogating Andrew about his first week, Nancy asked interestedly, ‘This is your first teaching post, isn’t it? What did you do before?’

‘Yes, you’re right. Oh, before I…well, did this and that. Nothing much.’ Andrew replied somewhat evasively, then, avoiding further questioning, continued, ‘I say! Ought they to be shrieking like that? They’ll rouse the whole Platz!’

Kathie chortled, and Nancy, by way of a reply, marched up to Margot Maynard and proceeded to tick her off for behaving like a junior. Presently the party arrived at the Auberge a strangely subdued party, thanks to Miss Ferrars’ warning, which had been reinforced by Len, when the girls had broken ranks on leaving the Platz. Nancy guided the unsuspecting young man to a spot near the fence, saying casually, ‘Here you go, play away!’

‘All right,’ Mr. Bell agreed amiably, ‘but I warn you, I’m a pianist, really, so don’t expect anything much, I beg you!’ He perched on the fence, flute in hand, looking, as Con reflected wryly, rather nymph-like, and began to play, a delicate, haunting air that seemed ideally suited to their surroundings. After the first few notes, however, he almost fell off the fence in shock. Looking behind him in amazement for the source of the silvery notes that the echo had flung back at him, he realized that he had been ‘had’, and began to laugh. The girls and mistresses joined in, delighted at both the music, and the success of their prank. ‘Oh yes, very amusing!’ Mr. Bell said good-naturedly, ‘and as for you, Miss Wilmot the next time I see you looking so angelic I shall watch my step!’

Nancy arranged her face into an injured expression Kathie merely grinned at her and said, ‘Well, Mr. Bell, won’t you carry on playing? Only, do try not to fall into the abyss, I should hate to have to explain to Miss Annersley that we…well, lost you!’ Mr. Bell consented, and continued to play. The girls listened in rapturous silence for despite his protests, Mr. Bell was an excellent flautist, and the effects of the echo made the music curiously eerie.

At the end, after the last soft notes had died away, the group basked in the calm quiet for several moments, until the musician himself broke the spell, saying in a disappointingly matter-of-fact sort of way, ‘Well, how about a spot of lunch?’

I think Mr Bell might have a chemical background perhaps. What do you think Emily? How about resurrecting "tune of the week"? By the way, if you had to pay royalties for every time you plagiarized small jewels, you'd be broke (and so would Charlotte if it comes to that). Is it going to get autobiographical soon? Am now running away fast where you can't find me...

You are not welcome in my drabble, Prunella. Evil or Very Mad Evil girl. Anyway, here's the next bit.

A letter to Mr. Bell, from England.

Dearest Andrew,

I’m going to send this to your mother, and ask her to forward it to you, wherever you are. I do hope she does. Andrew, I know I’ve said all this before, but I must say it again: please come back to London. I can’t imagine why on earth you want to teach, but if teach you must, at least do it where I can see you. No, in fact, don’t teach. Come back to us. We can’t go on without you. We’ve tried quite a few people, but it’s hopeless, because none of them are you, and neither Charlie nor I will ever be able to accept it and let you go. I know we’re both being horribly selfish. Darling, we want you to be happy, we really do, but we simply don’t understand why you left like that. Perhaps you’ll be ready to tell us soon? Quite apart from anything to do with the three of us, I miss you, Andrew. I didn’t realise quite how much you mean to me, until you left. I can’t bear the thought that I might not see your face, or hear your voice, again. Please write. Just to see your handwriting, to touch something you’ve touched, would be better than this. I know it’s unfair of me to say things like that, and I’m sorry, but before I go, I just want you to know that I’m thinking of you every moment of the day, and I will continue to do so always. God bless you, Andrew.

Ever yours, Isabel

I am NOT Prunella, and you know that perfectly well. Nice story though.

#92:  Author: EmilyLocation: Land of White Coats and Stethoscopes. PostPosted: Tue Jul 27, 2004 7:30 pm

Yeah, OK, just as you like. But please try to be friendly here, I know it's difficult for you, but you can do it occasionally! And please try not to post ridiculous irrelevancies if you can help it. Of course Mr. Bell doesn't have a chemical background, he's a musician. Yes, I am aware that this post could be deemed irrelevant.

#93:  Author: Guest PostPosted: Tue Jul 27, 2004 7:43 pm

OK I'll e-mail ridiculous irrelevancies. Whatever you want dear. And you should be able to tell I'm not Prunella - I spell better (and Prunella, you'll blow your cover completely if you object Twisted Evil ).

A very little snippet. Honestly, every time my nice little bunny goes off to sleep, certain little schoolfriends bring this up again Rolling Eyes The fact that the bunny keeps going to sleep suggests it's not really worth writing, but here's some more anyway. Smile

From Andrew, to Isabel.

My Isabel,

Yes, it is unfair of you to say that. But then, I suppose it was unfair of me to leave in the way I did, so we’re quits. The truth is, Isabel, I think about you all the time, too. After I got your letter I spent an age just breathing it, to try to catch a hint of you. The though that I might not see you again tears my heart apart. I know you’re asking, why, then, don’t I come back? I can’t Isabel. I do owe you an explanation. It’s so tranquil here, I’ve been able to think a bit, so I’ll try to tell you why I left. In London everything was so hasty, I knew I’d break down if I saw you again, so I had to get away.

I suppose you’re aware that it was to do with Carter? We hadn’t been working well for a while I admired him enormously, I still do, but it seems we’re too similar. That’s not supposed to sound as arrogant as it does. Anyway, the night before the Wigmore (sorry about that, by the way), we had quite an impressive shouting match. We both said…things. I just can’t work in London, knowing he’s around, criticising everything I do. I know, I’m weak. If they knew here they’d call me a ‘spineless jellyfish’. But even if I had stayed, you wouldn’t have thanked me for it, I’d have been unbearable. I won’t tell you where I am, I doubt you’d believe me if I did. Look, Isabel, I’ll be home at Christmas, staying with my parents I should think. I’ll try to see you, both of you, then. Tell Charlie as much as you think he should know.

With all my love, Andrew

P.S. You probably won’t welcome professional advice from me, but why don’t you stop looking for a pianist? Change direction, find a couple of other strings, see where that goes. It’s worth a shot, and at least you’d stop terrorising poor helpless pianists simply because they’re not me.

‘Cherie, you look like you need this.’ Mademoiselle Lachenais placed a cup of coffee next to Andrew’s freshly sealed letter, and gave him a comforting smile. ‘It was difficult to write, I think? At least, that last sigh of yours nearly blew me away!’

‘Thank you, mademoiselle’, said Andrew, gratefully sipping the coffee. ‘It was…very difficult. But necessary. And it’s done now.’

‘Quite right, my dear.’ The mistress shot a swift, searching glance at his troubled face. ‘It will all work out, Andrew. It usually does.’

NB I don't know if 'cherie' can actually be used for a bloke...um...haven't done French for a couple of years Embarassed

You ask so nicely, I feel it would be rude to ignore... (although I may have to hunt down the person who bumped it and torture her...yes, your royal highness, I mean you!!! I know where you live!!!!!) I would update, only there is no more story. Honestly. I don't mean it's finished, because it's quite clearly not, only the bunny has run off to pastures new. If anyone feels like taking it up, you're quite welcome, really! And Lisa, it would be quite entertaining to start another Dr. Venables, wouldn't it? Wink

That's not a good enough excuse I'm afraid. If your bunny's not helpng I'm sure Charlotte and I can arrange to come up with a selection of plot lines for you... all drawn from our own experiences obviously. *runs off to hide in the O'Reilly - you don't know where that is*
