Post subject:  Joey meets an old girl

Had this idea.
Hope you like it.

“Joey! Josephine Bettany! Do you remember me? We were together in school.”
Joey looked at the speaker. It was a charming face. Golden curls surrounding a round face, blue eyes, a small but masterful nose and a wide smiling mouth. Not a face one would forget easily. But Joey with a shock realized that she did not know the speaker. She wondered if she was a typical fan who said things to come near to the popular author. For Joey was exactly that. Joey Maynard was a very beloved children’s author. Her books were universally liked by girls of all ages.
“ How is your elder sister and your brother her twin? Is he still in India?”
‘Well she must know me’ thought Jo. ‘She is talking about Madge and Dick and knew Dick was in India and Madge’s twin. She cannot be some imposter’
“My name is Joey Maynard now. I married Dr Jack. Are you married?” asked Jo cleverly thinking that her married name would give her a clue to her identity. After all Jo was supposed to be the best head girl ever with whom one always had to be wide awake to be able to catch Jo on the wrong foot.
“Yes. I am married. I am now Mary Brown” the lady replied “My daughter is a great fan of your books. I told her we were in the same school together. Are you alright now? You used to be sick a lot”
Joey was getting convinced that the lady really knew her. She knew about her illness. Looking at Joey now no one could suspect that she used to fall ill at slightest cause. But who was she. Joey tried to recall all the Mary’s she knew, but could not find anyone who fitted the person before her. And Joey was supposed to know all the Chalet girls. Didn’t she call them for English tea when they joined school. And the woman had said she was in school with her.
“Where are you now? Are you in Europe?” Joey asked another clever question.
“No I was never in Europe. In fact we are planning to go there this year.”
That narrowed down the possibilities. So Tirol, Switzerland was out. But then in other places, Joey did not attend school She was already a married woman. Well there was a time when Joey had taught in school. Did she mean she was a teacher? But how many teachers were called Mary?
Joey was starting to feel worried. Was there some one in school about whom she did not know? But how could it be possible? As an important member of school, all the lists of new and old girls were always sent to her. Even when she was in Canada. Was it possible that she had worked in the kitchen? But then she would not be so familiar with her. It was perplexing.
“Where is Grizel nowadays?” the woman was speaking.
Joey’s mind was in a whirl. ‘She knew Grizel. Was she, Joey, forgetting? Was she becoming old and senile? But she was a chalet girl. What was the matter with her? Why couldn’t she remember?’ Joey thought in dismay.
“Didn’t you go to Tirol after you left school? Your sister started a small school there didn’t she? Rosalie and Mary were going to go there. Is it closed now? Did you visit our old school in Traverton?”
Joey’s heart was singing. She was not senile. She smiled and said “Sorry I could not recognize you. You see I was very small when I left England and as it is I missed many days at school due to my illness. But it is nice to meet an old acquaintance. Do keep in touch. Do you want an autographed copy of my book for your daughter? Here it is. Thanks and Goodbye”

Yes, there was school before the CS. :)

Thank you, Mohini.

(Hmm, I wonder if Mrs. Brown is tempted to keep the autographed copy for herself. )
