In Three Go, when Gillian and Dollie are talking about moving Mary-Lou et al up, they refer to 'Bracey' who seems to be form mistress of Lower Third B.

Who is Bracey???

Something about Bracey would have our blood.

I just assumed it was a nickname for the form mistress that they were thinking of moving the girls to and we just never hear about her.

Though come to think of it - it's strange for mistresses to nickname each other. I still remember the jolt I got when Miss Everett refers to Mary or Peggy as "Burnett".

Cheers,
Joyce

I've just looked in the list of mistresses in the biographies list, and there's no-one called Bracewell or anything like that which would obviously be shortened to Bracey, so I've no idea who they mean Confused .

From the context "Bracey" can only be the form mistress of the form above Mary-Lou's....

It's a strange one, though. I don't remember EBD making any other such random / informal references to CS staff we don't know / have never met.

EBD probably had a minor mistress character in mind, and didn't realise that they hadn't actually appeared in the books, maybe. Or they did appear but their scenes were cut for whatever reason before the books were published. I imagine that sort of passing reference would be hard to keep track of.

Could it possibly in any imaginable way, have been a typo for Stacey? T is next to R on the keyboard ... Confused

But why on earth would stacy benson care what happens to Mary-Lou and her gang?

I tend to think it was a very minor mistress who was mentioned in passing. But it is strange that they nickname her given Chalet school's dislike of nicknames for anyone.

Cheers,
Joyce

Am wondering if it goes into more detail in the HB version. There were a couple of mistresses mentioned in Exile in the HB version that didn't get mentioned at all in the cut PB version. Maybe when GGBP releases the book (I think thats happening around now) you might actually be able to find out

But they do nickname staff privately - 'Bill' would be one they were used to using, and later 'Ferry' and 'Willy'.

Just checked (p159) and it just says

"Bracey would have our blood!"

so presumambly this is referring to someone that EBD thougth she had introduced to us, but hadn't and that she then forgets about again Rolling Eyes

As an aside, I think their nicknames get less creative with time. In the Tyrol they have Charlie (Miss Stewart, aka Bonnie Prince Charlie), Bonnie (aka Bonnie Leslie), Bill, The Abbess, Vater Bar, Plato, Sally Go Round the Moon, Teddy.

After they leave Tyrol, all they seem to do is add an ie or y to the name - Ferry, Willy, Deney, Burney (used for three different mistresses), Linny, Cocky, Berty, Andy, Yollie - the only creative one is Rocky for Miss Stone.

I think Joey was responsible for most of the above names (except Margia thought of Plato) so once she left school the nicknames got less interesting. It wouldn't be very suitable for Joey to keep nicknaming staff after she's left and is even sometimes a teacher herself.
