I haven't abandoned "Dilemma" - I am just waiting for inspiration to strike. It did strike but a bit off target.....

Hilda Annersley gazed out of the window of her office, wondering whether she could slip away for an hour. The sun was high over head and the mountains clearly defined against a flawless summer sky. A walk was just what she needed, but could she get away without a parent phoning about their daughter, or some girl needing a stern word.

She reached a sudden decision and stood up, pushing her chair back. She went round her desk and walked quickly to the door. Before she could do more than take hold of the doorknob, there was a sharp knock on the door. It opened immediately and Rosalie Dene practically fell through, pushing Hilda into the room and closing the door behind her. Hilda noticed that she looked distinctly harassed.

"Whatever is the matter, Rosalie?" she asked in surprise. Rosalie turned to peer at the door before answering in a strangled whisper.

"There is someone very strange asking to see you," she croaked.

Before Hilda could reply the door suddenly shook with three loud booming knocks and both women jumped backwards in fright.

"What on earth..." began Hilda, but she was cut off as the door burst open.

A tall man with a long beard was standing in the open doorway. Hilda stared at him, open-mouthed in astonishment.

"See?" muttered Rosalie.

The stranger stepped forward into the room, looked hard at the two women and began to speak.....

A likely story, Gem. We believe, thousands wouldn't.

"Hilda Annersley?" said the stranger in a deep, rich voice. It was a voice, Hilda reflected, that was used to being obeyed. She found herself nodding. "Excellent", proclaimed the man. "Shall we sit down? We have much to discuss." He moved towards the chair in front of Hilda's desk.

At this point Rosalie seemed to recover the power of speech. "Now, wait just a minute," she squeaked. "I thought I asked you to wait in the...."

Rosalie got no further for the man cut her off with an imperious gesture. "Young woman", he boomed, "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards for they are subtle and quick to anger." With that startling pronouncement he swept towards the desk and sat himself down in the chair with the air of one who did not intend to move in the near future.

The two women remained by the door staring at each other. "Wizards?" mouthed Hilda silently. Rosalie was clearly too astounded to speak.

"Harrummph" came the pointed cough from behind them.

Hilda took a deep breath and gathered all her resources of self-possession. She was by now resigned to hearing what this peculiar man had to say. "Rosalie," she said in a steady voice. "I think it would be best if you rang for some tea."

Gandalf? Confused

#25:  Author: AnneLocation: London PostPosted: Mon Sep 13, 2004 9:33 pm

Hilda seated herself, trying to look more composed than she felt. "Now, what can I do for you, Mr...er...." she broke off, looking questioningly at her uninvited visitor.

The stranger surveyed her with a piercing gaze. "My name," he said, "is Gandalf the Grey. Or Mithrandir if you prefer the name the elves use."

"Elves?" repeated Hilda faintly, images of little gnomish figures in pointy hats dancing through her mind.

Gandalf looked at her thoughtfully for a moment. "I think, " he said, "that there is a good deal that you are going to have to take on faith. Or, just a moment....." He stopped and gazed about the room for a moment, his eyes coming to rest on the bookshelf. "What year is this?" he demanded.

Hilda had by this time decided that she was clearly in the company of a dangerous lunatic and she made up her mind to humour him. "It's 1959" she told him in the tone one uses when speaking to the deeply stupid or slightly unbalanced.

"Ha!" pronounced her guest. "That explains it. We haven't really become popular yet." Hilda, having absolutely no idea what her guest was talking about, nodded encouragingly.

"No, no, no dear lady", the man said, catching her expression. "I am not insane and I will explain myself. I just need......" He got to his feet and paced up and down, clearly lost in thought. "This is an educational establishment, is it not?" he asked. Hilda nodded silently. "Then you must surely have a book archive?"

"You mean a library?" Hilda asked. "Yes, yes! That will do just nicely." the man said, appearing pleased.

A short while later Hilda found herself escorting her visitor into the school library, which was fortunately empty of girls. There was a brief delay while she explained how the alphabetical index worked, but very soon Gandalf was striding down the "T" aisle, muttering under his breath. Suddenly he stopped and gave a pleased-sounding harrumph.

Hilda followed his pointing finger and saw four volumes, three of which looked quite new and unread. "The Lord of the Rings" she read from the spines. "The Hobbit". Recognition appeared slowly on her face. "Aren't those the books by that Oxford professor?" she asked. "The second one was so long that no-one wanted to buy it. I think I read a few pages. It was about a little man that lived in a hole and a wizard came to......." She trailed off and stared stupidly at her visitor.

"Oh", she said.

*snickering* Mean to tell me Hilda Annersley hadn't read it? Shocked Shocked Shocked Flippin' 'eck! She should be ashamed of herself. Call herself an English mistress? ROFL (ok ok i know it probably didn't take off so quickly...and after all that, i haven't even read them myself. No, I lie- I did manage to get half way through 'the hobbit' at the age of 11. Never looked at them since!)

There again, when LOTR was first published it was as one book - somewhat daunting for anyone to start! And in 1959 there were not as popular. (Trying to find excuses here for Hilda!!! Laughing ) Love Hilda's reaction!

#34:  Author: LissLocation: Harrow, London PostPosted: Tue Sep 14, 2004 7:51 am

I thought they initially published them in three volumes, despite Prof. Tolkien's objections?

#35:  Author: PatLocation: Doncaster PostPosted: Tue Sep 14, 2004 11:16 am

So did I!! I understood that they had to wait ages for the 3rd volume as well!

#36:  Author: JackieJLocation: Kingston upon Hull PostPosted: Tue Sep 14, 2004 2:41 pm

I think the wait for the third volume was because of the appendices. Odd how the wait for the third volume of the film seems to be taking so long as well (we like the extended editions!) This is looking very good though Anne, I'm extremely curious as to what Gandalf wants with the CS girls. *points out that if you wanted to stick to chronology, it would have been an earlier head of Hogwarts if that had been the story, Ooooh.... that's an idea though, although I don't feel able to write it, may post it in Inspire* JackieJ

#37:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Tue Sep 14, 2004 4:02 pm

LOTR was originally published as three volumes. I read the first two volumes in the Fourth Year, but we had to wait until Lower V1 for Volume 3.

#38:  Author: LesleyLocation: Allhallows, Kent PostPosted: Tue Sep 14, 2004 4:39 pm

My mistake - thought they it was first published as one! Embarassed

#39:  Author: AnneLocation: London PostPosted: Tue Sep 14, 2004 7:01 pm

I want the extended version of volume 3 of LOTR too! ****

Gandalf nodded his head. "Yes, my dear lady," he confirmed, "I am the same wizard who chased Bilbo Baggins out of his comfortable and rather smug middle age all those years ago." Gandalf paused with a half-smile and a far-away expression, as though he was seeing something that Hilda could not, something that he regarded with affectionate amusement. "Hobbits!" he said, with a chuckle. "They really did turn out to be an amazing breed."

He suddenly seemed to recall where he was and he shook himself out of whatever memory had tugged at him. "I forget myself," he said. "I have come because I need your help. Or rather the help of one under your care. Is there somewhere we can sit while I tell you a strange tale?"

Hilda gestured to one of the library desks, with two chairs at it. Gandalf swept up the three volumes of Lord of the Rings and carried them to the table. He waited for Hilda to sit down before seating himself across the desk from her.

"Do you know the bare story of the Lord of the Rings?" Gandalf asked.

Hilda thought hard and managed to recall the few snatches of the story that Joey had described to her after reading the books. "An evil force who lost a magic ring and wanted it back....it was found by a hobbit who undertook to destroy it in a far away land......the books are about his quest."

Gandalf smiled slightly. "That is a bald outline but it will suffice," he said. "In essence, Frodo destroyed the ring after many dangers, which a number of his friends shared, directly or indirectly, myself included. Sauron, the dark lord, was defeated but not destroyed, for evil can never truly be destroyed. If it was, then how would virtue show itself? It is the shadow that throws the light into definition, the darkness that makes us see the thin line of the dawn. I told him at the time that we were not saving the world for all time, but only for our own time, and that we must entrust the future to others."

For the first time Hilda could understand her visitor. She thought of Hitler, and the horrors that many former Chalet School girls had endured, and she thought of the many attrocities still going on in the world and she nodded.

Gandalf continued. "The future is here, and the others to whom we entrusted the world must now take up the burden. Sauron was more skillful and more crafty than even I believed. He made a second ring. He could not pour his power into it while the first ring existed, and it took him many a long year to even begin to recover from the terrible shock of the first ring's destruction. But recover he did, and then he began to recreate his evil symbiosis with the new ring. There were few left in Middle Earth by that time with the power to feel Sauron's growing strength, but some elves and elven-kin yet remained. It was a descendant of Arwen Evenstar who sent word to the Grey Havens that I was once again needed in Middle Earth and I did something that I had never expected to do. I took up my staff, and sailed with a few companions, back out of the West into Middle Earth. The threat was still young, and I was able to muster enough force from the great men of the West to seek out Sauron in the dark corner of Middle Earth in which he had hidden himself. We wrested the ring from him but we were unable to destroy it for the fires of Mount Doom no longer burned hot enough. So we hid it away, where none would ever find it, deep beneath the earth, and there we left it for all eternity before returning once more to our rest. But years passed and men began to delve deeper into the earth than we had thought possible and the ring was able to force its way back into the lives of men. It has taken me many years to find it again, but I have finally succeeded. It is here, in this place that you call the Chalet School."

"Oh," said Hilda for the second time that day.

oooh errr wonders if the power of the ring is what helps the *reforming* of new girls (and why we don't get many behind the scenes study scenes) Wink ETA or if it's powers of invisibility are what help Matey to be so on the spot!

#43:  Author: AnneLocation: London PostPosted: Wed Sep 15, 2004 7:20 pm

Gandalf gave Hilda scant time to digest this startling news before he continued. "I have spent many years on the trail of the one who had found the ring. I eventually traced her here to the Chalet School. Once I realised who she was it was quite easy, all the signs were there. The bearer of this particular ring has effected the lives of many people around her, apparently for the better, but the longer she bears it, the more likely it is tht the ring will warp her to its will."

Hilda looked up, shocked. "You can't possibly be talking about M..."

Gandalf cut her off, raising his hand. "No, no, dear lady, I am not talking about the OOAOML, although she is one that I will have to turn my mind to in time. A power that great and unknowing has the potential to turn deadly in time. Morgoth himself was once thought to be bright and clean...." He shook his head and returned to his topic. "No, the one I refer to is older, although she will seem to have unlimited youth, for that is the power of the ring."

"Joey", exclaimed Hilda.

"You called?" came golden tones from the doorway. Gandalf and Hilda turned sharply to see Joey standing there, looking puzzled.

That is inspired JackieJ! The pit at camp - it has to be!

****

Gandalf and Hilda stared at Joey for a second before Gandalf rose to his feet and walked over to where she stood in the doorway. "Mrs Maynard, how opportune. Please come and take a seat. My name is Gandalf the Grey and I have much to tell you."

Hilda was rather puzzled to notice that Joey seemed entirely unsurprised by the whole situation. It was as though she was used to bearded old men introducing themselves as famous literary magic-users and inviting her to take a seat in her old school library.

Joey and Gandalf seated themselves at the desk and Joey provided Hilda with another shock. "I suppose you have come about the ring," she said calmly.

"Joey! You know about the ring?" Hilda exclaimed. "How....."

Joey settled herself back in her chair and smiled. "Oh I figured it out fairly early on after I found it in that pit at guide camp. I had already read The Hobbit of course. I did have an awful lot of fun with it back then." She burst into a peal of golden laughter, obviously much diverted by the memory of some magic-assisted schoolgirl prank. She recovered herself and continued. "Obviously I don't use it anymore. Not since I read the Lord of the Rings and realised just what a dangerous thing the ring was. But I still have it safe. It is....precious to me." She finished with a strange note in her voice and Hilda thought she saw something pass behind her eyes that was not quite Joey.

Gandalf shuddered. "It has been called that before", he said. "But not by you......"

Joey sighed. "I know, I know. I have had for a little too long. People will soon begin to find it strange that I do not age. There is only so long that people can put it down to my school-girl tendencies."

Gandalf looked at her hard. "My dear Joey", he said. "I did not expect to find you so ready to recognise this. It is rare for anyone to even think about giving up a ring of power. "

Joey shrugged and looked a little embarassed. "The thing is", she said, "I don't really want any more children and one of the side effects about being kept so unnaturally young is that the babies just keep coming."

Gandalf nodded. "Of course, the ring craves life and new life above all. It will warp that new life if it gets the chance, but it covets it nevertheless. But enough of that, what must be decided is who will bear the ring through the dangers that lie ahead."

"Dangers?" Hilda asked faintly. She saw Joey nodding agreement as Gandalf continued.

"Of course, this ring must be destroyed just as the last one was. Someone must be found to bear it to its destruction. I have spent years wondering how this might be achieved now that Mount Doom has cooled and fallen into sleep. I have finally found the answer. A new fire mountain lies beneath a far away land, further even than Mordor. It has not yet made its presence felt but it is there. The ringbearer must make her way back to Middle Earth and destroy the ring in the new fire mountain."

Joey looked puzzled. "But where is Middle Earth?" she asked. "I always took it to have been our own Earth but millenia ago."

"The two worlds are linked", Gandalf said. "Just as the land where the elves now dwell is linked to Middle Earth. It is not easy to cross between them but it is possible. I brought the ring out of Middle Earth to keep it safe from Sauron. But his power has grown and sooner or later he will be able to cross over himself and then your own world will be in deadly danger."

Impressed that Joey no longer wants children!! But surely she will have to pass it on? If the analogy to LOTR's remains, then she'll need to pass it to someone who has not been infected/influenced by it. Excellent Anne! Laughing

Bearing in mind my understanding here is sketchy- but I thought that Gandalf said that if the ring bearer was pregnant, the new life would be affected by the ring...and if Lesley's point is correct, then that means that no Maynard can take it on. Hilda, perhaps? Headmistress forever....I should think Madge would love that!

How about one of Madge's for the ringbearer, carrying on with the Bilbo/Frodo analogy? I'd see Hilda more as one of the Fellowship, if Fellowship there will be.

I see someone young. Frodo was the equivalent of a teenager in human terms. I'd like to see Phil in the role. She only gets cast as a poor soul who had polio.

Hasn't gandalf already said that OOAOML is in danger of becoming evil anyway? She can't take the ring in that case! maybe Joey could pass it onto Bride - she always seemed like a sensible young person! For those of you struggling with Tolkien's works, give up on The Hobbit - it bored me stupid when I was a kid - and go straight onto LOTR - it's a much better book, and is much easier to get into. You do need to stick with it for a while though, but once you're in, it's great! Thanks for the great drabble Anne!

Oops, suddenly need one of the characters to be older than they would be in the year this is set. Please forget original 1959 setting and move it forward a couple of years!

***

Gandalf looked serious. "The ringbearer will be required to face many dangers. I cannot lie to you, ladies, it is quite possible, even probable, that the quest will fail this time. Sauron has grown wilier with time and what he still lacks in raw power, he more than makes up in guile. Our task is harder this second time, but if we succeed we will secure the safety of the joined worlds from Sauron at least for all time. Whatever other dangers may face our worlds will be mortal dangers."

Joey looked thoughtful. "My first thought would be Len", she said. "But I think she would have difficulty accepting the whole story of the ring. She has always been very practical. Also, she has Reg now....."

Gandalf shook his head. "Len is an admirable girl but this is not her battle. Besides, should we fail, you will need strong leaders here in your own world, to mount a last line of defence against the dark lord."

Hilda had been thinking hard. "The other triplets may be more readily able to accept what Gandalf tells us," she said.

Gandalf nodded. "Constance and Margot should be part of this quest, I think, but not as ringbearer. No, the ring will put a great burden on its bearer and it needs one young and unbowed." He turned to Joey. "Mrs Maynard, your daughter, Felicity, is the one of whom I speak."

Hilda was startled. "Felicity? she exclaimed. "But she is only 15!"

Joey looked thoughtful. "Felicity," she mused. "She has never reallycome into her own with her older sisters being such strong characters. But I think she has reserves of strength and character that she herself does not suspect."

"Then she shall have a chance to show her quality," Gandalf pronounced. "But who shall we send with her?"

Sam.... how 'bout Felix? BTW Anne, I'm flattered that you used my idea. I've only just found this and it's absolutely inspired!! How cool to do a LOTR crossover and I love all the similarities/analogies!! _ Gandalf's deep, rich voice and him used to being obeyed - just like Hilda but he has the upper hand ... now there's a turn-up!! Shocked - Hilda understanding Sauron by thinking about Hitler ... - all the "oh"s *g* - perfect understatement!! - and Joey's ever-youthfulness being down to having the ring Laughing Superb!! Go Felicity - I hope she can do the business! Will she have Lucy Peters and Marjorie Graves with her too? More please, Anne!

Hilda, Joey and Gandalf spent the next few hours debating the pros and cons of various candidates for the fellowship. Everyone agreed that Con and Margot should go. Joey favoured Felix, but Hilda thought that Felicity should not be torn between her twin and her quest. Josette Russell was her choice. Other candidates were Mike Maynard, Jack Lambert, Adrienne Desmoines, Ruey Richardson, Maeve Bettany and Jo Scott.

The debate was showing signs of going on well into the night, but Gandalf called a halt to the day's proceedings. "Ladies", he said. "Night has drawn in and you have a lot to think about. Let us bid goodnight to each other until the morning. I have to speak with some old companions of mine to see what other help there may be for the ringbearer. Tomorrow there will be much to do, for the ringbearer must be asked if she is willing to take up this great burden." And with that, Gandalf rose, bowed to Joey and Hilda and left the room.

Another very interesting idea for a drabble as I'm a big fan of the books. Looks good so far. As for those who couldn't get through the books, what philistines! Yes he has. We down-loaded a screen-saver of Orlando Bloom on Wednesday, and it was up to date. I really wanted on of him as Legolas.

IMHO the actors playing Aragorn and Legolas just weren't right! Legolas especially -- for one thing, he was just too hulking for an elf -- looked as though he'd leave pretty deep footprints, as did most of his compatriots! That's the problem with having read the books too many times Confused -- much harder to put aside my own version. I rather liked the hobbits though. There's a thought for a fellowship member... *looks forward to whatever Anne comes up with!*

Nah- but they looked more hobbitish (especially Frodo) than the elves looked elvish or Aragorn like the Aragorn of my imagination.

#93:  Author: AnneLocation: London PostPosted: Tue Oct 05, 2004 7:56 pm

The following day Felicity's classmates were surprised when she was called out of class to attend the study. Felicity was rarely in trouble and there were many curious looks as she left the room. Speculation became even more rife when she failed to return to classes that day....or the next. Has they been able to see into the corridor outside the Head's office they would have been no further enlightened when Felicity emerged looking extremely pensive and headed straight out of the school building towards her home. What went on in that office no-one ever knew except Hilda, Joey, Gandalf and Felicity herself.

Felicity was feeling rather shell-shocked, not by the revelations about the ring - the Maynard children had always been sure that their mother's apparently eternal youth could not be natural and this explanation was a lot more plausible than many theories that Felicity and her siblings had come up with over the years. What had floored her was her own role in this. She had accepted the quest before she fully understood what was involved and now she found herself overawed by the enormity of what lay before her.

She paused and looked at her clenched hand. Slowly, reluctantly she opened her palm and looked at the gold ring that lay there. It looked so innocuous, and yet she could sense....something. She recalled the moment when Joey had handed the ring over to her daughter. She had visibly wrestled with herself, her brow creased with effort, and when she had finally dropped the ring into Felicity's outstretched hand with a final wrench of will, Joey's shoulders had lifted noticably as though years of heavy burdens had fallen away. At the same time Felicity thought she saw a sudden glint of silver in her mother's shiny black hair, as though the years so long kept at bay had settled back upon her.

Felicity sighed. Why her? Why had she been chosen for this task? What about Len? She knew that her eldest sister would see this through to the end, no matter what, such was her strength of character. Or Con? Or Margot? With Con's particular insight or Margot's courage, surely the task could have been achieved so much better. Or what about the boys? Why had she been chosen?

Felicity shook these thoughts away, closed her hand over the ring once more and continued on her way to Freudesheim. As she walked she felt a calm grow over her and she realised that she had accepted her quest.

Upon arrival at her home she made her way into Jack's study and made a telephone call to Felix's school. She did not tell anyone what passed between her and her twin, but anyone watching might have noted that she stepped slightly more lightly upon leaving the study.

Meanwhile Gandalf was updating Hilda and Joey as to the progress he had made in recruiting the "help" for Felicity that he had mentioned. "I have been in communication with some companions of mine from the old days," Gandalf announced to the two women. "They have agreed to take up their old roles and fight against Sauron once more."

"Who are they?" asked Hilda at the same time as Joey asked "Where are they?"

Gandalf smiled. "Who are they? Well that is a difficult question to which there is no short answer." He seemed ammused and paused for a short chuckle before continuing, "but as to where they are? That is easy. They should be arriving right about......" and he cocked his head to one side as though listening to something that the two women could not hear, "...now" he concluded. As if in response to some signal, a resounding knock sounded at the door.

Gandalf stood up and went to the door. "Ladies," he said, "May I introduce to you.....", opening the door, ".......Legolas of the elves."

A tall, fine-featured young man strode into the room and bowed low to Hilda. He then turned to Joey and, with an even deeper bow, unslung a bow from his shoulder and laid it on the desk before her. "Ringbearer," he said. "My bow is at your service."

Gandalf cleared his throat. "Actually, old friend, " he said, "this is the last ringbearer. Her daughter will take over the burden of the Second Great Quest."

Legolas looked startled. "Forgive me, madam," he said, "Your youth misled me. But of course, the ring...."

Joey nodded. "I am quite looking forward to aging", she said with a musical laugh. "It will be quite a new adventure."

Gandalf interrupted. "Not, I suspect, quite as much of an adventure as lies before Felicity." Joey smiled and inclined her head in agreement as Gandalf turned back to present another new arrival. "Gimli of the dwarves...." he announced.

An extremely short, broad man with a long ginger beard entered. "At your service ladies," he muttered gruffly before dropping a large axe onto Hilda's desk, right on top of Legolas's bow. "I'm not about to let an elf come out on top," he announced with a sly, sidelong glance at Legolas who remained expressionless. Hilda suspected an old and long-running joke. Gandalf was already waving in another two arrivals.

"Aragorn and Aramir of Gondor....." he said as two strikingly similar men entered the room. The elder of the two, a man who was perhaps in his late thirties, was remarkably handsome, Hilda observed, fearing that she was blushing. As was the younger man, who was perhaps a few years younger, she observed.

Joey wrinkled her forehead. "I can understand how you two are here, Legolas and Gimli, "she commented, "I know that you sailed off to the undying lands. But you, " she turned to Aragorn. "The book had you and Arwen dying after a mortal life."

The slightly grim-expressioned Aragorn smiled, and his face lightened. "Tolkien didn't know everything," he said. "Although his accuracy was remarkable in many ways..."

Joey interrupted. "Yes, I have always wondered where he came into it", she said eagerly.

Gandalf answered her, closing the door as he did so. "We are not entirely sure. We are assuming that Tolkien was the many times decendant of someone involved in the great quest who somehow crossed over and took up residence in your world. It is not unheard of. But to keep that depth of knowledge passed down from father to son through so many generations. It is remarkable, as Aragorn has said."

#105:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Thu Oct 07, 2004 3:31 pm

Ooh, I thought Tolkien was infallible on the War of the Rings!

#106:  Author: AnneLocation: London PostPosted: Thu Oct 07, 2004 3:32 pm

Aragorn continued. "He must have speculated about the ending of our part of the story," he said. "It is true that Arwen and I lived for many happy years in Gondor, but when my eldest son was grown into manhood, Arwen and I took our leave and sailed into the west on the last ship with Samwise Gamgee. Some of the grace of elvish immortality must have passed from Arwen to me as I was still as young as the day we met. She is still there, and I will return there with Legolas, Gimli and Gandalf, when we have finally finished what we began so many years ago." He turned to the young man next to him. "This is Aramir, my many times great grandson. He will be king in Gondor after his father. He is also descended from Faramir, son of the steward, whose granddaughter married my grandson, linking the two lines."

Hilda looked at the four new arrivals with interest. "So have you just crossed over, "she asked.

Legolas shook his head. "Gimli and I have spent most of our time here for the last few years." He grinned. "We have been masquerading as actors. We have had to stick to bit parts so that no-one would take too much notice and start to wonder why we didn't age. But maybe when this is all over we will do a big blockbuster just for fun. I have always fancied Hollywood!" Gimli muttered something under his breath which no-one asked him to repeat.

At this point there came a knock at the door. "Quick, hide!" gasped Hilda. Just in time, Legolas and Gimli dived under Hilda's desk. Gandalf and Aramir hid behind the curtains while Aragorn simply tried to look unobtrusive.

Kathy Ferrars entered. "Do you have a moment to....." her voice tailed off and she stared at Hilda's desk. "What happened?" she asked in surprise, staring at the deep axe-marks in the wood. Hilda gave Kathy a look and she withered, before retreating rapidly.

"Where were we?" asked Hilda as the various visitors emerged from their hiding places.

The "withering look" episode was after the Pat/Lesley exchange btw! I am going away for 2 weeks from tomorrow but I hope to have internet access at some point in case inspiration strikes!

***

After Kathie had left and the various parties emerged from their various hiding places Gandalf called the impromptu meeting to order. "There is much to do before we can set out. We still need to establish who will make up the Fellowship. We have the five of us, Felicity, Con and Margot (if they are willing). I think the number this time should be eleven, as rumour would have that as the number of the Dark Lord's most powerful servants, the new ringwraiths. I think that Felicity's twin should be asked to join the quest. But who else to send? And once we have decided on the fellowship, there is much that they will have to learn and be told before we set off."

Legolas stepped forward. "I would like to observe the girls of this establishment in order to see who has the necessary qualities to join the quest."

Gimli snorted. "It would take the special perceptions of a dwarf for such a task, " he insisted. "We will both go look."

Gandalf surveryed them sternly. "Very well, but make sure that you are......unobtrusive." Legolas and Gimli bowed to Joey and Hilda and left the study.

A short while later the ongoing meeting was disturbed by a commotion in the corridor. Hilda, Aragorn and Gandalf peered cautiously out of the door and were a little alarmed to see a frantic-looking Legolas being pursued by a screaming mob of Chaletschool girls. As they passed at a flat-put run Gimli strolled into view.

"Don't worry about him," he guffawed. "He is just testing their speed and stamina."

Fforde's Thursday Next novels: The Eyre Affair Lost in a Good Book The Well of Lost Plots Something Rotten As far as what they're about ... for a taste, try Caz' crossover drabble, All in a Day's Work, http://www.chaletian.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1547 .

Jasper Fforde's books are really good and unputdownable. Will also stand a good few re-reads because there's a lot of subtle humour that you won't pick up first time round.

After Miss Annersley had quietly and firmly extracted Legolas from the cupboard in which he had taken refuge from the screaming mob of girls, the meeting in the study resumed.

It was Rosalie who came up with a suggestion that imediately seemed so natural that no-one could quite understand why it hadn't been made earlier. "Hilda, why don't you go on the quest?"

Hilda's jaw dropped. "Me?!" she exclaimed.

Gandalf hit the desk with his palm. "Of course, Miss Annersley, you must come. Your particular type of wisdom will be of great value to the ring bearer."

Hilda was silent for a moment, clearly thinking very deeply. After a moment she lifted her head. "I'll go, "she said determinedly. "It is my duty. But on one condition." Gandalf raised an eyebrow and Hilda continued. "I wish to choose the final member of the party. And I think that Matey should accompany us."

Silence greeted this extraordinary suggestion and Aragorn looked as though he was about to protest. Hilda raised her hand. "I insist. I think she will surprise you..."

Gandalf looked at her hard for a few seconds and then slowly nodded. "So be it," he pronounced. "The fellowship will consist of myself, Aragorn, Aramir, Legolas and Gimli for the old quest, and Felicity, Felix, Con, Margot, Miss Annersley and Matey, for the new." He stood up and looked around the room. "We leave tomorrow." he said.

Oh this is sooo good and I'm sooo glad that Hilda & Matey are going. That should give us lots of lovely moments. Are you sure you don't want to throw Nell in for good measure- just to keep Rachael happy? Very Happy

That would be lovely but if they add any more people, it won't be a fellowship, it will be a full on cavalry! Very Happy However, if you did see your way to giving her a role ... (not as a baddie mind!)

But she could have become slowly and corrupted - they could be like Gandalf (except you've already got him) and Saruman Laughing Liz
