This is a final Secret Santa gift for coddle. It's a little late and quite short but I hope she likes it anyway...

The three Maynard triplets were running around the kitchen in a state of high commotion. Con, with her dark eyes shining brightly, was bouncing from foot to foot in eager anticipation and coming perilously close to landing on Anna’s toes.

“Anna, is it ready? Is it nearly done?”

“Patience little one, two more minutes.”

Margot was standing on one of the sturdy kitchen chairs with a look of great concentration on her face. Now at the height of the work surface, she had been given the responsibility of decanting jam from the large glass jar into a dainty china bowl. Robin was standing next to her and keeping a cautious eye out for potential spillages whilst arranging some Christmas roses in an old cut glass vase.

“Auntie Robin, let me, let me!” Len jumped up and down next to the table. Robin obligingly lifted it down to Len’s level so that the small girl could pop the last few flowers into place.

“Can I carry it? I won’t drop it, I promise!”

Robin placed it in her hands rather gingerly. “Be very careful with it then, hold it with both hands. I’ll come and hold the doors open for you. Margot, Con, are you both ready?” Con had just been handed the freshly filled toast rack and nodded importantly. Robin took Margot’s hands, swung her down from the chair onto the floor and the little procession wound its way into the morning room. Anna brought up the rear with a tray containing the rest of the breakfast.

The room looked wonderful in the early morning with pale winter sunshine shining in through the window. Brightly coloured paper chains were hung across the room, fastened on each wall and a large tree stood in one corner, the branches liberally festooned with tinsel, strings of beads, baubles and glass ornaments.

The triplets added their contributions to the table and were then rounded up into a line by Robin who pointed them out of the room and upstairs. “Remember girls, be quiet until you get into the bedroom” she warned them.

As they reached the top of the stairs Joey was standing by the bedroom door. Despite Robin’s warnings, the triplets were unable to stay silent and crowded round their mother with excitable chatter. “Girls, shush” she said in a low tone, putting a finger to her lips. “You don’t want to wake Papa up just yet do you? That would spoil the surprise. Tiptoe in now.”

Jack was sleeping peacefully, undisturbed by the murmurings from outside the bedroom. He was still somewhat pale and the lines etched into his face by his illness were still apparent but he had recovered a great deal of his strength since he had returned. Joey and the girls had been very careful to let him rest as much as possible but after all, this was Christmas morning.

“Papa, Papa, Merry Christmas!”

As Jack struggled out of his deep sleep and into wakefulness, he was met by the sight of his daughters standing next to the bed. “Hello, my lovely girls.” He gathered the three up in a warm hug and kissed them all. “Merry Christmas to you too.”

Tugging back the sheets, Con shouted “Come wiv us Papa!”

Laughing, he asked “But where are we going?”

“Come and see!”

A short squabble ensued as the three fought over who should hold Papa’s hands and take him downstairs. Unusually, for once it was Margot who lost out but she consoled herself with Joey and the pair led the way down the stairs and into the morning room.

“Papa, we made you Christmas!” she announced loudly once everyone was there.

"Christmas breakfast, Papa. Toast an' everything!" added Len. Con, ever tactful, chipped in with "Margot, you said it wrong!"

Three hand-drawn cards and a pile of presents marked Jack’s place at the head of the table. There was a distinct lump in his throat as he viewed the room and a slight shudder ran through him at the thought that he could so easily have lost all this.

"Thank you girls," he said quietly, gathering them up again for another hug. "That's the best present I could have wished for."
