Can any of the German speakers on the board enlighten me as to what this means, and why it is appaerntly so rude?

I know that Vater means father, but my one yearof German studies didn't take me much beyond that.

"Father Bear" I think EBD translated it as somewhere.

Edited to add: I think it would have been rude to have such a nickname for an older person who you should be showing respect to, especially as it was given because he was reknowned for being short tempered. Jo, with her usual way of charming everyone, seems to have got away with it though.

Originally it was Vater Bär, just as the word Chalet had the accent (Chālet) and Mademoiselle La Pāttre and pātisserie did, too. However, in later versions they dropped all foreign-looking accents except in some German and French names.

Thank you. I actually knew about the accent, but I had no idea how to tell the computer about it, so I just left it out. People seem to have understood anyway.

Father bear - I can't help thinking of Goldilocks; "Whooo has been using my music room?" kind of thing. maybe I'll try my hand at drabble writing...

Go for it, Miriram!!

A bear can be cuddly like a big teddy bear or scary like a wild bear.

Similarly, Joey calls Herr Mensch 'Onkel Riese' which I think means Uncle Giant and again got away with it. Rolling Eyes

Ally, surely you're not surprised at Joey getting away with something no one, except perhaps OOAOML, would!
