What are your favourite PB covers?
What 4 would you put together as a set?
Do you prefer the artwork of style 1,2 or 3/4

I am making some CS themed stuff as presents and am intrigued to know as well as getting some more ideas that arnt my preference!

For me Style 3/4 are the ones I love, I grew up collecting and now have the whole series in this design.
Peggy & war are 2 of my favs

I only like the pb covers in an ironic way, such as the Exile 70s one because Jo looks like a Charlie's Angel on the back of it Laughing

I definitely prefer the 3rd style Armada pointillist ones. The earlier ones are mostly just good for comedy value, An exception to this is the picture of Daisy and Robin from Exile that Liss uses for the boad - I think it's lovely. As to which 3rd stlye ones I like, I general the Tyrol ones but I think that's because I read them as a child so it's a nostagia thing. Some of the later ones are awful. Jo to the Rescue I can't stand. Know its a 4th style, but the effect is the same. Future is pretty bad too.

Style 3 (I think) in general, as they're the ones I started collecting. As for my favourite, it's Exile, though I don't know quite why. I refused to get rid of that one when I got it a duplicate in a 2-in-1 with United.

I really like the 4th style pb covers, my favourites are Summer Term, and Gay
I think this is because I grew up collecting these though!

3rd/4th style as well, probably because those were the ones I grew up with. I especially like Adrienne, Althea, Jo of and Rivals, though I think I like Althea because I like the picture rather than thinking it's a great representation of the book. Some of the older paperbacks do make me chuckle though - Problem in particular!

My favourite is the 3rd paperback style of The Chalet Schol at War - the pointalism one where there is a dark haired girl in the front, looking dreamily off in the distance while the other girls work in the garden.

In general I like the third/fourth pointalism styles best, as the older ones are a little to retro, and the newer ones a little to stylized.

I'll put in a plug for the covers page

http://cscharacterguide.googlepages.com/covers.html

and a request - if you have any paperback covers not on here, could you scan them (front and back cover) and send them to me? I'm aiming to get a full high resolution set of cover art for all editions (hc, paperback, omnibus editions) posted.

Peggy and Exile third pb style are my favourites I think. I'm not too fond of the 'action' type covers, ie Gay and Lavender, they're a bit too busy I think. /ramble

In general, the 3rd pb style are my favourites. I'm very fond of a number of the second style for their kitchy-ness and complete failure to acknowledge the era the books were written in. Jo and her wildly inappropriate mini skirt on Jo Returns springs to mind.

I think I would have to agree.
I'm also very fond of the 1st style Camp.

Oh I love this cover! Because she looks like Mary Tyler Moore on it Laughing

(sorry to spree, my connection is so slow it won't let me edit the previous post Sad )

What about a hilarious set of four where Joey masquerades as various characters from 1970s TV?

Exile - she is a Charlie's Angel
Returns - she is Mary Tyler Moore
Genius - (I think it's Mary-Lou this time?) could be Wonder Woman in her special 'ski' outfit (for when she was saving people on mountains, naturally) (you'd have to blank out the other skiiers)
Problem - (not sure who it is on the cover looking demure - Rosamund?) is just asking to be compared to something but I can't think what right now

Jennifer, I'd not seen your covers page before - it's a wonderful collection!

Put me down for the pointillist ones, as well - although that's probably influenced by what's on my shelf at home.

I like the pointillist ones, too. I had mainly second style pbs when I was growing up, but I recently sold them all and replaced with third style ones which are much nicer in my opinion. Can't quite decide on my favourite cover, though, but I like Peggy, War and Gay.

I like the second style. Most of mine are either second or third, apart from 'Oberland' which is a GGB book.

Another vote here for the 3rd/4th style covers.

I also like the 3rd and 4th styles since those are the ones I first collected. Some of the earlier ones are funny with the girls in miniskirts!

That's a favourite of mine too.

Thanks Jennifer for the link. I realise now that it's the fourth edition I like best - didn't quite realise they were different from the third as I was looking at the art, but they're brighter and more cheerful. I also have a lot of the 2-in-one omnibuses and a couple of first style which I'm not so fond of, and a load of second style which I do like. I particularly like the second-style Wrong for some reason, which I read my aunt's copy of. When I ordered my own copy second hand from Amazon I was quite disappointed with the third-style pointilism cover. Not that it really matters, of course. I think in general I like the 4th-style up to about Highland Twins and then 2nd-style better from that point on. I think it seems like the artist for the 4th-style captured the earlier characters better, and the 2nd-style artist got the later characters right. Maybe that's because I read them with those covers, though.

I have the Trials/Ted 2-in-one - and I've never quite figured out why they use the Head Girl cover on it....

It took me several read throughs of Trials/Ted to realise that the front cover was completely wrong and that's why I couldn't find any incident in it that seemed to relate!

The covers that make me laugh are the ones where the uniforms are completely wrong (there are some Swiss books that have a brown uniform featured on the cover - I can't recall which). My favourites are the hardcovers - they're the ones that seem closest to the events in the books, and have a real feeling of the time about them. The majority of mine are the fourth and fifth editions, though I have a mix of all except the special editions.

It's the same with the hb 3-in-1 of Eustacia, Shocks and Wins the Trick which has a 4th style cover of the midnight feast in Lintons/Rebel (I forget which one it is)

Yes, I have that one. And how odd to put that picture and such a different selection of books in one volume - guaranteed to confuse everyone. Not to mention the problem of where to put it on the shelf!

I don't understand why they put such a random selection of books in a three in one! Must have been very confusing if you didn't know the books!

I realise I'm coming into this a bit late Embarassed , but that's a great collection of cover art! My own favourites are the 3rd and 4th style, particularly Exile(because I used to spend so much time trying to figure out who's who), and New House.(because they all look 'very fresh-faced and pink-cheeked'!
