Ridiculous punishments

I'm becoming more an more flabberghasted at Three Go. Lesley and the twins (not too so who these twins are since I can't remember them being introduced) shake in their shoes at Miss Burnett's expression over Verity-Ann refusing to sing in German. Their punishment for this is to be kept behind, have a nasty lecture, write appologies to Mr Denny, spend the evening hemming dusters and lose two conduct marks.

I know EBD is ridiculous with her punishments sometimes but this seems to be being punished for nothing. Can anyone else explain it?

I thought that was pretty irrational too. They're being punished for "spluttering" after a comment of Verity's, which seems to me like a pretty natural reaction. Maybe it was just that seeing as the mistress couldn't find a way to punish Verity she took her anger out on the three? It happens.

I can't think of any examples off-hand, but occasionally it does seem that everyone in the vicinity when a crime has been committed is punished, whether they actually had anything to do with it at all, or were even trying to stop it and just failed!

This carries on through the book - one of the worst injustices IMHO was that given to Jane Carew after she and Jack Lambert were fighting.Maeve Bettany and the triplets had established that she had done nothing wrong, she had just followed Miss Ferrars' orders, and Jack had physically attacked her, then accused her of lying. Yet she still got a lecture about fighting- what was she supposed to do? Stand there passively and allow Jack to hurt her? swear

That really annoys me. Evil or Very Mad

That sort of thing seems to happen a lot. It does often seem that the wronged party is somehow indirectly blamed for the incident, and so gets some sort of lecture. Doesn't Bride get told off for something she says about Diana Skelton leaving, and then of course there's Mary-Lou lecturing all the triplets in Theodora, when only Margot has done wrong.

Or Blossom being lectured because when a junior came and told her that the Art teacher wanted to see her in the art room she *believed* it, rather than assuming she was being lied to.

Personally, I thought it was showing disrespect to a master.

And of the cases that are told off, some have good reason. Blossom was always thoughtless, so this is a good reminder for her (at least partly because she didn't tell anyone where she was going, and weren't girls not supposed to be in the grounds on their own anyway?).

I think one of the more ridiculous punishments is given to Thekla in Lintons/Rebel when Joyce and co act like savages in Miss Normans class (which I'm sorry, is just bullying).
Why does Thekla get into trouble for staying away from the class and refraining from joining in? Shocked
I think EBD really disliked her........ Wink

Because she was being disobedient by not going to the lesson - playing truant in other words and she had partaken in some of the other things that happened.

As well as it being bad manners, just not turning up.
