Post subject:  Special Award for Services to Chalet School Fanfiction

A Special Award for an Outstanding Contribution to Chalet School Fanfiction.

We would like to nominate Lesley Ann Green to receive a specially created award. Over several years she has made an outstanding contribution to the field, both in her own writing and in the way she has inspired and encouraged other writers.

Her epic Real Chalet School series has grown beyond all imagining, including her own and has not only developed many of the original characters in believable ways, but has also established new characters that have merged seamlessly with those created by E M Brent-Dyer. This series is now established as a firm favourite with Lesley's many fans.

In both the aforementioned series and in her published book Hilda Annersley – Headmistress, Lesley has shown herself capable of sustaining a story over the full length of a novel, and of developing both plot and character in a way that keeps her readers gripped. She has shown she can amuse, horrify, entertain, scare, and reduce her audience to both tears and laughter.

In addition she has written a number of shorter stories, all of which show these same qualities. She has written both serious and funny stories; some of which fit well into the world created by E M Brent-Dyer and others of which would horrify her but are well suited to the purpose for which they were written. She is renown as the 'Queen of Cliffs' being one of the world's foremost exponents of the art of leaving people dangling. This is shown in almost all her writing.

As well as writing, Lesley has also published a book, as mentioned above, Hilda Annersely – Headmistress. This achievement was accomplished against great opposition and has proved successful, solidifying her reputation. It is not only a personal success for Lesley, but has inspired others to believe in their own work and also to seek to publish their work. Lesley has given those seeking to publish lots of support, encouragement and useful advice, working for their benefit.

It is not only those seeking publication that she has encouraged, but many writers of Chalet School fanfiction have been encouraged by both her public and private comments on their work. Many who considered quitting have been inspired to continue by her encouragement. She has provided people with thoughtful insights into their writing and made suggestions that have improved and inspired them. Her knowledge of the genre has proved extensive, and she is always willing to share her expertise with other writers and fans, both established and new.

In presenting this award we wish to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution Lesley has made, and to thank her for it. Long may you prosper!

Thought this rather appropriate for everyone.

After the Award had been made and the recipient made her somewhat boring acceptance speech, the table near the rear of the venue settled back to enjoying the free meal and drinks. For some reason, not immediately obvious, the table was somewhat isolated from the rest. Almost as though other people either did not see them or did not want to be associated with them. The reporter, eager to find more views on the last award winner, found herself walking over to speak with the people seated around the table. The layout for this table was rather strange, although, like all tables, it was round, there seemed to be a definite edge to it, one side where no one, regardless of their hurry, could pass. The side was shrouded in darkness and the reporter found it difficult to keep her eyes looking toward the area, they seemed to slide past.

“Can I join you?” she addressed her question to the person she thought, just, qualified as the leader of the group.

The woman smiled, “You not only ‘can’,” she said, her posture seeming to show vast amusement, “but you ‘may’ join us.”

“Fell into that one,” the woman sat next to her remarked, “and you a journalist, too.”

“How did you know I was a journalist?”

The first woman replied, “Possibly Nell was able to deduce your profession because of the Press tag you are wearing and the notebook and pen you carry. She is a scientist so I expect she could tell.”

“And because she’s the only one other than the serving staff that’s been able to see us,” the second woman replied, “so sit down then,” she continued, “we don’t bite…”

“…Often,” another woman, sat on the opposite side of the table added quietly. The journalist looked across into dark eyes that seemed to bore straight into her soul.

‘This woman was dangerous,’ was her immediate thought, ‘very dangerous…and yet…’ she looked round. Granted the woman was wearing handcuffs and, behind her chair stood an armed guard, but, at this table she was being treated the same as almost everyone else. And, although the journalist knew for a fact that she would not want to have to oppose this woman, at the same time she knew that, if this woman trusted you she would sacrifice anything for you.

“You mustn’t bite people, it’s naughty,” it was a relief to look away from those dark eyes and across to the next speaker, there was very little hidden about him. A little boy, green eyed and with blond hair, he was about five years old. He continued, “But if you are very, very little, like my cousin Jake, then biting is not naughty, it’s just being a baby. And he don’t have many teeth anyway.”

“Alright, monster, the lady has heard enough, why don’t you finish your juice?” The woman seated next to the little boy was enough like him to proclaim a family relationship, but, instead of blond hair, hers was a rich auburn. She looked over at the journalist, “So, did you have anything particular that you wanted to ask us, then?” Like the previous two speakers this woman had a recognisable Australian accent, while the first two women were definitely English.

“Well, yes, I did want to ask all of you about that last award,” the journalist replied, her nervousness causing her first word to come out as ‘Waall’, betraying her birth place as somewhere in the Southern states of the USA, “I understand that all of you know the recipient?”

“You could say that,” another woman said, with amusement. She was sat next to the dangerous one and helping her to eat with the handcuffs. She reached across to pour some wine for the journalist who saw that there were faint white scars around each wrist. “We’ve all been a part of her,” she indicated herself, the handcuffed woman and the mother and little boy, “since she wrote the third part.”

“While I was part of her from before she even started writing RCS,” the journalist looked across, the young woman who had just spoken was blond, with startlingly blue eyes, her accent was also English, but a very different dialect, the journalist recognised it as a Cockney accent.

“And we have been a part of her for far, far longer,” the quiet woman, the leader, continued.

An ear-splitting cry suddenly rang out from the shrouded ‘corner’ of the round table. The journalist spun round, realising, even as she did so that none of the other patrons in the room had heard anything, only those at this table. She gazed in horror at the figure revealed, as she did she heard the prison guard shooting into the dark, with no effect.

“Enough!” The quiet voice said quickly, “Elinor cannot hurt anyone and she is not really here anyway. All we’re seeing are faint shadows of her. She is in a Hell of her own making.” Although her voice was calm the journalist noticed that both the scientist and the woman with the Cockney accent were resting their hands on her shoulders, giving support to her.

“But what is she?” the journalist asked with fascination.

“A representation of evil,” the scientist replied, “something we escaped from - in the first episode, if you’re interested.”

At the words there was another howl from the figure before it suddenly disappeared. The leader looked across at the journalist and smiled, “It was said that Elinor was the accumulation of all evil in all characters written by an earlier author,” she said, “in the same way we,” she indicated those round the table, “are a representation of characters written by the recipient of that award.”

“So do you feel it is deserved, then?”

The people round the table looked at each other, “That isn’t for us to say,” the woman with the scars replied, “we are here more to add our thanks to hers. Because we, none of us, would be here were it not for the very people who voted for this award.”

“We all, even those two,” the prisoner pointed across at the two Englishwomen, “would never have come into being without their support, encouragement and love - even though, first time I appeared, they all wanted my head,” she grinned.

“That was because you’d just hit Hilda round the face,” the young mother put in.

“Yeah, I know, but the reactions to that, to all the other stuff she’s written…”

“To the book too,” the young Cockney put in, “that would never have got published without all the support from all of them.

“Basically,” the scientist said, “we feel that they should take a great deal of the credit.”

“True,” the leader continued, “we would never have existed without them," she looked over at the journalist with some intensity, her blue-grey eyes sparkling, "please pass this on. Thank you everyone.”
