#1: The Gloaters Author: Uto PostPosted: Tue Oct 26, 2004 1:19 pm

Sleep came easily that night, the sleep that normally comes only to those with a clear conscience, which as far as The Gloater was concerned she had. However, the Good Fairy of Drabble Land had other ideas on the subject, and this particular night would see The Gloater’s comeuppance. She had decided on a course of action which would normally be the province of the Wicked Witch, but she had been conspicuous by her absence on the Board of late. The plan would give The Gloater anything but a quiet night’s rest.
At first she descended into a deep slumber, plans for her own drabble swirling around in her head, prompted by her drive around the M25. However, with the Good Fairy hovering over her unseen, they began to swirl faster and faster, her characters taking on a life of their own, outside the confines of her plot. Into this whirling soup was added the plots and characters of the drabbles she had previewed. Joey Maynard, watching what might have been had she never been born; Leonie of Arilinn Tower posing as a Mistress at the Chalet School. The Gloater groaned in her sleep, but did not waken, and the Fairy smiled gently. The whirling and spinning died down, and The Gloater woke up – or she thought she did.

She was in a very strange place, not her own room, that was rather like a theatre, except that she wasn’t in a seat but somehow hanging in mid-air to watch events unfold. What she found herself watching was the result of the pea-soup mixing of the drabbles she for which had had a preview, and nothing really made sense. She saw the matrix gun explode in Barr’s hands, but he was surrounded by the guests at Joey’s surprise party, though since laran did not appear in that drabble, no one was hurt, and it seemed to be only a brilliant flash of light. She saw the alternative lives of the Chalet School characters, without Jo Bettany/Maynard’s influence on their lives, but nothing made sense, for the wrong things happened to the wrong people. Then she became aware of the figure standing off to one side, gloating. Gloating because she was in this predicament, not because she had seen a preview, and she realised who it was with a sick sense of dread. Matey!! Not the Matey of the Chalet School, beloved tyrant of numberless school girls. No! This was the Matey of the RCS! Her own incarnation of that redoubtable lady. L..The Gloater almost screamed, though she choked it back – she was after all, no spineless jellyfish.
“You see what happens when you gloat, my dear,” said the apparition.

Very wise Carolyn!!!!

All The Gloater could do was stare in total horror, for she knew only too well just what this person was capable of. She remembered everything all too clearly and braced herself for what might come. Out of the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of someone else, sitting on a silver broomstick, golden hair cascading over her shoulders, but this vision disappeared very quickly, As if afraid of being seen too clearly. The Gloater looked back at Matey, but she too had gone. In her place was a figure she knew as well as she knew herself. A tall woman with brown wavy hair drawn off her face and secured in a knot at the back of her head. The blue-grey eyes gazed at her steadily, and she was unable to read any expression in the face. Beside her appeared someone else, the one person she would have expected to see with the first. This woman had a head of white hair, shot through with the chestnut colour of her youth. Her face was far easier to read, being brim-full of wicked laughter, which she swiftly hid as she caught The Gloater looking at her.
“My dear, we cannot always protect you from Matron,” said Hilda gently. “As you know, we have responsibilities and problems to deal with in the Real Chalet School.”
“A little matter of a potential flu epidemic I believe,” said Nell. “You do believe in giving us plenty of practice in problem-solving, don’t you?”
“Now you know we decided not to mention that Nell,” said Hilda. “The poor child has enough to worry about as it is.” It was possible to see that Hilda’s eyes were now full of sympathetic laughter, though her face remained grave as befitted the Head of a large and prestigious school; one moreover who had survived all the vicissitudes that had been thrown at her in the last year. “Perhaps I ought to thank you before we leave, my dear. I really had no idea that I was as strong as I seem to be. Bear in mind that trouble can bring out all the best features in a person and all their strengths, if only they will let it. I will leave you with the words that Madame gave to the School the last term we were in Tyrol. ‘Be brave’”

The Gloater closed her eyes as the two Heads faded from sight, wondering what would happen next. Characters and plots continued to swirl around her, disorientating her and stopping her from thinking properly. At one point she thought she saw the grey other-worldly shape of a Swiss mountain, and she wibbled at the thought of what that place contained. However, it vanished as quickly as it had come and she relaxed a little. The threat of that awful place put the rest of the experience into perspective, and at last she felt as if it might be possible to follow the admonition to ‘be brave’.

Suddenly she felt herself diving forwards, down, down, down, feeling like she supposed a bungee jumper felt before hitting the bottom of the drop, but she could feel no straps, nothing to halt her downward plunge. The darkness lifted gradually and she felt herself slowing, till she was hovering in the corner of a room that she knew very well, though she had never actually seen it before.

Quote:
“Dad!” shrieked Flavia, and, flinging the rest of her biscuit to one side, she ran straight into his arms. “I’m here, chiya,” he whispered into her hair. “I’m here.” He looked up over the top of his step-daughter’s red head and met the suddenly knowing eyes of Leonie. Detaching himself from Flavia- who was now ravenous and had gone to rescue her biscuit- he moved forward and bowed. “Lady Leonie. I did not think I would find you here. You lend us grace, vai domna.”

Flavia’s shriek seemed to go right through her, splitting her head open, lighting the spark in her brain that her red hair suggested she had. Now she could hear the underlying thoughts behind the speech, and they were far louder than the spoken ones, echoing through her head. She shivered, feeling suddenly feverish, though not it must be said, with any strain of flu!
“Threshold sickness,” said a voice below her. “There is someone coming down with threshold sickness who is dangerously older than is normal to experience it.”

On Darkover (see Lisa_T’s Keeper at the CS drabble), threshold sickness often affects persons coming into their laran – usually around puberty, but it can be later (e.g. if powers will be unusually strong, or are awakened by a catalyst telepath.) It may include lots of nasty physical symptoms (fever & chills, hallucinations, extreme headaches) as well as uncontrolled flashes of laran gifts such as telepathy, precognition, etc. It can be fatal. But not, I trust, in this case. *has great faith in the Powers of Lesley* (though she may be destined to suffer as much as Hilda & Nell Neutral .... What next, Uto?? Star Wars)

Please excuse the spreeing!! Last bit.

‘No way! Not me! I’m out of here!’ the thoughts swept through her mind, and she suddenly found herself running across a field, fleet as a young deer. Ahead she could see a stout fence across the way. Inside the fence were a number of peculiar contraptions – uprights with an arm stretching out and a rope hanging down over the fence – and she wondered what they were for. The other side of the fence was a void. It seemed the field ended abruptly, and she suddenly realised that it was a cliff. The ropes were abseiling lines, put there to help the CBBers down. She tried to stop herself running but couldn’t. The fence loomed ever closer until she slammed full tilt into it, though she was surprised to find that she was unaffected in any way by the force of her landing. The fence bent away from her and she looked down the side of the cliff. In fact it was more of an overhang than a cliff, and she could see, way below her, what she guessed were trampolines, set to catch the unwary. Around the trampolines were little clumps of chairs and settees, each with its own gigantic fridge. They were transparent, and she could see that they were full of bottles (her sight seemed miraculous considering how far down the bottom of the cliff was!). ‘Baileys’ she thought. ‘Given this is for CBBers it has to be Baileys.’
The fence swung back again then, and she turned to leave, only to find her path blocked by a number of women, all smiling sweetly at her.
“Oh no you don’t! You’re going over, just like we all have,” said one.
The group moved forward until she was hard up against the fence, and then she found herself being tipped up and over, and realised that one of the ones doing the final tipping had earlier taken a cliff at a run and jumped off as hard as she could. Then she was falling towards the trampolines, managing to keep her back down. She hit hard and bounced – straight back to the top of the cliff.
“Back for more?” This came from one of the group who seemed to be sitting down, and The Gloater saw that she was sitting on an old-fashioned broomstick, a big black hat hanging in front of her. Without waiting to be ‘helped’ The Gloater jumped by herself and this time her bounce back wasn’t so hard, so that she was able to control her bounces and slowly stop them. Sighing with relief, she climbed down, sat herself on one of the settees and opened the fridge. She had been right, it was full of Baileys and she poured herself a generous slug. There were also some huge boxes of chocolates, to which she helped herself. Then she sat back with a sigh of pure pleasure. This had been worth it all.
The next thing she knew she was in her own bed and the sun was shining through the curtains. ‘Was it a dream?’ she thought. ‘Or did all that really happen? Would they really push me over a cliff?’

Your wish is my command Carolyn!!!! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

The following night another Gloater drifted off to sleep as usual, the sleep of the innocent. She had no idea, of course, of the dreams of her namesake, but the very fact of gloating during that day had made her vulnerable to retribution. To her absolute horror she found herself in a Post-Holocaust world, populated almost entirely of clones of Matey. She knew – none better – that there must be one other person somewhere, but she had no idea where to start looking. Her main objective was to avoid Matey!!!!! The scene around her was horrifying, for the clones had reproduced Matey as she had been at the end of her life – and the sight was enough to send anyone completely mad. Poor C..Gloater screamed. It was one thing to write about this, but quite another to experience it. Still she thought, when she could think again, at least I don’t have to face the Maynards!!!!!

She started to run, and once she had started her feet took wing and ran of their own accord. Her dazed mind thought of Menolly running from Thread and that made it worse. The land started to slope downwards and still her feet carried her forwards, faster and faster until the Mateys began to blur into a streaky mass. The slope got steeper until she began to slide helplessly. She could see nothing around her to focus on, for she was still moving far too fast. At the bottom of the slope was a huge bath tub full of water which had come straight off a Swiss glacier. In fact, there was still ice floating in it. At the last minute she managed to swerve and miss the huge tub, sighing in relief as the slope levelled out and she slowed to a halt. She seemed to be in an area devoid of Mateys, for which she was thankful, and she climbed to her feet to look around her properly. She was on a wide plateau half way up a mountain and in the distance she could see a chalet, nestling amongst the pines that covered much of the area. Shrugging her shoulders, she walked towards the building. It was clearly the Chalet School, for she could see girls in gentian blue milling around outside. What surprised her was that she had thought that she was post-holocaust, so that this should no longer exist.
Suddenly her thoughts were interrupted by twin screams from behind and above her.
“Mateys! Run!!!” came a voice unmistakably V….’s. She had certainly been a member of the board when that particular drabble had been written. C… could hear the sound of running footsteps and then the familiar sliding as the two Gloaters hit the steep slope. They were not so quick as C…, for neither managed to avoid the enormous bath. They landed in the icy water with an enormous splash that cascaded water in all directions and soaked the watcher from head to toe. Spluttering at the icy onslaught, she helped V…. and K.. out of the tub and pointed to the school ahead of them.
“That seems to be the Chalet School,” she said. “There are girls there, so presumably we have left the Mateys behind. Whether these girls also belong to the Holocaust drabble I have no idea. I sincerely hope not!”
V…. shuddered. “So do I,” she said with a great deal of feeling.
“I haven’t got round to reading that,” said K… Was it so very bad?”
C….. and V…. just looked at her.

Then they turned and walked towards the school buildings, keeping a wary eye out as they went. They all failed to notice the Ha-ha ( a steep step in the landscape designed to keep animals away from a stately home without blocking the view) ahead of them and consequently all three fell over the edge and landed in a heap at the bottom. K.. in particular was horrified to see the disembodied head of L….. floating in the air rather like that belonging to the Cheshire Cat.
“Ha ha!” she said. “That was fun. Shall we do it again?”
The three found themselves at the top of the small cliff again, where they found themselves spun around before being toppled over the edge.
“This seems rather familiar,” commented K… “I’m sure I’ve come across this sort of thing before.”
“We have!” grunted C……. “Your bedtime drabble. Though why we should all suffer for it I have no idea!”
“Because you’re here and it’s fun,” said the head. “You know how much I enjoy watching CBBers falling off cliffs. That’s why you wrote your little story, isn’t it?” she smiled sweetly at K… “And the rest of you are as bad. I saw you all laughing!”
“You were laughing as hard yourself,” said V….”True,” said L…’s head as it faded to a cheesy grin.
“Has she gone?” asked K.. looking around fearfully.
“Looks like it. Come on, let’s see if we can get out of this place.” Replied C…. pulling the other two to their feet.
They set off again and before long had arrived at the Chalet School. Everything looked calm and peaceful, but the three had learnt to mistrust everything about this place. They came out onto the road beside a building that they assumed had to be Freudesheim, and almost bumped into the owner. The huge earphones of hair over her ears looked as odd as they had expected, and because of these monstrosities they were easily able to identify her as Jo Maynard.
“Noooooooo!!!” cried C….., and she fled as fast as she could, until she fell over a protruding root and went head over heels. The next thing she knew she was waking up in bed, wondering if it had all been a dream.

The other two were equally badly spooked, especially as Jo was smiling kindly at them. The ran off in the opposite direction, which unfortunately led up to the school. It was clearly outside lesson time for the grounds were flooded with blue-clad girls who were laughing and giggling. To their absolute horror they all looked remarkably similar. The hair colour ranged from very pale blond through red-gold to deep black, with skin tones to match, but the features were clearly from the same family. It was the ones with the jet black hair that gave them the answer. The black eyes and pointed face were all Joey. The screech was louder and wilder this time, which had the effect of bringing the two Gloaters to the attention of the family. (I hesitate to use the term offspring for them, since I have been firmly informed that that is COPYRIGHT, and I would hate to be shut down for infringement! Besides, this family constitute the whole school, without any murders having taken place.)
“Strangers!” The howl came from 400 throats simultaneously as the girls responded with one mind and voice. V…. and K.. ran for their lives, over the playing fields towards the gate that led out into the field beyond, normally used for skiing, but now a grassy meadow. However, this was to change, for the temperature dropped suddenly and the sun was obscured by a dark cloud.
“I don’t like the look of that sky,” gasped V….. “It looks like snow.”
“Can’t be! It was summer a minute ago.” K.. was nearly done and slowed to a stop, even though both could see the pack closing behind them.
“There’s a cow shed over there,” said V….. “Let’s make for that. It’ll be shelter, and the pack can’t follow for long, their not dressed for it.
Even as she spoke the snow began to fall, first a few flakes and then harder and harder till they could hardly see the hut they were making for. The sounds of the hunt faded behind them as they reached the safety of the shelter and they thankfully sank down onto the floor of the hut to regain their breath.

So glad you didn't break copyright...that could have had dreadful consequences, esp in that particular version of the school!! Twisted Evil Love the snow in summer and the handy hut!

I do hope Lesley appreciates the double whammy for someone tonight!!!! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

“What tired you so quickly?” asked V…., panting slightly.
“I think it must be the several pounds of chocolate that have appeared in my pockets,” replied K.. with an air of bemusement. “At least we can get a hot drink, Chalet style.”
“That’s what you think! Can you see a fireplace anywhere, cos I can’t! And as for anything to burn, there is absolutely nothing here. No cupboards, no rubbish or old furniture. Nothing!”
They watched glumly as the snow piled up around the hut, higher and higher. They huddled together to keep warm, nibbling on the chocolate, as the snow crept up over the one small window and the room got dark. After a time they realised that the snow settling on the rood was getting very thick, for the roof began to creak and groan under the weight. The watched in alarm as the roof began to bow under the enormous pressure above it. Gradually it sagged towards them, lower and lower, and they watched in horror, sliding to the corner in the hopes of escaping the worst. The with a roar it all caved in on them and the world went dark.

In two separate parts of Britain two people sat up in bed with a start, looking around them wildly. Where was the hut and the snow? The relief when they realised that it had all been a dreadful dream was colossal.

G.. was suddenly aware that she was awake, but she wasn’t where she expected to be. Certainly not in her bed in Aberystwyth, nor at home in Saltash. She was standing on the station platform belonging to a rack and pinion railway that her mind told her had to be in the Alps. It was daylight, and it had been snowing, quite heavily too, for there was a thick layer on the platform that hadn’t been trampled flat or shovelled away. She walked carefully along the platform until she was clear of the station buildings and looked around her. Mountains reared up in all directions, encrusted with snow, though the sun was shining brightly. Finding herself less cold than she would have expected she looked down at what she was wearing and gasped. A blue ski suit with scarlet trimmings told her all she wanted to know. A large blue shawl was crossed over her chest and fastened behind in true Chalet School fashion, and she wore a thick woollen hat and gloves.
“Well,” she thought to herself. “I might as well make the best of this and explore. I wonder what I’m doing here.” Then it dawned on her. She’d been gloating, and it was becoming rather unsafe to do that these days. “Oh help! I could be in my own drabble!” she thought in panic, remembering just what she had done to the school. “Now, do I explore a bit to see the school, or do I wait for a train to take me down the mountain before that avalanche.”
It was very quiet, with not a soul to be seen, and she remembered that the school was actually on holiday and the powers that be were probably in Italy looking at the site for the new school. If that’s the case I could have a look around,” she thought. “No one died in the avalanche that wiped out the school buildings, so I should be safe enough. Anyway, this has to be a dream.”
So she set off up the road that led away from the station towards a group of buildings in the distance. As she drew nearer she could hear the sound of children playing in the snow, having a fine snowball fight from the sounds. The screams and yells made her look apprehensively at the mountains overlooking the Platz in case they triggered the coming catastrophe, but all was safe. The next entrance led to the school itself and she walked up the path to the silent buildings, feeling greatly daring. There was not a sound, the place seemed to be deserted, so she felt a little braver and tried to peer in at the windows. The rooms were dark, but she was able to make out the neat rows of folding desks, the lockers lining the far wall, and the clean blackboard attached to the end wall. The doors were locked she discovered when she tried them, which was just as well, considering the wholesale destruction to come. Round the back of the building she found the French windows that led into the Head’s study. They were locked of course, but she could see the room quite clearly. The desk set to catch the afternoon light from the windows, the fireplace neatly laid with the makings of a cheerful fire, with cosy chairs arranged on either side. The cupboard where the small stove was kept for the hot drinks the Head dispensed from time to time. It was all there, and she gazed in like a child looking in a the windows of a sweet shop that they had no money to shop at.
Then she became aware of a sound, far away but growing louder, like the rumbling of an underground train entering a station. It grew louder, and her horrified mind told her what it was. Avalanche! And the Chalet School was going to be as good as obliterated! She turned and ran, thankful for the nailed boots which were part of the uniform she wore. And behind the rumbling turned to a roaring noise that filed the air.

G.. fled round the school, knowing that it would be destroyed and ran across the gardens towards Freudesheim, as that would at least more or less survive. She heard the sound of an engine, and remembered that Anna had got the family away in Minnie, with Mike driving. Too late for that then. Then she felt her hand grabbed by someone else.
“Quick, this way.”
She swung around obediently, catching enough of a glimpse to identify her rescuer before the edge of the avalanche caught them both and they went tumbling head-over-heels. Their hands were pulled apart by the force of the snow, even though they were very near the edge - had almost escaped in fact. When they finally came to a halt, G.. had just enough strength left to reach out for the hand she could see lying on top of the snow before she lost consciousness.
Her mind told her something was wrong even as she began to return to her senses. It was hot! Very hot! Far too hot for the Gornetz Platz at any time of year, let alone in winter. Her eyes felt crusted, but she forced them open. Beside her lay her would-be rescuer, and she was pleased to see that she had been right. This was the original Gloater, the one who had seen previews of the first of a series of drabbles that gripped the board. R…… was still unconscious, lying on her back with her arms flung wide, her dark hair flung in all directions. G.. pulled herself upright and looked around. They were in the desert, so she knew which drabble she was in now, and she didn’t want to be here. Beside her R…… moaned and stirred, slowly returning to the world around her.
“Where are we?” she muttered. “Did we escape the snow?”
G.. groaned at the corny phrase. “Can you see any snow?” she asked. “Looks more like desert to me. Africa in fact. I’m not sure that I wouldn’t rather have taken my chances in the Alps than end up here, if we’re where I think we are.”
R…… sat up and looked around her. In the distance she could see a town and people.
“I suppose we’d better head for civilisation,” she said. “We can’t stay here and at least there’s someone there who ought to be able to help us. Especially with you in that uniform.”
“Don’t be daft! They wore brown then remember! Gentian blue won’t mean a thing to her. You’re right about going to the town though. We’ll need food and water and some sort of shelter.”
“I don’t understand what I’m doing here,” said R……, who was still a little dazed.
“Nor do I, but standing around discussing it won’t help. Let’s get out of this sun.”
The two gloaters turned and made for the town, hoping that Matey hadn’t already left.

By the time they arrived they were hot, dirty and very, very thirsty. As they entered the narrow streets, full of people from many different lands, all shouting and, it must be said, swearing in a rich mixture of languages they began to feel a trifle apprehensive. It was one thing to write about the place, but another to experience it. It was a scruffy town, and they began to feel distinctly itchy. They wandered around, keeping their eyes open for Rick’s Café Americain, as they knew that that place was the centre of the drama, and where they would be most likely to find Matey. They hesitated to go when they did find it, for they were well brought up, and they place looked more than a little unsavoury.
“We won’t get anywhere out here,” said R…… at last. “Come on, Matey might already be in there.”
“I don’t want to be awkward, but … er…. How will we recognise her if she is in there?” G.. was feeling distinctly unsettled, and it was showing. The shock of finding herself threatened by an avalanche and then, in the blink of an eye, to be transported into the desert, would be unsettling to most people, but R…… felt herself ready for anything. This was her drabble, and one of her favourite films.
“Come on. Be brave,” she said and marched into the café. The noise was appalling, with people shouting to be heard. The piano was silent and deserted. They made their way to the bar, looking around them as they went. Sitting on a bar stool was a woman in a linen suit that still managed to look crisp even in the enervating heat of north Africa.
“Bet you that’s Matey,” said R…… as the both spotted her together.
“Who else could it be?” giggled G…
R…… was used to dealing with all sorts of people in her job and was confident now as she walked up to the woman.
“Excuse me, are you Gwynneth Lloyd?” she asked.
“Yes I am, and I would like to know what you think you are doing bringing that child into a place like this. A schoolgirl! You should be ashamed of yourself young woman.”
G.. giggled again. That confirmed that this was indeed Matey, and she found it very funny that not only should she be mistaken for a schoolgirl, but that R…… should get into trouble over her.
“I’ve left school Matey,” she said, and then realised that she had let the cat out of the bag and gasped. They should not have known the nickname.

Has Uto gone into hibernation?

#128:  Author: Uto PostPosted: Thu Nov 18, 2004 4:42 pm

Just a little bit, as I have been rather busy lately.

“Should I know you?” demanded the school domestic tyrant in awful tones.
R…… smiled at her. “No, of course not Miss Lloyd. We know of you from .. er … mutual friends.”
Another, rather more muted, giggle came from G… She had, after all, only just left school. R…… frowned warningly at her and she subsided. Matey was still highly suspicious of them both, especially in this place and at this time. No one here was what they seemed, even herself in some ways, and these two, while not showing any signs of being dangerous, were acting in a rather strange manner.
The two Gloaters were looking around the bar, R…… with more interest than G… It was just like the film set, which was what she would have expected, but the people were infinitely more menacing than even the film had made them seem. “I suppose it’s because I’m actually here,” she thought with a shiver. A figure loomed up beside them and they turned to see the tall figure of the owner of the bar.
However, he took no notice of the two girls, spoke a few words to Matey that they failed to hear and moved away.
“It is not safe to be out on the streets in the evening,” said Matey. “If you have rooms I suggest you go back to them now. If not here is the address of my hotel. We can talk in the morning if that is what you want."
“That’s fine by me,” said R……. “Come on G.., let’s get a good night’s sleep. I think we deserve that at least.”
They headed out of the bar, and were walking in the direction of Matey’s hotel when disaster struck. There was the sound of shouting behind them, in German, and then they heard the sound of running feet. The shrank back against the wall, but the running figure still nearly ploughed into them.
“Halt!” the shout came again, ignored by the running man, and then a fusillade of bullets came whipping towards them. They ducked, but G.. gave a funny little gasp and slumped to the floor, blood pouring from her body.

R……, lying prone on the ground beside G.., watched in disbelief as G..’s body faded from sight. Then the realisation struck her that she was on her own in a hostile drabble of her own making and she started to shake.
G.. opened her eyes slowly, not sure what she would find. To her relief she was in her bed and a quick check reassured her that she was unharmed. Had it been a dream? She wasn’t sure, but if it had been, why had she dreamt that R…… was in it with her? If it wasn’t, why had she been in her own drabble first and then in R……’s? It was beyond her, but she hoped whatever the answer was that R…… was all right.
R.. was dreaming, she knew that. The guidelines she had been struggling with at work were churning around in her brain and preventing her from sleeping properly. Into the churning mass her drabble about Francie was inserting tentacles that made the whole thing even more mind-boggling than it was in real life. Suddenly she woke up to find herself sitting on the floor, having she thought, fallen out of bed. Then it began to dawn on her that she wasn’t in her room, she was outside, and it was hot - too hot for the night time she was used to and far, far too hot for November in England. There was the distant sound of running feet fading into the distance, and the far-off sound of shouts, punctuated by what sounded like shots. It was very dark, but she became aware that somebody was beside her, lying on the ground shaking.
“Who’s that?” she asked. “What’s the matter?”
The figure looked up at her. “You’re not G..,” she said. “G.. was shot I think, and vanished. Who’re you?”
“I ought to know that voice,” said R… “I’m R.., by the way.”
“R..? From the CBB? I’m, R……. What are you doing here?”
“I don’t know. I was dreaming and then I woke up here, wherever here is.”
“Casablanca,” said R…… bitterly. “And believe me, you don’t want to be here!”

*grins* Well, I know the five places to hit an attacker, I know how to use a broadsword, I have a fair idea of how to use a gun (though frankly, I'm the last person who should ever, EVER be given one - the safest place you could stand would be in front of me because that'd be the one place the bullet wouldn't be going...) and I'm deadly with a hockeystick. Oh, and I have sharp elbows. And, randomly, I can do the full stunt stairs fall thing. Though I'm not sure THAT is exactly any help right now. Ray *a woman of many dubious talents*

“Then we’d better get out hadn’t we? I don’t know how I got here, but if we landed here with no warning we may get out of here the same way.”
“Wishful thinking!

The two looked around carefully, but it was very quiet now; the trouble seemed to have moved off. They crept carefully away, and R…… led the way to the hotel room that she and G.. had taken. Once inside they both relaxed a little more, feeling safer here than on the streets. They slept as well as they could, and woke feeling a little brighter. In the harsh light of the sun it was hard to remember the dangers of the night before as they set off for Matey’s hotel.
“Who is this, and what happened to the other girl,” demanded the domestic tyrant as she let them into her room.
“I’m not sure Miss Lloyd,” said R…… respectfully. “She disappeared last night, at the same time that R.. joined me.”
Matey looked at the couple in patent disbelief, but allowed the subject to drop.
“The first priority is to get you both out of this town,” she said. “That will be easier said than done. Most of the people here want to leave, but you need all sorts of documents which I don’t suppose you have?”
“Not even a passport,” said R.. . “I thought I was dreaming at first, though that is obviously not the case. R.. swung her long plait back over her shoulder as she spoke.
“Perhaps we could ask the owner of that bar for help,” said R…… hopefully, thinking that maybe she could get a little closer today, but Matey shook her head.
“Highly unlikely,” she said. “He has his own troubles.”
She was interrupted by a burst of gunfire from somewhere further down the street and when she turned back to her visitors they had vanished. Matey shook her head in disbelief and it must be owned, in some relief.
Meanwhile R…… was waking slowly in her own bed, almost afraid to believe that she had escaped. Looking around at the familiar room she relaxed for the first time in what seemed a lifetime, and resolved to try to curb her unfortunate tendency to gloat in the future. She knew that it would be almost impossible to stop herself, though, and hoped that she would not be the first to be pulled back into a drabble.
R.. woke to find herself in bed, but not her own bed. She was tucked up under a thick duvet in a small curtain-hung room, and her suspicions were aroused.
“If I’m right,” she thought, “Then this isn’t a thick duvet, it’s a plumeaux. The curtains are cubey curtains. What are the odds that I’m at the Chalet School.”
Even as she thought this a great bell pealed out, and there were sounds of people jumping out of bed.
“Shake a leg, shake a leg.” The curtains around her bed were pulled back and a girl stood there. “Out you get lazybones. You’re on first bath, so you’re holding everybody up!”
R.. groaned and rolled out of bed. She knew what a bath at the Chalet School meant! As she ran out of the room, following another girl in the hopes of getting to the right place, she nearly ran into a slight girl trying to keep out of the way of the hurtling Chaletians. R.. stared at her and gasped.
“S….!” she said. “What on earth are you doing here?”
“The same as you I would think,” she replied. “I let on that I knew about L…’. new drabble, didn’t I? Just because we were together at New Year. One thing’s for sure, I’m not rushing everywhere!”

When S…. and R.. arrived in the Speisesaal they were extremely surprised to see two other rather familiar figures.
“C……, A…, what on earth are you doing here?” demanded S…..
“Much the same as you I would guess,” said C…… with a good deal of disgust. “Who’s drabble are we in?”
“Mine, I think,” said R.. . “I’ve just got out of Casablanca and R…… had disappeared, but S…. has turned up, and now you two as well.”
At that moment the bell rang for Grace and they had to be silent. Nobody seemed to think the sudden arrival of four people, who should have been identified as far too old to still be in school, let alone the Middles as they seemed to be, to be unusual at all. They were included in the conversation as if they had always been a part of the school, which in some ways they had been. They were able to identify just where they were when their dormitory duties were over and they had repaired to the form rooms for mending. There on the blackboards was a familiar message.

In which case, remember who’s writing this!” "W. Shakespeare cordially invites one and all to a rendition of the Scottish Play, in the Gym at fourteen o'clock, prompt."

“Well at least we know what’s happening now,” said A… with a grin. “It can’t possibly be as bad as Casablanca anyway.”
“I wouldn’t be too sure of that,” muttered C…… dourly. “I don’t think R.. got much further than this, did you? In which case, remember who’s writing this!”

They enjoyed the day in a sort of perverse way, as it was very interesting seeing the Chalet School in action, even if it was through the eyes of one of themselves, so to speak. With the rest of the Middles, they trooped along to the Gym, after Mittagessen, wondering what was going to happen. R.. in particular, as she hadn’t finished writing this bit herself. They managed to find seats somewhere near the back. There had been no hint that anyone though their presence strange. They had been accepted as if they had been attending the Chalet School forever, which in a way they had been! Neither staff nor students had queried them, even by a look. However, they did not want to push their luck, and had decided that it was best to keep a low profile. The presentation got under way, and the four CBBers enjoyed themselves hugely, as they were all familiar with the play. They had reached the point where R.. had stopped in her drabble, where the person playing Lady Macbeth was to be revealed. All but R.., who naturally knew the answer, were leaning forward in their seat, keen to find out who was playing her, when the ground began to tremble slightly. “Are you sure that Gem’s drabble hasn’t got mixed up with this one?” asked S…. anxiously. The shaking got heavier, and now they could hear a sort of rumbling noise that was rapidly getting louder. “Let’s get out of here!” shouted A…, and with one accord they ran from the Gym and out into the open. The noise was far worse here, as was the shaking and they turned in the direction it was coming from. Their worst nightmare was realised. Rushing towards them, though still a good distance away, was an avalanche. “I think it might miss the school,” said C…… tentatively. “Look, the slope is carrying it at an angle to us.” “And the trees should protect us as well,” said R… “I never wrote this bit at all.” “No, I didn’t think you did,” said A… . The avalanche missed the school by only a hundred feet or so, though the buildings were blotted out by the swirling snow that accompanied it. When it cleared, only A…, S…. and C…… were left standing dazedly where the snow had caught them. Of R.. there was no sign that she had ever been there.

R** sat up in bed, having woken with a jerk and looked around her wildly. The last thing she remembered was the swirling, blinding snow that blanketed everything out, and for a moment she was totally disorientated. Then as the realisation dawned that she was back in her own bed, she sighed in relief, snuggled down, and was asleep in minutes.

The three remaining Gloaters stared around themselves in confusion. There was no sign of the Chalet School, no snow (though it had been buffeting them only seconds before), not even any mountains. Instead they were standing in the middle of a grassy area, obviously a village green, somewhere in England. Ahead of them there was a small pond, and marching towards the pond was a group of people that looked strangely familiar. There was one adult, a woman with fair hair done up in a coronet around her head. With her were two boys, one clearly younger than the other, and three girls of the same age. Even as they watched them settle around the pond, bringing out fishing nets, tucking dresses into knickers, they caught a movement in a nearby hedge. A small body pushed its way through and headed for the group by the pond, determined to join them.
“Mary-Lou,” said C******.
“Anna and the trips,” said A***.
“Stephen and Mike,” added S****.
They watched fascinated, as the well-known scene unfolded in front of them. C****** in particular, since she had made it her business to research the character of Mary-Lou. When Anna and the children finally left for home in response to the ringing of a bell, they followed them, though C****** was torn by the desire to actually see Mother and Gran. The prospect of seeing Jo Maynard before she became the perfect butter-in won however, and before long all three were standing in the lane outside Plas Gwyn. As the party they were following walked up the path the front door flew open and Jo herself ran out to meet them.
“It doesn’t look much like Princess Leia after all,” muttered A*** to the others.
S**** giggled. “The hair you mean? No, it’s not as elegant as hers is it?”
“It’s pretty strange,” said C******. “Very odd. Never thought I would see her in the flesh.”
All three felt pretty giggly and light headed, and as the front door closed they collapsed in almost hysterical laughter. If they could have seen into the future they would have been less inclined to laugh, but for the time being they were just happy to have escaped the avalanche.

It was then that the future arrived with a bang, or rather a very bright flash and the soft sound of something dropping to the ground. There in front of them was an Apparition! The bright colour of her costume was dazzling to the eyes, for lime green is not the easiest colour to look at.
“This is no good,” she said to them as they stood there gawping. “There are no cliffs here, nothing to pull the heartstrings, or make the heart beat faster in fear. We can’t have that, can we?” and she smiled at them in a way that sent shivers down their backs. All three girls had thought themselves hardened CBBers, but faced with Lime Green Woman they quailed. They knew only too well what she was capable of, and suspected that all the safeguards against falling off cliffs that had been built into C&D would be of no help here, not where LGW clearly held sway. Then C****** pulled herself together, and called on her experience of grand slaughter.
“You can’t do anything to us,” she said. “You’re just part of a drabble!”
“And so are you here,” said LGW with a feral smile. “So are you!”

The three CBBers clung together in horror as LGW’s smile widened. “Did you think you could get away with gloating?” she said. “Twice for one of you I think?”
C****** took her courage in both hands and spoke up bravely. “I think it is twice for you too,” she said, and the two others stared at her open mouthed in admiration, for they would not have dared to speak up like that. Then A*** looked more closely at the figure in front of them and started to giggle - rather hysterically to be sure. S**** poked her, a la Rosie.
“What’s up with you?” she muttered.
“That’s not the real LGW,” said A***. “That’s the doll! Look at it! The hair is far too red, and the eyes are embroidered. Look at the cape too - you can see that it’s plain knitting.
“You mean garter stitch?” said C******, pleased to remember this from her long ago trials in the craft.
LGW looked at them, and the red embroidered mouth drooped.
“You guessed!” she said. “L***** said you would. She’ll never let me live it down!”
There was a soft implosion of sound, and the knitted figure vanished.

The displacement of air caused when the doll vanished pulled at the three remaining Gloaters, strongly enough for them to feel as if they might lose their balance at any moment. Then, with a feeling of being tugged off their feet, they suddenly found themselves flying through the air. The scene vanished, and all three woke to their normal surroundings, with a great deal of relief.

At the same time other people woke to very different surroundings. L***** woke suddenly, aware that the room was rocking around her. She felt queezy and light headed.
“Wonder what the matter is,” she thought. “I didn’t drink anything last night so it can’t be that.”
A groan made her look around properly for the first time. She was in a small room. Lying on one of three beds. There were bodies in the other two, and it was from one of them that the groan had come. A figure pulled herself upright in one of the beds.
“Where are we?” D*** asked. “Is it me or is the room rocking?”
“It’s rocking,” said L***** firmly, making the decision that it couldn’t be her if D*** was feeling it too. The third person was till sound asleep, but L***** climbed out of bed and padded across to her, determined that if they were going to suffer, they were all going to suffer together. She shook the figure until she groggily opened her eyes and turned over. L***** grinned broadly when she saw who it was.
“Hello P**,” she said. “Any idea which drabble we’re likely to be in?”

P** lifted her head from the pillow and looked at L***** blearily.
“No,” she said firmly. “How on earth would I know that? I’ve only just woken up!” She thought for a minute and then continued, “We seem to be on a boat.”
“Ah! That would explain why my head feels funny.” said L*****, “It feels like everything is going round.”
“Let’s go up on deck and see if we can work out where we are,” said D***.
Finding themselves fully dressed, even though they had been in bed, they climbed up to the deck. They were moving towards the shore, sailing up a river estuary, and from the style of the buildings that they could see, it looked as if it could be somewhere in north Africa.
P** turned to L***** with a wry grin. “Cairo?” she asked.
There was a sudden shout from behind them and they turned as one body. Running towards them was someone who clearly guessed who they were.
“L*****!” she screamed. Then seeing the blank faces presented by the other two she explained. “I’m G*****,” she said. “I’m so glad I’m not on my own.”

As soon as the ship had moored safely the four disembarked. They walked straight through the Customs shed, totally ignored by all the uniformed officers there, almost as if they didn’t exist. By the time they emerged into the street they were al giggling, not quite hysterically, for it is not every day that anyone finds themselves inside a fictional story. Of course it was not quite so unusual for one of the party, but she was known to be a persistent offender. The street was packed with people, all dressed in Arab costume and the air was full of strange smells. They strolled up the busy street, keeping their eyes open in case they saw anyone they might recognise. Finally G***** spotted a group in the distance who were clearly European, and they hurried forward.
“Don’t you think this is fun Grizel?” said a dark-haired girl of about 12. “I think it’s a topping idea of Madge’s to start a school out here.”
“At least it’s got me away from home,” said Grizel. “Come on Joey, let’s hurry up. The others are nearly out of sight.”
“So now we know,” said D***. “One of you came up with Egypt in a bedtime story, and the other wrote about it. Now just because I gloated once I find myself inside it! Thank you both so much!”
L***** and P** just grinned annoyingly.

Hmmmm. So far, P**'s Cairo doesn't seem an overly threatening destination for Gloaters, but there's still that characterization of L*****'s mysterious original as "rather disturbing" hanging over our heads....

They disembarked with the rest, filing off the boat and through the customs shed. Just outside, in the street, they saw the last thing they would have expected to see in Cairo. It was a blue box with narrow double doors and a light in the middle of the roof. K** nudged the others.
“I know how we can get out of here,” she said. “Let’s see if that thing is open.” She pointed at the box standing innocently at the side of the road.
“You aren’t suggesting that that is the Tardis are you?” asked D*** with a grin.
L***** looked thoughtful. “It could be. You wouldn’t normally see a police box in Egypt would you. Not a British police box!”
They straggled across the road, and P** pushed gently at the door, expecting it to be firmly locked, but it gave way and they crowded through it and into the box. It wasn’t any police box they had ever seen, though not all of them were old enough to have seen one in the ‘flesh’ at all. The inside was far larger than the outside, which confirmed them in their suspicions.
“How did this get into a CS drabble,” asked D***.
“Haven’t you seen the cross-overs?” asked L*****. Anything can get into a CS drabble, and probably has. Including Real Life.”
“I think we’d better hide if we really are going to risk this,” said K**.
They looked around, certain that there were more rooms than this one, as they all watched the series. They were right, a doorway opened on the far side of the control console and they tiptoed through it, nervous in case the owner returned and caught them.
They were in luck, for they had no sooner hidden themselves than they heard voices in the outer room and the familiar sounds of the Tardis hit their ears. They didn’t seem to travel for very long before the machine came to rest again, and they hoped that they were still on Earth, though obviously there was no way to tell. The voices faded away and they heard the door close, so they crept back into the control room. It was empty, and they crossed to the outer door, hoping they could get out. They were lucky, the door opened and they could see brilliant sunshine outside. In the distance was a large house, similar to an English stately home, though this was very clearly not England.
“Wonder where we are?” asked D***.
L***** had been investigating the controls of the Tardis. “I think I have found the destination panel,” she said. “We seem to be in Georgia in the early 1940s. And that is the Pyramid School owned by Madge Russell.

Madge Russell looked around her in delight. The escape from Cairo had been hair-raising in the extreme, but with the help of the American Embassy they had managed to get themselves to America. It seemed to be meant that they had arrived here at another Cairo, this time in the State of Georgia. The buildings that Madge was looking at formed the new Pyramid School, and belonged to Mr Lannis, the father of one of her girls and a millionaire. It was based in one of the old plantation houses that were scattered across the State and Mr Lannis’ money had enabled the building to be fully renovated, so that it was now one of the most luxurious school buildings it was possible to imagine. Tomorrow the pupils would arrive, the originals who has escaped with her from Egypt were already in residence, for they had no other home whilst the war raged in Europe, but they were expecting a number of new girls, mainly Americans of course, but also one or two English girls who had been evacuated to the States for the duration.
G***** stood at the entrance to the huge concourse of San Francisco railway station, feeling more than a little nervous. She had thought herself very lucky to have been sent to her relatives in America right at the start of the war, but the American lifestyle was very different to that of her home, and she had found it a little difficult to settle in. Now she was to go to an English school her feelings were mixed – nervous of a new venture and relief to be retuning to something familiar. A touch on her arm made her turn quickly.
“J*** ? I am Miss Fahmy and I will be your escort to the school.”
The accent was strange to her – not English nor American. Nor was it any European accent she was familiar with. G***** shrugged to herself. No doubt she would find out more on the long journey ahead of them.
By the time the two had crossed America G***** knew more than enough about her new school, including the reason for it’s rather odd name. She was also beginning to wonder whether there would be such an English atmosphere and ethos as she had hoped. It seemed to have had a very international flavour when it had been based in Egypt. As the taxi carried them up the long drive to the house, she looked out of the window with interest. The house and main garden area was all that remained of the original property, but there was plenty of room for games as well as a good garden area. The whole place was swarming with girls of all ages and the noise was indescribable. G*****’s heart dropped like a stone, for there seemed to be none of the discipline she associated with an English school.
Beside her Miss Fahmy laughed. “Listen to them,” she said. “That will have to stop very soon.

G***** was taken through the milling throngs of what seemed to be mostly American girls, and her heart sank a little. Then she saw a group of girls heading in the same direction as herself, and they were unmistakably English - she could hear their voices clearly. She entered the imposing front door behind Miss Fahmy and turned immediately to her left.
“That is the Head’s study. She likes to welcome all the girls herself. Wait here and I’ll see if she’s free.”
G***** stood outside the door feeling unaccountably nervous. She had nothing to fear however, and was soon back outside, eager to see more of the school. Not yet knowing how to get to the dormitories, she wandered outside and headed in the direction of the large playing fields. She failed to notice that the sky was getting ominously darker, with flashes of lightening playing across the black clouds. She did notice that most of the girls seemed to be heading back to the house, and supposed vaguely that she ought to go with them. She heard someone shouting frantically what sounded like a warning and looked back at the house, where one of the mistresses was waving madly at her to return. She waved a response and started back, but she was far too late. There was a roaring noise that seemed to come from nowhere, and a wind that whipped at her, swirling around her. All at once she found herself in the air, carried aloft by what she presumed was a tornado, though she had never seen one. The wind was full of all sorts of rubbish that it had captured, and it was only by a miracle that she wasn’t hit by something. She felt that she was miles off the ground, only kept from falling to her death by the force of the wind. She could see nothing of her surroundings and was panicking rather badly when she felt the tornado begin to slacken and die. She felt herself falling, falling tossed like a leaf, until she fell with a crash through the roof of a building, and landed on a bed. Miraculously unhurt, she scrambled to her feet and looked out of the window.
“My only Aunt Sophronisba!” she exclaimed. “Munchkins!”

Three other people were watching the tornado from one of the dormitory windows.
“There’s someone been caught in it!” exclaimed D***. “Look, that’s a body being carried away!”
“Bet it’s one of us,” said P**.
“No bet,” grinned L*****. “What shall we do with ourselves now? We seem to be getting off quite easily so far.”
“Don’t tempt fate,” said D***. “Anything could happen, and the longer we go without something nasty happening, the worse it'’ likely to be. Look at the RCS stories - and they make nearly everyone wibble!”
“Be careful Dawn. You don’t know what might trigger something. Let’s explore while we have the chance.”
They decided to start downstairs, since they had seen a dormitory, and they were all likely to be much the same. Being good Chaletians, they used the back stairs and found themselves in a long corridor. A door immediately opposite the foot of the stairs was labelled ‘Middles Spalshery’.
“Let’s see exactly what’s in a splashery,” said L***** with an grin. “We may never have another chance.”
She opened the door and gasped. The other two crowed behind her, but only got a glimpse before L***** slammed the door shut.
“We don’t want to go in there!” she said. “Much too much violence going on in there.”
D*** and P** looked at each other. They both knew what they had seen. A large room, with the furniture pushed back to the edges. Two women in the middle advancing on each other, each holding a knife.
“Too true we don’t,” said P**. “Let’s try another door.
They wandered down the long corridor till they saw a door marked Lower IVb. This time it was D*** who eased the door open and stood there totally shocked. There was no Chalet School form room on the other side, only a dark, rocky room with no window, inhabited by two women that none of them had any difficulty in recognising. D*** closed the door gently. “Not that room either,” she said.
P** opened a door on the other side of the corridor just a crack. Bright sunshine streamed out so she pushed it open a little more. A blast of cold air hit them, and they could see a snowy landscape stretching away from them. In the middle distance was a wooden hut.
“There seems to be a pattern here,” she said grimly. “You spoke too soon L*****.”
They all hesitated outside the last door on the corridor, all fearing what they would find on the other side. In the end L***** pushed to the front.
“What are we? Spineless jellyfish?” she asked, and flung the door open. When they saw what was on the other side there was a deathly silence. Then they all felt a gentle wind trying to push them through the door, a wind that was growing stronger and stronger.

Hmmmm, thought of the pattern here, Dawn seems to have triggered a look at all the RCS drabbles, the first was obviously Dilemma, then Break, the snowy landscape had to be Santa. So the fourth door then - could be from Surfeit, Ordinary Woman or even the original RCS - and if it's that one I'd definitely not want to go there!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked
