#1: Book review - single women in inter-war Britain Author: Alison H, Location: ManchesterPosted: Thu Sep 27, 2007 8:51 pm — I haven't actually read this book so I didn't
want to put this in "Recommendations", but I read this review of it
whilst on holiday - the Daily Mail being the free newspaper provided on
the plane! - and thought it looked interesting: it's here. Has anyone read it?
#2: Author: Carys, Location: LondonPosted: Thu Sep 27, 2007 9:05 pm — We had a lecture on the "Lost Generation" when I
was at uni. My lecturer said that it was largely a myth that the war
had deprived women of husbands. Huge numbers of women emigrated to the
Empire in the search of husbands, there were hardly any white women in
India when the British colonial presence is taken into account. The
women that remained in UK and didn't marry was roughly the same as pre
war patterns.
It's hard to argue with the statistics quoted in the book and
article (I think I read another review in The Guardian) but I think the
scenario wasn't as clear cut as the author of that book paints it to be.
