'Sharlie's Kenya Diary' was published in 1951, the same year as 'The Chalet School and Rosalie', 'Carola Storms the Chalet School' and the other three Geography readers ('Verena Visits New Zealand', 'Bess On Her Own in Canada' and 'A Quintette in Queensland'). A brief summary of all four, with some quotes from 'Sharlie's Kenya Diary', can be found here. I haven't been able to find a transcript, though if anyone has one or knows where one can be found, please PM me and I will update the post!

Have you ever read 'Sharlie's Kenya Diary'? If yes, what did you think of it? If not, why not, and would you ever consider doing so? Does it fit well with the other geography readers?

Please discuss these and any other points below.

I haven't read it, but just in case we have any lottery winners/millionaires/people with private incomes on the board I thought I should point out that there is a copy available from abebooks.com at the very reasonable price of $512.02  :D

Far too much! It's another of the geogrpahy readers, so pretty rare. But there's nothing to it.

About £300 - and that's at today's exchange rate, which is the best for weeks!

I haven't read this, but presumably it gave EBD some ideas for A Chalet Girl From Kenya, and maybe the other "readers" gave her some ideas too. Although there aren't that many CS characters from other parts of the Empire/Commonwealth - Jo Scott and Emerence Hope are the only two who immediately spring to mind, and I think Miss Moore was Canadian but I might have imagined that (there are several pupils from the USA but I don't think there are any from Canada) - a lot of British characters emigrate to Australia, New Zealand, Canada or South Africa. I know that emigration from Britain was far more common between the wars and in the late '40s and the '50s than it is now, but, even allowing for that, quite a high proportion of mistresses from the early days seem to end up emigrating! Of course, that was before it became common for mistresses to snare doctors ...

First time I saw this title I thought it was an adventure that Sharlie Andrews had before coming to teach at CS. I didnt know about the habit EBD had of recycling names!
