*starts off discussion* Laughing

I liked Hilary, although to me, she was never really a main character. From what I can remember, she was one of the sensible, fun girls from St Scholastika's (I think). Was she one of the girls who went back into the Hall to save Jo's book in the fire?
By all accounts she was a good teacher, her main achievement being the 'Staff Room baby' Wink But I think she faded into the background a bit after she left and got married, although it was nice to find out she was living in the Oberland too and so merited odd mentions.
I don't really have any strong opinion of her, she was just another nice, fun girl who married a doctor Laughing

She's sort of the quintessential Chalet girl/teacher - is a good prefect, comes back to teach at the school, where she's a well liked teacher until she graduates, and is rewarded by marrying a doctor and getting to live near the school and have lots of babies.

I really like Hilary, I think she's sadly ignored in the later part of the series. I always saw her as a second Jo in the Tyrol; she was a young, energetic, charismatic leader - and she was right at the heart of the drama in Exile. I wish those characteristics had been more visible in the later books.

She's rather too sensible to be wholly appealing, though. Does she ever get anything wrong?

But isn't her daughter described as a "young demon"?

Although it's a nice naughtiness, I'm sure, and a few years at the Chalet School will transform her...

it is a pity EBD never made more of her, but I can see why. Joey was still very much to the fore when Hilary was at school - even though she'd left by then, and then Joey was always hanging around the school. So Hilary was simply in Joey's shadow.

Although we should really have seen a lot more of her as Miss Burn when she came back to teach. I think it's such a pity she never really developed as a character cos she might have been quite interesting.
