Post subject:  DISCUSSION: Favourite Christmas songs

Didn't want to hijack the Christmas reads/films thread!

Mine are:

The Pogues - Fairytale of New York
Wham - Last Christmas
David Essex - A Winter's Tale
Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody (of course  )
Wizzard - I wish it could be Christmas every day
Girls Aloud - Not tonight Santa
Band Aid - Do they know it's Christmas (the 1984 version)
Cliff Richard - Mistletoe and Wine

And I heard a lovely Gaelic version of Silent Night by Enya the other day.

Current favourites are:

Whence is that goodly fragrance flowing (French carol)
Masters in this hall (French carol)
Sussex carol
Hark the herald angels
Once in Royal David's city
For unto us a child is born (Handel's Messiah)
The Woodpigeon Carol by Guy Turner

I actually rather dislike most of the 'modern' Chrismas songs .... with the exception of Slade :D .

I love hearing the Transiberian Orchestra on the radio. Unfortunately I can't currently remember specific songs of theirs!

Fi, I'm not too fond of most modern Christmas songs myself, although I do like "I'll Be Home for Christmas"

My favourite classics would probably have to be "Away in a Manger" and "Stille Nacht".

I love the Coventry Carol at the moment, having only discovered it this year when some carol singers at work were performing it.

Away in a Manger is probably my all time favourite but I also really love the Huron Carol which I sang at primary school.

Christmas song-wise my favorite is Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses (NOT the Spice Girls version!)

I have a deep and vehement hatred of nearly all pop covers of Christmas carols, to the point that I have to leave stores when they are playing. :x

I particularly like Gaudete, the Sussex Carol, Angels We Have Heard on High, The Huron Carol, I Wonder as I Wander, Adestes Fideles, Il Est Ne, Le Devin Enfant, Ding, Dong Merrily on High, As With Gladness Men of Old, Once in Royal David's City and The Holly and the Ivy. I also have a soft spot for the Coventry Carol, aka the world's most depressing Christmas Carol.

There's a recording by Ancient Cutures with the Vancouver Chamber Choir called the Miracle of Christmas - choral arrangements with a South American accompaniment - which is lovely. [/list]

Back in the mid 1980s I went to an old fashioned Christmas Carol concert at the English Folk Dance and Song Society in London. I absolutely loved the traditional carols we sang there, but can't remember many names and have rarely heard them since, unfortunately. It included wassailing songs and I think one called Masters in this Hall.

Stop the Cavalry...I can't help it. And the Pogues one....

and for carols I love The Boar's Head carol, and the Little Road to Bethlehem[/i]

Oooh - Master's in this Hall is a lovely carol - if a bit of a big sing. It's in one of the first 3 OUP Carol books, alas, cannot remember which...

I'm with Alison on all but the Girls Aloud one (haven't heard it - I think I left the UK before it came out  ). Wham's Last Christmas is my favourite of those.
As for carols, I absolutely love Hark the Herald Angels Sing. I also like Once In Royal David's City and Oh Come All Ye Faithful - there's nothing like singing them in a packed church at Midnight Mass.

Echoes everyone else's selections, though I'm not enamoured of the pop versions of anything - must be a generational thing, though - I much prefer 'traditional' renderings!!

I would add three other items:

Mary's Boy Child - the original version, sung by Harry Belafonte, not the more modern one.

The German Carol 'Still, Still, Still' - don't understand the German words, but the tune is lovely.

The chorus 'The Shepherds' Farewell' from Berlioz' oratorio 'The Childhood of Christ' - I'm sure most of you who sing in choirs will recognise it.

I like humorous ones like Alvin and the Chipmunks' The Christmas Song , Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer and The 12 Pains of Christmas. Also Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas (sung by Judy Garland), Feliz Navidad, Father Christmas by the Kinks, Christmastime Is Here sung by the Peanuts gang, Snoopy's Christmas, Carol of the Bells, We Need A Little Christmas sung by the Muppets, Santa Baby, Christmas in the Trenches by John McCutcheon, and Marshmallow World. Oh yes, can't forget The Twelve Days of Christmas by Bob and Doug McKenzie.

A lot of the pop christmas songs do nothing at all for me (possibly due to several years of waitressing where we had ONE xmas CD on repeat for the entire month of December....)
I do love a lot of the traditional carols, despite the fact that my religious beliefs swither between Atheist and Agnostic. One of my favourites is 'The Sans Day Carol' which I believe is a cornish carol.

I very much like Fairy Tale of New York, but that is probably the only modern Christmas song I like... I went to a carol service at the cathedral here last week, and as well as singing lots of the old favourites (I still feel I excelled myself in the Welsh ones), the choir sang some of the lesser known ones (or ones more likely to be slaughtered by the congregation...). Sadly I forget what they were and have mislaid the order of service...

I love their Christmas Canon (I may have the name wrong, but it is sung to Pachabel's Canon)

I also love Little Drummer Boy and greatly amused an old housemate by puh-rumb-a-bum-bumming while walking around the apartment. I really like the Peace on Earth/Drummer Boy combo by...um...two male singers.

We Need a Little Christmas - though I find it very sad (first saw it in the movie it was written for - Auntie Mame)

I love proper carols/hymns the best, generally.

Oh and Belleau Wood - by Garth Brooks (I know), it is about the Christmas ceasefire.

I like that too - knew one singer was Bing Crosby, but had to 'google' to find the other - David Bowie.

I love this one too. We sung this at our choral society christmas concert this year including Herod's solo and the Chorus of the Soothsayers. It is lovely.

I love all the crooners... Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra's Christmas songs. :) They make me feel really Christmassy and relaxed.

Veni, Veni, Emanuel (if you count Advent hymns)
Angels We Have Heard on High
What Child is This?
Gaudete
Joy to the World
We Three Kings
I could continue for a very long time....

Oh, and I agree that, of the less traditional, 'Christmas in the Trenches' wins hands down.

Holy Child (from Merrily to Bethlehem) is my favourite school carol, O Little Town of Bethlehem is my favourite carol and my favourite Christmas song is A Spaceman Came Travelling - Chris de Bergh.

I love Christmas music though, so I like lots more!

I love lots of carols, especially those that have a decent alto (!), but I have recently discovered a song called 'Thorns in the Straw' which has me in tears every time.

O little town of Bethlehem - this was my mother's favourite and I still can't sing it without a lump in my throat.
See amid the winter snow
It came upon a midnight clear
Love came down at Christmas
and of course...The little drummer boy
