#1: Excitements of the Chalet School Author: RachelLocation: Plotting in my lair PostPosted: Tue May 25, 2004 11:36 am

So it's a day late. So I can't find my copy. So here we go. Fave scene? Least fave scene? How do you feel about the treatment of Eitel? Was his punishment justified? The goat scene. Does it add anything to how we view Yseult? The return of Miss Bubb. How does this benefit the plot? Spot Supper is introduced in this book - opinion? This is Kathie Ferrars second term teaching - does she still come across as a new mistress or has she settled into the establishment by this time? And of course, anything else you care to discuss Smile

The return of Miss Bubb: I liked hearing more about her, though it was a bit of a coincidence she ended up in the same place as the school. Spot supper: I've never liked this, I didn't see how it would be fun. Kathie Ferrars: Yes, I think she is settling into the school well. She still seems new, but she is a real CS mistress. The rest, I can't really remember but I did like this book. Oh, the voting for the ways of celebrating the Coming of Age - I liked that. Although, did it really need so many of them to work out the church idea.

the spot supper just wasn't that good or that interesting. Kathie is still well drawn - one of my favourite characters in the books. Miss Bubb - bringing her back was a clever move. Yseult - *giggles* - yes, it did help. It drew the contrast between the girl she could have been and the girl she was, and showed that there's more to people than they want you to see.

The spot supper would, I felt, have only worked as a fun thing if you were at a day school as the CS girls all had their supper together everyday

Comments are based on the paperback version, which I'm currently reading! Fave scene? The whole bit about when they go out ski-ing. Virginia Adams "stotting" off her sledge, Miss Ferrars on Emerence's sledge when Emerence hadn't wanted to go sledging after Mary-Lou's accident & when Vi, Verity, Mary-Lou & Barbara get into trouble from Miss Wilson for being too many & Mary-Lou says "one's Verity and she only takes up a small space". Also like the bit when the staff are choosing the Coming of Age suggestions. Least fave scene? Don't actually like when Miss Wilson meets Miss Bubb in Hilda's study. She's just called her all the names under the sun and then she's reeling off all this past history to her! (I have paperback version & am a bit confused about the whole Miss Bubb thing as it seems that they introduced the idea of Miss Bubb twice - once when she's seen by Sybil and Miss Wilson, who then passes the info onto Joey & the staff room in general and they proceed to have a b*tch about her, and then when she comes to visit Hilda? Am I missing something?) The goat scene. Does it add anything to how we view Yseult? Yes, though only briefly. I thought that would be the "great reformation", but it never seems to be followed up. The return of Miss Bubb. How does this benefit the plot? Didn't think it did really as we don't hear about her again apart from when she's dying in Reunion. Spot Supper - opinion? Doesn't sound all that exciting and seems a bit nasty to make new people stand up in front of the whole school. And they make the youngest go last!

Yes nasty! The goat scene was good. Dunno why though Miss Bubb erm, She just seems like a little by-plot to make the book biggger. as Jay said does I contribute to the plot, NNOO! I would have a bigger opinion but i haven't read it for awhile.

Haven't read this for a while, but here's my tuppence hap'orth: I like the way Kathie gets Emerence to sledge again. Don't really understand why Miss Bubb came back, unless people had been asking EBD what happened to her (would anyone really care?) And then we never really see her teaching. Spot Supper - anyone else read Janeways? Anyone else notice how the chapter in that about their Spot Supper seemed remarkably familiar? EBD basically lifted it from that for Excitements and changed a few names - if it had been another author it would have been plagarism. Rolling Eyes Kathie Ferrars still seems to be settling down, not entirely new but not entirely settled either.

I like this one. I think Kathie still seems rather new but is settling down OK. I like the Spot Supper - I thought it was a good laugh. Also the Goat Scene. Least favourite would be Miss Bubb coming back - I hate her! I love the way Kathie gets Emerence back on the sledge.

Fave scene? Charmian turning all the lights out. Least fave scene? Probably all the stuff about Len's Great Idea for the chapels. I can think of better ways to celebrate, personally. How do you feel about the treatment of Eitel? Was his punishment justified? The thing that struck me about Eitel was that the CS always seems to employ 'simple' lads as odd-job men. Wasn't there one in Tyrol too? I think Eitel's punishment was OTT. The goat scene. Does it add anything to how we view Yseult? Not in my view. I do feel sorry for Yseult (without liking her) being so much older than the Maynards, yet being expected to see Len as always right and oh so wise. And I think the way her mother was dismissed as a writer by Inter V was a bit rough - hey, Josephine M Bettany was hardly Dickens, was she? The return of Miss Bubb. How does this benefit the plot? It seemed a bit of a space-filler to me. As if! Spot Supper is introduced in this book - opinion? Stupid idea - they had supper together every night. Equally stupid idea - being fined for spills. And why, why, why does Joey have to go? This is Kathie Ferrars second term teaching - does she still come across as a new mistress or has she settled into the establishment by this time? I think she's settling down, though too in awe of Miss Annersley for my liking.
