Please discuss Bride here...

I like Bride. I think she's fab.

In fact, of all the clan, I think she's my favourite, from her early school days to her headgirlship. I think she is one of the best-written charaters. Rounded, well-balanced, a hot temper but sense of fairness.

I'm not sure what else I can say about her, except that it was a shame that she just disappeared after her school years. I'd have like to have read...oh, now THAT's and idea for a drabble. *dons writing hat*

I also liked Bride as well. To me she seemed to be a real person, a very capable head girl in her own right. She's one of the few characters we got to see grow up in the books.
I thought she got married to a lawyer later on in the books...

Yes I like Bride too, it is nice to see her change from a little girl in the HT/Lavendar era to a prefect and finally Head Girl towards the end of the St Briavels books.

It is nice to see her at home at the beginning of Bride, and to see her being independant of Peggy though I think EBD would have liked her to cling to her sister.

Yes, she marries Simon Carrington:

Quote:
“P.S. I nearly forgot to tell you the latest and biggest piece of news. Who do you think is engaged now? Bride Bettany!!! He’s a young barrister whose sister is a pal of hers—name of Carrington—Simon Gregory Carrington. Imagine Bride Mrs. Simon Carrington! They won’t be married for a while yet as he’s not much more than at the beginning, but Daddy says he’ll do O.K. The next thing, I suppose, will be our own Sybs producing a young man. She’s eighteen and I heard Daddy tell Mummy she’d have to keep a look-out if she didn’t want to miss her eldest girl quickly, as Sybs was a regular honeypot! Isn’t it awful?’”
(Joey and Co in Tirol)

And also:

Quote:
Still, they all looked very well and the first wedding among the younger generation has been a howling success. I suppose yours will be the next, Bride?”
“Then you suppose wrong!” Bride retorted. “We aren’t going to get married for at least four or five years to come. How do you imagine we could live? We’re both at the beginning of things
(Ruey Richardson - Chaletian)

Bride is undoubtedly my favourite character in the whole series. As other people have said, she's well-rounded and unlike Joey, for example, she doesn't change a great deal as she gets older. Despite being a generally sensible and practical girl, she can't always control her temper and the scene in which she admits to Miss Annersley that she finds it hard forgive Diana Skelton is particularly revealing - her reaction is very realistic, but she is honest enough to admit her feelings to the Head, even though it must be obvious that Hilda won't condone them.

Another endearing quality, I think, is her choice of friends. Tom, Elfie, Nancy, Julie and Co. are all likeable characters and it never seems to be the case that Bride is the 'leader' of the group, even when she is Head Girl.

Thanks KB. Do you know any details about the wedding?

I know the following:

She marries in October of the term covered by Ruey, on a Saturday morning.

Peggy wears an ivory-white dress with a veil of point d’Alençon (the same Mollie wore for her wedding) and the other members of her wedding party wear gold ('autumn tints of flowers and dresses').

Peggy and Giles Winterton get large numbers of presents.

Jack and Jo give them a cheque. Those girls who remember Peggy also give money and ask the Head to make it into a cheque, as do the staff.

It's the first wedding of that generation.

All of the family - including the Richardsons - attend.

The honeymoon lasts four days and then Mr and Mrs Winteron go to Quebec.

The Maynard triplets and Ruey bring back the second tier of the wedding cake for the school.

Maeve stays behind for several days with Mollie Bettany, who is lonely without Peggy.

The photos are put on a pin-board at school and are the subject of much discussion.

Hope its not too late to add.

I really liked Bride - I felt that she was a little overshadowed as a youngster, particularly as she had grown up barely knowing her parents. I don't have my books with me, but I remember when her family returned from Ireland. She was written as a very plain young girl with the large glasses.

I liked how she was loyal to her friends, particularly with Elfie, after Elfie's Marmee died where she tried to support Elfie as much as possible with her regular letters.

Bride is one of my favorite characters in the series, and one of the ones I'd most like as a friend. She's friendly and good natured, but has normal human failing and faults. She's bookish, and not ravishingly pretty like most of her relatives. I also get the feeling she was overshadowed a bit as a kid, with two siblings only a year older than her, and Peggy being so sweet and gentle and pretty and ladylike Rolling Eyes, plus being raised by an aunt and uncle.

Bride also never comes across as condescending to her peers - many of the other 'family' types do, even if inadvertantly, to new girls, particularly the ones not raised in the approved Chalet style. I like her interaction with her friends, as someone said, she's not an in-charge sort of leader, like Joey or Mary-Lou, but they rather have a relaxed, non exclusive sort of group of friends, all of whom can carry their own.
