This one has been in my head for a while and now I'm finally putting my ideas to paper! It's set in the summer holidays following Prefects

'Thank you for letting us stay Aunt Wanda,' said Len as she embraced one of her mother's oldest friends.

'Think nothing of it, you are all most welcome and always will be,' Wanda responded with a smile that showed that she was still the beauty she had been at the Chalet School all those years ago.

'Excuse me Aunt Wanda, but how long did you say it would take to travel to the cottage?' asked Margot meekly for she had forgotten the information during their wonderful stay in the Austrian capital.

'It should take one and a half hours,' replied their hostess cheerfully, thinking about the beautiful property in northern Austria that her family had inherited several years ago.

'First we take the train, then a bus,' teased Ted Grantley, the triplets great friend who had joined them on their summer adventure.

Hugs and well wishes finally complete the triplets and Ted set off for the station.

'I will miss Vienna,' Con mused as she watched the sights flash by the window of the taxi.

'Well, I'm sure you'll soon forget about it judging from the description of the cottage!' Ted joked.

'And there'll be plenty of time to write, Con,' Len put in with a sisterly smile.

'I do hope so,' Con answered before turning back to the passing city.

Good start - so they'll be just the four of them then...

Thanks Laura.

'Surely this can't be the place,' said Len, somewhat overawed by what she saw.

'Well, the farmer told us this was it. He said its the only place for some distance so we couldn't miss it,' put in Margot matter of factly.

'Cottage?' Ted scoffed referring back to Wanda's description. 'I rather think its more than that!'

Indeed it was. Wanda's cottage was in fact a large two storey house in the style typical to the region. On entering the girls found themselves in an impressive entrance hall with doors leading off and a wide staircase to the back. They were all quiet for some time as they explored the downstairs rooms.

'Oh look!' Con exclaimed from the kitchen which immediately brought in the other three.

'Goodness! What a feast!' Len cried as she gazed over the hamper on the kitchen table. Inside were delicious cheeses, meats, fruits, breads, pastries, tinned goods and all that could be thought of.

'And look what else there is,' Ted said mischievously after she had delved into the depths of the hamper.

'What is there, Ted?' asked the others.

Ted moved aside some of the items in the hamper and slowly lifted out what she found.

'I say, is that wine?' said Con wide eyed.

'Wine? But...' Len began.

'Mary Helena Maynard, it is our last summer together. And we are officially adults now,' Margot interrupted.

Len's look of concern relaxed into a smile. 'Yes, you're right. Let's find some glasses!'

Having successfully found the glasses the four sat down to a wonderful evening meal, supplemented by the wine. Light soon turned into dark as time passed.

'What a wonderful evening,' Len declared.

'A toast,' said Ted raising her glass.

'Oh yes, a toast. Where's my glass?' replied Con somewhat slowly.

'It's here. Con, I do believe you are a little drunk!'

'I am not. Here's my glass.'

'A toast to us.'

All four glasses clinked but only three took a sip of wine.

'Con you've definitely had too much wine,' Len said with a shake of the head.

Con turned to look at her with wide eyes. 'There's someone at the window.'

Love Wanda's description of a cottage! Glad that Len was persuaded that they are now adults (though actually as they are under 21 they are not classed as such).

But who is at the window???

Thanks Laura.

This is just what Len needs, a decent break away from the rest of the family to relax in.

Don't leave us wondering who's at the window for too long!

'There's no one there, Con,' said Ted as she and Margot put their torches away. 'We've walked all around the building. If there was someone there they're long gone.'

'Well,' Con hesitated looking at the emplty wine glass. 'Maybe I have had too much to drink. Perhaps it was just my imagination.'

'Don't worry about it Con,' Len said putting her arm around her sister. 'We all make mistakes. I think now perhaps would be a good time to retire for the night.'

The others agreed, but while Ted, Con and Margot made their way upstairs Len stayed back to make sure she locked the door.

*****

Con was the first to wake next morning. She hadn't slept well following the events from the evening before and decided to take some time exploring more of the house before the others awoke. Slipping in to her dressing gown and slippers she quietly made her way down the stairs, though the stairs let out loud creaks on several occasions.

On walking past the kitchen door she decided to get a glass of water. Who knows how long she would be away in such a huge building! A childish excitement suddenly grew in Con and she giggled at the thought of past escapades the girls had had back at school. But her excitement disappearred for when she opened the kitchen door she saw that the contents of the hamper significantly reduced and the back door wide open.

Con quickly ran over to the door, intending to bolt it shut, for she knew that she hadn't been imagining things last night, but something stopped her in her tracks.

Outside on the grass was a small figure sat down in a heap. Though Con couldn't see their face she knew the person was crying from the muffled sobs she could hear.

This person could have been the thief, but they were obviously in distress. Con took a deep breath and strode over to the figure.

'I say, are you alright?' she asked once in English, then quickly repeating the question in German.

The person lifted their head slowly and Con was shocked to see the face of a small girl, no older than eleven looking back at her with tearful eyes.
'I don't speak German very well,' replied the girl quietly in heavily accented tones in that language.

'That's not a problem,' Con answered with a smile as she sat down on the grass, determined to get to the bottom of why such a small foreign girl was sitting in the garden at half past six in the morning!

'My name's Con. Would you like to have some breakfast with me? I'm staying here,' she said noticing the scraps of meat and cheese which lay scattered on the grass around them.

The girl nodded shyly and the two of them got up headed for the house.

Needless to say the other three were quite surprised by what awaited them at breakfast that morning.

'Morning Con,' was Len's cheery greeting as she marched in, though she soon stopped in her tracks.

'This is Petra, Len,' Con informed her sister as Margot gaped at the sight of the child gulping down a glass of milk.

Len shook her self to regain her composure before before sitting down at the table opposite the guest.

'Hello Petra, pleased to meet you,' Len smiled, but all she got in response was a stare from blue eyes that seemed to pierce right through you. Len shivered.

'I need your help with the breakfast Len, could you come over here please?' Con called from the otherside of the kitchen.

'Certainly Con. Excuse me please, Petra,' Len announced, leaving the child to stare after her.

'I found her in the garden, she was desperately upset and I couldn't just leave her,' Con explained in a whisper.

Len nodded. 'But what about her parents? They can't be too far away. Have you asked her?'

'I've tried but she doesn't speak any English, and her German isn't too strong either,' was the reply.

'Hmm, but if she doesn't speak German, why is she in Austria? Where has she come from?'

Con shrugged her shoulders, picked up the plate of bread and cheese she had been preparing and made her way back to the table. Len glanced over at Petra, who, throughout the entire conversation had continued to stare at her hosts.

Why not classed as adults? Enquiring minds want to know

At that time you were not classed as an adult until age 21, needed parents' permission to marry, couldn't vote etc. Didn't drop to 18 until 1970 in UK - and was reason my parents didn't get married until 8th October 1960 (my Dad's 21st birthday) - so my Grandfather was not given the opportunity to refuse permission!

I knew it was 1970, because my grandparents couldn't stop my parents getting married in February. :)
