Part One
Part Two
~Vikki~

It took some time before the move was finalised; during that period Hilda and Nell managed to annoy each other tremendously. They were co-ordinating the move of the school jointly, Nell being on the spot in Switzerland to see to that end of affairs and Hilda dealing with winding up the school on the Island and setting things in place for the continuation of a Welsh branch. Requests for information went curiously astray, tiny unnecessary details would abound, with a large important one hidden in the middle of them, and Hilda suddenly realised one evening that she had signed an order form for decorating necessary in the new building without being exactly sure from the myriad of plans Nell had sent what décor was for what room.

It was with some trepidation that Hilda entered the study. She had wondered if Nell had arranged for some weird and wonderful colour scheme in there, but was relieves to see it in the usual tasteful colours that both she and Nell preferred for a working environment. A moments reflection told her that she had been worrying needlessly, Nell would know that parents often entered the study and would not put the school at risk in that way.

Hilda quickly scanned the post already awaiting her and then joined the rest of the staff who had come early in the staff room where they had kaffee together before exploring the classrooms and common rooms together, exclaiming at the possibilities they saw. It was not until it was time to change for Abendessen that Hilda ascended to her own small flat. The door was stained pine like all the others, and Hilda ran an appreciative hand over the wood grain as she opened it.

It was the last thing about that flat she did appreciate. The hall and living room were carpeted in a yellow and brown spotted pattern, with the occasional orange blob. The wall paper looked as if it had been designed for a child’s bedroom, with the living room being covered with fairy tale characters in the most lurid colours and the hall appeared to have animals of every size and description, and very out of proportion with each other. Taking a deep breath Hilda nerved herself up to open a door. It was the small kitchenette, red cupboards clashed violently with a purple blind at the window and brown lino on the floor; she quickly shut the door and turned to the next one. This proved to be her bathroom. There was a bathroom suite, all in institution green, and tiles. That was all that could be said of the tiles, they were tiles. Every colour possible, in random order, no pattern discernable. By now Hilda was beginning to feel her head spinning and trying unsuccessfully to shut her eyes to the colour she took advantage of the sink to splash her face with cold water before creeping nervously to the last door in the hallway.

The last door had to be her bedroom; she knew that. What she didn’t know was what Nell would have had done there. As she stepped inside she felt sick. The walls, curtains, carpet, woodwork, everything was pink. Different shades of pink, but defiantly pink. There was a cover on the dressing table that was pink, and edged with lace, and one on the drawers, that was a different shade of pink and design of lace. There was a pink telephone on the bedside table, which held a pink coaster, and a glass covered with a pink lace doily. Even her books appeared to have been carefully backed in pink paper before being placed onto the shelves, which were all edged with lace runners. She glanced upwards, even the ceiling was pink, and the light shade was pink with long deep pink fringes on it. There was only one item in the room that wasn’t pink. That was the bedspread. It was a candlewick design, and could easily have been pale pink, but it had been dyed. It was now a lime green in colour.

Here you go then Sue!!!

Hilda returned to her study and called the firm of interior decorators, maintaining her usual calm with something of an effort. She removed her belongings to the school San for the time being, as the rest of the staff bedrooms that were not yet inhabited had still to be aired. A representative came out the next morning.
“I am very sorry Fraulein,” he said when the problem had been explained. “We did question the colours at the, but Fraulein Wilson was certain that they were correct. We will certainly change the décor for you. I have brought the colour chart.”
Hilda chose a colour scheme that was much more to her taste, replacing the tiles in the bathroom with a soft pastel colour that would be soothing after a long day. She said nothing to Nell of course, knowing that that lady would have a good idea of the reaction she had achieved. Her mind was already busy planning what she would do, but she was content to wait. Waiting was something she was extremely good at, having had much practice over the years.

In fact it was not until the Welsen branch moved up to the Gornetz Platz that anything more occurred. On the first morning after the move, Nell sat down to her Fruhstuck as usual, relieved that all had gone according to plan. She was astounded to find that although the rest of the staff who had helped with the move were being served with the normal breakfast, she received a glass of fruit juice, a yoghurt, and bran flakes. She said nothing, but helped herself to the rolls in the basket on the table to fill the gaps. At Mittagessen she found that while the rest were served with a delicious stew, accompanied by fluffy dumplings and the famous crispy potatoes that melted in the mouth, she was given a salad. When this was followed by plain fruit instead of apfelstrudle and lashing of cream, she frowned but finished her meal without comment, though the staff were trying hard not to stare. After she had said Grace she went to the kitchen to confront the cook, another of Karen's family as was traditional in the Chalet School.

“But is this not what you requested, Fraulein Wilson,” asked Maria, somewhat perplexed, for she had only been following the orders she had been given. “I understood that you had asked to go on a diet, as you had gained a little more weight than you felt was ideal.” This last was said with some trepidation, for Maria was aware that Nell was famed for her sarcasm. On this occasion however, Nell knew exactly where to place the blame.
“I do not suppose you could trace where this request came from,” she said idly.
“Nein, Fraulein. The note came on the normal headed paper. It was typed as is usual with these things.” Maria was a little curious about what was going on, for clearly some trick had been played on the Head, and she wndered who would have had the temerity to do such a thing. That it had been Miss Annersley did not enter the cook’s head, for she held that lady in high esteem.
“I would be pleased if you would disregard these orders from now on Maria,” said Nell calmly. “There has obviously been some sort of misunderstanding, though not on your part I know. I am only sorry that you have been put to so much trouble.”
Satisfied that her meals would now return to normal, she left the kitchen and returned to her study, frowning slightly. It had been some years since the school had come out to the Gornetz Platz, and she had thought that Hilda had decided not to retaliate for the décor of her flat. It was clear though that she had only been biding her time. No one else could have given those orders to Maria.

Nell decided to bide her time. She knew that she could trust Maria not to speak of the matter and comforted herself with the thought that Hilda would never know if the trick had even been carried out. Her revenge would take some time to plan; in fact she had to admit to herself that she had no idea to bless herself with at the present moment.

Hilda was finding that this was one prank that was rather flat. No one was able to tell her how Nell had reacted, not that she lowered herself to ask. There was no comment, and all she could do was imagine Nell’s face when presented with mean after meal consisting of diet fare. Knowing that Nell would seek revenge, Hilda started plotting her next act straightaway.

To the rest of the staff it seemed that both Hilda and Nell were content once Millie’s had moved to the Platz. Both had a renewed vigour, a ‘spring in their step’ as Joey Maynard was heard to say on more than one occasion. Their closeness to each other was noted on and the community around the san and the school were both sure that the two heads were fast friends who were glad to be together once more.
They could not have been further from the truth.

The two were indeed glad to be together, if only so they could keep a close eye on each other’s exploits. They were not fast friends however, even though in their deepest moments they knew that life was empty when the other was missing. Hilda had been known to muse on the fact that love and hate are close together and Nell always said that she would keep her friends close and her enemies even closer. That last statement would cause laughs in the staffroom and in Joey’s salon as everyone would look towards Hilda, who normally said with a smile that she was confident she knew which category she fell into. She did, and knew that Nell would keep no one as close as she kept Hilda.

It transpired in the end that the two both planned their next steps for the same time. The end of term. Hilda always slept late on the first day of the holidays and this day was to be no exception. She had gone to bed and switched off the alarm clock with satisfaction, made all the better by knowing what she had planned for Nell. Hilda slept the sleep of the just, which she shouldn’t have in all conscience, but she did. It was several minutes after she fell asleep that the telephone rang. That was how it seemed anyway. As Hilda glanced at the clock she saw it was actually five in the morning. The phone was still ringing, and uttering curses she slipped out of bed and padded across the room. The bright voice on the other end of the line informed her of the time. Hilda replied somewhat groggily asking why they were ringing her to tell her the time. When she was informed by the young and very awake voice that this was her pre-booked alarm call she cursed some more and slammed down the receiver.

When Nell received an alarm call at six she was not happy, but was at least content that she had got one over on Hilda as regards the timing of the call.

Hilda was annoyed on more than one account. Not only had she been woken a whole hour earlier than Nell, but there was a strong indication that both were starting to think alike. She was as yet undecided as to which was the most annoying, but she knew which she could do something about. The early call. The other was worrying, for she had always known which of them was superior, and it wasn’t Nell Wilson! This event almost made her think otherwise – almost but not quite, though the thought did flicker through her mind for just an instant. Something needed to be done, and soon.

Nell Wilson’s reaction was very different. Of course she was annoyed at the early call, but the day had been fine and she had taken advantage of this and gone for a long tramp, which she had enjoyed immensely. She was delighted that she had scored over Hilda by waking her earlier, and the only cloud was the knowledge that Hilda would certainly not let this pass for long.

Unfortunately from her perspective, she was scheduled to take the girls from St Mildred’s for a long weekend in Verona, where they would see the sights of the city and attend the opera. She knew she would have to be very wary on her return. The weekend proved to be as inspiring as she had expected, and darkness had fallen by the time the coach pulled up outside St Mildred’s. The girls tumbled off, shaking their legs to rid themselves of the stiffness caused by the long journey and poured into the house. By the time they had all dispersed to their beds, Nell wanted nothing more than to follow them as speedily as possible. Perhaps this was why she had lowered her guard.

She climbed the stairs to her room wearily and opened her door, flicking the light switch as she did so. When the room failed to light up she muttered something under her breath, and turned to go and get a fresh bulb. On her return she walked straight into the room, leaving the door open so that she could see what she was doing. Almost as soon as she entered she felt it. Something was tickling her face, running through her hair. She suppressed the scream which almost escaped form her, though she gasped loudly. She stopped and put up her hands to feel around herself. There was something there sure enough. Threads of something, it felt like, nasty but harmless. She took another step forward, trying to ignore the ghostly feel of the things on her face, until she could find a stool to stand on to replace the light. Not entirely to her surprise, there was no bulb to replace, so she simply fitted the new one into the empty socket. Returning to the doorway, she flicked the switch again and the room sprang into view. Hanging from the ceiling were black cotton threads, a great many of them, the colour making them invisible in the low light coming from the hallway. Placed carefully on the low table beside her chair was the missing bulb. Nell smiled grimly to herself as she prepared for bed. Now it was her turn again, and she would give full measure to her revenge.

Nell gave a lot of thought and preparation to her revenge as she always did, being a person who delighted in getting things spot on. Hilda then did the same in return and the next few terms passed in their usual way with the two heads working closely together, often seeking out each other’s company and always keeping a watchful eye on what the other was planning. Each played a trick and then waited in suspenders for the other to get revenge.

It took Mary-Lou to bring them back together. As Hilda remarked, “There are times when we just have to work together, and this is one of them.” It had been an exclamation of frustration from Hilda that had set the train of events off, and Nell picking up on it had enquired as to the cause. Hilda caught off guard for once gave Nell her unvarnished opinion of the senior. Nell giggled for a moment at the thought of Hilda being faced down time and time again by the earnest good deed doer who was ALWAYS right, and even worse had the backing of Joey Maynard. Then she realised that the girl was steadily growing worse and that she was slated for St Mildred’s after she left the school proper. Her face took on a more serious look.
“Yes, you’ve realised, by the time she joins you she will be unbearable. Her little ‘accident’ only seems to have made her surer of herself. I knew I should have paid Emmerence in hard currency instead of just promising not to expel her or Margot, she might have done the job properly if I had.”
“Emmeremce never did anything thoroughly in her life, nothing she was asked to do anyway. She would hate to actually please any of us. We need to do something about Mary-Lou though or she will end running the place before she leaves and I for one am rather attached to my job,” Nell replied.

The two plotted and planned for some time, this time deciding not to trust their plans to anyone else. They had a few schemes, and over the next few terms tried them all. Mary-Lou found herself sent on walk up a glacier that proved to be unstable, she was sent to the Tiernsee with Joey (after all who else would want to go with Joey?) and surprisingly enough the local who supplied their boat gave them one with a faulty oarlock. Then the sixth form went to St Moritz skiing one half term and there was an avalanche. All these events Mary-Lou survived, leaving Hilda and Nell wondering how they could shake the girl’s self-possession and unbreakable hold on life. They had never worked together for so long or been so united.

The last term of Mary-Lou’s school career came at last, and Nell could see that despite all their plotting and planning, all the expertise acquired over the years, she would still be descending on St Mildred’s the following term. It was an interesting term, which climaxed during the Half Term break when Margot Maynard let her ‘devil’ have free reign. She had conceived a positive hatred against Ted Grantley, a new girl who had, she discovered, been expelled from three schools before arriving at the Chalet School. Margot’s complaint against her was simply that she was becoming friendly with her sister Len, and she resented it. During the storm that broke she was all set to attack Mary-Lou when the Head Girl intervened in the row that had broken out. It was only Len’s action in smacking her sister’s face which prevented it, the two Heads had realised despairingly.

Hilda and Nell had been planning during the summer break, trying to come up with something, anything, that would work against the charmed life of Mary-Lou Trelawney. They had struggled to find anything new however, and had gone away for their holidays with nothing to show for it. It was whilst they were apart that it dawned on both that they missed the other, though in a different way to when Nell had first come out to Switzerland. Then they had missed each other as rivals, and missed the ability to keep an eye on what the other was doing. Now each missed the company of the other in a funny kind of way, for neither’s feeling for the other had changed. It was Hilda who realised what was behind it. Hilda whose understanding of people gave her the insight to realise it.
“I do believe we could have been friends,” she said to herself. “In fact, we probably should have been. How strange.”

When the new term started at St Mildred’s Nell waited with a calmness that belied the fear that had wormed its way inside her, fight it how she chose. Of course no one, least of all Hilda, was aware of Nell’s feelings, for she hid it with the skill acquired from her years of battling her co-Head. To anyone watching she was her usual self as she welcomed the girls to the new year, and especially those members of the Gang who had joined Mary-Lou at the Finishing Branch.

I've just done a big catch up on this and am sniggering at the fact that OOAOML has, unwittingly butted in and changed the course of history!

I can't imagine what they can do to solve the problem though!

Thank you Pat. Poor Nell what a prospect to look forward to, a year of ML with less people around, she will be even more overpowering.

So, Hilda is a mere training run, compared to Mary-Lou. Twisted Evil
