Post subject:  Maynard children and their musical instruments

Can someone let me know what musical instruments were played by the Maynard children, particularly the triplets? Am I right in remembering that Len played the violin and Con the 'cello? I'd be very grateful for any assistance.

I think Len played the violin. Can't remember at all what the others played, though.

Con definitely played the cello.

I think Margot might have played a string instrument, too. I seem to remember a comment from Jo to the effect that Felicity would have to take up the piano, or there would be nobody to play accompaniments. Sorry - I can't remember which book it's from - one of the Swiss ones at the beginning of a term, I think.

Margot played the viola. I think it's in Richenda when they go home for half-term, but can't think of any incidents about their playing.

I think at one point Len and Rosamund Lilley were having a conversation and Len was described as having a fiddle- I guess that means Violin

It is in Richenda, as Mel and Lottie said, if you want the source:
Quote:
Con picked up her cello case and went with Margot who was burdened with her viola. Len had a fiddle. As Joey Maynard had once said, “My family seem to have taken a hate at the piano. Felicity will have to take it on, though, or there’ll be no one to play accompaniments!” which, as Dr. Jack observed, was looking rather far ahead!
Len took up her violin case...

Can't think of anyplace where we are told about the other young Maynards.

The first sentence of that quote always amuses me. I'm sure that Con has much more of a burden with a cello, than Margot does with a viola! Maybe that's why I remembered the occasion.

Thanks for finding the actual reference, Mel and Maeve.

Didn't Phil want to play the flute in Two Sam's so she could be like Samaris.

Yes, and I think Geoff did too.

Cecil was said at one point to already have a sweet singing voice, or something along those lines. I don't recall any reference to her learning an instrument. And all the triplets could sing, but Con and Margot especially had good voices and IIRC were having lessons.

That's all excellent - many thanks.

Margot's voice in particular was supposed to have been superb. The implication is that she could have sung professionally.

When is that implied? I bet it is in the HBs so I will have missed out on it!
