Are we actually told what illness Leila is being treated for and what happens to her afterwards? Does she return home?

Doesn't she have a tubercular hip? She always seemed to appear out of and disappear into nowhere to me.

Doesn't she have a tubercular hip? Or am I confusing her with someone else?

She has a tubercular hip.

She shows up in Barbara and is operated on and nearly dies in Kenya. I think Mrs Elstob then snatches Sue Meadows (who was brought to Switzerland only to be company for Leila anyway) out of school and takes Leila--unknown whether or not Sue goes as well--on a voyage round the world, just like Alix Rutherford goes on.

It strikes me yet again what a very nice child Sue must have been...poor girl, knowing that you were doing everything only for the convenience of your cousin, and being so nice anyway.

Yes, Leila had a tubercular hip. Apparently, she was also very selfish as her mother gave in to her every whim, and insisted that Sue did as well.

Is "Elstob" an rl surname? I've never come across it; it always feels like an anagram to me. (Of what, I'm not sure! Badly spelt "bolster", perhaps!)

The first thing that struck me when I saw the name again was how Arabic it sounds! Leila is an Arabic first name and the El at the beginning of the surname is rather Egyptian! Not sure what 'Stob' could mean, though.

I've a vague idea - not sure why! - that it's a name that's mainly found in the North East which was EBD's neck of the woods - is it the name of a place there?

Sometimes I'll mention a surname which is really common in Lancashire and people from other parts of the country'll say that they've never heard it before.

That was a fascinating link, thank you, Joyful. I had to put my maiden name in, just to see!

Yes, there's a wonderful part in Mary Lou (hardback) where Mrs Elstob demands that Jack come in and tell Leila himself about OOAO finally waking up after being thrown into a tree by Emerence, and Jack tells Mrs E that it's about time Leila learned to deny herself a little. That bit always makes me cheer. Laughing

I think while Leila was dangerously ill they didn't dare deny her anything, in case it made her worse - like when she wanted Con to comeand visit her. Once she was getting better and semmed likely to recover fully, they were concerned aout her developing as a person as well.

I don't have the hardback, and that isn't in the paperback, but why was Leila told aout Mary-Lou's accident in the first place? They can'y have een more than aquaintances, and it seems unlike the normal protective attitude to give her that to worry about.

In the hb, at the start of the afternoon,
Con was skimming about in front of Leila Elstob's window, pausing at the end of each turn to wave her hand or blow a kiss to the little invalid. Jo Scott and Josette Russell, a pair of inseprables, were with her.

After Mary-Lou recovers, Jack goes to visit the school and passes the Elstob's chalet

As he neared the Elstobs' house, Mrs. Elstob, who had evidently been on the look-out for him, came down the path and waved to him to stop.
"What is the news?" she asked anxiously. "Leila is fretting to know. Mary-Lou has been very kind ot her, sending her post-cards and story books. Can you come in and tell her yourself, Doctor?"
He shook his head. "I'll be along later, but now I must get on to the school. It's their right to have the full news first. But you may tell Leila that we all hope and believe that Mary-Lou will be all right befofe so very long."

I've been reading this in detail, as I've done it for the Encyclopedia, so for once I haven't been able to do my usual skim read Very Happy

My understanding is that the accident, if not actually visible from LEila's window was near enough that they couldn't help knowing that something serious had happened - at least from the noise and general upset. And it reads like Mary-Lou has sent Leila things - probably not just in term time either, but on a regular basis during holidays as well.
