I'm reading Problem at the moment, and the Sixth organise paper games (mostly) for their evening. "Consequences" and the one where you list things beginning with a given letter I know about, but I'm intrigued by the others. They play "the Kate game" and "book wedding" - what are those? What is "Corinthian Bagatelle"?

The Kate game is words ending with "cate" - e.g educate or prevaricate.

I don't know about the others, though.

For some reason I always thought the Kate game would involve sewing. Not sure why...

When I was at school the point of this game was to be a rude as possible! I was quite surprised when reading the CS to find out that you could actually play an *innocent* version halo

I vaguely remember Len describing "book wedding" to someone once ... IIRC it was a kind of alternative version of consequences, using book titles and characters from books. I may have got that wrong though!

Corinthian Bagatelle is a kind of board game - I think it involves getting marble-type things in holes. I don't know how they made a paper version of it though Confused .

I always read it as the Katy Game, and thought it was the one that Katy and Clover teach their friends in What Katy Did At School. How wrong I was, as usual... Smile

What game did Katy and Clover teach their friends? I can't think of any from my book, except the bumping-into-all-the-desks rivers one, but that's in What Katy Did.

I get very confuddled between this and Kim's game - I just thought it was another name for the same thing!

Isn't Kim's game a memory game? I am fairly sure they played a variation of that at some of the evenings. For a long time I thought the Kate game was a board game of some kind, possibly involving a doll?!

Kim's game (at least as we played it) is when you have a tray full of little things (e.g. thimble, playing card, elastic etc.). You have a minute or so to look at the tray and then have to write down everything you can remember being on the tray.

There is a variation on this, and I'm not sure if it is also called Kim's game, where you have the tray of objects, then everyone covers their eyes while one thing is removed (and the other things are moved around, depending on how hard you want to make it) and you see who is fastest to name the missing thing.

When they have the first meeting of the Saintly Stuck-Up Society, they play various games I think. The one I remember is where everyone writes a question, then folds the paper and passes it round, everyone writes a word, folds and passes, then you open your paper and have to write a poem using the word and answering the question.

The first time I read that book all I could think was that that game sounds so insanely HARD.

I can't believe that the girls manage to write page-long poems in 10 minutes - I would be writing stuff like "where's the cat?/ he's on the hat."

I like the game they play in Problem though. The girls are given a letter of the alphabet and then asked to write a book title, boy's name, girl's name, river, city etc starting with that letter. It sounded like fun.

Cheers,
Joyce

That's known as Boy Girl to me and my friends. We spent many a GCSE science lesson playing it Laughing

Our present year 11s went through a phase of it last year, so for about two weeks every lesson had a 'boy girl' plenary, the only condition being they had to have a religion category!

SOme of the paper games sounded so hard to me - that was one I felt relieved to know they played, because I knew how to play it.
