What are they exactly? In my imagination I see them as 3D but I am sure this is not right! But they must be something good because they are made such a fuss of! Wink

I believe they are clear plastic sheets that can show a spread of information, such as popular, languages, race, or, for instance, the types of crops that are grown over an area. By placing one map over another on the page of an atlas or similar, it is possible to see if there is a correlation (to quote Mary Lou "see how they are related") between these different factors.

That makes sense! Thanks KB.

It sounds like they could be quite fun to use!

They always sounded wonderful to me too, though I have never come across them. Has anyone? Did EBD make them up as a useful device for Geography lessons. Incidentally I always find her Geography lessons sound more authentic than her English lessons.

I keep meaning to ask my Dad about these. He was a Geigraphy teacher and I always assumed that he would know what they were or may have used them at school himself.

I always thought they were the maps that were made by inking a roller with the map on it in relief, the teacher would prepare them and hand them out in lessons to be stuck in our books.

I like KB's explanation. I love maps and would have found that really interesting in a geography class, but I wonder how lilkely it would have been for them to have clear plastic maps? Jennie's version sounds more likely, if a little duller. (Sorry Jennie - I mean the maps are duller rather than your explanation of course)

I don't think they are simply rollered maps (I remember those!) EBD calls them synthetic by which I think she means clear plastic.

Don't you think that if they are plastic maps, they would be nice for use in say one lesson, but then completely redundant for the rest of the academic year? Confused

Students seem to be issued with a whole set of them per continent, and have to identify which ones are relevant to the lesson, so I doubt they're the mimeo or ditto variety. Kathie Ferrars even has a special file for hers, with alphabetical pockets. They're supposed to be especially good for reasoning from cause to effect, e.g. comparing topography with crops, climate, etc. I can see them being used quite a bit in the course of a term.

I think that for me anyway the novelty would wear off quite quickly. They sound a bit 'junior side' IMO.

If this is what EBD meant by synthetic maps they are generally referred to as overlays which can easily be wiped clean if you use a non permanent ink
