Discuss Evvy here, please (btw - Corney is next week ...) (Anyone wanting to know the full story of what happened to her after leaving the school should check out Josie's excellent drabbles in C&D!)

Evvy is one of my favourite characters from the Tyrol era schoolgirls. I think it's the fact that she's a well rounded character. We also get to know more about her family than some of the other girls that we meet. She's a very strong character for some of the books, then, unfortunately she seems to disappear from the books at about Exile time. We never really see Evvy as a responsible prefect (from what I can remember). I tend to remember her more as a "mischevious middle" then in later books as "Lady Watson." I would have liked to have seen more of her as a senior pupil. Star Wars

I think that Evvy was a very strong character, who made the Tyrol books come to life. Of course, she was cursed with EBD's version of how americans spoke and used slang, but for all that she was a real leader in her group, with lots of animation. She was also genuinely kind-hearted as we see when she swept Rosalie Dene off to the South of France to recuperate after Scarlet Fever, and her attitude to Edgar's children was great, considering other stepmothers in the books. She was lively and outspoken, and I really enjoyed the tricks she played as a naughty middle. As the daughter of a rich man, she could have been a real spoiled brat, instead she had a good sense of humour.

Embarassed thanks for the flowers Rachael! Well, guess it doesn't take Einstein to work out that Evvy has always been my favourite character from the books! Laughing When I read the books as a kid, it was mainly because she was a very similar character to the people I was friends with in real life, and I still feel a strong empathy with her now. As Jennie said, she is a very strong character, and comes across as genuine, fun-loving, full of life, mischievous without being nasty and completely down-to-earth (especially considering her father's wealth and the fact she is an only child). And I found her genuine joy and happiness at finally getting married and becoming a stepmother and mother to be very heartwarming indeed. For me, I think she is one of the best drawn characters of the entire series, along with Corney, Frieda and Bride. Reading the books now, I always find the almost throw away comments about her fiance dying to be far sadder than some of the more in-your-face incidents in the books (feel the same about Ruth Herbert's death and Miss Durrant's family being killed) as the comments leave you to imagine for yourself how awful it must have been.

I loved Evvy, She always seemed like she would be a fun friendeven as a grown up.I hoped she would return for her family to attend the C.S. When did Miss Durrants family die?

EBD mention (in Gay)that her young daughter was killed in an air raid, andher husband is missing (but we can hope he turned up at a later date, since she disssapears again from the series). The details get filled in much more in Headmistress, but I don't want to give them away to people who might still be thinking of buying it. I don't seem to be saying anything about Evadne, so I'm gettting out of this discission right now.

I was always a great Evvy fan, too. Naughty but never nasty. She and Corney shaped my views of Americans - together with American Airmen who spoilt a little girl when she was taken to their airbase by her uncle! They had the same outgoing innocent sense of fun. Josie's drabbles have made me forget that we heard so little of her in later years and so I no longer criticise EBD for her neglect of a strong character - another instance of a 'fill in' becoming canon in my mind.

I liked Evvy. If I had gone to the CS, I would have definitely wanted to be friends with her and Corney. They seem like such fun people to hang around with. It does bug me though that I never have found out how you pronounce Evadne!

Chair - it's Eh-vad-knee.

At least, that's how most baby name books etc tell you it is phonetically pronounced, and it was definitely Dr. Eh-vad-knee Hinge in the TV show! Plus that's how EBD tells people it's pronounced in one of the newsletters.

Thanks, Josie. I have wondered how you pronounced it for years - now the mystery is finally cleared up! I have never read any of the newsletters.
