Felicity breaks out

#1: Felicity breaks out Author: Joan the DwarfLocation: Er, where am I? PostPosted: Fri Oct 08, 2004 8:45 pm

Felicity Maynard was perilously close to losing her temper. She glared at the woman in the chair opposite with her old-fashioned hair and string of pearls.

"I won't do it," she said, abrubtly, "I won't! I don't want to marry a doctor, and you're not going to make me!"

The woman in the chair smiled indulgently at the angry young woman. "But my dear," she explained in a patronising manner, "It's all in place for you..."

"I won't marry him!" Felicity repeated angrily, "I know that's what you've always wanted for us, to marry nice doctors like Jack - and Jem - and to settle down and produce lots of future Chalet School pupils. But I won't! Len and Con both did - aren't you happy with that? And Margot became a doctor and married God, but I suppose you don't care about her 'cos she didn't have any babies."

Felicity paused for a moment to draw breath, and the woman in the chair shook her head as if at a wayward child. "I'm sure you'll like it when you try it," she assured Felicity, "And it's perfect timing, you must admit - here you are, a lovely young lady of nineteen, two terms into your Oxford career where you'll be educated to be almost - but not quite - as clever as your future husband. It's Easter, the thaw was late this year so there's plenty of opportunity for him to rescue you from all sorts of wildly improbable dangers - you might need to spend a few weeks in San afterwards, but what a small price to pay!"

"No!" Felicity stamped her foot, "I won't do it, Elinor!"

I'm going a little slower this time - I'll try and restrict myself, after last time rather took it out of me...

"Oh, you will, Felicity," the benign expression had left Miss Brent-Dyer's face, "You will marry a doctor, because that's what all good Chalet School girls do. And," she lowered her voice ominously, "You wouldn't want to be a bad Chalet Girl would you, now? You know what happens to bad Chalet girls, don't you? Remember, " the author's eyes glinted as she hissed her final warning, "Remember... Auntie Grizel."

Felicity could not repress a shudder. Elinor saw and pressed home her advantage, "Yes! " she cried, "It took a broken back to make her good! Just like Eustacia," her eyes misted over with the memory, "Ah yes... So I wonder, how long a convalescence will it take you? "

Felicity knew that Elinor was capable of it - anything to make her a Good Chalet Girl. And she would be looked after in San, just the right place to meet eligible doctors... With an effort, Felicity pulled herself together. "Oh no you won't, Elinor," she declared, "You wouldn't dare do that. And I'll tell you why. No-one would read it, that's why," the author jerked up her head and Felicity saw that her guess was true, "You've used that plot device too often! " she almost crowed, "You can't use it again because no-one will read it... and then it won't have happened!" she finished triumphantly.

The grey-haired old woman seemed to shrink in her chair. The air of malevolence passed, and she bent her head. "You are right, of course, " she admitted finally, "But... won't you do it, to please an old woman?" she looked beseeching up at the young Maynard.

"No, Elinor," Felicity said firmly.

"Then what are you going to do with your life?" Elinor snapped.

Felicity almost laughed. "I'm doing my degree, "she pointed out, "And then I'll be a stage-manager. I don't need a nice man, doctor or no! And it's not as if you did, either!" Elinor harrumphed and Felicity pressed home her advantage. "And never mind my life, " she went on, "What about your death? What are you even doing here?" Elinor made a shrugging gesture and her insubstantial arm passed through the back of the chair. "You're a good Catholic!" Felicity certainly believed in carrying war into the enemy's camp, "What are you doing haunting? You ought to be in Purgatory."

"Plenty of good Catholics haunt places, " Elinor snapped, "There's lots of precedent. Anyway, it's not as if I run around foretelling death, I'm only a poltergeist."

"Yes, but you haunt that computer, " Felicity pointed out, "There's not much precedent for that. And you haunt that website as well."

Elinor smiled. "Who would've thought it?" she said dreamily, "I can write without publishers and proofs. " she snapped upright, "And I can give life to ungrateful hussies like you!"

Felicity fired up instantly, "You're not the only one, now!" she cried, "There are lots of people who can give me life! I can go along with any of them - and I do! I've had all sort of adventures. Although," she added, as she was at bottom a truthful girl, "Some of them have been rather... odd." she shook her head - she still had nightmares about the gnomes sometimes. "But that's not the point, " she went on, "I won't marry him and that's flat. You won't understand, but there's something I have to tell you. I..."

Ooooh! What, what, what? I guess that it is asking a bit much to expect this drabble to be completed as quickly as the last one - but I hope it isn't too long before the next bit comes along. *Wibbling at the thought of Elinor haunting this website* *Wonders which drabbler is in fact Elinor*s ghost* *Decides this is one of those questions which are best left unanswered*

Fascinating give-and-take between Felicity & Elinor! *I haven't missed the gnomes, have I?* Just what is it that Felicity has to tell EBD? (she asked, impatiently)

Thank you Joan. I like the idea of Felicity 'going along' with drabble writers! I hope she keeps 'going along' with you Wink

Did we ever find out who EBD_herself was? I still don't know. Sad

In Return to a Parallel Universe, Lisa_T wrote:
“Yes, you should!” came RTW’s voice, strangely disembodied. “Just like you should have worked out that I, and no other, was EBD_Herself! And now you are aaaaaaaalll in my power! MwhahahahaHAHA!” RTW choked at that point, to the momentary relief of her listeners.
I believe this was ultimately substantiated, though I'm not sure there was ever a formal owning up on her thread, exactly.... Neutral (She may still be out there, haunting the board.... Where's that hair-raising smiley?)

Sorry this has been so long, my PB got my cold Confused Re: the gnomes - I see them as akin to the Calvin and Hobbes "noodle incident"... Cool And yes, this does have a new subtitle (it won't make sense yet, but will by the end, and it's not what you think!)

Felicity took a deep breath, but before she could continue the door opened and Con drifted in. A glance was all it took to tell Felicity that Con was many miles away, as she wandered aimlessly around the room, apparently looking for something.

"Have you lost something, Con?" Felicity asked, concerned.

Con lifted her head dreamily. "Oh... yes, " she said, a faraway look in her eyes, "I'm sure I left a quad in here after lunch..." she gave a sudden, slightly tipsy giggle.

"Con!" Felicity broke sharply across her reverey.

"Sorry," apologised Con, "It's rather difficult to concentrate, " she gave another giggle, and Felicity had a sudden urge to shake her elder sister. Con saw this, and attempted to explain. "It's that drabble, " she giggled again, "They're going through all my past life... and loves,"

Elinor, still seated insubstantially on the sofa, gave a loud snort. Con turned on her in an instant. "It's more fun than you ever let me have! " she cried, then, seeing the hurt look on the author's face, softened, "OK, so it's different fun. But it's fun nonetheless. " the dreamy look returned to her face, "Especially that time when..."

"Con!" Felicity exclaimed, then, quickly, "I think you left Number Three in the morning room."

"Oh yes, " Con beamed, and drifted out of the room.

Felicity drew another deep breath and turned to the author. "As I was saying, I can't marry any of your doctors, " she resumed, "I'm sure they're all perfectly nice, but... " she swallowed hard, "I'm gay."

Well that's different! Not sure if any of the drabbles have suggested that before! Laughing Also waiting EBD's reaction! Wink
