Poor Gillian - no one wanted to discuss her! Laughing OK I'll start. Gillian comes across as the more likeable, by far, of the Lintons, and she's hard working, sympathetic etc. I do feel she has been at least partly reponsible for how spolit Joyce becomes -basically by continually helping her such that Joyce relies on her. I feel very sorry for her re her mother - she's only 15 yet has to cope with the serious illness of her mother - and later her death. As a mistress - wish we could have seen more of her - she's actually a mistress for some seven years - but, in comparison to the Swiss years, there are far less books that cover the entire period. Nice that her husband is not a doctor!

I like Gillian and you can sympathise with her on her responsibilities at so young an age - coping with her mother's illness and her demon sister, Joyce!! I am not keen on Joyce - she makes Gillian's life a bit of a misery. I think she makes a good head girl and it is good seeing her come back as a mistress. And it is nice seeing her fall in love and get married.

Re how Gillian has contributed spoiling Joyce - I suspect that their mother started this and as she became ill and less able to look after them, Gillian naturally continued. Maybe if Mrs Linton hadn't been so ill, she would have realised that Joyce was growing up nad needed a firmer hand (or more probably - maybe not)I really like how Gillian settles down and gradually learns to look after herself and support Joyce without doing everything for her.

I always felt sorry for Gillian, she had so much to bear. She would have done better to give Joyce a good slap to bring her to her senses. Gillian grew into a sensible, caring person, which was good to see.
