Post subject:  Books: The Chalet School Newsletters

From 1959 to 1969, EBD and Chambers ran The Chalet Club for fans. Newsletters from this club were published and circulated twice a year. They contain new information about the characters and settings, advice from EBD on how to write, letters and questions from fans, and lots of general insight into how and why she wrote the series. These are now all collected in one volume, which was published by GGBP in 2005.

So, any opinions on these? Did you find them a good or bad addition to the rest of the Chalet corpus? Did everyone else (like me!) cry at the last issue which told of EBD's death?

Please post any opinions you have on the Newsletters below :D

I find them quite interesting to dip in to, but I don't actually read them as such. However, as a child I know I would have been thrilled to have received them in the post!

I did get them in the post and regret that I never actualyy entered a competition! However they did vary. One was to list favourite books to see if your list matched EBD's which seemed impossible. Another was 'What I think of Ruey Richardon' as though she was some multi-faceted literary creation!

I haven't read them but, oh boy, I'm impressed that Mel was an original member!

I think they're fab. More as piece of social history than anything else - I think they're rather sweet. And the little bits of information on characters are interesting too.

I was a member too. I remember being rather disappointed in many of the newletters at the time. I always expect too much I think. What I did enjoy was sticking savings stamps on a special sheet and sending it off to Chambers when full for the latest 'gaily jacketed@ Chalet book.

I too was a member of the club and received my newsletter in the post. I never did enter any competitions but I did write to EBD a few times and an extract from one of my letters appeared in a newsletter and is therefore in the book. It was exciting to see my name in print both in the letter and in the book.

I like the newsletter book as it shows that fans of CS were around all over the world and likes to keep in touch with each other - the CBB of the time maybe. It was nice to know what books were going to be published so you knew what to look for in Smiths (other book shops do exist but not round here back then) and you knew to start saving up - or scheme for birthday/Christmas.

I did actually keep my origianal newsletters until I had a de-clutter a few years ago.
