The thirty minutes that she had been sitting in the room waiting felt like the longest of her life. Longer even than the pain-filled nights that she had endured for so many years, although those were mostly in the past now. But out of her suffering had come a loving husband, great friends and a happy home and now the icing on the cake was about to arrive.

On cue, the door opened, and a little girl ran in and straight over to where she was sitting. Phoebe Peters bent down. ‘Hello Lucy. I’m your new mummy. Welcome home.’
