February?

The pale February sunlight strikes a sparkle from the snow [1]
That surrounds the Chalet School, but best beware!
In the valleys, dark comes soon,[2]
And a brilliant afternoon,
May breed weather that will take you unaware.

Have you chocolate in your rucksack, lest the local shepherd’s hut
Not provide essentials if you go astray?
Pack the makings of a rope,
Or you mightn’t have a hope
If a sudden cliff should leave you still and grey! [3]

Is your alpenstock available in case it’s very slick?
Or perhaps you’re excellent at gorse bush landings?
If you rip great stocking holes,
Or embrace telegraph poles,
Do you think that Matey will be understanding? [4]

There may be great gales of wind, that will force you to stay in [5]
Till the thought of country dancing drives you mad
Until courting tummy ache
Feasting with sardines on cake
Will seem the best idea you’ve ever had. [6]

Could a February Gather be a way of tempting fate?
Or are CBBers too equipped to quail?
Tardis packed with Edelweiss,
drabble harness, chocolate slice,
And the promise of a most successful Sale?

Footnotes, for those who care about such things

1. “Pale February sunlight” appears to be the only type available this month. (Eustacia, Lavender, Adrienne)
2. For how mid-February affects valleys, see Eustacia.
3. If rope is unavailable, a handy piece of tea chest may serve. (Lavender)
4. For lessons in sliding downhill or ceasing to slide, see Carola.
5. In February, “great gales of wind” may even stop the ferries from running. (Carola) Moreover, visibility may be “nil,” resulting in postponement of matches. (Tom)
6. To confirm the Februaryness of the menu in Lintons, see United.
