Joey Maynard had been attending to little Phil and Geoff in the nursery. Cecil was having a nap, Felix was staying with a friend in England and Steve and Charles had gone down to the San with their Father who wanted some furniture moving and decorating in his offices. Anna was preparing Mittagessen. Michael had just returned from school with his brothers. It was hot weather and he wasn’t trusted to be let loose on decorating the San. Instead, he was to help Mama at home as the coadjutor was on holiday.

Michael trudged up to the nursery. Mama was reading ‘Hansel and Gretel’ to the tinies. Michael winced inwardly. He didn’t like that story. The thought of a woman eating little boys made his stomach turn. He squirmed. Mama looked up, “Oh hello Mike, are the phones still playing up?”

Mike nodded.

Joey tutted.

“Oh bother. Darling, could you do Mama a favour? The package in my study, wrapped up in brown paper on my desk, is a script for next year’s play at the Chalet School. Auntie Hilda wanted to see it today and she probably won’t have a moment to get over here and collect it. You know where Auntie Hilda’s office is? Could you take it over? If she isn’t there, Auntie Rosalie might be, you can always hand it to her. You never know, they might give you a biscuit!”

“Yes Mama”

Michael found the parcel easily enough and set off through the garden towards the Chalet School. As he reached the gate, he felt a sudden wave of nausea and there was a whirlwind of butterflies in his stomach.

Although he had a perfectly legitimate reason to be on the premises, he felt nervous. If he were caught, what would happen? A boy on the premises of a girl’s school! How dare he! Foxing into his sisters’ school like this, and as he was known as mischievous Mike, would his reason be believed? Wouldn’t the worst be thought of him? A horrid memory surfaced, from last holiday.

He had accidentally kicked his football into the school grounds, and had slipped through the gate to retrieve it. Unfortunately, Auntie Nell had caught him and scolded him. Her words rang in his ears, “You must want to be a girl and come to the Chalet School! It would mean wearing a frock, which we can easily arrange, which I will do if I catch you here again without permission!” Unhappily this had been related to his family, who had laughed at him. Margot had begged for him to be put into a skirt!

Michael felt more sick at this prospective humiliation. He suddenly felt like a hunted animal. What if he were taken prisoner! He knew how angry girls could get, he had seen his sisters in their rages. Fear gripped him. The story of ‘Hansel and Gretel’ going through his mind. What if he were punished before the school? Boys get caned don’t they? What if…

He heard voices! Girls voices! Coming this way! Terrified, he hid behind some dense foliage, feeling more and more that he would be the dish of the day if he were caught.

Goosebumps pricked his flesh and he felt very self conscious in his short trousers. He squirmed. The girls passed, looking very relaxed and happy. Michael shuddered as her saw the dresses. He felt so small. Arms and legs rubbing together, he cuddled up into a ball, hugging the parcel to himself.

The parcel! It was obvious he was delivering a parcel! Why it even had Auntie Hilda’s name on! He could worry about the return journey later.

He ran as fast as he could, dodging girls and mistresses on the way. He saw the French windows of Auntie Hilda’s study and made for them as if his life depended on them. He looked through the windows. Auntie Hilda was not in! Now he had to find Auntie Rosalie.

“Michael!”

He heard a voice…

Thanks, Phil. I'm sorry that he is made to feel silly visiting the school when he lives so close by and his mother was the 1st pupil.

Poor Mike - if he's feeling like that about the teasing though, it's actually closer to bullying.

Poor Mike. I always thought he got a rough time of it in the books.

I can certainly imagine that a lone boy would feel well out of place amongst all those girls! Poor Mike.

Aw poor Mike! I can just see a poor boy in a girls school! It's a shame he has to feel the way he does though as he does have close ties with the school! Is there more? Thank you very much! Very Happy

“Auntie Nell!” Michael was struck dumb. He felt so sick. Miss Wilson was immediately concerned. She spied the package for Miss Annersley.

“Have you come to deliver that to Auntie Hilda? That’s very kind of you. I’m afraid she is going to be a bit of a while. Would you like a drink and a biscuit? We may be able to find one of your sisters! Shall we find Len? Would you like that?”

Michael cheered at this prospect. He was ushered into the Head’s Office and Len was sent for. Len appeared and was amazed to see Mike.

“Michael has very kindly brought us something from your mother.” Began Miss Wilson.

“Script for next year’s play.” Michael had found his voice.

“How charming! We shall enjoy that!” Was Miss Wilson’s reply.

Mike, subdued, sat down to a drink and a biscuit with Len. Maybe things weren’t too bad. He departed, thanking for the drink and biscuit and ran at full pelt back to Freuedesheim.

The reason why he was so subdued and flushed looking, was a mystery to Len and Miss Wilson for the rest of their days.

Poor Mike - maybe now he'll see there's no need to be scared of the CS.

Thanks Phil
