Why is Mummy upstairs? I want to see her! I need the ribbon tying on my hair.

It’s not fair! I sit on the stairs and gloom. Peggy offered to tie it, but she’s just a cousin.

Nurse says I can go up now. She’s smiling, why? I don’t care, I’ll go up and see Mummy so she can comb my hair and tell me how beautiful I am. I like to hear that. I am important. I am the daughter of the house.

Mummy’s in bed - why? And what’s this in the cradle?

No - not a sister!

Did Sybil ever really become reconciled to Josette?

You can see where Jo got her hate of people praising the childrens' looks to their faces.

It's nice to see some thoughts of what Sybil thought of herself when she was a little girl.
