Mechanically Ted started to pack up their possessions. It gave him something to do without having to think about the last half hour.
He had held his wife in his arms and they had talked quietly. Money was tight, but he had had the best doctors for her. However there was nothing more they could do.
‘Look after yourself’, she had said. ‘Take our baby to that school Karl mentioned. I am sure they will be able to help, and then you can get a good job.’
Then her eyes had closed. Ted kissed her tenderly and laid her back on the pillows. She was smiling peacefully.
He glanced at the cot in the other corner of the room – the Robin was slumbering peacefully too.
