Has anyone spotted this one? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Chapter Two - the prefects are discussing sports with Doris Hill, who has just come from Glendower house:
Quote:
"What about tennis?" This came from Elinor Pennell, the Head Girl.
"Primrose is pretty good. The Dawbarns aren't keen and haven't bothered much."
"Oh, bother them!" Blossom exclaimed. "The fact of the matter is, Doris, that we don't get much in the way of cricket apart from our inter-House matches, and we have worked up quite a decent lot of tennis challenges. I was hoping some of that crowd would play fairly decently by this time. You've kept up your own tennis, I hope? You used to be pretty good for your age, I seem to remember."
Doris blushed. "As a matter of fact, I was Games Prefect at Glendower House and in the Six. Gwen Jones was a reserve; but I can't raise your hopes about the other three. Primrose is all right so long as she doesn't lose her head, but she's unreliable-or was last season."

Later on:
Quote:
Doris shook her head. "She certainly wasn't last season. She may have steadied down this, but I couldn't say. And it's no use looking at me like that, Blossom, for I'm only average at tennis. Cricket's always been my game."

Is the girl good at tennis or not???? *getting exasperated with EBD, beacuse it is too late at night to figure this one out*

Maybe there wasn't much depth of talent at Glendower House among tennis players, so Doris was in the Six without being better than average? *clutching at straws*

My impression is that it was a very small school so they could have played for the school, yet not been that good

Yes that could be, but in the first conversation, it seems to me that she gives the impression that she is fairly good at tennis... blushing when Blossom says she used to be good, for example. Wouldn't it be logical to say then that she was only average?

Maybe she means she's only average compared to her cricket?

I agree with you Kate, in the first bit she seems to be saying she is good. If she wasn't good why not say then rather than in a later sentence???

I've wondered that too every time I've read this book!

Maybe Doris has an evil twin who wants to keep her out of the tennis team (ooo, getting US soap-style drabble idea... Twisted Evil )
