Hello,
This is my second attempt at starting a drabble, my first (fortunately) got lost when the board got hacked. This time I have much more of an idea of what is going to happen, so it should be loads better :) If anyone has any criticisms, please tell me.

It was breakfast time at the Round House, and for once it was a peaceful affair with only Madge and Jem present. Unusually, Jem was having a quiet week at the San, the first in a long while, which allowed him the luxury of a long breakfast at home. Also, it wasn't long till the summer holidays when various of their offspring (and associated friends) would be visiting. Therefore Madge and Jem were making the most of the peace and quiet whilst they could, and were sitting reading their post in a companionable silence.

Madge sighed, as she looked at a pile of her mail.
“Is everything all right Madge?” Her husband asked, wondering if there was bad news from one of the schools many ex-pupils. It was only a few months since Madge had heard the sad news that Paula von Rothenfels, one of the early pupils at the Chalet school, had died. Madge had taken the news badly, feeling that it was wrong for a pupil of that generation to die whilst she herself was still alive and well. Consequentially, Jem was worried that should one of Madge's letters contain a similar piece of bad news, she might make herself ill with worry. He was therefore relived when Madge smiled.

“It is all Joey's fault you know” she said
“It always is!” Jem laughed back, “Has she done anything specific this time?”
Madge replied, “You remember when we were all together in Switzerland over the New Year, Joey suggested that there should be a Madge Bettany Scholarship for the school?”
“As I remember she more than suggested, I doubt she would have let us leave the country had you not agreed!”

Thankyou very much to everyone who has read this. Sorry if it is getting off to a slow start, I wanted to set the scene...

They both remembered Joey's insistence on the matter. Joey had been very keen that there should be some scholarship or prize that bore her sister's name. Madge Bettany (now Lady Russell, happily married for many years, and mother to 6 children) had, years ago been the founder of the Chalet School in the Austrian Tirol. In the intervening years the school had gone form strength to strength (despite relocating first to Guernsey and then the British countryside, due to the Second World War).

Nowadays, the school had a branch in Switzerland, next door to where her sister, Joey Maynard now lived, as well as a British branch not too far from the Round House, Madge's home. There were many scholarships, prizes and awards available for new and existing pupils. Indeed, there was one bearing Joey's name, as well as another named after Mademoiselle Lepattre who had joined Madge in her venture when the school was founded. Several old pupils, or their families, had also contributed towards the scholarships and prizes available. Joey had gently reminded Madge, that seeing as she now had the money to afford such things, as the schools founder, it was her duty to provide a scholarship!

Thank you for reading it, and being interested. Here is todays installment!
Bethany

Despite the years that had passed since Madge had herself taught at the school, she still played an active role, especially so for the British branch. Therefore, once Joey had convinced her of the benefit of such a scholarship, Madge had discussed it thoroughly with the staff at the British branch before making any decisions. After much discussion, they had arranged the details for the scholarship, and by the Easter holidays it had been advertised to the nearest twenty schools.

Madge had decided to offer the scholarship (in its first year at least), to girls in the area surrounding the British branch of the school. These girls would have already heard something of the school, and would therefore, hopefully, have an idea as to whether it would suit them. Also, if they did win the scholarship, they could chose between weekly and termly boarding, so they could still see something of their families and old friends. It was hoped that this would ease the transition from their old life to their new. The scholarship would be offered to a pupil who would start in the Upper Forth when the new term started, and would cover all their school expenses until they left the Upper Sixth. Secretly Madge hoped they would spend only one year in each form!

“Have you had too many applicants Madge?” Jem questioned, “or not enough?”

Madge had been hoping that all her talk about the details of the scholarship had distracted Jem. But it seemed that he did remember the reason for their discussion. There were, in fact, several reasons why Madge had sighed over the papers the post had brought her. She wasn't quite sure how much of that she wanted to share with Jem. That in itself confused Madge, as for many years she had shared everything with Jem, and she hoped he had done the same with her. She decided that, for now at least, she would only enlighten him as to part of the reason for her distress.

Bethany

“No, no, it isn't that.” Madge replied, “There were more applicants than I expected in fact, but not too many to deal with. All the applicants have sat their tests, and they have been marked. I don't know if I mentioned it before, but we decided to use the same tests as the school were using for their end of year exams. This way they won't have to do another set of tests to see which form to place them in if they win the scholarship, as well as obviously saving me the work of designing a whole new set of exams.”

“What is the problem then? You don't exactly look happy Madge”

“I don't just want the scholarship to go to the girl who did best in the tests, I want it to go to a girl who will fit in at the Chalet School, and do well there.”

Madge went on to explain to Jem how as well as undertaking tests in each subject, the prospective scholarship-pupils had also been asked to write an essay. The topic had been, “What makes a good girl or woman”. Madge had intentionally left the title fairly vague, to give the girls something to think about. She had hoped that this would allow her to decide which of the girls who had done well in the scholarship exams, would benefit most from five years at the Chalet School.

“Looking at their exam results, there are six girls who have done exceptionally well, all of whom are clever enough to deserve the scholarship. There essays arrived in the post today, I was hoping that reading them would make my decision easier” Madge explained

Hmm whilst I love the idea that the scholarship should go to a "Proper Chalet Girl" so to speak I have a feeling that none of the 6 academic high flyers are going to fit with the ethos.

Either that or something more sinister is going to happen. I really think there is a sinster side to this story which is going to be sprung on us soon (if not this is proof that I've been reading too many thrillers and books with a sting in their tale late).

Today's section. Wheelchairprincess: nothing sinister is happening today, or tomorrow and probably not the next day either, but I cant offer any guarantees any further than that ;)

“Did it?” Jem asked, guessing that it hadn't.

“No, not really. Well, one of the girls has written a very detailed essay on the benefits of money. She seems to think a young women role in life is to earn as much money as she can, then spend it on making herself look perfect, and then marrying as well as possible. To be honest it isn't especially well written either”

“I can't really see her fitting in at the Chalet School” Jem replied

“No, and I don't think she would benefit from the scholarship. Her essay suggests she would like to leave school at as young an age as possible” Madge said sadly, “However, the other five have all written very good, well thought out essays”

“And you have no idea how to chose which one to award the scholarship to?”

“Exactly. They all deserve it, and I am sure they would all do well with it. But we cannot afford to award five scholarships each year”

“Certainly not, especially if you plan this to be awarded annually”

“It will be if there is enough interest. By the time we have five years worth of scholarship pupils there will only be Daphne, Cecil and Phil of our girls still at the school, and if I have calculated correctly, it will be Daphne and Cecil's final year. So the money won't be a problem”

“As long as you don't try and award the scholarship to five girls each year! I can see your problem though” Jem replied thoughtfully, “and I may have thought of a solution”

Thank you for reading this. I dont think they will make Joey's family pay for their girls education. I think Madge sees Joey as her own daughter in some ways in this, so kind of expects to pay. Here is todays section anyway.

Bethany

“Oh?” Madge sounded surprised. Jem hadn't even read the essays, how he could know which girl to award the scholarship to she didn't know.

“Well, you said they were all from relatively local schools, and it is nearly the end of term. Why don't you invite the six – no you said five didn't you? - pupils to come for an interview? That way you would get to meet them in person, you could held the interviews at the school.” Jem proposed

“Hmm, that is an idea. If I chose a date just before the end of term, they could see the Chalet School in full operation as well. I am sure I could make it close enough to the end of term that missing a day of school wont do them too much harm”

They sat and discussed the details together for a little while. Then Jem excused himself form the breakfast table and set headed off to the San for the remainder of the day. After carrying the dirty plates through to the kitchen, Madge phoned the School to arrange a suitable day for the interviews. She gave some thought to planning an itinerary for the interview day, but decided that that would be something best discussed with the school. After all, it would depend a little on the school timetable that day. Next, Madge sat down to write letters to the five pupils, inviting them to interview. Her following task was somewhat more difficult. She was determined to also write to the unsuccessful pupils, so they would not be waiting in uncertainty for too long. Eventually she had written a letter that she hoped sounded suitably encouraging, but not patronising. She copied this out for each of the unsuccessful candidates, rather wishing that she had a typewriter for such jobs, and made her way to the post office.

It's so hard to write to an unsuccessful candidate. I once got one from the university programme that I wanted to get into saying, in effect, "you aren't good enough for us. Good luck with the rest of your life." It's the "have-a-nice-day" ending that really gets you. A friend who is a school principal hates having to do the calls to the candidates she hasn't hired for a position.

That was a good idea of Jem's. I'm looking forward to more of this.

When Madge returned, she sat down with a cup of tea and read through the five promising essays again. She was hoping to get a little more insight into each of the girls. However, her mind kept returning to the same train of thought and she found it hard to concentrate on the essays.

Each essay stressed the importance of honesty. Obviously Madge approved of this, and had tried to teach her own children to be honest, good people. Reading these carefully written essays made her wonder just how honest and good her own life had been. Throughout her life Madge had tried to be a good person, however, there were two secrets she held. She had held these secrets for many many years since she had been Madge Bettany, rather than Lady Russell. In fact it had been a good many years since there had even been anyone else alive who knew these secrets.

For the first time, Madge found herself wondering if the time had come to share these secrets with someone. She was finding them increasingly hard to keep, especially from her husband Jem, Then she caught herself, and decided that she needed to stop being so selfish. However hard it might be for her to keep the secrets, it would be considerably worse if the people involved were to find out. She owed it to so many people to keep these things to herself, even if it made her life more difficult. She was after all just one person. If her secrets were to come out, the lives of many people, people who she held dear to her, would be badly affected.

Madge was going to let you know today, but she seems to have got distracted by other events :) Maybe tomorrow!
Bethany

The ringing of the telephone startled Madge out of her contemplative state. Remembering that today was Rosa's day off, Madge answered the phone herself, glad for the distraction from her memories.

“Lady Russell, I am so glad you are in, I have such wonderful news for you”

Madge replied, “You can call me 'Aunty Madge', like Connie does you know!”

“Sorry, I forget. You will forgive me when you her the news though” said Bob, Connie's husband

“Connie isn't ill is she?”

“No, no, sorry if my phoning worried you, but you're the only relative in England I could find the phone number for. And I would have had to wait at least an hour to put in a call to Switzerland” Bob continued, “Anyway, I can't hold the news in any longer – the baby was born safely a few hours ago”

“I am not falling for that, I know it isn't due for another five weeks. Did Joey put you up to this?”

“No, it is true. The Doctor thinks there must have been a mistake with the date somewhere along the line. They were really worried last night when Connie started, but the baby is a good size and is wonderful and healthy”

Madge felt somewhat embarrassed, anyone could tell from Bob's voice that the best thing in the world had happened to him, and here she was, accusing him of making up the whole thing!

“Congratulations, I am so happy for you both. Please pass on my love to Connie, and the baby” Madge replied, “Is the baby a boy or a girl? Not triplets I assume?”

“A beautiful baby girl” Said Bob, with a lot of pride in his voice

“Have you chosen a name yet?” Asked Madge

“No, it was all so sudden you see. I think we will when Connie wakes up this evening. But you reminded me, Connie asked that when you tell her Mother, could you say that she will be called “One” please?”

Madge giggled, “I will, I imagine that Connie has been waiting years to take that revenge on her Mamma. Is there anything else I can do, would you like me to phone Con's other relatives for you, so you can go back to her? If you would like me to travel in to London I could, if I would be of any assistance?”

“Thanks Lady-Ru, I mean Aunty Madge. If you could phone Connie's parents, and her Uncle Dick, and let Len and Margot know I would be very grateful. I don't think we will need you to come to London though, but I am sure Connie will appreciate the thought”

“Sure, I will do that, everyone will be thrilled by the news. I will let you get back to her, but do let me know if I can be of any help.”

Working on autopilot, Madge booked a call to Switzerland for the early evening to tell Joey the good news, and then made two quick phone-calls. The first to her twin brother, Connie's Uncle Dick at the Quadrant, and the second to Connie's triplet sister Margot, in Edinburgh.

As Madge sat down, a series of memories flicked through her mind, dating back to the birth of her first child.

As Madge sat down, a series of memories flicked through her mind, dating back to the birth of her first child.

The humidity. So room was so hot and stuffy it was hard to breath.

The guilt. Mother and Father were so disappointed in her.

The fear. She was so frightened, would the baby live, would she herself live?

The pain. When would it stop?

Time passed. Then, the pain stopped and a little baby was thrust into her arms. Her baby.

The love. Towards this helpless little girl, Madge would always love her.

The pride. She had produced this tiny, but perfect baby.

The anxiety. The baby was so small and frail, would she survive?

The uncertainty. Would she remember the promise made to her mother, to pretend that this little baby daughter was only a sister?

Hello! A bit more for today.
Bethany

That year had been a tough one for Madge, and indeed the entire Bettany family. During April Madge had been very tired and was feeling increasingly run down. This was initially blamed on the unseasonably humid weather that year. Her mother and father talked about sending the her and her twin brother Dick to England, so they could live in a healthier climate, and “get a proper education”. This had been proposed several times in the past, but had been put off until the children were older. Mr and Mrs Bettany realised that it would be selfish of them to risk their children's health by keeping them in the country, even if England did seem a long way away

As April became May, Madge became more run down, and suffered occasional bouts of sickness. It was decided that the family Doctor should visit, and assess her health with a view to her travelling to England. The provisional plan had been for the twins to travel to England towards the end of July with their Mother. The three of them could then spend some weeks visiting relatives and getting used to the English weather before starting at English boarding schools in the Autumn term when Mrs Bettany travelled back to her husband in India. They were, however, prepared to send Madge earlier or later if the Doctor so advised.

The Doctor was not a close friend, but he had known the Bettanys for many years. He examined Madge, and asked her a few questions. He was so surprised at his diagnoses that he went back through some of the tests and questions again to make sure. Eventually he had to explain to Mrs Bettany what was the cause of Madge's illness. It was not an interview he was looking forward to! Mrs Bettany was known to be a kind and gentle women, how could he find the right words to tell her that her twelve year old daughter appeared to be pregnant?

Hello! Sorry for not having updated this in weeks, I had the absolute final deadline for my phd last week, so was amazingly busy. I finally submitted my PhD thesis on Friday, so have some spare time again :)

Sorry this is a bit short, it is weird getting back into writting this having had a few weeks away.

The Dr went through everything calmly and patiently with Mrs Bettany. At first she couldn't take it in, she was totally stunned and sat staring at the Doctor for several minutes in disbelief. After all, Madge was only 12, and had had a very sheltered upbringing – how on Earth had this situation developed? However, Mrs Bettany was a very competent women, and she realised that dwelling on it would not help the family now. Her first task would be to speak with her daughter and find out just how this had happened and who the father would be. Then they could work out the best way to deal with the situation.

Madge remembered the resulting discussion with her mother well. To say it was a confusing time for Madge is something of an understatement. Previously, she had not had any idea as to how babies appeared. She knew of course that when two people had been married for a year or so, they were often blessed with a baby. Why she, a child herself and not a married women should also be blessed was a mystery to her. Her mother had had to explain many things that had shocked Madge, and caused her to grow up rather quickly. If only poor Madge had been able to see into the future, she would have seen that the next 12 months would cause her to grown up considerably more, and would not be at all easy for her. Fortunately, Madge was only aware of the current situation, which was more than enough for her to deal with at the moment.

Now that Mrs Bettany had explained the situation to Madge, she was very keen to find out exactly how this had happened. She thought through the different possibilities in her mind. Had one of their staff abused his position and got Madge into trouble? This did not seem likely, their staff were very loyal, and had worked for the Bettany's for many years and in any case there were currently no un-married male staff. Perhaps then Madge was considerably more grown than she had realised, maybe she had a boyfriend? Again this did not seem likely, Mrs Bettany had a very close relationship with her daughter, and anyway of the few families who lived nearby the only children of Madge and Dick's age were girls (a fact that Dick often complained about!). Maybe then the Doctor was wrong, and she wasn't carrying a child at all? But the Doctor had seemed very sure of his facts, and if Mrs Bettany was honest with herself Madge did seem to be showing many of the symptoms she herself had had before Madge and Dick had been born.

“Madge dear, I know this has come as a great shock to you, but there are some things we need to discuss. Can you tell me who the father is?”

Poor Madge was still looking rather stunned by it all, but inside her head thoughts were whirling. After her mother's explanations she had some understanding as to how the baby had come to be inside her and there was only one possibility as to who the father could be. Despite her current state of shock, Madge was a very clever girl, and she quickly realised that if her parents found out, the unborn-baby's father would lose them as friends, and he needed all the friends he had right now.

“No” Madge replied

“You can't tell me? You did understand what I explained to you about... um... well, how the baby came to be there?” Her mother asked feeling somewhat embarrassed but also puzzled, normally Madge was a very well behaved little girl.

“I can't tell you, Mummy I am sorry”

“Was it one of our staff Madge, did someone hurt you?”

“Oh no, of course not” Madge replied, shocked at the very idea.

“Well, who was it then darling?”

“I can't tell you Mummy, I really can't”

They talked for some time, but Madge refused to tell her mother who her unborn baby's father was. Eventually a rather frustrated Mrs Bettany decided that they needed to work out how to deal with the situation, continuing to question Madge was not going to get them anywhere. She was however very curious as to who the father was, and as to why Madge being so stubborn on not revealing his identity.

Hello! Thanks for reading this and for posting. Just a quick bit today, and a longer more interesting installment to come either tongiht or tomorrow when the identity of the father will be revealed.
Bethany

To understand Madge's reasoning, we must go back a few months to a weekend in March. Mr and Mrs Bettany were away for the weekend attending a dinner party held by one of Mr Bettany's colleagues. Such events were very infrequent amongst the Anglo-Indian community, and Mrs Bettany was very pleased for a rare chance to wear her favourite dress. On these rare occasions Madge and Dick were put on their honour to behave well, do everything the Ayah told them to, and to go to bed at their usual time. They would not be alone, as the children's Ayah, as well as the cook and house keeper lived in the family house.

After they had eaten their dinner on the Saturday night, Madge and Dick were sitting in their parent's drawing room. It was so unusual for them to have the house to themselves that they were making the most of the opportunity and pretending it was their Palace, and that they were the King and Queen. In all honesty, Dick felt himself a bit old for this kind of game but he knew Madge liked it. Dick was all for an easy life and tended to do what Madge asked him to – it was easier that way!

Hello again!
Finally as promised...
Bethany

They heard the doorbell ring, and their Ayah answer it, but paid little attention as they were involved in their game and it was unlikely to be anyone interesting. As it turned out, they were wrong. It was Mr Humphries, a friend of their parents. He often came to visit them for a weekend, as he was a good friend of My Bettany. Also, he had left behind his wife and three children in Europe and he missed them very much, being a part of the Bettany family made up for this loss somewhat. He had been based out in India on and off for some years, but had decided it was best for his wife and their children to stay in Europe. He felt the hot and humid Indian summers would be very trying for them, especially his beautiful wife who was prone to illness. So they lived with her family, and whenever Ted was in Europe he spent as much time with them as possible. When the Great War in Europe had started he became more and more concerned about their safety, but knew that it would not be easy for them to travel to India in such times. He often had great fun “helping” Dick with his train set and his proudest possession, a new Meccano set.

“Hello Uncle Ted, have you come to play with us while Mummy and Daddy are away?” Dick asked excitably

“Your parents are away?” This was something Ted hadn't expected, “Will they be back soon??” Ted asked hopefully had not looked very happy to start with, but at this news that they were out he looked even more miserable.

“They will be back tomorrow lunchtime, maybe morning” Madge replied, hoping to cheer him up a little.

Ted had made this visit to the Bettany household because he didn't know where else to turn. Earlier that day he had received news that his wife and two of their children had died, the third was very ill. He would be leaving India on Monday to travel back to Europe as quickly as he could manage to be with his remaining son. Overwhelmed by his grief, and unable to begin his journey until Monday (when he had a passage booked by train), he had set out to the Bettany's in the hope of comfort and advice. It was very distressing to realise that only Madge and Dick were in.

Dick was mainly concerned that his “Uncle” Ted would have seen him playing a silly game with Madge, and rushed to get out the Meccano set. Madge was a considerably more thoughtful and observant child, and was more concerned with how unhappy he looked. After a short conversation he told her of his great loss. Madge was horrified, her life so far had been very sheltered and unaffected by hardship or grief of any sort. She tried hard to think of what her mother or father would do if they were here, and remembered that they would always get guests a drink. She didn't think a drink would help her Uncle Ted very much, better it was all she could think to do.

Madge poured out a large glass of whiskey for Ted Humpheries, and once he had drank it poured him another. She tasted a little bit herself, but did not like how the whiskey burnt her throat and didn't try and more.

And so, to cut a long story short, in her effort to play the good hostess, Madge kept Mr Humphry's glass well topped up from her father's drinks cabinet. The drinks helped to drown his sorrows, and he became rather drunk, sufficiently so that he did not remember all of the evening when he eventually awoke the next morning, what he did not remember was how far he had gone in his need to be comforted. Madge did her best to fulfil her new role of Lady of the House by keeping him entertained and comforted. What she did not realise at the time was that some of what happened that evening would have such long lasting consequences.

Several months later when Madge discovered she was carrying a baby she was totally shocked by the news. Several years later when Ted Humphreis realised that he was the father of the small child apparently orphaned by the death of Mr and Mrs Bettany he was just as shocked.

I have been very naughty, and haven't updated this in a really long time. I will try and update more regularly, but will probably be a bit useless...

Once Mrs Bettany had assured herself that Madge was coping as well as could be expected by the news, she suggested that Madge might like to have a rest until supper time. Madge went up to her bedroom willingly, not only was she feeling very tired due to the pregnancy, she was also feeling rather shocked. The opportunity to have some peace and quiet while she thought things through was very welcome.

Meanwhile, downstairs, Mr Bettany had just arrived home from work, anxious to know whether the Doctor had diagnosed any thing seriously wrong with his young daughter.

“Hello Darling, how was your day?”

“Fine. Has the Doctor been to see Madge?” David Bettany replied anxiously

“Yes, he has, and you don't need to look so worried. It is nothing life threatening, quite the opposite I suppose when you think about it.” David stopped listening once he had been reassured that she wasn't going to die, and missed Margaret's nervous laugh that accompanied the end of the sentence.

“You don't know how relieved I am to hear that my dear. I have been so worried about her recently, especially after poor little Mary, you know...”

Mary had been David's younger sister and had sadly died aged 11. There was some similarity in appearance between sister and daughter. He had been very close to Mary, and had missed her terribly when she died. To make matters worse, he knew that the weak chest that had killed Mary was common among Bettany women, so he had reason to worry about Madge.

Margaret came across the room and sat next to her husband on the sofa. “I am sorry David, I had forgotten how hard this must be for you, you really don't need to worry about Madge though”

“Neither her nor Dick have really suffered from anything have they?” David Bettany tried to put Mary out of his mind, and enquired as to what the Doctor had diagnosed.

Hello, thanks for the comments.
Look at me, updating after a day, not 3 months :)

Margaret, not knowing quite how her husband would react, decided to come straight out with the information.

“The Doctor said that Madge is pregnant and that her baby will be born in December. She is healthy and the baby is healthy – so far – but we will have to look after her well. Oh, and she wont tell me who the father is, and the Doctor explicitly said we had to be gentle with her, so I cant force her to tell me.” Eventually she ran out of things to say, and turned to David, rather nervously to see his reaction.

“A baby? But Madge is only a baby herself, surely the Doctor made a mistake?”

“I am sorry love, but I think he is right. He carried out all the right tests, and asked all the right questions, and, well, she does have many of the same symptoms I had before she was born.” Margaret blushed, details of pregnancy were not things you discussed, even with your husband.

“But she is only just twelve, surely it cant even be possible?”

“It is David”

They sat there in silence for a while, David attempting to assimilate the information, and Margaret worrying about what they were going to do.

“Poor little Madge, how can someone have hurt her like this?”

“I know, and she wont even say who it was. Apparently it wasn't one of our staff, and no-one hurt her.” Margaret replied

“Hmm. Someone did hurt her, whether they meant to or not. My poor little girl.”

“David, we have to work out what we are going to do. If people find out, her life will be ruined. As will the child's I suppose”, she added as an afterthought.

I figured that Madge's father was a very kind and gentle man, mostly relieved that she isn't going to die. I think her mother is more cross, and more worried.
