Inspired by some of the drabbles recently, especially Joyce's... who do you think would have been Head Girl, had EBD continued writing the series? The only character who jumps to mind to me is Jack, she seems as much set up as a leader as Joey, Mary-Lou and Len did. Although I shudder to think what it would have been like had she been HG! Rolling Eyes

I would have liked to see one of the Sams as Head Girl.

I always liked Copper Ansell and would have liked her to be HG. I reckon Jack would have been, although I'm not sure she'd have liked the idea much. And it would have been nice to see Ailie Russell and co become prefects.

I'm fairly sure that Jack would have ended up as HG as EBD seemed to be planning for her to take over from Len as "heroine", although she would definitely not have been my choice! Of Ailie's age group, I think Janice Chester would have made a good HG, with Ailie as Games Prefect.

In the far distant future I'd like to see Felicity Maynard as Head Girl. She comes across well in Future, when she works with the older girls to help Melanie become accustomed to the idea of going to the Chalet School.

Of the two Sams I think Samaris was HG potential. I think Janice would have been a good head girl to. Maybe Erica Standish would have been to.
If EBD had lived forever then the real dilemma she would have faced was who would be HG between Cecil and Daphne Bettany.

Cecil, as a summer baby, would have been one of the younger girls in her year, so I think Daphne, six months older, just pips her! Of course, we never actually meet Daphne (or do we, in the hardbacks?) so we don't know what she is like; Cecil, at four or five, is a very level-headed little girl. And I don't see Felicity as Head Girl when her time comes, any more than Con or Margot would have quite "done".

As for the immediate future, in one of my drabbles I have Janice Chester as head girl the year before Jack (yes, I agree, she's the obvious choice in her year), with Ailie as her deputy. I think that's 2 years after Len leaves, though - I have no real idea who would have been her immediate successor.

Audrey Everett is the only one that I could see immediately following Len. She's the only one of the year below that had any sort of presence.

Yes, I thought Audrey was one of the most likely candidates to follow on from Len, and wrote about that term in Two Old Girls.

I like Janice too and have an idea for a story I might write one day about her year as Head Girl. I think Ailie would be Games, though - didn't she want to be a games mistress?

I could see Samaris as HG - but I'm not sure EBD had thought further ahead than Jack. If she'd kept up one book per term, it would have taken her a while to get that far.

The only problem with Janice is she's also in the same form as Jane Carew, Jose Helston and Jane Abbott all leaders and all potential Head Girls. I think that would be a hard form to pick from. I could see Ailie as games Prefect and she has always said she wants to be a Games Mistress.

Lesley Anderson is a definate shoo in for her form, but I would never pick Jack. Flavia Ansell or Wanda would be the only two who I could see doing that.

I think Samaris Davies is the definate leader in her form, or Robina who is the only other described leader of that group of girls and of Erica's form I don't know who would be picked except someone from the Crew as they are all leaders in that group

I can't see Felicity as Head Girl as she is described as shy and retiring so yes she would probably be prefect but you need someone with something more in them to lead the school

I agree that Audrey is the best candidate for the year after Len, with Melanie Lucas, Connie Winter and Henriette Zendl as senior prefects.

From the year after that - probably Lesley Anderson. We don't see much of that year.

The next year it's hard to say - we have Jane Carew, Janice Chester, Judy Willoughby, Ailie Russell and Jose Helston. I'd like to see Jose as head.

The next year would have to be Jack, but I'd much rather see Flavia Ansell as head girl. She's got a much more grounded, practical personality and is better with people. Then I'd like Samantha van der Byl as Second Prefect and Jack as hobbies prefect, maybe paired with Wanda von Escheneau.

The next year you could have Erica Standish, or Astrid Anderson, or Val Pertwee if she reforms sufficiently.

Wouldn't Flavia have left, though - I seem to remember her father saying he couldn't manage much more than one year for her. I know there was talk of her sitting for one of the many scholarships, but I don't think we're ever told if she was given it.

According to the A-Z she's mentioned right thrugh to Prefects.

If you want to keep going what about Kitten Lucy? Two of her older sisters were HG and Vi was only pipped by Mary-Lou.

And Daphne Bettany would have to be just to keep up the Bettany girls grip on the position.

Cheers,
Joyce

Weren't Jack and Jane in the same form? I love the idea of Jane being HG instead of Jack... Smile

I like to imagine someone like Felicity or Cecil being slated for HG, and - shock horror - actually turning it down. So many of the family (Jo, Peggy, Bride etc.) were against the idea initially, but accepted it. I would just love to see Jo's reaction if one of her daughters turned around and said, "no thanks, I really don't think I'm up to it! So-and-so would be much better."

I seem to recall that Jane was one form higher? Possibly Upper IVb rather than Lower IVa.

Might be wrong though, my book is not in front of me.

I admit though, it would be very funny to see Jack's reaction if that were to happen.

And besides, don't they end up being friends and etc. after the whole Jack-overhearing-the-news-of-Jane's-mother's-accident thing? I think it's at the beginning of Adrienne - Jack's spent a week of the holidays with Jane and family.

Jane was in the form higher to Jack though they did share Maths class together in Jane's first term until Jane caught up to her own form

Phil Maynard is obvious choice for me! Even though we don't learn much about her character because she is too young it would be very EBD to make the youngest Maynard head girl too!

Ah, but she might not be the youngest Maynard girl by then - her quadruplet sisters would follow her up the school Laughing

I think Jack Lambert would be more suited to a role like games prefect - or hobbies prefect shared with someone else (like Tom did, I think?) than head girl.
