Post subject:  Books: Peace Comes to the Chalet School

Published in 2005 by Girls Gone By and written by Katherine Bruce. There is a summary here. As KB is on the board, if anyone has any burning issues that they'd like her to answer, I'm sure you could post them here

The end of the War is fast approaching and the School prepares to take a full part in the Victory festivities. Normal school issues are also dealt with and Guides play a very big part in this book.

Any opinions on this filler? Do you think it chimes with EBD's writing style? Did you enjoy seeing Margia Stevens again? What about the way that the loose ends were tidied up for Gertrud Beck and for Betty Wynne-Davies? Did you find all the appendices helpful or interesting?

Please raise any discussion points about this book below :D

I liked this book very much - my only quibble was that I can't help wondering what on earth Matey would have said about the state of their uniforms after the tracking games when they had Guides!!!!

But it is an excellent fill-in, none the less.

I really enjoyed Peace. I felt that it was much more in keeping with EBD's style than some of the other fillers, and I liked it more because of this. It was good to see Margia again. She was such a strong character in Tirol and EBD just forgets about her. I was really interested to read about her background and war work in Australia. I also enjoyed seeing Betty again and I felt it was a shame she couldn't find the courage to apologise to the twins in person, but it did show her in a very human light.

I loved this book and what KB had to cut. I really hope the bits about Marilyn Evans she cut out manage to make it to another book (hint, hint).
I loved the chapters on Margia and reading about her story and about Miss Stewert with her letter to Nell and Hilda. I also liked reading about Gwensi having her book accepted and seeing Lois as a Prefect. My only negative thought is this; it did seem to jump aroung at times and so at times didn't flow so well, however I know that can be a problem when writing about a term about a group not just following one person. All up though it is one of my favourties and I do like reading whatever KB writes as she does keep the flavour and essence of EBD and develops the charcters well.

BTW I also liked what she wrote about Bianca and would love to see a book dedicated to all the old girls as in there is a chapter for each old girl which explains what happens to them after they leave school.

I too liked Peace and loved how it addressed the end of the War. Is there a transcript of this available as my copy is in a box far away and I only read once before I left...

Secondly, I would love to read that book with a chapter about each of the Old Girls. Any takers? :)

This book is one of my favourite fillers.

I love the way it complete's the war story's arc in a way that the original books didnt.

I really enjoyed this, probably more so than any of the other fill-ins I've read. That's mostly due to the fact that the wartime books are my favourites anyway, and KB did such a good job of capturing the spirit of those books and the period. The end of the war would have been a hugely significant event for the school, and it's good to see it portrayed.

I also really liked this one, especially all the guiding parts, and Margia's visit, and the introductory staff room scene, and....

I think the only disappointing bit (besides all that was cut -- so what if it had ended up the size of a phone book?) was VE Day itself. I somehow expected more of a celebration, and would certainly have made a big deal about staying up until 9 to hear the king's speech. As it is, the time between Churchill at 3 and the king gets elided into Miss A's talk after Churchill,a few songs, washing up for the next meal -- and then they're listening to the king before supper is even served? I can't believe such sticklers as the GGBP editors let that slide. It's arguably the most important day of the term!
