#1: Daddy Author: Rosie, Location: Huntingdonshire/BangorPosted: Sat Mar 26, 2005 4:18 pm It is a late summer evening, or perhaps that should be night, for it is dark and the stars are already gleaming in the deep blue sky. Out in the garden, the sound of a gurgling spring carries clearly on the still night air. There is the delicate fragrance of violets and headier honeysuckle, all mixed together with the lingering scent of summer and warm grass.
A small girl is sitting on a swing which hangs between two great old trees. Her small, sturdy body propels her higher and higher, as if she is trying to reach the very heavens themselves. She wears only a cotton frock, but it is a warm night. Short fair plaits bob on her shoulders in rhythm with her movements. If we could see her face, we would realise that her eyes are full of dreams, hope, and longing.
"It’s not fair," she mutters to herself. "Why should they have a father around, and get to see him every day, when they’re so mean and hateful?" By ‘they’, she means the two girls staying at the vicarage for the summer; despite the hopes of her guardians it has not been a successful friendship. "Oh, I know Father is famous and everything, and that he must go away, but I want him so much! How can I not know my own father? Six years is such a long time, and I was so little when he left that I don’t remember him at all; I only know what he looks like from a photograph! Oh Daddy, when shall we see you again?"
Tears begin to well up in those blue eyes, and she swings harder to banish them, blinking rapidly. And so we shall leave her, this small, sad, little girl swinging for the stars…
