Con walked back to Freudesheim and slipped in so quietly, even Bruno didn’t hear her. She crept silently up the stairs to her bedroom and closed the door quietly behind her.

She sat down on her bed and spread the pages of her manuscript in front of her. The scene in the San had upset her a great deal and the last hope, that Rix would be able to help, was probably now completely gone. She hadn’t realised how much he and Laurie hated each other or how much Laurie wanted to be appointed as the Head of the San.

And then Laurie didn’t know the worst of it…

Making her mind up, she ripped the manuscript into tiny pieces and threw them into the wastepaper basket.

Con went downstairs, making some deliberate noise so that Mary-Lou would know she was in the house. She was not anxious to seek out the company of the elder girl, Mary-Lou knew something was wrong and kept on asking questions that Con didn’t want to answer. Len was the same, otherwise she could have taken refuge at the pretty chalet on the Rosleinalpe more often. It was getting tiring.

“Is that you, Con?” Mary-Lou called from the Saal. “Would you like some Kaffee with me?”

Con hesitated. She didn’t want to face Mary-Lou, but an idea had occurred to her, so she went in.

Mary-Lou was clearing up her archaeology notes from the sofa. Her pregnancy was getting more obvious by the day, but she looked very well. Her skin was glowing with health.

They drank their Kaffee companionably enough, Mary-Lou made most of the conversation.

“Do you still have your flat in London?” Con asked, rather abruptly.

“My flat? Oh no, not any more. We sold it – we kept Rix’s flat because it was nearer to his hospital. Why do you ask?”

“I just wondered – if I went to London could I stay there?”

“Of course! But why do you want to go to London? For a holiday you mean?”

“Maybe. If my novel gets accepted, I might need to go,” Con lied.

“Oh, of course! Well, of course you can stay there. Maeve’s in London, now, you know, she wrote to me last week. Let me see if I can find her letter.”

Con bit her lip, “That would be great.”

Bruno leapt up at that point and dashed into the hall and returned a few seconds later with Rix and the twins, who dived on the tea trolley with whoops of glee.

Rix kissed Mary-Lou and greeted Con, accepting a cup of tea.

“I might have to go back this evening,” he said, yawning. “I need to look at the books again. This Meroxet thing is getting beyond a joke, but at least I can use it to terminate Rosomon's contract."

Con dropped her cup and it smashed on the floor.

“No harm done,” Mary-Lou said, automatically, picking up the pieces of china, carefully. Con shrank back, feeling sick.

“What do you mean? Is Laurie going to lose his job?” she asked, trying hard not to sound so frightened. Rix was mopping spilt tea off his trousers, looking annoyed.

“What? Pipe down, Con. We can’t talk about it here.” Rix looked up and indicated the twins, who hadn’t heard what she had said, but were looking over with identical expressions of alarm.

“You haven’t got any proof!” she cried, forgetting all caution in her dismay. The twins looked over at her in amazement and Mary-Lou got to her feet to go to them and take them out of the room, quickly.

Rix took hold of Con’s arm before she could flee. “You know something about it, don’t you? For God’s sake, Con, why the hell didn’t you tell me? Is this why you wanted to work for me – so you could cover it up? Christ!”

“Don’t speak to me like that!” she flashed back, although she was frightened. She’d never seen him so angry before.

He let go of her and stared at her in disgust. “You know Laurie Rosomon’s been stealing money from the San for years! That’s the only reason I’ve had to come out here and now I’m going to lose my job in London! You owe me an explanation, Con and I want to hear it, right now!”

Con burst into tears, but Rix wasn’t having any of it.

“Is Rosomon stealing money from the San?” he demanded.

“You’re not going to fire him, Rix. I’ll write to Dad and to Uncle Jem and tell them what you’re doing.” Con sobbed, “How could you? Laurie hasn’t stolen anything. You’ve just come out here to ruin everything!”

“Fine. You do that.” Rix said, exasperated. “You sit there and cry – mope around a bit more. That seems to be the Maynard way. You can tell your friend Laurie that I’m calling in the police next week and then he won’t just lose his job, he’ll have a prison sentence to deal with!”

“How can you do this?” Con sobbed. Rix looked at her and regretted his outburst.

“Look, I’m sorry.” he said, “That was nasty of me. But Con… I need to know what’s going on. I won’t call the police in. You say it’s not Laurie, but who is it?” he put his arm around her and steered her to sit down on the sofa, once there he held her and let her cry against his shoulder. “Please tell me, I can help… I promise. Is it Reg?”

She shook her head, but then she looked up, “You promise you’ll help me?” she asked.

“Anything I can do, I will, OK?” he promised, although later he would regret it. “Now, what’s wrong?”

Con scrubbed at her eyes and seeing no escape, opened her mouth to speak.

“I-it was so easy to take the money. Dad used to leave the books lying around his office and nobody questioned me going into the San. I-I made up the name Meroxet – it was when Dad was giving orders for all kinds of new medicines so nobody noticed it. Then a few months later, I did it again. I typed fake invoices on my typewriter upstairs and took the cash from his bank account – I often used to deposit and withdraw money for him when I went to Interlaken and I just took a bit extra out. The books balanced and he didn’t notice – at first, anyway. It was easy.”

“I didn’t find the invoices.” Rix replied. “If I had, I probably wouldn’t have queried it. I would’ve thought it was a TB drug.”

“I took the invoices when I started working for you. I-I felt bad. Rix, I am sorry – I didn’t know that you hated it here so much.”

“It doesn’t matter – all I want to know is why you took the money. You said you haven’t spent it – you just hid it away. Why?”

“I wanted to move away. I was saving for if I had to go away. It was just for – in case he wanted me to go away with him and we needed the money. But then it all changed and I need the money for something else.” Con was evasive.

“Con, you’re not making sense. Who wanted you to go away with him and why?” Rix looked worried. Con desperately wanted to tell him the whole story, but she was afraid to.

What an intriguing set of three updates. I've been on here today but for some reason I managed to miss the cliffhangers.

Am I also allowed to gloat that I guessed the clue earlier was that Meroxet was a made up drug? Very Happy

I hope Con will be ok. It was definitely a twist to the story. I hope Rix will be able to help Con to sort everything out.

He reached out and took hold of her hand.

“Please tell me, Connie. I know I can help. Tell me who wants you to go away with him.” He asked, gently yet firmly.

“Laurie. He – he loved me, Rix. We – but you’ll be disgusted, I know he’s married… I’m ashamed of myself, but I love him. I still love him…” she wailed.

“Laurie? Con, have you been having an affair with Laurie Rosomon? But he’s – Daisy’s husband.”

“I know, I feel terrible… He says he wants to leave her and we’ll go to England… I-I want to go, Rix, but now – well…”

“You can’t do that, Con. Think about Daisy and the children.” Rix said sharply, but glancing again at her pale, tearstained face he felt nothing but pity for her. It was fairly obvious that it was Laurie’s fault.

“It’s not his fault.” Con guessed what he was thinking. “I-I made the first move. He was very reluctant.” She scrubbed her eyes with his handkerchief and bravely continued. “He’s worried sick that people will find out. That’s one of the reasons why he’s been so irritable lately – and why he didn’t want Daisy working at the San. We – we used to meet there.”

“It does explain some things,” Rix replied, “But ‘used to’? Are you still involved with him?”

“No.” Con said.

“Well, surely that’s for the best? You can give the money back and everything will be all right. I’ll even apologise to Laurie for suspecting him.”

“It wasn’t his idea to finish things, it was mine.” Con said.

“Well – good. You can move on with your life.”

“I can't! I still need the money.” Con started to cry again.

“What for? Look, I can give you money. Please don’t cry, there’s no need. I said I’ll sort everything out, didn’t I?”

“Yes… I know you will.” Con appeared slightly comforted. “I-I’m glad you’re not shocked, Rix.”

“No? I’m a bit surprised.” Rix admitted. “I’m not very happy about it – especially on Daisy’s behalf. But that’s for you to deal with. At least you had the sense to end things before they got too serious and Laurie Rosomon will just have to accept it.”

“I won’t tell him – you can’t tell him either.” Con said, unhappily.

“Tell him what?” Rix asked, although he had a horrible feeling about what she was going to reveal.

“That I’m not going to have his baby.” Con replied.

Rix got up from the sofa and paced around the Saal. A noise outside the door attracted his attention and he was moved to investigate, to find Geoff stood outside.

“I-I wasn’t listening – ” Geoff began, but Rix ordered him to go away in no uncertain manner, making a few pointed remarks about the dishonesty of eavesdropping.

Geoff fled, and Rix slammed the door shut.

He turned back to Con, frowning.

“I don’t understand. You say you’re not having his baby? Does this mean you aren’t pregnant or that you are and you don’t want to be?”

“I – I think I am pregnant.” Con replied, shakily. “And I can’t have it. You said you’d help me – I know you’d know what to do. Please, Rix! I can’t tell Laurie – he’d never do it, he’d want me to keep it.”

“Con… I can’t. You’re a Catholic.”

“You must have friends – people in London, who can do it.” Con replied, sounding desperate. “It doesn’t matter about my being Catholic.”

“How pregnant are you? You don’t show. Have you had symptoms?”

“I missed my curse – two months I think. And I get sick, like Mary-Lou.”

Rix sat back down on the sofa. “I can’t give you an abortion, Con. I’m sorry, but no.”

“I’ll go to London then and find someone who will.” Con replied, equally as determined as he. “David would know somebody.”

Too right he would, Rix thought, thinking of some of the contacts David had.

“You got Mary-Lou pregnant before you were married.” Con continued, beginning to get upset. “You can’t lecture me. And she had an affair with a married man!”

“She didn’t know he was married – and anyway, he wasn’t married to Daisy!” Rix retorted, but he couldn’t stay angry with her. It was a horrible mess for any young girl to find herself in. He dreaded to think what Jack and Joey would say – it could tear the whole family apart.

“I wrote about this in my novel.” Con continued, quietly. “I thought you’d pick up on it and I wouldn’t have to tell you like this.”

“I see.” Rix said, not seeing at all, but at least the reason for her unhappiness was out in the open and Con appeared to look better for it, now she had stopped crying.

“You will help me, won’t you? You did promise.” Con said.

“I’ll see what I can do. If it’s what you really want. But you know it is illegal and I bet it’s even more so in Switzerland. And I can’t begin to imagine what Jack’s reaction would be.”

“It’s a mortal sin.” Con said, slowly, biting her lip, “But I can’t have a baby, how can I? I’m not married!”

Rix sighed and returned to thinking about the problem of Laurie, who was really the one he blamed. Why hadn’t he taken precautions to avoid pregnancy if he had to seduce Con? Or be seduced by Con, he corrected himself.

“Did he – Laurie – say he would leave Daisy and the children for you?” he demanded, feeling like the worst kind of traitor. “Didn’t he say you could go to England? Wouldn’t you consider that, if you do love him?”

“If he left Daisy for me, you mean?” Con asked. “Of course. I told you I love him.”

“But he doesn’t know you’re pregnant? If you told him and he wanted to take you to England, would you go and keep your child?”

Con nodded, sudden hope in her eyes. “But what about Daisy?” she asked.

“I don’t know. You’ll have to talk about it with him.” Rix said, quietly, but he was determined to have a little talk with Laurie too.

It was half past two in the morning and Freudesheim was silent. Mary-Lou was asleep and snoring ever so quietly and Rix was lying next to her, fathoms deep also, his arm around her.

A knock on their door disturbed Rix, who always slept lightly and he got up quickly and opened the door.

Phil was stood there, also in her pyjamas, looking frightened.

“What’s wrong, Phil?” Rix asked gently.

“It’s Con. She’s hurt herself I think. Can you come?”

“Of course.” Rix pulled on his dressing-gown and followed his small cousin up one flight of stairs, still half-asleep. Halfway there he realised what might have happened.

Con was in the bathroom, with the door locked. Rix knocked on it, sharply.

“Con? Are you all right? Open the door.” He could hear her sobbing loudly. Realising without a doubt what it could mean, he sent Phil back to bed and when she had gone, put his shoulder to the door.

The lock gave and the next minute he was crouched next to Con, who was on the floor, covered in blood which she was trying to clean up and crying hysterically. He could tell just by looking that it was too late and there was nothing he could do for her.

“Connie, listen to me, I’m going to have to take you into the San, OK? Come on, darling. Leave that.”

“I-I don’t want to see him,” she sobbed in response.

“You won’t – I promise. I’ll be with you, I’ll help you. Put your arms around my neck and I’ll get you to the car.”

At the San he stayed with her as she lost the baby she hadn’t thought she had wanted. Only when the ordeal was over and she was sedated and sleeping, did he telephone Freudesheim and speak to his wife.

“Con had an accident. The bathroom –” he began, not really wanting to tell her what had happened over the telephone. All he could think about was her own pregnancy.

“I saw it – Phil told me. What happened, Rix?”

“I’ll tell you when I get home, but she’s fine – I mean, she’s – I’ve got to stay with her here.”

“I understand – of course I do. Shall I come down? I could sit with her.”

“No – Could you telephone Laurie Rosomon? I really need to speak to him here. Could you ask him to come in? Tell him – tell him I’m sorry it’s so early, but it’s urgent.”

“Will she need surgery?” Mary-Lou asked.

“I operated.” Rix said, briefly. “I must go, I’ll see you later.”

“I’ll telephone Laurie.” Mary-Lou replied, and rang off.

Rix continued sitting at Con’s side and waiting miserably for Laurie to arrive. Laurie needed to know, even if it meant Rix breaking his promise.

Laurie didn’t take long to get to the San, though it was clear he had no idea why he had been summoned so peremptorily. Rix met him in the corridor. After he had put Con in the car, he had been able to dress hastily, but he still had his pyjama jacket under his jumper and it had blood on it. Laurie noticed and his frown changed to a look of alarm.

"What’s wrong?" he demanded.

Rix shook his head, "It’s Con. Look, we can’t talk here." He winced as Laurie seized his arm.

"Tell me what’s wrong with her," he said, turning white with anxiety. "Is she hurt?"

"She’s had a miscarriage." Rix said, "I’m sorry, Laurie."

"What?" Laurie looked overwhelmed. "A miscarriage? But…”

“I know – Con told me a few days ago. It was your child. Laurie, I am sorry. Why don’t you sit down? We can go to my office…”

“I need to see her. Will she be all right?”

“Physically she’s fine… She’s sedated. It was early – ten weeks, I think. She didn’t want me to tell you, but I thought you should know.”

“I didn’t even know she was pregnant.” Laurie seemed in a daze. Rix managed to manoeuvre him into a nearby side room and get him to sit down. The next minute Laurie had burst into loud and violent sobs.

Poor Laurie. And poor everyone else, for that matter! I hope all this can be resolved somehow, but I can't quite see how everyone can get a happy ending in this sort of situation... Confused

Feeling sorry for laurie, something I'm rather surprised about in some ways. He obviously cares about Con a lot. But poor Daisy, what might this mean for her and her family. I hope that they can work it all out between them. Though someone is going to be hurt. Hmmmm, I suppose it could be remorse which is upsetting Laurie as much as anything else though, but it still doesnt make it any easier for those involved.

Laurie had been heartbroken and it had taken a long time to calm him down. His grief for Con was genuine, mixed with a bitter remorse for what he was doing. Rix had not needed to say much as Laurie had told him the whole story, which was a long one.

The relationship with Con had started not long after Len’s wedding. As Con had said herself, she had initiated things. Laurie had not resisted and was obviously wracked with guilt over the whole affair.

He had even apologised to Rix for his unpleasant and confrontational behaviour, explaining that he had been worried that Rix and Mary-Lou would find out about the affair.

“I thought she’d tell you about us. I don’t know. I haven’t behaved very well all round,” he said, quietly. “I was annoyed you’d given her and Daisy work here – I’ve been trying to keep them apart.”

“What are you going to do now?” Rix had asked.

“What can I do?” Laurie had said, “I can’t – I’ll have to tell Daisy. It’s the only thing I can do. If Con wants me, then how can I finish things now? She must be devastated.”

“She said she didn’t want to see you.” Rix replied, carefully. “Maybe if you left it a day or two. She’s sedated now, anyway. Look, Laurie, she told me she didn’t want the baby. She was frightened you’d make her keep it. I think it’s only now that she’s realised she did want it after all…”

Laurie wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. “I see. Did she ask you for an abortion?”

“I can’t tell you that, Laurie, you know I can’t. I’ve told you more than I should have already.”

“No, I understand. Thank you. And I am sorry.” Laurie didn’t need to spell out why he was grateful.

Rix got home at nine, exhausted and depressed. The bathroom had been cleaned and he was able to reassure an anxious Anna that Con would be fine. She didn’t ask what had happened and he didn’t offer an explanation.

Mary-Lou was not there, but Anna said that she had gone to the School to see Miss Annersley. Rix went upstairs to get some sleep.

He awoke, hours later, to find Mary-Lou looking down at him. “Anna told me you’ve been asleep since nine – it’s five now. I didn’t really want to wake you,” she said, gently.

Rix rubbed his eyes and sat up. “Did they phone for me? The San I mean?”

“Laurie phoned. He said Con’s going to be fine, she’s awake and talking. He also said - let me see - that she wanted to make a clean break. He said you'd know what he meant. What was it, Rix? Did she cut herself?”

He could tell by her expression she suspected something. She was holding her stomach protectively, the way she only did when she was upset and anxious.

“I can’t tell you.” He said, reaching out for her. “It’s Con’s - ” he stopped, not wanting to use the word ‘affair’. “…medical matter. She’s going to be just fine. Probably best not to talk about it with anyone and leave it for Con to tell Aunt Joey – if she wants to, of course.”

“Oh I wouldn’t talk!” Mary-Lou replied, shocked. He smiled back at her, feeling like he could finally relax.

“No, but you do stick your oar in sometimes – I know you do! What about the time you…”

“Stop!” Mary-Lou laughed, sitting down on the edge next to him. He put his arms around her and held her for a long time.
