Post subject:  The School: Favourite School Location

The Chalet school moves several times, from the Austrian Tyrol, to Guernsey, to England at Plas Howell, to Wales and St Briaval's Island, and finally to Switzerland.

Which is your favourite school location and why? Which school location do you like the least?

Not that it would have changed my vote, but why don't you have an option for the Gornetz Platz?

There's something about the picture of the Tiernsee painted by EBD in the earlier books which captured my heart and imagination as a teenager. Surprisingly a visit to the Achensee as an adult didn't disappoint me.

If only so we can see how few people vote for it!

I agree with Lottie re way Tyrol was represented by EBD and I also was not disappointed when I visited as an adult. Tyrol would get my vote every time.

I voted for Tyrol, too, because the depiction of the area seems so realistic, and the books of this period are so charming. I really like the idea of St Briavels, though, and think EBD conveyed well the geography of the place and the adventures there.

The Switzerland location is probably everyone's least favourite, simply because it doesn't feel authentic, and isn't conveyed with the sense that EBD had actually been there and seen the place.

Loved the Tyrol; Armishire and Guernsey prob second equal, followed by Welsen (liked Oberland) then St Briavel's (always sounded so cold) and lastly Switzerland.

I see no-one's voted for it yet, though  . Switzerland's such a lovely country - all those lakes and mountains and chocolate :D !- but EBD, probably because she'd never been there, just didn't bring it across the way she does with Austria.

Tyrol is my favourite. I like Plas Howell a lot and I think that EBD describes St Brivals really well, even though her Geography is really flawed when describing where it is.
I could never imagine the Platz as vividly as the above three locations and there was so little written about Guernsey that I feel we didn't get a chance to get to know it.

I also love Tyrol - it's described in such loving detail, with real enthusiasm and charm. We also see much more of the local inhabitants and their interactions with the school.

Interestingly, Plas Howell is the location where I have the least vivid impression of the surroundings. I can picture Tyrol, and the geography of the lake, school, town and San very vividly. Even in Switzerland I've got a clear view of the School and San, and how it relates to the nearest town. At St Briaval's, I can imagine the school, the ferry, the beach and the surrounding Islands.

For Plas Howell, it's very fuzzy - I don't even have a clear picture of the school itself. I wonder if it's because, being in a 'normal' location in England, EBD felt less need to describe the details, assuming that her readers could fill in the blanks themselves? The Plas Howell *stories* on the other hand, are some of my favourites.

I voted for the Tyrol, of course -- exotic in so many ways (the setting, the travel, the food, the languages) but I do have a soft spot for the St. Briavels' years as I like a lot of the characters (Tom, Bride, Dickie, etc.) who come to the fore in that period.

I am with all those who voted for the Tyrol. It always seemd such a beautiful place to me when I read the books growing up and one of things I liked most about it was the fact that the school is so involved with the local people and community. I also agree with those who said it did not disappoint when they visited - it still is beautiful and the books help you to see how it must have been when it was less built up and even more rural!

I've always loved the Tyrol best of all the locations. EBD's descriptions of the places and the people were so vivid.

I went to the Tyrol on my honeymoon well over twenty five years ago and so much of the scenery was still just as she had described it. I almost expected to see Joey and Co around every corner!!

Tyrol for me because I could visualise it so clearly as a child. It feels real - the locations and the people who surround the school.

I did hesitate over Plas Howells but then I decided that although that's my favourite part of the series, it isn't about the location.

I voted for Plas H because that's my favourite period in the series too, and because I know the area, but I was very torn between that and the Tyrol, as the magical quality of the early books does draw one in . . .

Tirol first, that was easy!

Second favourite probably the Gornetz Platz as the first books I read were in Switzerland.

Least favourite, St Briaval's, just seemed too contrived and unreal.

I loved the books about the island and Plas Howells since they were set a lot nearer home. The trips taken by the girls seemed more possible for me to follow. In fact I am having a short break to Birmingham next week and we will be visiting Cadbury World (again!). I shall of course be rereading the relevant chapter before I go.
