Patrick O'Reilly loved his job. Sure, he was stuck in an office for most of the day, hunting through journals and newspapers for bits of information that would intrigue and inform their readers; but it was a good feeling, knowing that he was making a contribution to the celebration of human achievement.

"Hello, Mr O'Reilly," said a familiar voice. He glanced up from the article he was reading and beamed.

"That time again already, is it?" He stood up politely to greet the lady at the door, offering her a cup of tea, but she waved him off.

"Can't stay this time, I'm afraid, the first quads are graduating tomorrow morning and we're taking them out for lunch to celebrate. I just thought I'd check and see where things are at for next year's edition." She glanced at the stack of Guinness World Record Books leaning against Patrick O'Reilly's desk. "We had septuplets this time," she added hopefully.

Patrick O'Reilly shook his head, sorry to disappoint her yet again. "I'm afraid an identical twin in Cuba has had octuplets," he told her.

"Oh well," the lady said with a sigh. "Perhaps I'll have better luck next time."

"So I'll see you in another nine months, then?" Patrick asked her. She nodded, shook his hand, and bid him farewell, for now.

Patrick O'Reilly sat back down in his chair. If she kept this up she'd have the record for the World's Largest Family, even if she never made it into print for the Most Children In One Birth.

Such a nice woman, that Mrs Maynard. He really did love his job.

How typical of Joey! But I feel sorry for poor Len, clearly she'll be expected to keep trying.

Thankyou!

Thanks Nightwing. I suppose she still manages to find bedrooms for everyone and they still all manage to get into one car.

Reminds me of the "Great Stork Derby" that occurred in Canada in the 1920s/30s.

Charles Vance Millar was a rich and childless when he died. He was also known as a practical joker. The majority of his estate was left to the Toronto woman who had the most babies in 10 years after his death.

Many, many women vied to the money. Two women had 10 children but one had two stillborn children for whom death records couldn't be obtained and one had several illegitimate children. In the end, 4 women with 9 children each split the money. The courts awarded some money to the other two women as well (it was about a tenth of what the other four got).

It reminds me of the largest family in the guiness book of records. I think it was 69 children, and all lived except for 2 to adulthood. There were a lot of quins, quads, triplets and twins and were born to a peasant family in Russia back in the 1800's
