#1: The intrigues and infidelities of Jack Maynard Author: AnonybunnyLocation: Behind closed doors PostPosted: Sun May 08, 2005 10:04 pm

Gratuitous thanks to my beta-readers - blame them for convincing me to post this!

Jack Maynard pushed open the door to Plas Gwyn and entered the house. From the drawing room came the sound of a voice raised in song. Poking his head around the door, he found his wife singing, while Daisy Venables accompanied on the piano, and a nearly a dozen other schoolgirls listened raptly.

The song ended and Jo, with a shriek as she realised the time, hustled the girls into coats and hats, and down the drive, waving them goodbye from the gate. Then she returned to the house to greet her husband.

“Jack, my lamb, how was your day?” She chattered on, giving the news about his triplet daughters, Len, Connie and Margot, and baby son, Stephen.

Jack half-listened, knowing if she noticed he was not giving her his full attention, she would assume he was worrying over a case at the San. They had been married for 4 years now, and the initial thrill of getting her had long worn off. His thoughts wandered back, remembering…

He had just amicably ended what had been a mutually satisfying, but had turned boring, liaison with Bette di Bersetti, and having a couple of days off from the San had gone into Innsbruck, where he met up with some friends.

“Not consoling the pretty widow tonight then Jack?” asked Karl, placing a tankard in front of him.

“Time to move on,” said Jack, briefly, before taking a long swig. Then he slowly looked around the room, until his eyes came to rest on a young woman sitting with a friend near the bar. “And I’ve just found where my next stop will be.” A slight motion of his hand brought a barman to the table, shortly after the same man was serving two glasses of wine to the women and indicating Jack across the room. Jack raised his tankard slightly and gave a half-smile, knowing exactly how long to hold eye contact before turning to his friends.

“What do you bet he’ll spend tonight in her bed?” Karl said to Friedrich with a laugh.

“I’d never bet against that with Jack,” answered Friedrich, “There’s not a woman he can’t get if he sets his mind to it.”

“I bet you there is.” said Karl. “In fact, I could name one right now.”

Jack drained his tankard and put it down purposefully. “Who?”

“Jo Bettany.”

“Oh that’s not fair!” exclaimed Friedrich, “he lives in the same house as her; that would be so easy.”

“Not with her it isn’t.” answered Karl, “she swears she’s never going to get married. Don’t you remember that doctor who tried to change her mind a while ago?”

Jack thought for a moment. He had never seen Jo as anything other than his boss’s sister-in-law, scarcely out of school, somebody he was willing to be friendly with and pass time chatting to if there was nobody more interesting around, but he had certainly never considered her as anything else. But a challenge was a challenge.

“How much?” he asked.

“30 Schillings says you can’t get her to change her mind and marry you.”

Marriage. Jack’s eyes narrowed. He wasn’t planning on getting married just yet, but it had to be done sometime and if he had to do it now, at least marrying Jo Bettany would help secure his career.

“30 Schillings? Done.” he agreed.

“And another 30 says you can’t get her pregnant!” added Karl.

“And 50 more for a son,” supplemented Friedrich.

Jack smiled. He had no doubts of his ability to get a woman pregnant. The baker’s daughter in Spartz, among others, had helped prove that. “Done!” he waited while Friedrich bought a round of Schnapps to seal the bet. “To my marriage to Jo Bettany,” he said, raising his glass. “And now, in the meantime, if you gentlemen will excuse me?” He knocked back his drink and made his way across the bar to join the woman he had singled out earlier.

Well, he had been successful, thought Jack. Both in marrying Jo and with, what was her name? Gretchen? Gretel? He couldn’t remember now, but she had been willing to let him into her bed that night, and welcomed him whenever he visited Innsbruck over the next few months. That had been fairly frequently. Starting his campaign to win Jo round, he had been smart enough to realise that his usual seduction techniques would not work in her case. So he had worked on gradually consolidating his position as friend and confidante. He would offer to drive her to Innsbruck so she could visit Frieda or other friends, and had amused himself for a couple of hours with Greta? Gerda? (or if she wasn’t there her flatmate had proved to be happy to accommodate him) before escorting Jo back to the Sonnalpe.

Things had progressed slowly with Jo, but the Anschluss and following events had precipitated things for him, he had pushed his advantage at just the right time and Jo had agreed to marry him. He had been slightly disappointed, although not particularly surprised, that Jo did not want to anticipate her wedding vows, but a brief dalliance with Frau Meiders, who was just the right age to be grateful for his attentions, and realistic enough to accept that she was just a way for him to pass the time, had helped him to wait patiently for his wedding night.

Again he had been fortunate, the escape from Austria had brought his wedding forward by several months, and before long he and Jo were married. For a while, the thrill of achieving the challenge had been enough for him to be an attentive husband, but all too soon that began to pall. He wanted a willing partner, somebody who was as enthusiastic to be bedded as he was to bed them, not somebody who lay passively under him, thinking of England, or perhaps the Tyrol, or even more likely the next chapter of her latest book. He had hoped that after a while she would become more responsive, but before long she was pregnant and he was banned from her bed altogether. She hadn’t seemed to connect that with the fact that he started working longer hours at the San a few days later.

“Dr Maynard, Mrs Perinna has had her medicine, but she’s still complaining of pain. Could you come and have another look at her please?”

Jack would rather have looked at the nurse. She was new to the San, a Jersey girl, and he had spent some time over the last few weeks looking at her, noticing that her skirts were just slightly shorter than the other nurses’, and her apron fitted snugly across her bosom. He walked down the corridor behind her, watching the sway of her hips as she moved. Entering the patient’s room he checked Mrs Perinna’s pulse and temperature and prescribed another small dose. He waited while the nurse administered the drug and then held the door open for her, smiling into her eyes as she looked up and thanked him, reading the silent invitation in hers. A few minutes later they were in an empty room, the blinds closed, a chair jammed under the door handle.

“I’m supposed to be making the bed,” she murmured coyly, leaning her body towards him.

Jack smiled down at her, his lips a fraction of an inch away from hers. “Let’s make it in need of making then.”

She closed the gap and pressed her lips against his. She was as keen as he was and soon, there was a tangle of clothes on the floor as they tangled themselves on the bed. It was such a delight to be with an active participant again, Jack thought, before all other thoughts were driven from his mind. Afterwards they had dressed and he had left her to make the bed while he went back to check on Mrs Perinna.

Several more “bed-making” sessions had followed over the next couple of weeks. Neither of them had felt the need for conversation, or demanded anything of each other; both had been content with taking the opportunities to slake their lust in a dimly lit room. Jack found the uncomplicated situation quite satisfactory.

As they dressed after an interlude, where she had been even more enthusiastic than usual, she spoke. “This is good-bye Dr Maynard.”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m leaving tomorrow. Mrs Perinna is returning to Cheltenham, and her son has asked me to with her as a companion.”

“For him or for her?” asked Jack.

“Officially for her, or course, but unofficially I shall take care of him as well. Neither of us wanted this to be anything more than fun, which it has been, but this is a far better opportunity for me. Won’t you wish me the best.”

“Of course I will,” agreed Jack without rancour. He lifted her skirt and traced the top of her stocking with his finger. “I’ll give you my best something to remember me.” She giggled and didn’t resist as his hand wandered further up and he lowered her to the bed one last time.

Jack smiled as he remembered. Had he ever known her name? No, he thought, they had always been Dr Maynard and Nurse Carpenter. It was always good when a liaison ended like that, with no recriminations and no tears. There had been a few that hadn’t been so cordially terminated. Luigia had been devastated and had even gone so far as to enter a convent after he had ended his brief fling with her. After that he was careful to make sure the women he had associations with always knew the rules.

Jack’s rules were straightforward. He might use his powers of persuasion, but ultimately the woman had to be willing; he aimed to give as well as receive; schoolgirls and patients were out of bounds, although their friends and relatives (if of age) were fair game; and he neither promised nor demanded exclusivity.

After Nurse Carpenter, he brightened the life of a fishwife for a while. Guernsey didn’t have the opportunities that Innsbruck, or even Spärtz had held, and he had to be careful that no word of his activities reached Jo or Jem Russell. Then war had been declared and Jack had signed up. The uniform worked wonders. Every barmaid seemed to think it her duty to ensure that the handsome young doctor should have a good time before he went away to war. And, although Dr Chester was the Island’s doctor, Jack found he was asked to make nearly a dozen house calls before he left! Given the choice he preferred more than a one-off experience; he liked the chance to build some intrigue and guarantee regular encounters; but he wasn’t one to look a gift horse in the mouth.

While he was in France he had found the French girls just as willing to do their bit to help the soldiers. Based in a small town, he was soon able to establish gratifying arrangements with his host’s maid, and the grocer’s daughter. He smiled as he thought of his wife’s pride in her fluent French. He could probably teach her a few words she hadn’t come across. He had felt a slight disappointment when he had had to leave the town, as he had just begun a promising alliance with the mayor’s wife, a supple young woman called Claudette, but that was soon wiped out by the enterprising Nicole at his next billet.

Jack gave a reminiscent sigh, and Jo stopped her flow of speech. “You must be tired,” she said, “why don’t you go and soak in the bath while I go and help Anna get supper.”

“I’m not sure I can be bothered to move,” answered Jack.

“Well, you just wait there, my lamb, and I’ll go and run it for you.” She disappeared from the room and Jack idly wondered what she would have said if he’d suggested they share it – he had tried it once and decided it was worth giving another go sometime.

Jack went round the back of a house in Armiford and opened the back door with a key from his pocket. Finding nobody downstairs, he went up the stairs two at a time, and looked in the bedroom. Elizabeth was wearing a silk negligee that skimmed the curves of her body. She smiled as he entered.

“Jack, I was just about to take a bath.”

Jack was disappointed. “Can’t it wait, I’ve not got long, I’ve got an appointment at the San soon.”

“But by the time you go the children will be back and I won’t have time. Why don’t you join me.” invited Elizabeth, looking out from under her eyelashes.

Jack considered his options – a bath with Elizabeth or going back to the San early and seeing if Dr Thomas’s sister was around. It didn’t take him long to decide – Elizabeth was here, Alison might not be. He rapidly removed his clothes and swinging her into his arms walked into the bathroom and lowered her, still wearing her silk negligee, into the bath, then joined her there.

Jack was still feeling warm from the memory as he made his way upstairs, and he impetuously grabbed Jo from behind and nuzzled the nape of her neck. Jo stood still for a moment, and then pulled away. “I need to go and see to Stephen,” she said, walking towards the door, “then we’ll have supper, so take your time and have a nice long soak.”

Jack got into his bath and continued reminiscing. Elizabeth had entertained him for a few months, but her main priority was her children, and when the youngest had become ill she had not had time for Jack. He had said goodbye without regret, his mind already anticipating his next conquest. In the meantime, Alison Thomas was more than willing for him to spend more time in her bed. After a while, however, she started to get clingy and he was somewhat relieved when her visit came to an end.

Looking round at his options after that, Jack had decided his latest amours had been too easily instigated; there had been no challenge, no excitement of a chase; no carefully orchestrated seduction. He wasn’t about to complain, but he enjoyed the thrill of pursuit and persuasion, so he put more thought into his next target. His leave had come to an end before he made his decision.

The letter from Jo, telling him she was expecting another child, had also contained the news that Myfanwy Griffiths, married early that year, had recently given birth. There had been some concern that the child had arrived earlier than expected, but apparently he was a healthy baby, and Llewellyn Griffiths was delighted with his new son. Jack grinned at the news, knowing full well that baby Griffiths been the result of one of many pleasant afternoons in a hayloft, and had arrived bang on time.

When he was injured he had discovered that being an interesting patient had many advantages. Although when he was in a ward it was difficult to pursue these, as he recovered, the night sister found opportunities to take him off for regular private examination and treatment. In the past, he had never been such a passive participant, but his wound and energy levels limited him somewhat. It had been quite illuminating however, to discover that completely relinquishing control could be as enjoyable as keeping it.

When he returned home he had been limited in his extramarital activities for a while, although it was gratifying that Jo had been so pleased to see him home she had broken her pregnancy ban. He had found enjoyment in exploring her changed body, although he was still frustrated by her dutiful passivity.

After Christmas, when his recovery was progressing nicely, he had once more started to cast his eyes around for a candidate for his attentions.

Jack had a few more words with Matron, then leaving her with her patient, he wandered out of the school San. The girls were taking advantage of a frosty but bright January day and were out on a walk, so the building was quiet. Rounding a corner he bumped into Mary Burnett. Apologising profusely he bent down and picked up the pile of books he had caused her to drop, registering at the same time that she had surprisingly nice legs. He straightened up.

“Let me carry these for you, it’s the least I can do.”

“Thank you, Jack.” Mary smiled up at him. He looked into her eyes and smiled slowly, wondering if he had found the challenge he was looking for. He was gratified to see the colour come into Mary’s cheeks before he dropped his gaze to the pile of books. “Oh, I was just taking these along to the fourth form.”

“I’m not in a hurry,” Jack assured her and accompanied her along the corridor. They didn’t pass anybody as they made their way to the form room. Mary pushed the door open and held it as Jack followed her in. It seemed completely accidental that his body brushed against hers as he past her, and he appeared not to notice her resultant confusion. The door swung closed as he put the books on the desk and turned to face her.

“Anything else I can do for you while I’m here Mary?” he asked.

Mary shook her head, then found her voice. “No thank you, but would you like a cup of coffee before you go? The percolator is on in the staff room.”

“A cup of coffee would be wonderful, thank you.” He held the door open, careful not to touch her this time, and followed her along to the staff room.

Mary’s fingers met his as she handed him a cup of coffee, and once more, the colour rose in her cheeks. His eyes met hers briefly, and he exulted in the knowledge that she felt an attraction to him. He would have to take things slowly, but he was keen to see if he could win the chase.

He chatted casually until she seemed to be more relaxed and at ease. Then put down his cup and got to his feet. “I’d better be getting back now. Thanks for the coffee.” As Mary stood, he touched her shoulder in a friendly gesture, but let his fingers linger slightly longer than suitable for a friend and slid them down to her upper arm before breaking contact. Then he had turned and left the room, satisfied in the knowledge that the groundwork had been laid.

He drove out of the school gates, anticipating their next meeting. He knew he would have to be careful not to be caught. Coming and going unnoticed would be difficult, but not impossible, he had managed it at the Tiernsee. The risk of discovery had added a certain spice to his encounters with Matron Besley (on one occasion he had spent nearly an hour cramped in her wardrobe) but nobody had had any suspicions. Of course, being in a separate building to Matey had been a distinct advantage, but he was sure he would manage to avoid detection somehow.

Jack reached for a towel and climbed out of the bath. Mary had not been an easy conquest, and the challenge of gradually breaking down her defences had required great patience. Patience was not one of Jack’s virtues, but fortunately he had discovered the landlady at the Armiford Arms to be very hospitable. Eventually after just over 2 months, the longest he had ever pursued anybody other than Jo, Mary had succumbed.

Jack had once more been visiting the school San and in an echo of that previous visit, he had bumped into Mary as he rounded the corner. This time, however he had a strong suspicion that she had been there on purpose and there were no books to pick up. He put out his hands and steadied her.

“Are you alright?” his voice was full of concern. Mary didn’t answer, and he put his arm around her shoulders and lowered his face close to hers. “Here, let me help you.” He guided her up the staircase and to the wing that housed the staff bedrooms. The school was busy preparing for the Sale, and they met nobody on the way. Once there he had to wait until she indicated her room and he steered her into it and shut the door behind them. He let his arm drop, waiting to see if she would take the initiative.

She didn’t move away, but turned to face him. “You know, I had a crush on you when I was at school.”

He had known, he was practised at picking up the signals and always knew when a woman was attracted to him. A schoolgirl, however, was off limits.

“Did you?” he asked. “An innocent schoolgirl like you?” he smiled teasingly.

“I’m not an innocent schoolgirl now.”

Jack’s gaze dropped to her lips. “Aren’t you?” he asked, his voice husky.

She reached past him and turned the key in the lock. “No.” she replied. He raised one eyebrow and looked at her with a slight challenge. She reached for his hand and led him towards the bed. “Let me show you.”

He obligingly allowed her to do so.

Mary and Jack had managed several discreet encounters over the next few weeks. The Easter holidays had meant Mary had plenty of spare time, and didn’t have duties that kept her in the school grounds. They had made the most of the freedom this afforded; Jack had knew a nice little hotel near Great Malvern, which they visited most afternoons when Jack could leave the San for a few hours, where the staff were the epitome of discretion, and never allowed even a flicker to show that they had seen him before or that a variety of ‘Mrs Smith’s had passed through their doors on his arm. Neither did the chambermaid give any indication that she knew ‘Mr Smith’ in the Biblical sense.

Unfortunately for Jack, Mary started to feel guilty about what she was doing to Jo. Jack’s reassurance that she wasn’t do anything to Jo (she was doing it to him) did not soothe her conscience, and while she could be distracted into forgetfulness, once she was out of his arms it would start bothering her again. Eventually, they agreed that the beginning of the school term would mark the end of their liaison, and, it followed, argued Jack, that they should make the most of their time left. Mary managed to square this decision with her conscience, and the last few days of the holidays were very enjoyable, if exhausting, for both of them.

As it happened, it was good timing, as the beginning of term found the school turned upside down after Miss Annersley, Miss Wilson and other staff members were injured in an accident. The circumstances were not conducive to slinking in and out of the school at odd times, and Jack decided to wait until things were more settled before he availed himself of any other opportunities at Plas Howell.

Which brought him to the present. It was now several weeks into the term and Jack had resolutely ignored any temptations from that source. Instead, during that time, he had kindly relieved the loneliness of a couple of local young women whose husbands had been called up, and had an agreeable reunion with Myfanwy Griffiths. These occasional incidents were all very well, however, but ideally he would like to have a more regular arrangement. As he sat opposite Jo eating his supper, he mentally reviewed the nurses at the San, rejecting some, categorising some as potential and the others as familiar territory.

He had just finished this exercise when Anna brought in the coffee. As he had with the images of the nurses, he appraised her figure, and when she reached across the table to clear the dishes, he suddenly discovered she had a very enticing cleavage. She straightened up and caught his gaze. He felt she had read his thoughts as she gave an infinitesimal smile before picking up another plate and leaving the room. At this point he became aware that her hips had an inviting swing.

Jack couldn’t believe that the ideal situation could be right under his nose; a convenient, easily accessible woman, with the risk of discovery by Jo to add a little more zest. He spent the rest of the evening, ostensibly reading The Lancet while planning out his campaign. By the end of the evening he had decided on his initial moves and he went to sleep convinced that a few days, a fortnight at most, would see them come to fruition. For once, however, circumstances took him by surprise and laid all his careful plans to waste.

Sorry Sophoife! Prepare to be freaked out even further Twisted Evil

Jack woke from a dream about Anna. For a few minutes he lay listening to Jo’s quiet breathing, then as he was wide awake he slipped out of bed and made his way to the kitchen for a glass of cold water. He was gulping it down, thirstily, when he heard a sound behind him. Putting down the glass, he spun round to see Anna standing there, wearing a long, thick robe.

“Did you want something Dr Maynard?” she asked, moving across the room. The moonlight streamed through the window and glinted off her flaxen hair. “I want something,” she continued without giving him time to reply. “and I can give you something if you want it.” Her meaning was unmistakeable and Jack wondered if he was still dreaming. She was close enough to touch now, he could see the excitement glinting in her eyes and he wondered briefly if the assured, provocative young woman in front of him was really the unassuming maid he had seen every day for years.

She released the edges of her robe, allowing it to fall open and reveal the lack of nightgown underneath. Jack knew when to recognise defeat, and rapidly abandoned his meticulously thought out plans as she pressed her full curves against him.

The moon slid behind a cloud, but they were too busy creating their own moonlight on the well-scrubbed table, to notice.

Jack returned to bed and slept soundly for the rest of the night. He woke in the morning with a sense of anticipation, wondering when the chance would arise to repeat the night’s experience. Several days passed with no opportunities. Although Jo was teaching at the school, the triplets required Anna’s attention for the majority of the time, and although she gave Jack plenty of glances full of promise, their contact was restricted to her leg brushing his when she brought him a cup of coffee in the study. To help contain his impatience, Jack added another nurse to the numbers of those who had yielded to him.

The chance came one afternoon when Jo took the triplets and Stephen up to the school with her and Jack returned from the San to find nobody but Anna at home.

Jack hurriedly read the note from Jo saying where she and the children were, and strode into the study to put down his bag before he looked for Anna. He didn’t need to look. She had heard the car and was already in the study waiting for him. With an eager smile, she wrapped her arms around his neck and drew his lips down to hers.

It took three-quarters of an hour to get everything back in its place on his desk, and the ink stain would never completely come out of the carpet, but it was more than worth it.

A week later; a week in which they had discovered that the nursery table creaked ominously and the dining table had a tendency to wobble; they were once more tidying the desk, although this time the ink stand had been moved to a place of safety in advance.

“Are you pleased with me?” asked Anna, as she put a paperweight in its place. “Am I giving you what you want?”

Jack stood up. “Yes, Anna, you are. And are you getting what you want?”

“Not right now, but I am about to,” she answered, propelling him back towards the desk, and the papers went flying again. “Although,” she added some time later, “it would be good to use a bed for a change.”

“I’ll see what I can arrange,” promised Jack, as he buttoned up his shirt.

Is this the reason that they went to Switzerland? Jack had run out of willing conquests at the Welsh San.

Jack was better than his word. Late July saw Jo and the children head off for a holiday in Yorkshire with Jo’s old school friends. Jack, naturally, had to stay behind to work at the San. The moment the house was empty, Anna had led him up to her room. The bed was certainly softer than a table, but was very narrow, and afterwards, Jack suggested that Anna make up a bed in one of the spare rooms.

Plas Gwyn was a large house, with several spare rooms and over the next month they made use of all of them, taking advantage of the opportunity to spend leisurely hours exploring each others bodies, discovering new delights. Anna told Jack how a waiter at the Kron Prinz Karl had initiated her into the pleasures of the flesh; he related to her how he was first seduced when he was 17.

The head gardener’s daughter, Millie, was as inexperienced as he was, and their hands moved awkwardly over each other’s clothed bodies, touching, exciting, wanting more but neither sure exactly what to do next. Eventually they pulled apart, their breathing ragged. They had spent many afternoons of the school holidays in this way, and at first it had been enough, but now they were both feeling the need to complete what they had started, but neither was confident enough to lead the way.

Jack lay restlessly in bed that night, unable to sleep, remembering the whispered conversations among the boys in his form and wondering if it was as easy as Peterson claimed. As he wriggled uncomfortably for the umpteenth time the bedroom door opened slowly. At first, all he could see was a figure holding a candle. Then as his eyes adjusted he recognised Lydia’s friend, Charlotte, who was visiting at that time. He sat up and opened his mouth to speak, but she put her finger against his lips to shush him. Putting the candlestick down on the bedside cabinet, she whispered “move over” and slipped between the sheets.

“You’ve grown up, Jack,” she murmured, running a hand down the length of his body. “You’re not a boy any more.” Jack swallowed, unable to speak as she continued, “you’ll be going back to school in a few days, but in the meantime, I thought I’d do my bit to help with your education.” She took his hand and placed it on her décolletage. “If, that is, you would like to learn?”

Jack was an eager pupil.

The following day, he had shared his new-found knowledge with Millie and, each night for the rest of the week, Charlotte returned to further his education. It was with a sense of disappointment that he had returned to school. By the second week of term he was longing for the Christmas holidays and the chance to see Millie again. He hadn’t been slow on the uptake, therefore, when Peterson recommended one of the laundry maids to him.

Over those summer days and nights with Anna, Jack realised he had finally met a woman was as insatiable as he was. For the first time in his life he didn’t feel the need to look elsewhere to supplement what she could provide; he was too much of a gentleman to completely abandon his other connections, but his visits to them were less frequent although as intense as ever and he made no moves to establish any new connections. Jack spent as little time as possible at the San, bringing paperwork home to work on and content to let Anna take the lead in prompting interludes throughout the day. It was a novel experience not to be the one planning where and when they would next be together and it added excitement to his day, not knowing when he would walk into a room and find her waiting for him, or when she would come and remove the paperwork from his hands and push him back in his chair.

“What are we going to do when Jo and the children come home?” Jack asked her as he fed her strawberries one evening towards the end of August.

She gently nipped at his fingers with her teeth. “We will make what opportunities we can,” she answered.

“You want to continue then.” Jack knew this was one association he would regret ending, and was relieved that she seemed willing to carry on, even though it would be more difficult.

“Yes,” said Anna, and proceeded to substantiate her words.

Not at all Kitty! I admitted it to prove that it is possible to both know Anonybunny's identity and tell other people that I know that fact without having to resort to blatant gloating in a shameless attempt to let Jack Maynard have his wicked way with me!

Besides which, I don't do gloating!!

If I might just interrupt you ladies...

The return of Jo and the rest of the family did cause difficulties, although neither was bothered about the added risk factor to their engagements. It also forced an increased variety of location. While the weather was warm they took advantage of the extensive grounds at Plas Gwyn, but as the days grew cooler and damper that became less appealing. Jack tried to time his arrival home from the San so that Anna would not be busy in the kitchen or with the children, in which case she would slip out to the garage as he put the car away, and they would mist the windows as they made use of the wide, leather backseat. Even that became impossible as winter approached, and as their opportunities became even less frequent, Jack started to look for them elsewhere.

Having just finished his round of the wards, Jack returned to his office to write up his notes. A knock on the door caused him to lift his head and a young, smartly dressed woman entered. He had noticed her when he was doing his rounds and, although he had not spoken to her, she had obviously read his interest. He rose to his feet and politely held out his hand.

“Dr Maynard? I’m Evaline Devereux. I understand you’re treating my nephew, Alfred.” she took his hand and shook it.

“Oh yes, is there something I can help you with?” Jack smiled as she took a step closer, still holding his hand.

“I just wanted to say thank you for all you’ve done for him.” Her spare hand rested against his chest. “There must be some way I can express my gratitude.”

Once again, Jack smiled. “I’m sure you can find a way.”

She managed to convey it very eloquently.

He missed Anna’s voracious demands and knew she wasn’t content with the heated looks, occasional touches, rubbing her body against him as they passed in the hallway, or hurried, hungry kisses in the pantry, any more than he was. He made every effort to erase his frustration, in which he was willingly assisted by Evaline and by the stationmaster’s wife, but found that, although he enjoyed their charms as much as ever, they did not assuage his longing for Anna.

It seemed impossible to find time when nobody was around. Jo was pregnant again, and was spending a lot of time resting at home, but he decided it was worth taking greater risks and, once again, Anna’s thoughts were in tune with his.

2 updates in one evening - don't say I'm not good to you Twisted Evil

After playing a riotous game in the nursery with his children, Jack left Jo with them, telling them a story and made his way downstairs. As he passed the open door of the linen cupboard a slight push from behind diverted him into it, and Anna followed, pulling the door closed behind her. They reached for each other in the darkness, too urgent for speech, not bothering to remove clothing; Anna’s skirts bunched up round her waist, as the desperate yearning of the last few weeks was finally fulfilled.

“It’s been too long” murmured Anna, as they straightened dishevelled clothing.

“Much too long,” agreed Jack, running his hand down to the curve of her hip.

“Next time must be sooner.”

“It will be,” he promised.

Jack was a man of his word. Two days later, he persuaded Jo to go with the children to the Round House to spend a day with Madge. Once he had driven her there in the morning, he returned to Plas Gwyn and found Anna on the landing, wiping condensation from the windows. Before she could turn round, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her into the nearest room, where he tumbled her onto the bed. At the last moment, she grabbed onto him and laughingly brought him down to join her, and soon her giggles were silenced.

Dusk had fallen by the time they left the room and made their way downstairs.

“I had better go and pick up Jo and the children,” said Jack, reluctantly as they walked into the sitting room. He turned to press a kiss on Anna’s lips and she slid her arms around his waist.

“I ought to prepare supper, but I wish we could have more time like this,” she said, echoing his own thoughts.

“Well, I’m sure Jo will be in no hurry to leave Madge,” Jack said, “I could wait a little longer before I fetch her, and supper can wait if you’d like to help me pass the time.”

She acquiesced, and they passed the time pleasantly on the sofa, before returning to their respective duties.

A few days later, Anna accosted Jack in his study, telling him the children were having an after lunch nap and Jo had also gone to lie down. She was unbuttoning his shirt, when they became aware of footsteps in the hallway and Jo’s voice calling. Jack cursed and hastily straightened his rumpled clothing, while Anna darted behind the long curtain at the window. As the door handle turned, Jack grabbed her apron off the floor, stuffed it into a drawer and rammed it shut just as Jo came in.

She could be training an army of ants to pursue Joey around the hosue.

She could be planning a terrorist attack on the residents of the village.

She could be admiring her reflection in the glass.

She could be flashing at passers-by.

She could be practicing her entrances for the local am-dram group.

“Jack, have you seen Anna? I wanted to ask her if we had enough dried fruit to make a cake for when the girls are over at half-term.”

“Is she not in the kitchen?” asked Jack, without looking up.

“No, maybe she went into the village.” answered Jo. “Oh well, I’ll ask her later. Your hair’s all sticking up on end.” She came over and smoothed her hand over his head. “I’m going to go and rest for a while now.”

“Okay,” Jack smiled up at her, and then as soon as she had left the room and gone upstairs he crossed the room and softly turned the key in the lock.

Anna emerged from behind the curtain. “Your hair is all lying flat.” She commented and proceeded to cause it to be more rumpled than before.

Jack was feeling very satisfied with his life, when he received a sudden shock.

“Tom Evans wants to marry Anna,” Jo said one evening as they sat by the fireplace after the children had been put to bed. “I’m glad for her, but don’t know what we’ll do without her.”

“Is she definitely going to marry him?” asked Jack from behind his newspaper, hoping he sounded casual. He had known Anna was amusing herself with Tom, he had almost tripped over the pair of them in the shrubbery the previous summer. He had not objected – how could he when he had just returned from similar activities with Tom’s cousin Olwen.

“I don’t know,” answered Jo, “she says she is thinking about it. It would be lovely for her of course, but we shall miss her dreadfully.”

“We can get another maid.”

“But not like Anna.”

“No, not like Anna.” echoed Jack.

When had it happened? When had Anna suddenly become the one woman he couldn’t bear to see go. Until now, all women had been replaceable, not forgettable, not all the same, but never had he parted from a woman without knowing he could easily find another, or two or three more who could fill the gap. If Anna went from his life she would leave a void that could not be filled.

Muttering something incoherent, Jack put down the paper and left the room. He found Anna in the scullery, scrubbing at the pans.

“I hear you’re thinking of marrying Tom Evans.” he said conversationally from the doorway. Anna jumped, she had not heard him coming, and turned round as he moved in to the room and pushed the door shut with his foot.

“He has asked me, yes.”

“And are you going to marry him?” he stood very close to her. “Do you want to marry him?” his breath tickled her ear as he asked the question.

Anna took a step back. “It would give me security.”

“But you have security here, with us.”

“For now, yes.”

“For always, We couldn’t do without you Anna.” It was the closest he could get to saying he couldn’t do without her.

“It would mean I have a man to warm my bed.”

“You have that here too,” he reached out ran his hands over her curves, lingering where he knew her to be most sensitive.

“Not at night,” she countered, her breathing quickening.

Jack took a small step closer. “Does it have to be at night? Can’t I persuade you to stay?” Anna swayed forwards into his arms and kissed him, unheeding of the soapy water dampening their clothes they locked together in an embrace that left them both tousled and breathless.

“Tonight.” Anna whispered when her breathing had slowed down. “Come to me tonight and persuade me.”

Jack would have argued the impossibility of it, but she silenced him effectively before straightening her clothes and returning to the kitchen, leaving him yearning to complete the discussion. He had to acknowledge she had got what she wanted. He would go to her tonight, he would manage it somehow, come hell or high water. He splashed cold water on his face and tucked in his shirt. In the kitchen he found Anna pouring coffee into two cups for supper.

“I’ll take the tray Anna” he said, very properly, “you get off to bed,” he gave her a very improper look and she nodded comprehension.

Jack carried the tray into the hallway and put it down for a moment while he went into his study. He returned with a small sachet of powder, which he emptied into Jo’s coffee and stirred well before picking up the tray again and going to join her. Later, once the dose had taken effect and Jo was sleeping sweetly he made his way up to Anna’s room.

“Have I convinced you not to marry Tom and to stay here?” he asked in due course, as daylight started to filter through the curtains.

“I’m considering it.” she told him, “but I think it might take a while to make up my mind.”

“Let me help you.” offered Jack, covering her mouth with his own.

Don't worry Catherine - Jack has many ...er... virtues, but monogomy is not among them

Over the next two weeks, Jack dedicated as much time as he could to helping Anna make her decision. Finally, after he waylaid her in the barn one afternoon and pleaded his case to the best of his abilities, she told him she would stay with the Maynards at Plas Gwyn and not marry Tom.

A decision they then celebrated with great enthusiasm.

With the matter of Anna’s future satisfactorily resolved, Jack was able to turn his attention to other issues. He had neglected his other companions shamefully in recent weeks, he realised, and decided he should make up for lost time. Myfanwy welcomed him back vociferously, and Olwen was quieter, but just as pleased to see him again. Evaline was aloof with him at first, showing her displeasure at his lack of attention over the previous week, but she couldn’t resist his charm for long and was soon munificently forgiving him.

It was after he had spent a morning in Evaline’s hotel room where she reiterated his pardon that Jack returned to the San to discover he had a visitor waiting for him. She looked vaguely familiar, although he couldn’t place her for a moment. He ushered her into his office and offered her a seat on the settee in the informal area away from his desk, seating himself at the opposite end.

“Your receptionist was quite concerned about letting me in without an appointment.” she began, and he recognised her voice, although he was still trying to work out where he knew her from.

“Oh she likes to do everything by appointment.” answered Jack, who knew that to be true for all the receptionist’s activities. “What did you want to see me about?”

“Oh, I was just in the area, and I heard you had moved here, so thought I’d pay a visit, for old time’s sake.” She smiled at him and suddenly Jack was transported to a hospital room in Guernsey. She wasn’t wearing a nurse’s uniform and was smartly dressed, with her hair ‘done’ but the smile and the look in her eyes were all very familiar.

“Nurse Carpenter!” he exclaimed.

“Actually, I’m Mrs Perrina now,” she corrected him, leaning towards him.

“You’re married?” He noted the ring on her finger, as she placed her hand on his thigh.

“Yes, I’m in the Golden Valley on my honeymoon, but my husband has been called away for the day on business.” the hand drifted upwards.

“Well, allow me to offer you my best wishes,” said Jack.

“Thank you,” she murmured against his lips, and Jack gave her his wholehearted congratulations.

Jack was delighted when Jo gave birth to another son. She chose the name Charles saying it was her favourite boy's name, and Jack agreed, not mentioning that his firstborn son bore the same name. Charlie was in his teens now, the result of a memorable New Year’s Eve with a nightclub singer when he had been a student. Charlie’s mother, whom Jack still only knew under her stage name of Bessie Belle, sent regular updates on his progress at a respectable school (fees willingly paid by Jack). The new baby in the house meant that Anna had less time for him, and Evalina had returned to her home, however, fate kindly took a hand.

So that's why he dosed her. Presumably that is also why he had a dressing room later as well! It could well be why he was happy for her to be pregnant all the time as well - if she had a 'pregnancy ban' as you said earlier it left him free!

He's obviously got something going for him if women come to see him while on their honeymoon!

I'm loving it, Anonybunny! It all hangs together with the books as well.

Jack kicked at the car in frustration. Here he was, in the middle of nowhere with a broken-down car, when he should be back at Plas Howells, taking advantage of Jo visiting the school to show off Charles. Anna would be waiting for him. He swore and stuck his head back under the bonnet, hoping it was easily fixable.

“Having trouble?” came a voice. Jack hit his head on the bonnet as he straightened up. Two young women in overalls had stopped their bicycles and were standing in the road watching him with admiring eyes.

“I’m not quite sure what’s wrong,” admitted Jack, “I don’t suppose any of you know anything about car engines?”

“Let me have a look,” offered one of the girls, wheeling her bicycle to the side and leaning it against the hedge. “I’m Mary-Beth.”

“Jack Maynard,” answered Jack, moving away from the car to allow her to have a look.

The second girl leant her bicycle against the first. “Nice to meet you Jack. I’m Vera and I know nothing about engines.” She offered him her hand. “Is your head ok?”

“It’s fine thank you.” Jack answered, “just a little bump.” He shook her hand and smiled at her.

Mary-Beth emerged from under the bonnet. “I can see the problem, but it’ll take me a little while to fix it.” She looked at Jack and Vera. “Why don’t you two leave me to it and go for a wander.” She looked meaningfully at her friend. “I’ll be fine here on my own and I’m sure you can find some way to occupy yourselves.”

Jack and Vera did not argue with her and soon found a comfortable spot in a copse where they occupied themselves agreeably. As they returned to the car Vera told Jack about their work as land girls. “I enjoy the work,” she told him, “it’s just a shame there’s such a shortage of men around. But the war should be over soon now.” They arrived at the car, just as Mary-Beth was closing the bonnet.

“All done.” Jack wasn’t sure if she was referring to the car or asking Vera a question.

“Thank you very much.” he said. “I don’t know what I would have done if you two hadn’t come along. Can I give you a lift anywhere – the bicycles will strap to the back.”

“That’s very kind of you, but we’re going to cut across the fields – it’ll be far quicker.” Mary-Beth replied.

“Well, if there’s any way I can repay you for your help?”

Mary-Beth’s eyes went to Vera, who gave a slight nod. “Well maybe if you’d like to drop by the cottage at Stafford Farm, sometime we could think of something.”

“I’ll do that.” promised Jack.

Jack redeemed his promise and visited the cottage. Mary-Beth was soon well repaid for her work on the car, but Jack continued to visit and express his indebtedness to her. He was also introduced to Vera and Mary-Beth’s friends at the cottage; Diana, Wilhelmina and Pattie were also land girls. Whenever he visited throughout the summer there was always somebody home to welcome him. “We’re all good friends here, and it’s share and share alike.” Vera told him, and he discovered that this was true. And if the girls were happy with the arrangement he wasn’t going to quibble about it.

Once the harvesting was over, the girls moved on to work elsewhere, so Jack once more appraised his situation. He decided the school offered good prospects, especially with the autumn approaching, an indoor venue was definitely preferable. The San also offered furnished protection from the elements, which Sister Foley was keen to benefit from.

They do, don't they. I'm still wondering where he gets all the energy from. he probably had to start taking Phyllosan very early.

Jack was called to the school one afternoon to check over some girls who had got caught in a shower and had developed a crop of colds. Having made up a dose to be administered each evening and left it with Matron, Jack went to find Miss Annersley in her study to give her a report.

“Oh, sorry Jack, Hilda’s not here at the moment. She said if you wouldn’t mind waiting she’ll be back in about half an hour.” Rosalie Dene greeted him as he entered her office.

“I’ll wait,” agreed Jack. “Will it bother you if I sit in here?”

“Not at all,” answered Rosalie returning to her desk, her fingers moving rapidly over the typewriter keys. “Sit down and make yourself comfortable.”

Jack sat down in a comfortable chair and looked at her as she bent her head over her work. He wondered again if the rumours concerning Rosalie and Jem Russell had been true. It was certainly strange the way she had suddenly gone from being Jem’s secretary to Hilda’s. If it had been true, well he certainly couldn’t fault Jem’s taste in women. His eyes dwelt consideringly on her trim figure. Rosalie looked up and smiled at him. “Would you like a cup of tea Jack?”

“Only if you’re getting one for yourself, don’t bother just on my account”

“Oh, it’s no problem,” answered Rosalie. “I’m feeling quite thirsty myself.” She got up and crossed the room where she bent over to plug in a small electric kettle giving Jack the opportunity to admire the rear view. She then opened a cupboard and produced a tray, cups and saucers. Before long the tea was brewing and she put the tray on a small table near Jack’s chair, sitting down nearby and chatting easily about the middles’ latest exploits. Jack listened intently, his eyes drawn to the curve of her lips, the wisps of hair curling on the nape of her neck, the length of her eyelashes. He laughed as she finished her tale and as their eyes met he felt a flicker of optimism.

His hopes were not unfounded. Jack started to drop into Rosalie’s office nonchalantly over the next few days, especially if he knew Miss Annersley was not in her study, and she was always willing to put her work aside for a brief chat. A brief chat soon developed into a leisurely cup of coffee, each time he visited the chairs were slightly closer together until the day when the slightest movement caused their knees to brush together. Jack knew that his next visit would fulfil his expectations and he was not disappointed.

Rosalie casually fastened the lock as she closed the door behind Jack and offered him a drink. As he settled into his usual chair, she stood by the fireplace and slowly unbuttoned and removed the top layer of her twin set, Jack’s gaze took in every movement, then he stood and mirroring her movements removed his jacket. “It’s hot in here today,” he remarked huskily.

“It is quite warm.” She slipped off her shoes, then unhurriedly pulled the her sweater over her head and stepped out of her skirt, waiting between each item as Jack removed his shirt then his trousers. Still standing the other side of the room from him she removed a stocking, inch by inch until he uttered a groan and, knocking a chair out of the way, crossed the room and pulled the second stocking off himself then lowered her to the soft rug in front of the fireplace.

Throughout the winter Jack and Rosalie spent several more pleasant hours on the hearth rug, kindling a fire to match the one in the grate. They were nearly caught on one occasion when Miss Annersley returned from a literature lesson to pick up a book she had forgotten, but finding the office door locked she assumed Rosalie was elsewhere and returned to her class, little dreaming that her secretary was stretched languorously on the floor while Jack removed her stockings with his teeth.

I will never again look upon Rosalie in the same way!!!! Shocked Laughing

Wonderful - can so see Rosalie's smile when, in Reunion, Joey asks her why she never married! Laughing

There seem to be an awful lot of wanton women around!

I love this line:

Good for Rosalie! I always felt EBD didn't give her a fair deal. I agree that bit in Reunion always made me a bit cross with Jo for being tactless - now I shall laugh along with Rosalie Wink

The answer to all your questions is:

wait and see...
Twisted Evil

The location of the office next to the headmistresses’ study meant that Jack and Rosalie had to confine themselves to times when Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson were both teaching, and the timetable for the spring term was drawn up to ensure that their lessons coincided as much as possible. In the meantime, as Charles grew a little older, Anna became less absorbed in caring for him and able to dedicate more of her time to Jack. After several months where they had been restricted to clandestine caresses in the pantry or torturing each other with teasing touches as they passed on the staircase, they had a rapturous reunion one afternoon when Jo had gone up to the school, taking all the children with her.

The moment he heard the car pull away, Jack shot out of the study, before it reached the end of the driveway, Anna was in his arms. “It’s been so long,” she groaned as she sent his shirt buttons flying. Jack’s fingers were just as busy with her clothes.

“I’ve missed you so much.” He admitted, and showed her how much, before sweeping her up into his arms, carrying her upstairs to reiterate the fact. “There’s nobody else like you, Anna.” He told her as they collected the scattered clothes from the hallway much later.

She gave him a lingering kiss. “Gut! I don’t care how many other women as long as I am the special one!” He kissed her back.

“Oh you are.” The pile of clothes landed by their feet as one kiss led to another …

“We saw Mrs Griffiths with her baby today Papa.” Con told Jack as he came to tuck the triplets into bed a few days later.

“She’s very tiny,” said Len, “her name’s Sioned and her hair’s ‘zackly the same colour as mine.”

“She’s got blue eyes like me,” added Margot, importantly. “Have you seen her Papa?”

“Yes, I’ve seen her, she’s a very pretty baby. Now you three go to sleep with no whispering. Good night and God bless.”

As she followed him out of the room, Anna’s eyebrows rose in question and Jack grinned complacently in reply. As their gazes locked her question changed, the smile became more intimate and the air between them began to sizzle. Anna pulled him aside into the nearest empty room, where he wordlessly assured her that no amount of children by other women would affect his craving for her touch.

As spring turned into summer the hearthrug in Rosalie’s office office was less-frequently occupied. Eventually they both agreed that there was no use trying to rekindle a flame burnt brightly but had now died out. After they had bidden each other a final farewell, Jack left her office with a sense of anticipation already building. Time to find some pastures new, and it literally was in a pasture that he found himself late one night.

“Rufus, come on boy,” the St Bernard left the interesting smell he had been investigating and followed Jack through a gap in the hedge into the field. Jack wandered along looking up at the starlit sky, wondering if Jo would be fast asleep by the time he returned. His ears registered Rufus greeting another dog and he looked around for the owner. Jo would never let him hear the end of it if Rufus got into a fight with a stray. In the darkness he could just make out a figure coming towards him. A soft voice called the other dog to heel. “It’s ok, Rufus is big, but he won’t hurt him,” he said reassuringly, “he’s very gentle. I’m Jack Maynard.”

“I’m Sally Ashton. Benji’s a friendly dog” came the reply, and she came slightly nearer, then stumbled over a dead branch, Jack caught her but overbalanced and, clasping her in his arms fell to the ground. “I’m so sorry, are you alright?” Sally asked seeming in no hurry to get up from on top of him. Jack felt more than alright as she looked down into his eyes; despite the darkness she could read her offer mirrored there. It was some time before she allowed him to stand up.

Over the next few weeks, while Sally was visiting her uncle, Jack walked Rufus regularly in the evenings. Jo was usually fast asleep when he returned, but some nights he would find Anna waiting up for him, and duly rewarded her for her patience.

Over the summer months, Jo and the children went away to the Yorkshire moors for another holiday, this year with Madge and Mollie Bettany and their families. Anna stayed at Plas Gwyn to give the house a good clean and turn out and Jack helped her check out the condition of each and every room in turn. By the end of the summer, both felt they had compensated a little for the infrequency of their opportunities over the last few months, and as Jo’s return loomed, they made as many memories as they could to keep them going until the next time.

Jack must be uncommonly adept at reading the glances of all his conquests, because half the time he doesn't actually need to say anything so crude as, "fancy a shag?" or words to that effect. They just seem to fling themselves at him! How long can Joey remain oblivious before some busy-body blurts out the secret?

All the same, thanks, Anonybunny - this makes me giggle like a loon!

I'm beginning to imagine all the childen therabouts with very similar looks!
