...is a great character, in my opinion. There's no hint of insecurity or unsureness about her - her manner is lazy, comfortable and confident. She doesn't feel under pressure to fall in with the crowd, but she's got a kind personality and goes out of her way to keep an eye on young Samaris. She's American, but is drawn differently from Evadne, Cornelia or Louise. I think she's drawn very strongly by EBD.

Hope it's ok to start character discussions in this forum *smiles ingratiatingly at mods* Very Happy

Samantha makes me smile in that she actually says that she doesn't want a career and she just wants to get married and have children. So many of the others in the U.K./Swiss books - e.g. Julie Lucy - have great plans for their careers ad then just get married and have kids anyway. Samantha's a bit different in that she actually says that to start with Very Happy !

Yes, that's one of the things I love about her - she's okay saying everything! She says she'd rather not dance once, and when her partner is a bit shocked, Samantha reacts with an easy 'next time honey' or something like that.

I really like her too - actually I like both the Sams (I love the way Samaris plays the flute for Phil and Geoff Very Happy). This may be a bit silly and may completely be my imagination but although she's clear about just wanting to get married etc, she feels to me a much more modern character than some of the others, even established figures like the Maynards etc. Does that make sense?

I agree she is more of a modern character now I come to think of it. She has a more casual manner than the typical CS girl. Maybe she was a taste of the future for the Chalet School - someone who didn't feel the need to throw herself into all their traditions, as shown by the dancing comment.

I like Samantha too, and I wish she had featured more in later books, as Samaris did.

I think Samantha seems very modern too. Although she does talk about getting married, I get the impression that she's doing it because that's what she wants - not because she thinks it's expected of her. I think she'd make a great mother - she's very protective of Samaris and Minette. She's a very strong character who does what she wants, but without being overbearing. I think she's thoughtful and intuitive, not just interfering. I'd love to see a drabble about Samantha. She'd make a very interesting Head Girl!

Samantha always reminded me of Sadie in one of Blyton's St Clare books. And I liked Sadie a lot too! Wink
