Because so few girls are actually considered to be so terrible as to actually be expelled from the Chalet School, Thekla sticks out, especially as she is the first girl to be expelled. Yes her behaviour was bad, but she had been brought up that way, and Joyce Linton wasn’t exactly a perfect CS girl before the corridor incident. I think it was understandable that Thekla was hurt when Joyce suddenly dropped her friendship with her and took up with Joey, who was someone Thekla hated, probably because she couldn’t understand her at all. If Joyce had been less tactless, or more thoughtful and not just abandoned Thekla, then things might have turned out differently. I would imagine her upbringing (which had already been established as not including a huge emphasis on honesty) was a major factor in her lying about the corridor incident, and also not seeing she should feel sorry for it afterwards - a lot of pupils had allowances made for their upbringing umpteen times (e.g. Grizel, Mary-Lou, Joyce) She does show remorse when Mademoiselle in her final talk points out that she was potentially a muderess, but at that point they've already decided to expel her. I wonder if things would be different if they'd pointed that out first. We know that she wrote to Mademoiselle a few years later, a strange letter, half-ashamed, half-grateful and I like to think that she did become a better person because of the Chalet School (incidentally, looking forward to seeing some more of the drabble about her life). Thelka certainly stoopd out in the series because she was one fo only two girls to be expelled. I think her upbringing clearly accounted for a lot of her behaviour and in fact given the political climate of the time it is quite surprising that the CS did not have other girls like her.

I always think its a shame we never hear from her after the war, you know just finding out that she was alive and what had happened to her during the war. Isn't there a story out there about this? I also think that if the Powers-That-Be at the CS had been more patient then maybe she wouldn't have had to be expelled, yes she lied but still.
