Did any of the girls, other than the Juniors, ever bring cuddly toys to school?

Katharine Gordon did - but only accidentally and it wasn't really hers! Smile Apart from that, I don't think so...

Did the Juniors? I don't remember any mentions of it, but we never really hear much about them (apart from Robin, who doesn't seem to bring any toys.)

They do have space/ a shelf/ a bureau-thing? for their private belongings, which mostly seem to include framed pictures from home and 'ornaments' but I can't recall anything about dolls or teddies Confused

I suspect turning up with a teddy would be seen as extremely soppy and sentimental... Isn't that sort of the point made by Kat Gordon having one that isn't really hers (Sorry, I know that is appalingly expressed, but I am VERY sleepy!)? I do know that any toys that made it onto our venture Scout trips were quickly kidnapped and enjoyed all kinds of adventures by themselves...

A (very politically incorrect!) golliwog was the "class mascot" for Mary-Lou and co at one point, but I think they were still juniors then, and he didn't belong to any one individual Very Happy .

Simone had paper dolls at in the early days and played with Robin with them. And didn't Robin get a doll for Christmas in Jo of? We don't really see much of the smaller Juniors at any stage, so it's hard to know.

Possibly because I have just been reading the gutter thread, soft toys were not what I initially thought of when I read the title! Embarassed

And now you've just made me think of Thekla and her frilly undies!!

Actually, (quite OT) I just read a passage at the end of Anne of Ingleside where she 'slipped on a negligee and went to check on the children' - did the meaning of negligee change over time or does it mean something that I think it doesn't? /confused.

I think it meant a light dressing gown type thing, which she would pull on over her nightie.

That doll probably would have been a porcelin doll, so wouldn't be carted about as Barbie is today (thinking of the end of Toy Story 2 "you'll love Amy, she's an artist!").

The school life is very structured, I can't recall any occasions of 'free time' where the pupils would be able to play their own private games and leave the room in a glorious mess. Their free time seems to be spent outdoors, reading, hobbies club and making stuff for the sale (and I always run hobbies club and sale work together).

Oh, I'm so glad I wasn't the only one!

I was going to say I was sure there was a bit where Robin is seen with a doll (at school, not at Christmas), but I think I'm dredging up an old mental picture which has since been corrected. I think it's in Head Girl, when Grizel is hurt in the snowfight, and... no it isn't. It's one of the times when Jo is ill/hurt. Anyway, it says something about Robin clutching her Rosary for comfort. I had no idea what a Rosary was, so I assumed it was a doll. Funny how you can make things fit what you know!

Well, there are the paper dolls that Simone collects at first, and then gives to the juniors. And Jo got injured because of those as well - or Robin did. I forget the exact sequence, other than they all 'went for a swim' in the fast flowing river, and needed Rufus to rescue them...

Robin chased after the doll which was blown away, completely forgot to look where she was going. Joey saw her fall and legged it after her. The Robin got caught against a bush, and Joey jumped in to hold her before the current took hold again. However, she couldn't lift her, and then Rufus jumped in to steady Joey and Miss Durrant took the Robin off her.
