Curse those multiple plot bunnies! This is a very random idea which occured to me whilst I was um... slightly inebriated. Embarassed It's dedicated to Catherine, who said I should post it, and to Kat because it's one of her favourite films too.

Cecil had seen the explosion from her bedroom window. She’d never seen a falling star before so she didn’t know if that was supposed to happen. Fortunately Phil and Geoff had had a big fight and distracted Mamma and Rosli. Anna was busy in the kitchen. No-one would miss her if she went out to see where the shooting star had landed. Cecil had run downstairs and put her boots, scarf and coat on very quickly, before anyone realised she had gone. Only Bruno saw her, so she took him with her so he wouldn’t give the game away.

It didn’t take long to find where the star had landed. There was a big hole in the ground and lots of smoke. Cecil was glad it hadn’t landed near the pine trees or there would have been a fire.

Bruno didn’t like the hole. He kept barking at it and tugging at the lead as though he wanted to go home. Cecil didn’t want to go home yet. She might never see another falling star and so she should look properly at it while she had the chance.

There was something in the hole. It looked a bit like the star had hit a car or something and Cecil wondered if she should go and fetch Papa in case people had been hurt. Then, as she looked into the hole, she saw something move. There was somebody down there and they had been hurt! Cecil couldn’t stand there and do nothing. She climbed down into the hole and began digging in the snow until she found the creature.

It was blue and fluffy and had four legs, big eyes and big ears. Cecil decided it must be a dog. She’d never seen a blue dog before, but then again, there must be lots of different sorts of dogs in the world and she hadn’t seen a lot of them, so maybe some dogs were blue. The blue dog kept talking to itself but Cecil couldn’t understand what it was saying. It didn’t seem to like the snow, so Cecil decided to take it home. She couldn’t carry it because it was too big, so she lifted it up and put it on Bruno’s back. Bruno must have wanted to help too, because he started tugging at the lead even more.

“It’s all right,” she told the dog. “We’ll be home soon and then Mamma will look after you.”

The dog looked at her and then Cecil had a shock. This wasn’t an ordinary dog! The dog spoke! He reached out one of his paws and said, “H-hiiiiii…”

Joey Maynard had led a colourful life. She had had several near-death experiences, fled from the Nazis and was the mother of eleven, including a set of triplets. However, in years to come she would describe the day on which Cecil turned up with what appeared to be a blue mutant koala as the strangest of her life.

Rosli had just discovered that Cecil wasn’t in the house when Bruno came racing through the front door with Cecil following behind and the strangest creature Rosli had ever seen sitting on his back. St. Bernard’s don’t have particularly expressive faces, but Bruno was clearly in a state of panic.

“I found him in the hole where the star landed,” Cecil explained, breathlessly but matter-of-factly. “I couldn’t leave him out on the snow. I’m going to call him Stitch.”

“Cecilia Marya Maynard, what on earth possessed you!” Joey cried as she entered the hallway, having been attracted by Rosli’s exclamations. “You know that you’re not to go out in the snow on your own. And what have you brought back with you?”

“I couldn’t leave him out in the snow, Mamma,” Cecil reiterated reproachfully as she helped the creature to dismount from Bruno’s back, much to the dog’s relief. “Can’t I keep him as a pet?”

“No you most certainly cannot! Cecil, you can’t just pick up animals wandering around the Platz and claim them for your own! It might already have an owner,” Joey looked at the creature who was eyeing her cautiously whilst probing its own nose with its tongue. “Although I don’t think it likely,” she added with some distaste.

Cecil looked hurt. “But Mamma, you let Claire and Erica and Ruey and Roddy and Roger and Adrienne stay and they’re people. Stitch is a dog! Dogs are easier to take care of than people!”

“Cecil, that is not a dog! It’s…well, it’s blue for a start!”

The creature regarded Joey thoughtfully before remarking, “Also cute and fluffy!”

It was too much for Joey. She promptly fainted, much to the alarm of Rosli, who wasn‘t quite quick enough to catch her. The Coadjutor fled to the kitchen to fetch Anna and as her mistress lay there, still, grey and to all appearances dead, the small blue creature entertained himself by unravelling her earphones.

Meanwhile, over at the Chalet School, Nancy Wilmot was entertaining two very strange visitors.

“You’re both teachers?” she said, regarding the odd couple in front of her somewhat doubtfully. “You see, Miss Annersley didn’t say anything about new staff arriving this term.”

“Well, I assure you, all our credentials are in order!” said the thinner of the two. “I mean,” with a nervous chuckle, “why would we be here if we weren’t really teachers?”

“And your subject is…?”

“Drama!” announced the newcomer with a flourish. There was something quite strange about this woman which Nancy couldn’t quite put her finger on. She was very thin, a rather unhealthy colour and obviously wearing a wig.

She turned to the other new arrival, a large bald man so fat that his shirt didn’t cover his expansive belly. “And what is your subject?”

The gentleman grunted. “I am evil genius. I teach any subject you require. But mainly science. Am very good with genetic experiments.”

Fortunately, Nancy was too busy trying to identify the speaker’s accent to actually listen to the words. Realising that he had finishing speaking and her two guests were waiting for a response, she stammered a reply.

“In that case, welcome to the Chalet School! I-I’m afraid I didn’t quite catch your names.”

“Pleakley. Miss Pleakley,” said the School’s new drama mistress. “And this is Mr Jumba Jookiba.”

By the time Jack Maynard returned from the San, Freudesheim was in a state of chaos. Joey was standing in the hallway, her hair hanging loose around her face. She was nursing her head and muttering dazedly about something “swinging from the plaits”. Bruno was cowering in a corner and Anna was clutching a broom, staring up at the ceiling where the lightbulb seemed to have been smashed. Phil and Geoff were nowhere to be seen, although their voices could be heard upstairs. Jack would later learn that the twins had decided to make a boating lake on their bedroom floor and were transporting water from the bathroom using one of Anna’s saucepans.

“Looks like you’ve had an eventful afternoon,” chuckled the doctor. “What happened here?”

“Cecil has acquired some kind of…animal,” said Jo frantically. “I told her she couldn’t keep it and it…well, it spoke to me! I think I must have fainted, and when I came to, the thing started swinging on my plaits. Anna chased it with the broom and somehow it managed to get onto the ceiling,” she gestured upwards, “which accounts for the lightbulb.”

Jack stared at his wife for a few moments, during which he wondered if he’d kept the phone number of that psychiatrist he’d met at the conference in Montreax, then managed to force himself to speak. “And, er…where is Cecil now?”

“Up in her room. She took the creature with her. She’s barricaded herself in and Rosli is trying to coax her out.”

Just read this again, glad to see it's back. Joey said in the first installment
Quote:
Cecil, you can’t just pick up animals wandering around the Platz and claim them for your own! It might already have an owner,
That's hardly fair, it's what Joey does all the time (although, as Cecil said, they're usually human). Smile

A brief little snippet as people keep hassling me for more...

Cecil was cheerfully ignoring Rosli’s pleadings, having wedged a chair under the handle of her bedroom door so the Coadjutor couldn’t get in. Her new pet was investigating the room and seemed particularly enthralled by the doll’s house in the corner. By now, however, Cecil was beginning to realise that Stitch had some destructive tendencies and she positioned herself in front of the house in the hope of preventing a doll massacre, talking cheerfully all the time.

“Everyone thinks it must be so great, being a Maynard and having so many brothers and sisters, but it’s not much fun when you are one,” she told Stitch. “I mean, Mamma’s always writing her new book or over at the School so she’s not around much. Papa’s a doctor so I don’t see him an awful lot either. Len, Con and Margot - they’re triplets, you know, so they’re special - are away at university and the boys are away at school in England, ‘cept Geoff ‘cos he’s too young. Me and Felicity are at the Chalet School but she’s a boarder and I’m not. And Phil was very poorly a couple of years ago so she needs Anna and Rosli to look after her a lot.”

Stitch, thwarted in his attempts to wreak havoc amongst the dolls and not greatly interested in Cecil’s speech, climbed on to the bed and made himself comfortable as Cecil continued.

“Even though there are lots of us it gets lonely sometimes,” she sighed, then brightened up. “But I’ve got you now. Neither of us is going to be lonely any more!”
