Post subject:  Lines unlikely to be seen in a CS novel ...

I was watching Mock the Week earlier and one of the rounds of scenes we'd like to see was "unlikely lines from the new Harry Potter book". I thought perhaps we could try this on the board doing "Lines unlikely to be seen in a CS novel?" If this is successful we could perhaps try, "unlikely lines to be said by Joey Maynard" or whatever but should perhaps see how it goes ... If you've never seen the programme, there are scenes on a certain video sharing website. (I won't include a link as they may be inappropriate for some readers/viewers).

I wasn't sure whether or not to put this here or in St. Hild's since, certainly on Mock the Week, these often end up being rather er, risque, however decided to post here and see how things go! Mods - if you think this would be better elsewhere, please move it!

I'll start us off:

“Here girl, here girl, here girl, good girl!” called Miss Annersley. “Now lie down in your basket, down I said! What a good girl!” she continued, as Head Girl, Len Maynard, did as she was bid.

Joey Bettany's maths were good, but her literary skills were extremely poor. She had no imagination, her use of grammar made her writing unintelligable and she couldn't spell. She intended to be an authoress.

The doctor looked at them. 'You are very young, Joey and I am going to take it upon myself to prophesy after all. I have never read such a load of sentimental trash as this Elsie book. You should never become an authoress.'

'I read your story in the Chaletian,' Jem said. 'You really must give up this idea that you can write stories people want ot read Joey.'

'Now girls,' said Miss Wilson, the Mistress in charge of the trip. 'You may go where you will but be sure to be back her by 18 o'clock.'
With a great shout of joy, the girls split up into groups and ran off, their screams and shouts alarming locals and causing shopkeepers to shut their doors in haste.

'That's the last time I come to a carol service at the School,' muttered Herr Braun to his neighbour. 'I have never heard such awful singing in all my life ...'

'How on earth can you have had a baby Madge?! I only saw you 3 weeks ago, and I had no idea you were pregnant!'

'Mademoiselle takes the Catholics for prayers, and my sister takes the Protestants - which are you?' Joey asked the new girl. 'Oh I am Jewish - not all Austrians are Christians you know!' she replied.

The hockey match between the Chalet School and the visitors was the talk of the district for months. By the time the visiting school - passing through on a tour of Switzerland - had left, Mary-Lou was a gibbering wreck and all of Miss Wilson's acid had been put to nefarious use. Eventually, however, various calls to the police were put in, Matey was found hiding in a cupboard armed with her last bottle of castor oil and Dr Jack had been rescued from the new, highly un-ornamental pond, which had been formed in the middle of the pitch.

"Saint Trinians indeed!" Muttered Miss Annersley as she left the shelter of the library with the remaining few unharmed staff. "And you can tell Joey that's the last time we invite tourists to play, regardless of the Christian example she thinks it will set the new girl!"

I loved this one! Biddy's accent always irritates me, as she was about 8 when the CS adopted her wasn't she? I think she would have lost her accent! And in one of the books it mentioned that she lapsed into her old Irish accent from her usual accent, but then in all of the other books the way she is written sounds really quite Irish!

"Con! What on earth are you doing?! And... Reg?!"

"Sorry Mamma - I-I think I was sleepwalking again. Reg woke me up and was just helping me back home."

"Oh my poor girl! And you've clearly been walking into some bushes or undergrowth - why your hair is terribly messy and your pajamas are missing a button... Con? Why are you blushing dear?"

"The Chalet School? Oh we removed Janie from there within days. Such terrible regard for the girls' welfare - mountain accidents, near-drownings - even cold baths in the morning! And the doctors! Why they dosed Janie without even referring to her medical history. As soon as her letter arrived we removed her. John is writing to The Times this very week!"

"And that's where Emerence Hope fell over the cliff," said Jo Scott to the latest new girl on their first ramble to the Auberge. "I thought of trying to save her, but I didn't want to put myself out of the School Sports. Won every event I entered for, too."

Miss Ferrars bit her lip, not sure what to say. 'Sharlie, there's one girl I find really... odd - Mary-Lou - she appears to be so familiar with me, as though I were one of the girls myself!'
Miss Andrews sighed. 'I know, whatever we try with Mary-Lou, we cannot get her to remember the niceties of politeness.' She lowered her voice, 'To be honest Kathie, she drives most of us crazy!'

Kathie was a little upset that Mary-Lou's rudeness was so easily excused by the Chalet School mistresses. All became clear however when she received a hidden note in some of her marking. Addressed in Hilda Annersley's distinctive writing, it ran thus: Dear Kathy, We are truly sorry we weren't able to help you earlier... Mary-Lou and Joey Maynard (her predecessor) have spies everywhere. We've been trying to get rid of them for years, to no effect. If you are strong of heart, come to a meeting beyond the pines after lights out.

Miss Annersley leant impressively on the lectern. 'Also, by popular demand, we've decided to rename the School Houses Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin.'

'Why would I want to bath your babies, Mrs Maynard?' said the new girl blankly. 'Did you think I'd never seen one up close before or something?'
'By the way,' said the other new girl, 'That one seems to need its nappy changing.'

'Did you hear the new doctor, Jack?' Joey was ecstatic after the San's fundraising cocktail party. 'He said I look far too young to have so many children.'
'Yeah, right,' Jack sighed. The new doctor, he reflected, didn't have to watch in horror while Joey went through her nightly bedtime routine:
1) remove her wig (and have a good scratch);
2) take out her false teeth and flash a gummy grin at him;
3) unscrew her wooden leg;
4) fiddle disgustingly with her glass eye till it came out with a squelch;
5) remove the chicken fillets from her bra (at which point Jack always had to avert his eyes);
6) squeeze herself protestingly out of her Trinny & Susannah Magic Knickers.
